  • Welcome to Trinity!

Though we cannot be with you in-person today, we’re glad to have you join us online.

Here at Trinity, we strive to follow our Lord Jesus in fully welcoming everyone into community. We seek to provide a place of true sanctuary in a world that too often offers judgment instead of grace and exclusion rather than embrace. As a Reconciling In Christ congregation, we rejoice to fully welcome LGBTQIA folks. We celebrate racial and ethnic diversity as a gift to the community. We seek to include those who are dealing with physical challenges and developmental disabilities. Beyond all this, we happily include people wherever they are on their faith journey, including seekers with deep doubts and questions, those who are new to the faith, and seasoned long-time believers. In short, we believe that when Jesus commanded his followers to share the Gospel with ALL people – he meant it! Welcome!

Prelude: “Se Ela Perguntar”……………………..…………………………………………………………….. Dilermando Reis

    Word of Welcome

    Confession and Forgiveness:

All may make the sign of the cross, the sign that is marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins.

P Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, whose mercy is poured out upon all people, whose goodness cascades over all creation.

    C Amen.

P Let us confess our sin, trusting in the abundant grace of God.

    Silence is kept for reflection.

    P Holy God,

C you search us and know us.

You are acquainted with all our ways.

We confess that we are mired in sin—our own sins and the broken systems that bind us.

We hear you calling us to serve and to love, but we ignore your voice.

We distrust those who are not like us.

We exploit the earth and its resources and fail to consider generations to come.

Forgive us, gracious God, for all the ill we have done and the good we have left undone.

    Even before the words of repentence are on our tongues, O Lord, you know them;

receive them in your divine mercy. Amen.

P How vast is God’s grace!

Through the power and promise of + Jesus Christ, our sins are washed away and we are claimed as God’s

own beloved. In the wake of God’s forgiveness, we are called to share loving community living out Christ’s

justice and the Spirit’s reconciling peace.

    C Amen.

L Word of God, word of life.

    C Thanks be to God!

    First Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-10

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord under Eli. The word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were

not widespread. 2At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his

room; 3the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord, where the ark of

God was. 4Then the Lord called, “Samuel! Samuel!” and he said, “Here I am!” 5and ran to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for

you called me.” But he said, “I did not call; lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6The Lord called again,

    “Samuel!” Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, my son;

lie down again.” 7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to

him. 8The Lord called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, “Here I am, for you called

me.” Then Eli perceived that the Lord was calling the boy. 9Therefore Eli said to Samuel, “Go, lie down; and if he calls

you, you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10Now

the Lord came and stood there, calling as before, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is

    listening.”

    Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:12-20

“All things are lawful for me,” but not all things are beneficial. “All things are lawful for me,” but I will not be

dominated by anything. 13“Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food,” and God will destroy both one and

the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14And God raised the Lord

and will also raise us by his power. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take

the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that whoever is united to a

prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, “The two shall be one flesh.” 17But anyone united to the Lord

becomes one spirit with him. 18Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator

sins against the body itself. 19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you

have from God, and that you are not your own? 20For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

For the Psalm: “Psalm 139” ………………………………………………………………………………….….. Allan Mahnke

Please join in singing the refrain at the beginning after the song leader, and after each verse sung by the song leader.

P The holy Gospel according to John, the 1st chapter.

C Glory to you, O Lord.

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

    C Thanks be to God!

    Gospel Reading: John 1:43-51

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” 44Now Philip was from

Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. 45Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom

Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” 46Nathanael said to him, “Can any-

thing good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” 47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward

him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get

to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you

are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you

under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see

heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”

    Offering

    Peace

    Prayers of Intercession:

P Drawn together in the compassion of God, we pray for the church, the world, and all those in need.

    A brief silence.

    After each petition:

    P Lord, in your mercy,

    C hear our prayer.

    The prayers conclude:

P All these things and whatever else you see that we need, we entrust to your mercy; through Jesus Christ

    our Lord.

    C Amen.

    Apostles' Creed:

C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

    born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at

the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins,

the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Raised to new life, filled with the Holy Spirit, and gifted richly by God, we respond with joy and thanksgiving for all that

God has first given us. You may share your offerings by mailing your checks to the church office or by using your

P By your Spirit bless us and this meal, that, refreshed with your heavenly food, we may be light for the world,

revealing the brilliance of your Son.

    C Amen. Come, Holy Spirit.

P Through him all glory and honor is yours, Almighty Father, with the Holy Spirit, in your holy Church,

    both now and forever.

    C Amen.

    Thanksgiving at the Table:

P Blessed are you, O holy God: you are the Life and Light of all. By your powerful word you created all things.

Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the nations.

Blessed are you for Jesus, your Son. He is your Light, shining in our darkness and revealing to us your mercy

    and might.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his

disciples, saying, “Take and eat, this is my body given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, “This cup is the new

covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me.”

We remember his preaching and healing, his dying and rising, and his promise to come again.

C Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

P We await that day when all the universe will rejoice in your holy and life-giving light.

    C Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

JANUARY MISSION POSSIBLE Recipient: Bridges to Home

OUR JANUARY MISSION POSSIBLE Recipient is "Bridges to Home"— “Bridges to Home is a shared effort by the ELCA Lutheran churches of Evanston to help homeless young people in Evanston obtain safe, secure housing and move toward independence and success in life. Our program is a follow-on to another community effort called "Our House" which provides a first step in the program, providing

homeless young people housing in a group environment and a number of resources intended to help them negotiate life successfully. As they

grow and respond to the care given in this program, they become eligible for our program, Bridges to Home, in which they move out of the group

living arrangement into an independent apartment with one roommate. In this time, they continue to receive supportive services and counsel

through the "Our House" project. Ultimately, when they have their legs under them, they will "graduate" to fully independent living. The update

received in October from the co-chairs of the Bridges to Home project, about the time when we gear up to plan the Cabaret fundraiser which we

were unable to hold in October:

Hello friends, This is about the time when we usually get in gear to plan the Cabaret, but alas, not this year. However, Bridges still exists and needs money now, maybe more than ever. As we reported last fall, “one young man moved out, one was in the process of moving out, and two more had moved in. In addition, Connections planned to create more apartments with Bridges as the model. Because of the need to meet the immediate emergency need to house people, creating another new apartment with social services support may be on hold, but our Bridges lives on and needs our full support. We hope that all 5 of our churches can meet their pledged support this year and perhaps do even more to make up for the lost Cabaret funds.

We hope that you will help as you are able with this important shared ministry. Your gifts to Bridges to Home may not bring change on a global

scale, but they just might change the whole trajectory of life for the two young people we help this year! To support Bridges to Home, make

checks payable to Trinity and note Mission Possible on the memo. If you wish to give online using Tithe.ly:

https://tithe.ly/give_new/www/#/tithely/give-one-time/971797 and indicate Mission Possible. Thank you.
