HOD's Desk
Dr. Thippeswamy G
HoD, Department of CSE
It’s my pleasure to write about the Department of Computer Science & Engineering for
the year 2016-17 even semester as the year was fruitful with many laurels including
University rank and accreditation. The Department was established in the year 2002 – 2003
with an initial intake of 60 and enhanced its intake to 90. The department started its Post
Graduate programme M Tech in Computer Science & Engineering with an intake of 18 in
2014. The department has Research Centre which is recognized by VTU and 10 scholars are
registered for PhD.
The department is supported by 24 qualified and experienced faculty members with FIVE
Doctoral degree holders in different domains. The average experience of faculty of the
department is 12 years. Department is highly committed to impart quality education to
address the student needs. The Department has signed MOU with few IT companies and
other organizations. I am happy to inform you that nearly 90 % of the students getting
employment through campus placements in premier IT organizations. Some of the students
are into entrepreneurship activities with their own start-up companies. The Department has
incubation center also. The department has highly competent students who are undergoing
internship in reputed companies with stipend range of 50-80 thousand rupees per month.
With all these, the Undergraduate Programme is accredited by National Board of
Accreditation (NBA), New Delhi, and Permanently Affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological
University (VTU), Belagavi, and Securing University Ranks.
The Department has adopted the practice of Outcome Based Education (OBE).The
department hosts several activities like Technical fests, Alumni meet, Technical talks,
Seminars from most of the renowned industry and speculative personalities.

The department has set up a student chapter CSI in the campus to bridge the gap
between industry and academia with a vision “IT for Masses” thus enabling IT professionals
and computer users to work towards making the profession an area of choice amongst all
sections of the society. Under this chapter the Department has organized various activities
including technical talks, interactive sessions, and workshops. One of the best practices of the
department is Project Based learning which helps the students to explore the problems in the
current world scenarios and acquire deeper knowledge. Students are introduced to global
challenges and encouraged to take up projects in this direction. GEMS [Globarena E
Mentoring System] online interview skill training software developed by Globarena Software
Services has been introduced to train the students to excel in their placements.
Overall, the department is moving on the progressive path with support and cooperation of all
stakeholders.

Neural Networks and Deep Learning
Neural Networks
Neural networks, a beautiful biologically inspired programming paradigm which
enables a computer to learn from observational data. To put in a simple way, It is a
network artificially created to imitate a real brain. Humans use memory and a very
high form of thinking ability to make decisions.
Artificially created neural networks are designed to mimic the human brain using set
of instructions or algorithms. It contains a set of input and output nodes and a series of
layer networks between them. Each network consists of nodes which incorporate a
certain functionality and gives an output according to how it’s designed. Node is
similar to a neuron in the human brain and the nervous system. ANNs are incredibly
effective because you really don’t have to tell them how to do the job. Shown below
is an example of an Artificial Neural Network with 2 hidden layers.
![Page 23: Vision - BMSIT Bangalore · 2020-03-16 · Vision To develop ... the year 2016-17 even semester as the year was fruitful with many laurels including ... Keynote Speech in National](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042302/5ecd539a7b8a796bf06b9639/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)

Deep Learning
Deep learning, a powerful set of techniques for learning in neural networks. It’s a sub
field of Machine Learning. It helps in emulating the brain and gain knowledge so as to
make more accurate predictions automatically. The networks are trained and
evaluated using deep learning techniques. The advantage of deep learning is that the
program builds the feature set by itself without supervision. Unsupervised learning is
not only faster, but it is usually more accurate. The methodology of deep learning is
shown below.
![Page 24: Vision - BMSIT Bangalore · 2020-03-16 · Vision To develop ... the year 2016-17 even semester as the year was fruitful with many laurels including ... Keynote Speech in National](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042302/5ecd539a7b8a796bf06b9639/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)

By feeding data in and letting the model figure out for itself whether it has made the
right interpretation or decision about a given data element. This is how Artificial
Neural Networks and Deep Learning work in tandem to solve complex problems.
There are many types of ANN’s, but every type more or less works in a similar
methodology. They learn through observations and data provided to them at the time
of training of the network. If the data set is very small, it doesn’t learn in a
generalizable way and may give an incorrect prediction. So they need massive data to
train on. The process of training an ML(Machine Learning) model involves providing
an ML algorithm (that is, the learning algorithm) with training data to learn from. The
term ML model refers to the model artifact that is created by the training process.
After it’s trained, the model is given an input and it predicts an output based on the
training.
Now let’s see the application of all these and how it impacts the world.
Powering our smart phone
We use them almost every day in form of voice assistants. The voice input is broken
down into chunks, analyzed and the letters are predicted, which are arranged to form
words and phrases. Everything is done by powerful Artificial Neural networks.
![Page 25: Vision - BMSIT Bangalore · 2020-03-16 · Vision To develop ... the year 2016-17 even semester as the year was fruitful with many laurels including ... Keynote Speech in National](https://reader034.vdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022042302/5ecd539a7b8a796bf06b9639/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)

Voice Assistants can do many things and help us in setting reminders, making a call
and even sending a text. Google went a step ahead and came up with Google
Duplex.(Can be read in my previous post)
Medicine and Health Care
Predicting Myocardial Infarction or in simple terms a heart attack.
Physicians study had a diagnostic sensitivity of around 74% while the ANN has a
sensitivity of a whopping 96%. That is a massive leap ! Patients can be treated in a
way to prevent the attack or reduce the possibilities to certain extent.

Agriculture
Fruit grading and ripeness indicator. By using Image processing and Deep Neural
Networks, the ripeness of fruit can be predicted. It can be a reminder to pluck a fruit
or alert on a specific fruit if it has been infected with a disease and hence needs
attention. It can even predict in how many days fruits will ripen.
Finance and Banking
Signature Verification. Uses ANN’s with 2 hidden layers in the most basic
verification methods. Has an accuracy of about 90%. Image of signature is inverted
and broken down into binaries and then according to the network and prediction is
made.
Automobile Industry
Self Driving Cars – The talk of the town nowadays. We will see Fully automated
driving cars on road within 2 to 3 years. Rapid Development is being done in this
particular field. Deep neural networks, especially in the field of computer vision,
object recognition and so on, have often a lot of parameters, millions of them.
Nvidia’s Autonomous Car has a Convolution Neural Network of 27 million
connections and 250 parameters. That’s crazy ! It’s truly amazing how it learns to
drive by itself. Real time decisions are made and the results are improving day by day.

Social Media
One of the most commonly used feature used in Facebook is powered by Neural
Networks-Face Tagging. It instantly identifies which of your friends are in the photo
and prompts to tag them. Facebook Announced DeepText which analyses text and
recommends action if simple phrases like ‘I need to take a cab’ are typed and sent, it
will recommend a cab to the destination if it is mentioned anywhere in the
conversation.
So as we see, it’s everywhere around us working behind the scenes making our lives
simpler. Deep Learning and ANN’s are used in many more fields other than the above
mentioned. We are already seeing AI composed music. At the moment Deep Learning

is the best tool we have on the journey to Real or True AI. Now that chip
manufacturers have started integrating neural engines into the processor, it’s only a
matter of time before ANN becomes core to our daily lives. It will definitely play a
huge role in the future.
