Condition Prevalence

Pre-Hypertension 45%

Hypertension 36%

Overweight* 34%

Obese* 29%

Total Cholesterol 28%

Top Health Risks in 2014

* Per the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services, obesity is a major risk factor for several of today’s most serious health conditions and chronic diseases, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease and stroke, and osteoarthritis. Obesity also has been linked to many forms of cancer. Obesity presents challenges to workers compensation claims. There is a strong relationship between obesity and the rate of workers compensation claims filed. In 2007, Duke University Medical Center published results of a study showing the number of WC claims to be double in cases with obesity: • Obese BMI 11.65 claims per 100 • Normal BMI 5.8 claims per 100

* Data derived from: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15356665

The typical average is 55% of the workforce that is overweight or obese. The U.S. National average projected to be 75% by 2030

Condition Weight

Loss (or gain)

Associated Savings (or Increased Cost)

Type 2 Diabetes 1% $213/year

Diabetes and Weight Loss (or Gain)*

*Study conducted measuring weight gain/loss and related health care costs determined that weight loss significantly reduced diabetes-related costs. 50% of patients in the study experienced minimum weight gain as weight gain is an unfortunate consequence of some antidiabetic medications. Controlling for baseline factors in the regression model, the 1-year total health care cost following 1% weight loss (or gain) was $213 cost decrease (or increase). Economic benefit of weight loss was evident among type 2 diabetic patients on antidiabetic therapy, especially among obese patients.
