We are one hospital with two unique campuses that work together to fulfill our mission of improving and strengthening lives in our community by providing exceptional

healthcare. OneVision illustrates Baton Rouge General’s single strategic direction for the future, and in partnership with medical staff from all specialty areas, we are moving forward with a clear strategic focus for each campus.

At Mid City, we are focused on continued development of key clinical programs that serve the unique health needs of the community, and through the expansion of medical education and training this campus is positioned to excel as an academic medical center.

We envision Bluebonnet as the region’s destination hospital for specialty services and wellness. At the Bluebonnet campus, we are focused on providing high quality, innovative specialty care in oncology, cardiology and other areas such as women’s health specialties, and continued facility enhancements.

Collaboration and communication with our medical staff is key to the success of OneVision and I want to thank you for your continual leadership, and your commitment to our hospital and our patients as we advance this initiative.

Physicians were recognized for their leadership and quality excellence recently at Baton Rouge General’s Medical Staff Appreciation Gala.

The J. Benton Dupont Medical Staff Leadership Award recognizes physicians for outstanding leadership and dedication to compassionate patient care.

The BRG Excellence in Quality Award recognizes physicians’ exceptional efforts to provide top quality care in four core quality domains – outcomes, utilization, evidence-based practice and patient satisfaction.

Thank you for your collaboration and commitment to excellence in care.

Physician Honors

It was a pleasure to see the hard work of our medical staff and all our clinicians recognized on the front page of The Advocate recently. Thanks to your leadership and commitment, Baton Rouge General earned an A in Hospital Safety Score, a nationwide ranking of hospitals by the Leapfrog Group – the only hospital in our area to receive this grade. Click here to read The Advocate article.

The new "Hospital Safety Score" was issued by The Leapfrog Group, a non-profit employer-sponsored organization, that reviewed 2,651 facilities across the country and generated a report card for each, with an A, B, C, D or F letter grade. Twenty-six measures were utilized by the Leapfrog Group to determine hospitals’ safety scores, including 15 process or structural measures and 11 outcome-based. Only 8 of the 26 were self-reported and the remainder were validated from Center for Medicare Services Hospital Compare.

As with any full-service hospital performance comparative report, strengths and improvement areas always emerge. These scores keep us all striving for improvement, which can only make us better caregivers. Baton Rouge General stands together with all hospitals in our community...we are all on the journey to perfection in how we take care of our patients and their families. We should all be proud of the high quality care, research and medical education offered right here in the Greater Baton Rouge area.

Recently completing Patient Safety Fellowships as part of the American Hospital Association’s

National Patient Safety Fellowship program, Dr. Robert Kenney, Medical Director

for Quality Care and Patient Safety, and Wanda Hughes, RN, PhD, Director of Quality & Patient Safety, are yet another reflection of our medical and clinical staff’s commitment to the highest

standards for patient safety and quality performance.

For more than 40 years Baton Rouge General’s Mid City campus has provided highly specialized burn care services to the entire Gulf Coast region, including the area’s petrochemical corridor. Treating more than 90 percent of all inpatient burns in the Baton Rouge Metro area, Mid City’s regional burn service plays an integral role in supporting Louisiana’s industrial and petrochemical sectors as well as the surrounding communities.

The hospital’s burn center is uniquely designed to provide all phases of burn care – from inpatient burn care to outpatient rehabilitation – to ensure smooth transitioning through the continuum of care. The burn center staff includes three board-certified general surgeons with more than 50 years of combined burn care experience as well as a team of highly skilled burn care nurses, social workers and technicians. Baton Rouge General’s burn program also includes pediatric burn services at the Bluebonnet campus and has three pediatric surgeons on staff.

Just over 100 burn centers remain open in the U.S. today and that number is shrinking as burn facilities are closing because of the challenges presented by the complexity and high costs of treatment for burn care. In addition, the severe national shortage of burn surgeons and clinical burn specialists presents staffing challenges for burn centers. With the limited number of burn

specialists, burn centers must offer the most advanced clinical setting to attract qualified staff.

“Mid City’s burn center is a vital provider for complex burn treatment in our region, and reinvesting in the burn program will ensure that we can continue to offer critical regional burn care services in the future,” said Ernest Mencer, MD, Medical Director for Baton Rouge General’s Burn Center.

Baton Rouge General is committed to protecting this critical service for our region and has already begun to make investments in the burn center. Through financial support from community partners, the burn center waiting area was transformed from a basic, one-room style space to a family-friendly area offering families comfort and privacy during those first critical days following a severe burn. The new waiting area renovation completed Phase One of a Three Phase total renovation of Baton Rouge General’s Burn Center.

Specialized emergency care for seniors is an emerging national trend according to a recent Louisiana Medical News report, citing Mid City’s Seniors ER as the only emergency department in the Southeast region dedicated to senior care. Baton Rouge General is part of a small

but rapidly growing number of hospitals nationwide with emergency departments focused on the unique medical needs of seniors.

Emergency departments at both Baton Rouge General campuses are seeing increases in ER visits among senior patients age 65 and older despite a mild Flu and Pneumonia season this year.

“The need for senior focused emergency care continues to increase as our community’s baby boomers age. We have seen the benefits for our seniors – not only by making their

ER experience more comfortable but also helping with special needs and resources to ensure a safe transition home after discharge from the hospital,” said James Crowell, MD, Baton Rouge General’s Chief of Emergency Services. “Post-discharge follow-up calls to our senior patients by our specially-trained Geriatric Emergency Nursing Education (GENE) certified nurses are important to coordinating a safe transition home,” added Baton Rouge General’s Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nursing Officer Anna Cazes, DNS, RN.

MOVING DIRT

Thanks to our medical staff’s input and guidance, Baton Rouge General’s expansion plans for the Bluebonnet campus are taking shape! We began breaking ground on the first phase of construction in April and are progressing as scheduled.

The Bluebonnet expansion project includes construction of an innovative new surgical space and a state-of-the-art medical office building. OR expansion construction has already begun, and we are on target for our fall 2012 completion. The OR expansion includes four new operating rooms and a hybrid operating suite in addition to current enhancements including daVinci, our minimally invasive robotics technology.

Phase one of construction on the medical office building has also begun and is projected for completion by year end 2013. Physicians have begun expressing interest in office space, and interest meetings are currently available for scheduling.

“ Under the direction of a multi-disciplinary physician steering committee, the new hybrid OR has been designed ergonomically to enhance workflow and will offer exciting advancements for all our surgical specialists including accommodating the future development and expansion of the General’s minimally invasive surgical program,” said Jeffrey Littleton, MD, Baton Rouge General’s Chief of Surgery.

The physicians, nurses and staff of Baton Rouge General achieved 100% on the ACC/AHA national “door to balloon” time quality guideline for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients. The ACC/AHA recommends a door to balloon interval of no more than 90 minutes. Door to balloon time measurement in emergency cardiac care starts when patients reach the hospital’s ER door and ends when the catheter guidewire crosses the culprit lesion and the balloon is deployed in the cardiac cath lab. Baton Rouge General’s median door to balloon time for qualified heart attack patients is 65 minutes – on par with the national median.

“In cardiac care ‘time is muscle’ – delays in AMI treatment increase the likelihood and amount of cardiac muscle damage. The streamlined process among multiple clinicians from ER staff to the cardiac care team members is critical for optimal patient outcomes,” said Steven Kelley, MD, Baton Rouge General Chief of Cardiology. “Congratulations to our physicians, nurses and medical staff for their exceptional teamwork and exceeding national quality standards in heart care.”
