Solution  Brief:  Violin  FSP  Proven  Storage  on  VMware  Horizon  Virtual  Desktops

Violin  Memory,  Inc.    |    4555  Great  America  Parkway,  Santa  Clara,  CA  95054  USA    |    Tel:  1-‐650-‐396-‐1500  •  Fax:  1-‐650-‐396-‐1543    |    www.violin-‐memory.com  ©2015  Violin  Memory,  Inc.  All  rights  reserved.  These  products  and  technologies  are  protected  by  U.S.  and  international  copyright  and  intellectual  property  laws.  Violin  Memory  is  a  registered  trademark  of  Violin  Memory,  Inc.  in  the  United  States  and/or  other  jurisdictions

VDI  Economics  VDI  economics  hang  on  two  elements:  cost  of  storage  and  the  cost  of  management.    The  cost  of  storage  from  Violin  is  comprised  of  the  effective  storage  capacity  after  data  reduction  features  such  as  deduplication  and  compression.      Industry  experts  estimate  that  data  reduction  for  VDI  should  yield  a  3-‐5:1  savings,  or  effective  storage  capacity.  In  addition,  because  Violin  does  not  use  expensive  SSDs  in  our  designs,  we  can  pass  the  cost  savings  on  to  our  customers.    The  combination  of  the  two  means  your  VDI  budget  goes  farther  with  Violin.

Easy  to  Manage  Another  key  element  for  VDI  success  is  management.    In  today’s  world,  you  need  to  provide  a  storage  solution  that  can  do  more  than  one  thing.    VDI  is  just  part  of  today’s  data  center  workload.    Other  applications  would  include  databases,  transaction  apps,  email,  payroll,  etc.    These  applications  may  have  different  needs.    Violin’s  GUI  means  you  don’t  need  a  lot  of  different  GUIS  to  manage  your  environment.    It  also  means  if  you  want  to  more  carefully  tailor  the  environment  to  the  workload,  Violin  provides  you  the  tools  in  a  single  pane  of  glass  through  our  Symphony  management.

Once  you  establish  your  VDI  characteristics,  you  can  easily  replicate  the  LUN  to  as  many  VDI  users  as  you  like  for  hyper-‐efficient  provisioning.    You  can  create  tiers  of  characteristics  of  the  different  classes  of  user.    This  means  scaling  to  enterprise  scope  for  VDI  is  no  longer  a  heavy  IT  lift,  it  has  been  reduced  to  a  low-‐effort  task.

VDI  Performance  VDI  is  recognized  as  a  performance  demanding  application  subject  to  large  IOPS  swings  at  boot  time  and  heavy  write  activity  demanding  consistent  performance  that  Violin  can  provide.    Traditional  VDI  based  on  spinning  disk  drives  commonly  suffers  from  insufficient  performance.    Because  many  users  share  a  pool  of  virtual  machines  in  the  VDI  application,  applications  that  may  have  looked  sequential,  now  appear  random.    Hard  disk  drive’s  traditional  strength  of  sequential  performance  is  a  mismatch  for  VDI.    SSD-‐based  arrays  have  latency  spikes  when  performing  maintenance  that  Violin’s  Flash  Fabric  Architecture  avoids.    The  Violin  Flash  Storage  Platform  has  been  designed  from  the  ground  up  for  consistent  high  performance  and  is  the  best  storage  options  for  your  VMware  Horizon  implementations.
