The Infant Years (0-4 Months)How does your baby’s physical, social/emotional and intellectual domains compare to the developmental milestones patterns? Is it typical?

Developmental Domain

Answer(Your original thoughts)

Prove It (give examples from your reports)(Cite your references)

Example (give examples from the book)(cite your references)

Physical

It seems that Adam had a typical birth, and is meeting milestones

Adam was born naturally about 10 hours of labor

-Adams crying is rhythmic and moderately loud when he is Hungary, wet or cold. If he is

startled, there is a sudden intake of breathe and a loud wail, followed by more deep breaths

and loud wails. (Virtual Child Reports

Women who are healthy when they become pregnant usually have a normal pregnancy,

labor and delivery. (Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors

Robert V. Kail & Theresa Zolner page 98).-Cry starts softly, then gradually becomes more

intense and usually occurs when a baby is hungry or tired; a mad cry is a more intense

version of basic cry; and a pain cry begins with a sudden, long burst, followed by a long pause,

and gasping. (Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors

Robert V. Kail & Theresa Zolner page 100).

Social / Emotional

It seems that when Adam cries I begin to lactate.

-It seems that Adam shows an interest about where he is or who is

around him.-It seems that Adam smiles at familiar

faces.

Adam is showing more intense interest in his surroundings. Adam is able to laugh at

surprising or funny things and is developing lots of cute little habits.

-Adam is getting more curious about the world around hm.

-Adam is irritated by loud noises and intense stimuli. (Virtual Child Reports).

During the first week after birth, infants begin to smile, but this type of smiling seems to be

related to internal physiological states.(Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail &

Theresa Zolner page 181).

Intellectual

It appears that Adam is familiarizing himself with everyone around him. Adam is able to focus his eyes on you. He

spends a lot of time studying your face and the

While awake infants spend time looking around. Sometimes they seem to be scanning

their environment broadly and sometimes they seem to be focusing on nearby objects.

faces of anyone who comes close to him.

-Adam makes little “ooo” sounds. (Virtual Child Reports).

(Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail &

Theresa Zolner page 136).

The Infant Years (5-8 Months)How does your baby’s physical, social/emotional and intellectual domains compare to the developmental milestones patterns? Is it typical?

Answer(Your original thoughts)

Prove It (give examples from your reports)(cite your references)

Example (give examples from the book)(cite your references)

Physical

It seems that Adam learns best interacting and playing.

Adam is able to find hidden objects (permanence test). Adam really likes this hiding games and shows by his interest that he wants it repeated. Adam has strong tendency to look in the old hiding place, and then get confused about where the object is, or forget about it.

(This curious error was first discovered by Piaget. Adam is crawling, sitting up, and

standing up. (Virtual Child Reports).

Piaget believed that children are naturally curious. Children development results from

their active engagement with their experiences in the world, which enables them to reach

more advanced levels of maturation. (Children: (Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail &

Theresa Zolner page 150).

Social / Emotional

It seems that Adam shows fear and preference for me over

others(especially when distressed).

Adam is sometimes a little reluctant to part from me at daycare and starts crying. He

usually gets over it quickly after I leave. Adam has strong emotional reactions and has

difficulty soothing himself back down. Adam is showing fearfulness around unfamiliar people

and clings to whoever is holding him. Adam shows fearfulness around unfamiliar people

and clings to whoever is holding him.(Virtual Child Reports).

Infants is an unfamiliar or ambiguous situation will look at a trusted caregiver, such as mother or father, as if searching for clues to help them know how to react, a phenomenon known as social referencing. ( Children: A Chronological

Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail & Theresa Zolner page 183).

-Respond differently to strangers and family members.

-shows mild to severe anxiety at separation from parent. (Ages and Stages: A brief

Overview Birth to 12 years).

Page 3: Virtual child infant and toddler

Intellectual

It seems that Adam is starting to show signs of independence.

Adam seems to have little goals that involve two steps planning ahead.

-Adam wants to be put down often to explore new things for longer period of times.

-Adam likes to try new and interesting activities and then begins to vocalize a lot and make eye

contact. (Virtual Child Reports).

About 6 months when infants become wary in the presence of unfamiliar adult, a reaction

known as stranger wariness. (Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian

Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail & Theresa Zolner page182).

The Infant Years (9-12 Months)How does your baby’s physical, social/emotional and intellectual domains compare to the developmental milestones patterns? Is it typical?

Developmental Domain

Answer(Your original thoughts)

Prove It (give examples from your reports)(cite your references)

Example (give examples from the book)(cite your references)

Physical

It seems that Adam wants to explore his surroundings by moving around

more.

Adam has learned to walk, he is also and efficient crawler, and is exploring his

environment eagerly.-Adam enjoys throwing every toy out of his crib

and watching what happens, he seems to expect me to keep putting them back.

-Adam has been in very good health and seems to be getting more resistant to colds. (Virtual

Child Reports).

By 12 months most babies crawl well and starts walking with holding onto furniture or with

adult help.-Can pull self to standing position

(Ages and Stages: A brief Overview Birth to 12 years).

Social / Emotional

It seems since 8 months of age Adam is continuing to show independence

and is easing his way into being comfortable with his surroundings;

however he is still a bit shy.

Adam is becoming more emotionally attached to my partner.

-Adam usually starts crying if the person tried to get too close. However, after meeting a

person two or three times, Adam is starting to stare at the person and manages a shy smile.

-Adam seems to be comfortable with my cousin Melody.

-Expresses fear or anxiety toward strangers.-Imitates adult actions.

-Wants caregiver or parent to be in constant sight.

(Ages and Stages: A brief Overview Birth to 12 years).

Page 4: Virtual child infant and toddler

-Adam is able to imitate new words and actions now. (Virtual Child Reports).

Intellectual

It seems that after the first permanence test at age 8 months.

Adam wants to play the permanence test game more often now.

At nine months Adam begins to understand a few words and point to something he wanted. At 12 months Adam now clearly understands a

couple of dozen words. Adam just recently pronounced his first clear word and pointed at

the object in question.-Permanence test again, Adam is able to find object after long delays. When hiding place is

switched, he no longer has the problem of searching at the more common of the two

hiding places. He wants to play the game over and over again.

(Virtual Child Reports).

Says first word-Basic principles of Piaget’s Theory according to

Piaget, children’s engagement with the word help them to develop schemas, psychological structures that organize experience. Schemas are mental categories or conceptual models of

interrelated events, objects and knowledge that children build as they gain experience with

situations, people and objects around them.(Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail &

Theresa Zolner page150).

The Toddler Years (2 Years old)How is your child progressing based on typical toddler development?

Give specific examples in the areas of Physical, Social / Emotional and Intellectual domains.

Developmental Domain

Answer(Your original thoughts)

Prove It (give examples from the report(cite your references)

Example (give examples from the book)(cite your references)

Physical

It seems that Adam experiments by trying new activities.

-It seems that Adam is developing Self-Awareness

Adam sometimes prefers quiet activities in his room, and sometimes likes more active games or sports. Adam is very into music, and often

dances in rhythm to my favorite music, and he tries to clap or sing along with songs played on

the television. -Adam is getting much better lately at playing

hide and seek and at searching for things around the house.

(Virtual Child Reports)

Memory strategies are activities that improve remembering. Some strategies help maintain

information in working memory.(Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail &

Theresa Zolner page 333&197).-Non social play: playing alone or watching

others play.-Parallel play- Playing alone but near others

while maintaining an interest in what the

Page 5: Virtual child infant and toddler

others are doing soon after first birthday.

Social / Emotional

It seems that Adam still has shyness around strangers and is still a

continuous trend.

Adam tends to be slow to warm up to new people, but is outgoing and friendly with

familiar people. Adam is less clingy and often wants to be put clown to explore.-Adam greets his main caregiver

enthusiastically at daycare.-Adams language skills are developing rapidly

and want to talk to me all the time.-Adam has some new emotions, he has shy smiles when asked to be in photographs,

looking guilty when he breaks something and embarrassment when he has a potty accident.

-Adam can get possessive over toys -Sometimes Adam throws tantrums

(Virtual Child Reports).

-Complex emotions such as feelings of guilt, embarrassment or pride, don’t emerge until 18-

24 months of age (Lewis 1992). -Act shy around strangers

-Very possessive-offers toys to other children then wants it back.

-Capable of frequent tantrums, which are often results of their inability to express themselves

through ideas.(Ages and Stages: A brief Overview Birth to 12

years).A typical 2 year old has a vocabulary of several thousand words and speaks in

sentences that are two or three words long.(Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail & Theresa Zolner page

184&250).

Adam often studies new things in his environment. Adam acts shy when looking in the mirror and uses the words me a lot and

wants to do thing himself. -Adam is aware of basic categories such as big

or little and blue or red. -At 2 years Adam is speaking mostly in three to

four words sentences and his vocabulary is expanding greatly because of his intense desire

to learn new words.-Adam is communicating better, he knows his

gender now, and has begun to categorize behavior and objects as suited to boys and girls.

(Virtual Child Repots).

By age 2 all children do this (Bullock & Lutkenhaus 1990; Lewis & Brooks-Gunn 1979).-About 18months, many children experience a naming explosion during which they learn new

words. -During preschool years, children learn about

gender roles, and gender stereotypes.(Children: A Chronological Approach Pearson 3rd Canadian Edition-Authors Robert V. Kail &

Theresa Zolner page 171&274).
