Ride2School Day Many thanks to Mr Scoble for his organisation of
yesterday’s Ride2School Day. Thank you also to the
parents who assisted with the supervision of children on our
ride to school from the Lake Weeroona and Epsom ends of
the bike track. We encourage our students to be active by
riding, scooting or walking to school.
Religious Education
Religious Education for all children in Grades 1-6 will
commence next Term. The course used for Religious
Education lessons is the approved Department of Education
program that focuses on learning to work together and
caring for each other. Thanks to our team of trained C.R.E.
teachers who have volunteered their time to work with our
students and the local churches that assist with the purchase
of the approved worksheets for all children. If you do not
wish your child to participate in this non-denominational
program please inform the office, in writing, by next week
so that our information can be updated. For more
information on the program please see Mrs Jan Ellis.

Vision and Values At White Hills Primary School we are committed to providing students with tools for lifelong learning. We foster a climate which enables students to be adaptable learners and contribute productively in our constantly changing society.
Advise School of Changed Pick-up Arrangements If children are to be picked up early (and signed out of the school) by anyone other than their parent/guardian (this person must be
over the age of 18), it is essential that the school is informed of the changed arrangement. The school cannot allow someone who is
not the child’s parent/guardian to sign them out early unless we are advised. We appreciate your support in this matter.
Canteen Counter Sales: Purchasing Limits Please note that each child is limited to purchasing a maximum of one (1) ‘iced’ item (eg. slushy) and $1 of other items from
counter sales at the school canteen. Products available in our school canteen are from the approved ‘Healthy Canteen’ menu. We
would also ask that parents refrain from sending children to school with large denomination notes. Coins are a much better option
and counter sales should be seen as an occasional treat for children. We appreciate your support in this matter.
Education Week Open Day & Information Morning & Night The Open Day and Information Morning and Night for White Hills Primary School will be held during Education Week.
Open Day, on Tuesday, 20th May from 9.00am – 3.30pm, is an opportunity for parents, grandparents and friends to visit their
child’s class. It is also a great time for new parents to see our school in action and speak to Prep teachers about the terrific programs
available at our school.
A morning Information Session will be held in the school library on Tuesday, 20th May at 10.00am-11.00am, and an evening
session at 7.00pm –8.15pm. These information sessions are especially designed for Year 2015 Prep parents interested in choosing a
school for their child or have already chosen White Hills Primary.
Childcare is available at both these sessions.
Promoting Our School We have found that the best way to promote our school to new families is through you, our parents. If you know anyone moving
into our area, has a child attending your child’s pre-school or who has a Prep child for next year and has not chosen a school for
their child, talk to them about our school and please invite them to attend our information sessions. Perhaps you could come with
them to help them feel more comfortable. Remember that you, our parents, are the best ambassadors for our school.
Come Along Cup: Regular Attendance To promote regular attendance, our school conducts the ‘Come Along Cup’ program. Every Monday morning at assembly, the
grade with the best attendance for the week is awarded the golden ‘Come Along’ Cup. A display board for our Come Along Cup
results is set up in the hallway of the main building. Thanks to Miss Kirk for her coordination of this program in 2014.
It’s Not Okay to be Away Children should attend school every day unless they are ill or have a valid reason for being away. For example, a child’s birthday is
not a reason for being away from school. Studies show that children with more than 20 days of absence in a school year are
seriously at risk in their learning. They miss so much work and are not able to keep up with their peers!
If your child is absent for more than a day, please call the school and advise the classroom teacher of the reason. Our school’s
policy is for the classroom teacher to phone the parent after more than one day of unexplained absence. When your child returns to
school, please send them with a signed written note, explaining the reason for the period of absence.
Your support with regular attendance is appreciated.
End of Term Dismissal Students will be dismissed at 2.30pm on Friday, 4
th April. We will have lunch from 1.30pm until 2.30pm, but due to DEECD
regulations, we are unable to dismiss students until 2.30pm. However, parents may collect children at 1.30pm if they wish.
Please make sure you sign out your child/children before taking them home if you leave early.
School Photos School photos will be taken on Wednesday, 7
th May. Individual and Family
order forms will be distributed at the beginning of Term 2.
Saver Plus Program for Grade 6 Parents Grade 6 students will bring home a letter today from Haven (formerly LM
Housing) that gives details about the Saver Plus program. This program
supports families to save each month, for 10 months, and then match their
savings dollar for dollar up to $500, see the letter for further details.
School Sores (Impetigo) We have been notified of a case of school sores (Impetigo). Any child or
adult with school sores is excluded from school until treatment has
commenced. Sores on exposed surfaces must be covered with a watertight
dressing. Please advise the school if your child is diagnosed with school
sores.

Reading With Your Child Children who are read to at home daily for just 15 minutes can improve their reading ability at school by up to 40%, according to a
Centre for Community and Child Health study. Reading to a child is not only a great way for parents to bond with their child, it
stimulates the child to develop communication skills that will assist them at pre-school and school. Some ways to increase your
young child's reading.
Give children their own books at an early age, even if they chew them.
Read in lots of different locations; on the bus, at home, in waiting rooms.
Let your child hold the books and turn the pages.
Encourage children to be active during reading; pick some books they can act out.
Join a library.
Don't make reading a test- you’re not teaching them to read, you’re teaching them to enjoy books.
Work It Off The executive director of www.fitness2live.com.au Michael Mc Coy, says the reason most people eat fast food is because it is
convenient, we like the taste and it's reasonably inexpensive. But even though those foods may be easy, burning them off is not.
It takes an adult about 40 minutes of circuit training at the gym to burn off one meat pie. To burn off a burger, large chips and a
large soft drink we would need to walk for 3 hours, while we need to walk for 32 minutes to cancel out a small chocolate bar. To
test more foods or activities, visit www.fitness2live.com.au
WHPS Multi-Age Day, Next Thursday, 27th March Our school has registered to be part of the 2014 National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence.
The National Day of Action is Australia’s key anti-bullying event for schools. It’s a day where school communities across Australia
‘take a stand together’ against bullying and violence. Though the official national day is Friday, 21st March, we will be conducting
our Multi-age Day next Thursday, 27th
March due to our grades 3-6 swimming program taking place during this particular week.
On this day, our students will undertake four workshops in mixed-age (Prep to 6) groups, with our younger children matched to
older buddies. The workshops will focus upon giving students a common language and strategies for dealing with bullying,
harassment and violence when it arises.
White Hills PS is dedicated to creating supportive school environments for students and their families. By working together we are
sending a clear message to young people that bullying and violence, in or outside of school, is not okay at any time.
The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is an initiative of all Australian education ministers and is coordinated
by the Safe and Supportive School Communities (SSSC) Working Group, with representatives from all Australian educational
authorities.
Parent Session – Come and Join Us from 12:30-1:30pm
We will be conducting a parent information session from 12.30pm-1.30pm on the day, with an opportunity for you to join your
children for a sausage sizzle lunch at 1.30pm, provided by our Parent Club.
This session will equip you with information, strategies and resources to counter bullying, harassment and violence should it arise
with your children. Check out the ‘Bullying No Way!’ website at www.bullyingnoway.gov.au, which offers practical resources and
information for parents.

Teach Your Child To Bounce Back From Life’s Uncertainties: Part 1 A selection from an article by Alison Campbell Rate
A sense of disappointment and rejection can be very distressing for children and as parents we hate to see them suffer. This
generation of parents is trying to protect children more and more from life’s disappointments and difficulties. Ironically by doing
this we make it harder for them to cope successfully and increase the vulnerable child’s chances of being hit by depression.
According to Seligman, author of The Optimistic Child, a key contributor to the high level of depression found in children is the
avoidance of feelings such as anger, sadness and anxiety- wrongly described as “bad” feelings.
Without opportunities to confront uncomfortable feelings children do not learn how to deal with them. For example, the parent who
buys the younger child a toy to compensate for his sister having a birthday party denies him the opportunity to develop essential
coping skills such as tolerating frustration and disappointment. Rather than teach your child to avoid uncomfortable feelings, teach
him to recognise them as valuable signals that here is an opportunity for personal mastery. This brings a sense of optimism even
when experiences are difficult.
Mr Damien Jenkyn, Principal
Congratulations to our birthday children
Music / Drama News Band & Choir Please note that the choir will be singing a song as a part
of Anzac day Service on Thursday, 25th
April at 2.45pm
As I will not be at school on this day, the choir will be
conducted by Mr Trewartha; and a big thank you to him
for his assistance with this. The song they are preparing
is an excellent song for Anzac day, titled “Rusty it’s
Goodbye”
Alpha Productions Presents “King Arthur” Next term the whole school will have the opportunity to
view a performance by Alpha Productions called “King
Arthur”. This theatre group has been attending this
school for many years and always put on a fantastic
show. The show is set for Tuesday, 29th
April with two
performances in the morning in the school sports shed.
If children have not prepaid the performances part of
the Special Events, the cost is $8.00 and must be paid
before the performance.

Sport News Ride to School Day Wednesday was ‘Ride to School Day’, a great opportunity to take an active healthy approach to coming to school. It was a beautiful
morning with many students taking advantage of the two riding groups that were organised. Once at school each grade had a
selection of fruit to eat, kindly donated by Long Gully IGA. We had 74 students ride, 37 scoot and 59 walk. The Bendigo Northern
District Community Enterprise also donated pedometers for us to use to continue to encourage physical activity within our school on
a regular basis. These pedometers will be used to track grade 3-6 students during their cross country training with prizes being
awarded for the most steps from each grade. Also a big thank you to the teachers and parents that supported the ride.
Dragon Mile Easter is fast approaching and as usual the parade is a centre piece to Easter festivities in Bendigo. Prior to the parade there is the
running of the Dragon Mile on Sunday, 20th
April. This 1.6km run is a great opportunity for students to participate in one of
Bendigo’s great running events and is also terrific training for the upcoming School and District cross country events. You can enter
the event online at http://bendigoharriers.com/dragon_mile.html

Prep News Language Hints For The Week There is good data to show that the more often you sit around a dining room table and have a conversation around a meal, the better
the language development of children. Children are sitting in front of televisions more and computers playing computer games. It's
dinner in front of the television and video games before bed. These societal changes have resulted in some children having less
exposure to talk and less practise talking to others. Some speech problems result from biological factors with children having
difficulties with correctly hearing or producing sounds but there has been an increased number of children with speech delays that
could be helped through interaction and talk with others. (Comments from child psychologist Michael Carr-Gregg)
From an article written by Paul Jennings- an author who has written many books for boys
Fathers that read and write at home provide a good role model for boys. Neuroscientists have found that much of the way children
behave is based on imitation. Fathers who read are likely to have sons who read. It doesn't matter what the reading material is. It can
be car magazines, newspapers, novels, sport's books, etc. Just by reading for pleasure the father shows that this is something that
men do by choice. It tells a boy that books are part of the male culture and may be read with pride. This is why it is important for
men to join in the reading of the nightly bedtime story. Reading a story aloud is a wonderful bonding activity and expression of
love. But when a father reads, it is also an example of a masculine activity.
Congratulations to our Students of the Week
Pupils Of The Week Congratulations to Larni G, Fenian S, Ella F and Charlie W, our Prep ‘Pupils of the Week’ for this week. These Preps are

Bookpack Items Grade 1/2 teachers are asking that if parents have their child’s
spare books, pencils, whiteboard markers etc that came in the
school Bookpacks at home, can you please send these items to school. We are finding that many children have run out/lost their
grey lead pencils or whiteboard markers and it would be much easier if the spares were kept at school and readily available when
needed.
Being on Time for School It is extremely important that students are at school on time every day. This is to ensure they do not miss out on the introduction to
lessons. The music for the start of the day begins at 8:50am and plays for 10 minutes. This is to allow the children time to come in,
take their shoes off and get themselves organised for the day. If students are late, they need to be signed in by a parent at the office
and the sign in ticket is to be given to the classroom teacher.
Lost Spelling homework As previously mentioned, spelling books are coming home weekly for students to practised their words. Some students have lost
their spelling book however. If this is the case for your child, we are asking if you could please send along an old scrap book or
exercise book as a replacement. We appreciate your support with this.
Junior School Teachers

effectively deal with them. During the day, your child will go through 4 multiage workshops to help them to better manage a
bullying situation both to themselves and to others around them. The day will conclude with a family sausage sizzle lunch between
the Peter Davey building and the oval. We hope to see you there.

master builders including LEGO Ninjago, a huge train layout, LEGO City, Star Wars, LEGO Friends and many unique creations.
We’ll have a huge brick pile to play with in the LEGO play area and lots of DUPLO for the little fans as well.
Tickets are only available online. The exhibition has staggered entry times to avoid over-crowding in the venue and to give
