    1. University of MedellinOur university is located in the southwest of Medellin, the second biggest city in Colombia. The city isdistinguished for its beautiful landscape and warm and happy people, and its hospitable atmospherehas charmed visitors worldwide.

    Upon entering the campus, the visitor will be not only be impressed by the architecture of theuniversity, but also by its lush lawns and abundant greenery which form the backdrop of theuniversity buildings.

    1.1 History of the UniversityThe University of Medellin was founded in 1950 by a group of 76 Antioquian intellectuals whowanted to create an academic environment free of all political, religious, social, and racialdistinctions.

    Today, about 12,000 students are enrolled and we actively promote their incorporation in the worldas young professionals who will someday contribute to solving key problems in their respective fieldsof study. We offer students a superior higher education through academic excellence, a strongculture of research, and a firm emphasis on social responsibility with the intention of contributing tothe regional and national development of Colombia in an international context.

    Currently, the university is the only Institution of Higher Education which has received the Certificateof Social Responsibility awarded by the organization Fenalco Solidario. It has also received thecertification of quality ISO 9001:2008, making it a part of a select group of 22 credited nationaluniversities that maintain high standards of educational quality.

    We offer the community a variety of activities at diverse hours that enhance their quality of life anddevelop their personal potential. Using the multiple facilities and academic spaces on campus tocarry out these activities, the university ensures that its members receive a well rounded education.

    Every semester the university plans a month-long program consisting of a number of activities andworkshops designed to help community members maintain their well-being. The intention of theprogram is to promote wellness in all facets of community members lives, in order to ensure their

    happiness not only with themselves, but with the institution and society at large..

    1.4Language CenterThe Language Center promotes the learning of second languages through different courses and levelsin English, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, and Portuguese. Furthermore, it offers Spanish for Foreigners,a new academic program with high academic standards designed for foreign residents in Colombiaand to the international community in general, with the intention of offering a dynamic learningenvironment in order to perfect students communicative abilities in Spanish.

    3. Governmental Processes3.1 Visa: Foreign students who study at the University must obtain a temporary visa from theColombian embassy or consulate closest to their place of residence before arriving to Colombia.

    The visa may be in process when the student receives acceptance from the university. The admittedmust contact the embassy or consulate for the application requirements and necessary costs of thevisa as well as its expected date of delivery. You can find information regarding the requirements,costs, and places where you can solicit your visahere.

    3.2 Cdula de Extranjera: All foreign students have a period of fifteen days after arriving to

    Colombia in which they must present themselves at the office ofMigracin Colombia located at Calle19 #80A-40, Barrio Beln la Nubia, Tel. (574) 562 2903 Lineal national: 018000957777. Hours ofassistance: Monday to Friday from 08:00 a.m. to 04:00 p.m.

    At this office students will register their visa and begin the process for their cdula de extranjera, adocument that is required for stays in the country longer than (3) three months. Students will berequired to bring the following in order to obtain their cedula:

    3.3 Health Insurance

    Every student must obtain international health insurance that covers medical assistance in the caseof illness or accident in Colombia. Obtaining this insurance is required for all students in order to beaccepted into an exchange program. Students will have to contact a company that offers this servicein their respective country in order to identify the best option according to their needs.

    4 HousingThe University of Medellin does not offer student housing to its foreign students. However, weprovide our students with the mentoring and help necessary in order to acquire temporary housingin the houses or apartments of currently enrolled students. This is made possible through ourprogram At Home (content 4.1), comprised of a group of university students who are eager toreceive foreign students and welcome them to Medellin. Through this program, students are not only

    For the first few days in Medellin we recommend that students find housing in a hostal. In whatfollows, you will find a list of some of the most well-known hostals in the city. Students should put

    In this way, foreign students have been able to improve their level of Spanish in a nativeenvironment, make new friends, and amaarse, or settle in, to our University, meanwhile enjoying

    the city of Medellin and other touristic sites of Colombia. The program benefits native students aswell as foreign students alike, as the program facilitates an intimate process of cultural and linguisticexchange that ultimately results in an easy acclimation process.

    Members of At Home also provide other services such as:

    - Picking up from the airport- Accompaniment during the process of solicitation of Cdula de Extranjera- Accompaniment in the opening of bank accounts- Help in buying cell phone- Help in finding housing, in the cases in which it is necessary-

    Advice regarding touristic activities and entertainment

    Furthermore, the group plans to organize academic and cultural events, consisting of touristic visitsand ecological outings designed to allow foreign exchange students get to know more of the city andits surrounding areas.

    4. Financing Your Exchange Program4.1 Free Exchange Program

    Would you like to travel to Colombia? As a foreign exchange student, you will be able to takeadvantage of the academic programs at the University of Medellin for free.

    The university invites all foreign exchange students to come to the University of Medellin and live inColombia free of tuition.

    Exchange students may study at the university for free for up to two semesters.

    Why do we offer free exchange programs at our university?

    As one of 22 accredited universities in Colombia we see ourselves as an emerging internationalinstitution that would like to project itself to the world. We seek to increase the number of foreign

    exchange students who visit our university in order to strengthen our process of internationalizationand foster an international academic community, as well as offer visiting students interculturalopportunities that will later benefit them in their personal and professional lives.

    Likewise, we are interested in creating new connections and alliances in order to expand ouracademic network in the world, in order to offer our students the opportunity to study abroad andexperience the multiple benefits of intercultural exchange.

    We only offer free admission to foreign students who do not exceed (2) two semesters of study.Foreign students who are interested in completing a full academic program at the University mustpay the full costs of the program desired.

    4.2Scholarship OpportunitiesDAAD (Germany): DAAD offers partial and complete scholarships for international pregraduate andpostgraduate study, as well as internships for both Germans citizens and citizens abroad. In order toapply for a scholarship with DAAD, the interested applicant must first obtain acceptance from theUniversity of Medellin as an exchange student or as a student of a complete program. For more

    information regarding the scholarships DAAD offers and the accompanying requirements, pleaseaccess the website ofDAAD.

    ICETEX (Colombia): ICETEX is a state governmental organization of that promotes scholarships forforeigners, especially for postgraduate programs in Colombian universities, with the intention ofpromoting Colombia as an international place for higher education. The entity also promotes theexchange of qualified Colombian citizens who wish to study abroad.For information regarding the dates of application, requirements, and more, clickhere.

    Fulbright (USA): Fulbright is an educational exchange program offered by the government of theUnited States. It annually awards close to 6,000 scholarships to U.S. citizens as well as foreign citizensalike, making it one of the largest and most diverse programs of its kind.

    In the United States, Fulbright scholarships are offered yearly in order to give students, professors,artists, and various other professionals the opportunity to teach at international universities,complete post-graduate study, and undertake research projects in one of over 140 countries thatparticipate in the program, of which Colombia is included. The scholarships, which are awardedthrough an open application process, are based on the academic merits and leadership capacities ofapplicant.

Students are able to live with a Colombian family during their stayThrough our new program At Home, students are able to stay in the house or apartment of one ofour students, allowing them to intimately get to know Colombian culture from a natives perspective,make new friends, and rapidly adapt to Colombian society. Sharing day-to-day experiences andfacilitating cultural exchange are the greatest advantages of this program, as well as the favorablecosts or possible exemption from pay depending on each students housing agreement.

    5. The University of Medellin boasts an international character while still retaining its uniqueColombian charm

    The university has over 50 connections with universities worldwide, allowing it to receive studentsfrom different counties as well as send native students abroad every semester.

    In our Language Center, we offer foreign languages such as English, Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, andPortuguese. At the same time, we offer Spanish courses for foreigners in three distinct levels that aretailored to the needs and proficiency of the student enrolled.

    We also carry out intercultural programs such as Jornada por Pases y Mundos (International Fair)and Una Mirada al Mundo, (A Look at the World) which allow students to enjoy internationalcooking workshops, movie showings, conferences, and artistic expositions aimed at increasingawareness of other cultures and promoting interaction with them.

    The University has not developed a community of foreigners due to its low number of foreignstudents, making it impossible for the exchange student to separate himself from Colombian cultureand Spanish language. Because of this, foreign exchange students will be able to make Colombianfriends rapidly as well as advance their Spanish, and get to know el argot paisa (slang), all of whichwill allow the student to experience the university a la colombiana.

    However, even though there are not many foreign students in our university, foreign students willnonetheless have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world in the city of Medellin.

    Medelln, City of Eternal SpringIn Medelln you will enjoy an average temperature of 18 to 28 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

    Everyday visitors will be able to enjoy the sunny climate as well as its soft breezes that travel across

    the entire city. This pleasant valley climate is due to the citys location between the mountain rangesof the Andes.

    365 days of the year, making Medellins climate a year-round pleasure.

    The pleasant combination of temperature, colors, winds, flowers, and the breathtaking locationbetween mountains earns Medellin its famous title as the City of Eternal Spring.

    2. La Feria de las FloresEvery year, during the first days of August, the famousFeria de las Flores takes place in Medellin,accompanied by sunny days and a climate that honors the phrase En Medelln, es Primavera. Thestreets and parks not only fill with flowers, but also with blissful travelers from all over the countryand world.

    La Feria de las Flores lasts about ten days and offers its visitors a variety of events that cater to alltastes, including: Desfile de Silleteros (Parade of Silleteros, the most prominent event), Feria NacionalEquina (National Equine Fair), Festival de Orquestas (Orchesta Festival), Festival Nacional de la Trova(National Festival of Poetry/Verse), Humorcity (Comedy Festival), Festival del Recuerdo y de laCancin Popular (Festival of Tradition and Folk Songs), Concurso de Mujeres Talento (BeautyPageant), Campeonato Nacional de Sonido sobre Ruedas (National Competition of Sound OverWheels), Desfile de Carros Clsicos y Antiguos (Parade of Antique Cars), Caminata Canina (DogWalk), musical and cultural events, procession of colorful buses and flowers, as well as others.

    During the festival, the whole city blossoms and the happiness of the people fills it with happinessand excitement. Furthermore, the parties that take place in the dance clubs during the festival areunforgettable. If youd like to experience a night of music, dance, good company, and great drinks,you must visit Medellin during the festival of the flowers.

    3. Tourist AttractionsMedellin is a city that offers its visitors and locals a variety of touristic attractions and entertainmentopportunities that satisfy all tastes and interests. For example, one is able to enjoy its diverse parksand wide plazas, as well as immerse oneself in its expansive world of regional, national, andinternational art in the citys many museums, theaters, or libraries.

    We recommend that you visit the Centro Administrativo la Alpujarra, one of the buildings that formpart of the cultural heritage of the city.
