PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Staff had a busy professional development day on Monday, where we had guest speaker Karen Dymke running a workshop on differentiation. Staff were then given some time in the afternoon to put into practise some of the strategies they had just learnt. Differentiation is the planning of classwork that aims to cater for a range of student levels; it is often the same work, but allows students to show their different levels of understanding. This strategy will be a focus in the 2019 Annual Implementation Plan, as a way of helping to build student engagement.

Vision and Values: WE NEED YOUR VOTE! It is now time for the school community to decide what words they would like our school to take on as our core values, which will help to shape our mission and vision for the future. Students have been surveyed during Home Groups this week and we are asking all other community members to complete a quick survey, found at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/8NRWC3S

The survey should only take about 2 minutes to complete, with the closing date being Sunday 11th November. If you are unable to complete the survey online, there are hard copies at the General Office.

Congratulations to the newest graduates of the ADVANCE CFA Youth Crew Program. They committed to 2 years of the program and have now completed their training. Congratulations also to Jonah who won

the Bruce Vine Leadership award out of all the Year 10’s across the 3 schools. Thank you to Shaun Thorpe for coordinating the program for our school, Joy Campbell for overall coordination and to the

many volunteers that assist with training the students and helping run the program.

HOMEWORK

Homework is set on a consistent basis. Students are required to hand in homework on the due date. Not submitting homework by the due date can result in marks being deducted, and in the worst-case scenario, a fail mark given on the end of semester report. ‘Homework Club’ is held each lunchtime, giving all students an environment to complete their set, overdue task(s). It is a student’s responsibility to collect homework if they have been absent. Creating a regular home study pattern will greatly benefit all students entering into the senior years of schooling. NB: Students may receive other homework as necessary for other subjects.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Dear families and students,

Already at the end of week 5! It is becoming more difficult to try and figure out where the time is going. Perhaps we could start talking like physicists and discuss the relativity of time and our place in space!

On Wednesday, the CFA Youth Crew had a celebration day in Tallangatta. All reports suggested that it was a great day and congratulations go to Jonah Cosgriff for receiving the Bruce Vine award. Yesterday and today our Outdoor Education class completed an overnight hike across Feathertop (I’m very, very jealous!). Well done to the students and thanks to the staff and volunteers who went. Next week Year 7 students are receiving their last round of immunisations (Tuesday morning) and on Wednesday, 9 students are attending the National Young Leaders Day in Melbourne.

Also occurring next week is the ‘Parenting in the Digital World’ seminar on Wednesday (see ad in this newsletter) which aims to increase the understanding of the technology used every day by our children. It is a difficult thing to deal with as it is constantly changing. The following are some more tips from the eSmart website to assist with cyber safety: Control the Troll Within There be trolls out there – beware! Don’t feed them, don’t give them what they want: an angry response. Block/Report the trolls. But also: resist the inner troll. If you’re not adding something positive to the debate online, don’t bother. Don’t be part of the problem. Cyberbullying and Harassment If you’re being targeted by this kind of behaviour, know what you can do, and where you can get help. Visit the National Centre Against Bullying website and the Office of the eSafety Commissioner's website. Keep Your Friends Close and Strangers at Arm’s Length Do you know how many true friends most people have? Three. Yup, those four thousand and fifty-two Facebook ‘friends’ are a combination of acquaintances, people-you-met-once, people-you-can’t-remember-meeting-once, and probably, some ‘randoms’. They don’t need

to know what you had for breakfast, or what you did last night, do they? Feel the Flow – Keep Your Life in Balance Technology is incredible. Gaming, networking, apps…online shopping! But make sure you take time out and find the right balance for you. Too long on tech can put the world out of whack. Have Fun, Friend Always remember to chill out and keep things in perspective. There’s too much information online to take it all in! Focus on each moment, and enjoy.

We have a lot of uniform items, including shoes, left over after the Yr 12 celebration. If you’re missing any items, please check the lost property in the main corridor.

Attendance Matters: Well done to last week’s canteen voucher winner – Stella Ceccanti! It’s never too late to improve attendance. Going to school more often makes a huge difference to educational outcomes. Everyday counts and we’re here to help. If you’re having any attendance issues with your child, please contact the relevant Year Level Co-ordinator or myself, so that we can work together to get your child to school every day.

House Competition: Don’t forget that to earn your house points, you must hand in your tokens!

HPV: The raffle prize of the 2019 Falls Creek Resort Entry was won by Scott Mann; congratulations!. We are having another working bee tomorrow morning at 9am, and a parent meeting next Tuesday 13th at 7pm. Hope to see you there. Thank you to all of our current sponsors – AGL, Foodworks, Falls Creek Coaches, Mount Beauty Auto Repairs, Falls Creek Resort Management, Rotary Club of Mount Beauty, Team Mount Beauty, The Angelini Family, Upper Kiewa Valley Lions Club, Tawonga South Butchery, Rocky Valley Sports, The Men’s Shed and the Alpine Shire Council.

Thank you, Ross Wilson

STAYING ESMART - WHAT TO DO IF YOU OR A FRIEND IS BEING BULLIED ONLINE

• If it’s your friend being targeted, reach out and make sure that they are OK

• Don’t try to “get back” at the bully – this could make things worse

• Take screenshots or keep URLs of the bullying • Report it to the platform that it’s on (e.g. the

social media or gaming platform) • Get support from a friend, family member or a

helpline • Contact The Office of the eSafety

Commissioner for advice about what to do

SCHOOL FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP Hi, I’m Grace and I go to Mount Beauty Secondary College. I came to the SFSL (school for student leadership) to gain new friends, skills and opportunities that we don’t get the chance to have every day. My main highlight so far has been either surfing with everyone and the rest days, which are just a fun time where we get to relax with everyone and be a supportive fun community. However, in saying that last night our expo team 2A ran the evening class, where we had a karaoke and dance night which was so fun and it was great to see everyone participating and enjoying themselves. SFSL is an amazing place and school. When I first came here I thought that it was completely different from the schooling lives that we are all used to, but now when I think about it they are quite similar. We still have classes and breaks and teachers, but we just are learning in a different environment. Of course we are also here overnight which makes it feel more comfortable and you get used to it more. It is also more student led, rather than the teachers leading us we are led more by our peers. Each day we have two different student leaders. When I first did it I was very scared as I don’t really enjoy public speaking, but after getting up there and doing it, you realize that it’s fine and that you are speaking to your friends and peers, not just a random group of strangers which I think helps. I would definitely recommend this experience to everyone. It is such an amazing opportunity and from being here I have learnt that we need to take every opportunity that we are given because we may never get them again. Signing off, Grace. Expression of Interest forms have been given out to current Year 8 students regarding School For Student Leadership 2019. Forms are due Friday 16th November

JOHN MONASH REGIONAL EXCHANGE On the 22nd July Nick and I made our way down to Melbourne to participate in the John Monash Regional Exchange program. The John Monash Regional Exchange program is a program aimed at year 10 students in regional Victoria that are passionate about science and its associated technologies. John Monash is a specialist selective science school and is one of only two in Australia. While there, Nick and I stayed with a host family and were students at John Monash. We participated in usual classes like maths and english, but also participated in electives. Both Nick and I participated in Big Data, a class on computer coding and representing data collected effectively. I participated in an Analytics and Spectroscopy class and learnt how to use different analytical techniques like titration, colorimetry and chromatography. As part of the program we participated in the core science class and began a scientific investigation that we were to present at the Australian Science Fair. We travelled down to Melbourne in order to present our findings and I presented on The Effects of Australian Propolis on Staphylococcus Epidermidis. Bronwyn SCHOOL SOCIAL The Student Executive invite all students to attend this year’s school social in the Jessie Hollonds Studio on Friday 30th November from 7 - 10pm.
