CHART ART FAIR

ABOUT CHART

CHART ART FAIR was established in 2013 by Gallery Susanne Ottesen, Galleri

Bo Bjerggard, V1 Gallery, Andersen’s Contemporary and David Risley Gallery,

with the ambition to challenge the boundaries and experience of a traditional art fair.

The ambition was and still is to further develop the impact and role of a Nordic art

event on the international cultural scene.

Running alongside the main fair is CHART SOCIAL, a programme of cultural events

and exhibitions exploring the crossover between art, design, architecture, music,

performance and gastronomy. CHART SOCIAL is free and open to the public.

Key partners and main contributors are ALTAN.DK, FOSS, HAY, Montana, MTAB,

Nordea Private Banking, the Municipality of Copenhagen, A.P. Møller Foundation,

Ny Carlsberg Foundation, Realdania, the Danish Arts Foundation, The Augustinus

Foundation, Dreyers Foundation, Obel Family Foundation and the Nordisk Kulturfond

& Nordisk Ministerråd.

CHART ART FAIR

33 galleries from the Nordic region have been invited to participate in CHART ART

FAIR in 2017, which for the first time includes a film section CHART ART FAIR FILM.

Five galleries are participating for the first time: BERG Contemporary (Iceland), Erik

Nordenhake (Sweden), Gether Contemporary (Denmark), Rod Bianco (Norway) and

Gallery Steinsland Berliner (Sweden).

CHART ART FAIR FILM CHART is pleased to announce the introduction of a film programme as a new

section of CHART ART FAIR 2017. The programme offers a series of scheduled

screenings that will be presented in the new and specially designed cinema in

Kunsthal Charlottenborg. The newly completed cinema presents a unique option to

show works in the excellent conditions of a dedicated screening space.

CHART ART FAIR FILM will extend beyond the dates of the fair and will be screened

as part of Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s programme. The programme will present films

by selected CHART gallery artists including Alex Da Corte (David Risley), Marina

Abramović (Galleri Brandstrup), Maria Friberg (Galleri Andersson/Sandström), NUG

(Gallery Steinsland Berliner), Sigurður Guðjónsson (BERG Contemporary) and Steina

(BERG Contemporary), Tuomas A. Laitinen (Helsinki Contemporary), and Tomás

Saraceno (Andersen’s).

4

Inaugurated in 2016, CHART DESIGN will this year present a curated programme

entitled WHAT IT IS, WHEN IT IS NOT, which will include a series of talks, performative

lectures and public space projects focusing on the ambiguity of design.

VIPs are offered a specially curated tour around the Copenhagen Design District

visiting galleries and design studios that work with a wide range of limited and

collectable design.

WHAT IT IS, WHEN IT IS NOT acts as a prelude to the expansion of CHART DESIGN

in 2018 into an increasingly adventurous fair, exhibition and communication platform

hosted in a unique off-site location. Generously supported by Nordic Culture Point

and Denmark’s National Bank Anniversary Foundation.

LILLIAN TøRLEN

Norwegian ceramicist Lillian Tørlen is interested in how people experience

their immediate surroundings using scupture and installation to invite the viewer

to re-evaluate spaces and materials in form and function. Her site-specific

project Resonance is a sprawling installation comprising hundreds of porcelain

sheets scattered by the wind and caught in cracks of brick walls, lamposts and

balconies activating the route between Kunsthal Charlottenborg and Copenhagen

Contemporary.

GOLDIN+SENNEBY

Swedish performance duo Goldin+Senneby is a framework for collaboration set up

by artists Simon Goldin and Jakob Senneby; exploring juridical, financial and spatial

constructs through notions of the performative and the virtual.

With the magic demonstration ACID MONEY, Goldin+Senneby will engage visitors

in a performative lecture exploring the history of “conspiracy magic” together

with magician Malin Nilsson. The audience is invited to join a trip from cold war

brainwashing techniques to contemporary finance magic. This event offers a special

opportunity to bring some magic with you home.

HANNE G

Danish artist Hanne G’s installation, The Duet, explores the sculptural and aesthetic

potential of textile in a ‘frozen’ form combined with a musical composition created

by repetitive, random patterns. This interactive audiovisual installation engages its

audience directly using built-in sensors to detect movement and activate an audio

element, producing a ‘song’ as people approach, move away from and walk around

the sculptures.

CHART DESIGN

5

CHART SOCIAL

CHART SOCIAL explores the crossovers between art, design, architecture, music,

performance and gastronomy, in a multi-disciplinary non-profit programme, which

runs leading up to, during, and after the fair. Generously supported by the Danish

Arts Foundation and the City of Copenhagen.

SPECIAL ART PROJECTS

LAURE PROUVOST

Turner Prize-winning artist Laure Prouvost has created a new series of works that

can be seen all over Copenhagen in a large-scale project distributed across the city’s

public and private spaces. Prouvost has created twelve new artworks, which will be

installed as 2,000 posters on walls, billboards and residents’ balconies. The works

have already been in place for two weeks preceding CHART ART FAIR to activate

the citizens of Copenhagen. As well as being presented around the city, three of the

posters will also be available to purchase at the HAY pop-up store at CHART and

HAY stores internationally.

EX SITU. SAMPLES OF LIFEFORMS

CHART presents EX SITU. SAMPLES OF LIFEFORMS, in collaboration with

Copenhagen Contemporary and the City of Basel, an international group exhibition

with artists and works addressing the constantly changing conditions of forms of

life on planet Earth. At a time of accelerating transformations in global ecosystems,

humans and other animals leave and lose their natural habitat. The exhibition reflects

the unruly state of migrating species trying to adapt to a new world where nature,

culture and technology are inextricably entangled and enmeshed.

The exhibition includes artists A Kassen, Alan Bogana, Dominique Koch, Hannah

Weinberger, Keith Tyson, Lauren Huret, Lena Maria Thüring, Martin Erik Andersen,

Pedro Wirz, Roni Horn and Tacita Dean.

The exhibition is the result of a cultural partnership between the City of Basel,

CHART, Copenhagen Contemporary and the Swiss Embassy in Denmark. Four

curators - Alice Wilke and Claire Hoffmann (Basel), Jannie Haagemann and Toke

Lykkeberg (Copenhagen) - have created this exhibition in collaboration, which

primarily features newly produced works by highly accomplished and upcoming

artists from Swiss and Nordic contexts.

6

CHART ART FAIR X HAY

HAY and CHART ART FAIR have joined forces to launch a new series of artists

posters. The series is curated by CHART and includes works by contemporary artists

participating at CHART. Together, HAY and CHART hope to make art available to

a wider public. The works will then be produced as a poster and will be available

to purchase during CHART in the foyer of Kunsthal Charlottenborg in the HAY

CHART POSTER SHOP. Following CHART, the posters will be sold in HAY stores

internationally. The artists include Laure Prouvost; Anna Reivilä (Gallery Taik

Persons); Geoff McFetridge (V1 Gallery); Malin Gabriella Nordin (Gallery Steinsland

Berliner); John Kørner (Galleri Bo Bjerggaard); Richard Colman (V1 Gallery) and Anna

Bjerger (David Risley Gallery).

CHART X KGL. TEATER: CORPUS For the next three years, CHART and KGL. Teater (the Royal Danish Theatre) will

jointly develop an annual project, exploring the artistic possibilities across the

fields of performing and visual arts. Each performance will challenge the audience’s

traditional expectations of the physical and visual experience of each genre and test

new forms of collaboration and artistic innovation.

This collaboration will launch in 2017 with Fall, a piece directed by choreographer

Martin Forsberg and artist Christian Falsnaes, conceived to be performed by an

audience together with KGL. Teater dance company Corpus. Fall reflects in its

structure the collaborative character of the commission, insofar it makes a random

audience join forces with a group of six professional dancers in order to create

together an art work. Falsnaes will lead the audience through a choreography

developed in collaboration with Forsberg, centered around the act and quality of

falling.

MARTIN CREED X MADS NØRGAARD

British Turner-prize winning artist Martin Creed exhibits a selection of his works in an

iconic fashion store Mads Nørgaard. Challenging the traditional shopping experience,

shoppers and passers-by are invited into his humorous universe of sculpture, sound

and installation.

LORENZO SENNI

Italian musician and producer Lorenzo Senni finds all the thematic material he needs

in one of electronic music’s most maligned genres - trance. Through his musical

experiments Senni presents a fresh insight into his take on 90’s hard trance and its

links to electronic dance music and contemporary dancehall. At CHART 2017 Senni

will perform intense ten minute raves in secret locations within Charlottenborg Palace,

in which everyone is invited to participate.

CHART EMERGING

CHART EMERGING aims to give a platform and voice to a young and upcoming

generation of Nordic artists. This year’s edition, entitled I Am Our Common Prounoun,

is curated by Helga Christoffersen. It is the first public component of a three-year

long research project on emerging artists in the Nordic countries, initiated by

Christoffersen as a response to CHART’s invitation to organise CHART EMERGING

2017. “Emerging,” in this project, refers to artists, who, having completed the formal

educational phase of their development, have recently put forth a distinct position

within the larger artistic landscape; . “Emerging” therefore does not refer to an age

as much as a budding moment of artistic development.

I Am Our Common Prounoun came together through extensive research and travel

in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. It aims to amplify thematic

resonances, which emerged between the work of this group of artists. The exhibition,

therefore, is not a regional survey, rather, it points to a specific set of concerns. A

larger survey of emerging artists in the Nordic countries, which also extends from

this research, will follow in book format and as an online resource, forming the next

phases of this project.

Generously supported by Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond, A.P Moller

Foundation, The Augustinus Foundation, The Nordic Council of Ministers, Nordisk

Kulturfond, Obelske Familiefond, Office for Contemporary Art Norway and Statens

Kunstfond.

CHART ARCHITECTURE

Each year students from leading Nordic architecture schools are invited to enter

the CHART ARCHITECTURE competition, this year under the theme THE LIVING CITY.

Five finalists have been selected to design and build individual pavilions to house

the fair’s restaurants and cultural partners Absolut, Gorilla, Musling Bistro, The Union

Kitchen and SPACE10 in Kunsthal Charlottenborg’s courtyard. The winning pavilion

will be announced during the fair. Following the competition, open-source plans for

the chosen pavilion will be released in collaboration with SPACE10 after CHART.

CHART ARCHITECTURE is made possible by the generous support of Realdania,

a social enterprise, whose mission is to improve the quality of life through the built

environment; The City of Copenhagen, FOSS and The Dreyer Foundation.
