November saw a sharp increase in the
number of Palestinian children killed
and injured as result of the conflict. Prior
to the escalation of violence between
Gaza and Israel on 14 November, three
children were killed, including one 12-
year-old boywho was playing football.
Violence escalated following theassassination of a leading member of
Hamas in an Israeli airstrike. According
to the UN, between 14 and 21
November, 158 Palestinians and 6
Israelis were killed. DCI can confirm that
33 Palestinian children were killedas a
result of Israeli military activity. Two
additional children were killed by
Palestinian rockets falling short, and one
child was killed whilst participating in
hostilities.
Since January 2000, 1,395 Palestinian
children have been killed by Israeli
military activity. This works out at
approximately two children ev
week for the past 13 years.
On 29 November, two children w
shot at and detained whilst fishing
Gaza, in a possible breach of
ceasefire agreement. This is the
such case documented by DCI sin
January 2011. In 71% of cases, boats were within the fishing li

On 15 November 2012, nine-month old Hanin is killed in an Israeli airstrike
Gaza as she sleeps in her parents bedroom.
Nine-month old Hanin lived in a small
house surrounded by olive trees in
Gaza. Hanins father, Khaled, recalls
hearing the news on 14 November
that a Hamas leader had been
assassinated in an Israeli airstrike.
Khaled recalls that Palestinian fighters
soon retaliated by launching rockets.
The following day at around 11:30 am I
left the house to stock up on food and
supplies because we were frightened
that another war might start, says Khaled. I returned about 30 m inutes la
with some food and sweets for my daughter. Hanin is my only child and I w
very excited to have a daughter. When I arrived home my wife, Huda, t
the shopping bags from me and I asked her if I could wake-up Hanin so
could play.
I approached the door to our bedroom with my wife behind me, rec
Khaled. As I opened the door and looked at Hanin, who was still sleeping
huge explosion rocked the entire house. It was so powerful it nearly knock
me over and everything started collapsing about me. Dirt and smoke filled
room. I could not see anything, but I rushed into the room where Hanin h
been sleeping. I picked her up and carried her out of the room. As I lifted he
could feel something warm on my hands. It was Hanins blood. I looked do
and saw that her head was bleeding.
Khaled ran outside carrying his baby daughter and screamed for
ambulance. Hanin was still breathing, but her breaths were rapid. Kha
managed to stop an ambulance in the street and he climbed in with Ha
The paramedics tried to stop the blood that was coming from her forehea
recalls Khaled. I was crying because she was my only child. The ambulan
arrived at the hospital five minutes later. Another ambulance soon arriv
bringing Khaleds wife, whose right shoulder was bleeding. Meanwhile Ha
was taken into an operating room.
At 1:30 p.m. a doctor came out of the operating room and told Khaled that
daughter was dead. I felt the room spinning, says Khaled. She is my o
child. She was my life. I loved her very much. About 10 minutes later I saw o
of my relatives carrying Hanins body down to the morgue. I followed him b
could not look at Hanin. I then went back upstairs to tell my wife that our ch
was dead. Huda had already been told and we both started crying.
I went home at around 4:00 p.m.. The roof and walls had collapsed. I ente
the bedroom where Hanin had been sleeping and saw blood on the w
above her mattress. We buried Hanin the following morning. My wife alw
cries now. I cannot find any words to comfort her. Our only daughter has be
killed and our house is destroyed. Hanins blood is still on the wall and her t
on the mattress. I cannot move them.

Eight days in Gaza
On 14 November 2012, violence erupted between Palestinians a
Israelis following the assassination of a Hamas leader in an airstri
According to theUN, during the following eight days of violence,
Palestinians and six Israelis were killed. DCI has confirmed that
children were killed in Israeli attacks on the Territory during the eig
days. Also during the same period, around 1,200 Palestinians w
injuredand 219 Israelis.

In one case documented by DCI, a family of nine was watch
television when their house was destroyed in an airstrike. The atta
killed the father, two-year-old Suhaib and four-year-old Mohamma
Eighteen-year-old Noor, who was left with a fractured back, rec
how she saw a sudden flash of light before waking up in hosp
surrounded by her blood-soaked siblings. Noor cannot explain w
their house was targeted as her family has no political affiliations
connections with armed groups. I was so sad losing my father. He h
bought the house about seven months ago and he wont be able
enjoy it. I was so sad losing my little brothers, Suhaib and Mohammtoo. I had another brother who was killed in 2008. He was also call
Mohammad. This is the second Mohammad we have lost to the Isra
military.
DCI also documented two cases in which children were killed in Ga
when rockets fired by Palestinian fighters fell short, and another case
which a child was killed whilst engaged in hostilities. This gives a tota
36 children killed, making up 23 percent of all fatalities.
It should be noted that children were not immune from violence pto the start of Israels latest offensive in Gaza on 14 Novemb
According to data collected by DCI, in the weeks immediat
preceding the latest violence, three children were killedand a furt
six children were injured in Israeli land, air and drone attacks on t
territory. Between January 2000 and 19 November 2012, DCI h
documented the deaths of 1,395 children killed as a result of Isra
military activity in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This works out
approximately two children every week for the past 13 years.
