Introduction Virtualization is the ability to run multiple virtual machines

on a single part of hardware. The hardware runs software which enables you to install multiple operating system which are able to run simultaneously and independently, in their own secure environment.

Virtualization allows you to run multiple operating system in virtual machines on a single computer. Each copy of an operating system is installed into a virtual machine.

4

Why used? The main objective of virtualization is to increased use of hardware resource and

to reduce management and resources cost.

Time, money and energy saved

Testing and disaster recovery : Once installed, a virtual machine and its virtual hard disks can be considered a "container" that can be arbitrarily frozen, copied, backed up, and transported between hosts.

High availability

It improves scalability or flexibility to the network

Virtual machine A virtual machine is a collection of virtual hardware that creates a standard x86 or x64 PC

environment that allows for the installation of a supported guest operating system.

Virtual machine are made up of a) virtual CPU b) virtual Hard disk c) RAM d) virtual network Adapters e) SCSI adapters, serial ports, parallel ports etc

Today’s the most well known and widely used virtualization software are VMware oracle virtual box Microsoft virtual pc/Hyper-v (Microsoft os compatible only)

7

Two types of virtualization 1) Host OS Based Virtualization (Type-2 Hypervisor )2) Bare-metal Hypervisor (Type-1 Hypervisor )

1) Host OS based virtualization A host-based virtualization systems requires an operating system (such as window or linux) to be installed on the computer.

8

2) Bare-metal Hypervisor (Type-1 Hypervisor )

A bare-metal hypervisor system does not require an operating system. The hypervisor is the operating system.

NOTE: Hypervisor : virtualization software : also called virtual machine manager is a program that allows multiple operating system to share a single hardware host.

InstallationCreating a Virtual Machine Let’s begin by opening VMware Workstation from the Start menu. Alternatively, you can type, “VMware” in the instant search field and select VMware Workstation from the list of programs (Figure 1).

12

Next, click File | New | Virtual Machine. A wizard appears to create a new virtual machine as shown in Figure 2.

13

Click “Next” and choose how you want to load Windows 7. You can load it from installation media (DVD) or you can use an ISO image. Here we are using ISO image (Figure 3)

14

Next, select “Installer disc image file (ISO)” and browse to where your Windows 7 ISO image resides. Click “Next” and enter the Windows 7 product key (Figure 4).

15

Click “Next”, and enter a virtual machine name and choose a location for your virtual machine to reside. You can simply accept the defaults and move forward in the installation (Figure 5).

16

Click “Next” and accept (Figure 6) the default disk size of 40 GB. You can increase or decrease this size as you see fit.

17

Click “Next” and you can customize your virtual machine hardware prior to beginning the Windows 7 virtual machine Operating System (OS) load (Figure 7). For example, you can add disks, serial ports, and printers. You can also remove unnecessary hardware such as floppy drives and sound cards (Figure 8).

18

Click OK and Finish and Windows 7 begins to load (Figure 9). Since you entered the product key, VMware Workstation enters an “Easy Install” mode. Just sit back, relax, and a Windows 7 virtual machine is installed.
