AS PRESIDENT of Virginia Western, I am delighted to introduce myself to those of you who are registering or considering registering for classes at our college for the fall semester. I am committed to providing you the opportunity to achieve your dreams and aspirations. Our business is to serve you and help you advance in your academic program of choice. We are a dynamic college that can provide you with the necessary elements to move ahead to a four-year college or university or prepare you for the workforce in a number of career choices.

We have a professional faculty and staff that will make every effort to ensure that your experience at Virginia Western is productive and pleasant. The classes are small, and personal attention is given to our students on a daily basis. We want to help you succeed, and we look forward to assisting you in designing a program of study that will meet your schedule and time constraints if you are working.

At Western you have many choices. We have a full range of distance education courses that you can take at home to reduce driving to our campus. We also have both day and evening classes and some on weekends. We prepare our schedule to meet your needs and lifestyle. Also the college has many clubs, student activities, and internships available for you. In addition, our tuition is low and a full package of financial aid opportunities are available for you. The college's courteous and attentive financial and admission counselors are also ready to help you.

I hope you see the many benefits of Virginia Western, and I look forward to seeing you this fall. I promise that you will have a positive experience and one that you will remember.

WITH MANY VIRGINIA WESTERN STUDENTS having full time job offers before they graduate, is it any wonder the College’s Communication Design program is one of the finest for filling the employment pipeline with entry-level graphic design and digital prepress technicians?

“Our fast paced and realistic learning environment along with our leading edge technology and ‘real world’ highly experienced faculty are the strengths of our program,” said Steve Huff, program head.

Local advertising, design, and public relations firm, Access, has two Virginia Western graduates on its design staff. Tony Pearman, CEO/chief creative officer of the firm said what appeals to him about Virginia Western graduates is that they are, “Technically sound, realistically grounded and trained to concept ideas, not just

execute designs. What I have often said is that Virginia Western’s program in two years often

produces superior advertising employee candidates than many other, "more prestigious" programs do in four years for four times the investment.”

Students in Virginia Western’s program won a silver medal in the National ADDY competition, which garners entries from four-year institutions and art schools across the country. Locally, students have won several awards each year in competitions.

“Our program teaches our students to survive in the "real" world of Advertising, Communication Design and Printing,” said Elizabeth Wilmer, Dean of the Humanities Division.

“By exposing them to the rigors of real world deadlines, professional-level standards in design and technical skills, upon graduation from our program our students are ready to enter the work force as a prepared and valuable designer. They know how to meet deadlines. They can control the creative process and understand the technology that drives our industry,” she said.

Virginia Western’s Communication Design Program does not just show you how to do a job; it teaches you how to create a career in the Visual Communication business. It gives you the tools to make a living in a vocation that is fun, rewarding and interesting. “You can actually look forward to going to work after you complete our program,” said Huff.

The cost is also less than half what any other schools charge to get a degree, and remember our students usually get hired over four-year degree graduates who have paid much more to get their education.

“I worked hard in school, and it paid off. I was approached a month before I graduated with a full-time graphic design job offer,” said Melissa Whitley, a former student. “I was nervous at first, but I figured I better jump on it. So, I freelanced with this company until I graduated, and then started full-time a week later,” she said. Whitley now works in the marketing department at Foot Levelers a Roanoke-based company that specializes in custom spinal pelvic stabilizers.

Past Work History and Conference with Donna Abbatello—a letter of gratitude:

I STARTED WORKING in the manufacturing field when I was 18 years old as a sewing machine operator. With only a GED, I felt this was the only

job I was qualified to do, so I stuck with it throughout my life. As companies started outsourcing their products to different countries, I was soon forced to leave one employment for

another until finally almost all apparel manufacturing left the Roanoke Valley.

In 1999, I went to work for Rowe Furniture Company with the hope of securing a safe-harbor from plant closings. I was comforted by the fact that the cost of exporting and importing furniture would be so great that it would prevent outsourcing. Of course, I was soon to be proven wrong. In the late 90's, Rowe began to send the sewing department work all around the world to cut cost; thus began the downsizing of the furniture business. I found myself

signing up for unemployment in March

of 2006 along with 150 other employees

whom like myself had no future job in

sight and nowhere to turn for new job

skills. I filed a petition for the Trades

Act Agreement in hopes of receiving

financial aid from the government to

obtain some type of education that

would enable me to return to the

workforce. The Trades Act was confirmed

in June of 2006 and I began classes at

Virginia Western in August. After being

away from school for some 30 years,

I found myself overwhelmed with

the classes and my self-confidence

had plummeted to zero. It was at this

lowest point in my life when I first met

Mrs. Abbatello outside the classroom

environment to discuss my plans to

leave Western.

As I seldom pass Mrs. Abbatello’s office

upon leaving class, it was sheer luck the

day I found her door open. I had already

decided that this was my last day at

Western—I did not belong here. This was

not the place for me—I was just too old,

too overwhelmed, and too incompetent

to learn new skills. As I lightly tapped

on her door, she looked up from her

work, gave me a warm smile, and said

“Well hello there, come right in.” I only

intended to quickly thank her and say

good-bye; however, she would not hear

of it. As you can by now summarize, I

left her office a different person. With

her wisdom and grace, she restored my

will to persevere and succeed. She gave

me understanding, encouragement,

and all the right reasons to continue my

education. She succeeded in boosting

my low self-confidence by reciting the

phrase “You’re never too old to learn.”

Whenever I see her face or hear her

name, I automatically envision that day

in her office and remember the special

words she said to me, “This is where you

belong.”

I graduated on May 9th with two

certificates, Medical Specialist and

Medical Records Management. I do

not feel this would have been possible

without Mrs. Abbatello and the good

graces of God that lead me to her. Thank-

you both for caring.

DONNA J. ABBATELLOAssistant Professor, Administrative Support Technology, recently retired after thirty years of teaching.

Donna Abbatello was a well-liked and well-

respected professor at Virginia Western. She

served as Administrative Support Technology

(AST) Program Head for three years. Through-

out her career and in addition to teaching in

various schools, she worked as a bookkeeper

and legal secretary. She earned a bachelor’s

degree in Education Comprehensive from Blue-

field State College in West Virginia, and master’s

degree in Supervision of Education from West

Virginia College of Graduate Studies Institute.

Donna was also active in a number of commu-

nity organizations including the International

Association of Administrative Professionals

(IAAP), where she was student chapter lead

adviser for many years. She was responsible for

administering the CAP (Certified Administrative

Professional) and CPS (Certified Professional

Secretary) exams on campus. She received the

“Outstanding Virginia Western Faculty” award

in 2005.

My favorite part about Virginia Western is their honors institute. It is the best place for students because you can go there any time to study and use the computers.

— Ekta Patil, a science major from India who plans to transfer to a four-year college to major in biology

I came to Virginia Western not only because it is close to my house, but also because it is pretty much the same thing as going to Roanoke College or some other school near here. Western is a great school and very well recognized around here. I am learning the same things as if I went to Roanoke College, Virginia Tech or UVa. I’m just paying less.

— Mayra Sanchez, a criminal justice major from Ecuador

Radford Thomas, my art teacher, is my favorite professor. He’s a teacher who makes learning fun and integrates comedy into what he’s teaching. My favorite lesson in his class was on hieroglyphics.

— Austin Casey, a business major at Virginia Western who graduated from Salem High School

Mrs. Marion Grammer (retired spring 2008), my English 101 teacher, was my favorite teacher at Virginia Western. She used her sense of humor as a way to relate to her students throughout her lessons.

— Tessa Edueneh, a nursing major who lives in Botetourt

Dr. Gillette was my Biology 142 professor. He is my favorite teacher because he was always nice and when I asked him a question, he answered all of it in great detail, even when I would ask him twice.

— Sumni Seo, a nursing student from South Korea

Community college education is attractive as major four-year institutions throughout Virginia formulate guaranteed admission agreements, making it easy for students with an associate’s degree to seamlessly transfer into a bachelor’s degree program. Each institution’s agreement varies, and Virginia Western's counseling staff can assist in answering questions about the details.

Virginia Western has numerous guaranteed admission agreements with four-year institutions throughout the state. This adds more value to your Virginia Western education as attending our college saves you money; it’s close to home; it offers numerous options with day, evening, weekend, hybrid and distance learning classes; and with the growing number of articulation agreements, it is becoming easier to transfer to the four-year college of choice.

In addition, if a student chooses to earn an associate’s degree and go directly into the job market, Virginia Western’s career center is there to assist.

We can help you with financial aidFinancial Aid OfficeChapman Hall, Room C106

Receiving financial assistance is an important part of achieving educational goals. The Financial Aid Office offers expertise in completing the FAFSA form and answers general questions on the process. Information on qualifications and eligibility for all types of financial aid can be found on the Virginia Western Financial Aid Office web site: virginiawestern.edu/finaid/

Types of Financial AidThere are three basic types of financial aid – grants and scholarships, work-study, and loans. Each type can assist a student in financing a college education at Virginia Western or any other college or university. Both private and public funds are available. The federal government has both grant and loan programs. The Federal Student Aid web site provides detailed information and acts as a starting point for receiving this aid: http://studentaid.ed.gov

Grants and ScholarshipsGrants are awarded based on financial need and do NOT have to be repaid. Grants are funded by both the state and federal governments. In addition to financial need, students must maintain certain academic criteria, such as fulltime status and good academic standing. Scholarships are also a type of grant aid. A variety of organizations award scholarships and educational gifts, and each has a different set of criteria for application and award. Often, scholarships are based upon academic or personal achievements. Scholarships also do NOT have to be repaid.

LoansA loan is borrowed money that must be repaid, usually with interest. There are several types of federal and private student loans. Detailed information about loans can be found at Virginia Western’s Financial Aid web site: virginiawestern.edu/finaid/studentloans

Applying for Financial AidAny potential full or part-time student who wishes to apply for financial aid (including many scholarships) must submit a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the Federal Student Aid Programs. A FAFSA can be submitted as early as January 1 each year and primary consideration for aid is given to students whose applications are received and processed by May 31. The FAFSA can be submitted directly over the Internet. Most students use this option. However, a paper application can be obtained by calling 1-800-433-3243. To begin an online FAFSA visit the web site: www.fafsa.ed.gov

No-Show PolicyStudents must either attend their face-to-face courses or demonstrate participation in their distance learning courses by the last date to drop for a refund or they will be reported to the Admissions Office and dropped as no-show students. In this case, there will be no refund of tuition in the course, and the student will not be allowed to attend/participate in the class or submit assignments. Failure to attend or participate in a course will adversely impact a student’s financial aid award.

Withdrawal PolicyStudents who violate the attendance or participation guidelines for the course as of the withdrawal deadline will be reported to the Admissions Office and withdrawn with a grade of “W”. Students who stop attending or participating in a course after the withdrawal deadline will receive a grade of “F”. There will be no refund of tuition or reinstatement in the course. Financial aid recipients who receive all “W” or “F” grades in their courses will incur an outstanding tuition debt to the college and be blocked from future enrollment.

RefundsRefunds are processed after the Last Day to Drop for Refunds. Students dropping after the Last Day to Drop and Receive a Refund are not eligible for refunds. See the Withdrawal and No-Show Policy above for more information on refunds.

Financial Aid/Scholarship RecipientsStudents eligible for balance checks should NOT expect them until the second week in October. To prevent delays in receiving balance checks, make sure the mailing address is current.
