A word or two about the Vintage… Is 2016 classic or not? – Is 2015 better? – Will 2016 even outlast 2011? – Could 2015/2016 be compared with 1966/1967 or 1991/1992? All these questions and only one answer: 2016 is 2016! – Nothing more, nothing less. It is a great Vintage with fantastic Vintage Port qualities, strong and firm tannins, great fruit and fantastic acidity and there is one thing I can guarantee: only very few participants today will still be alive when these Vintage Ports are leaving their drinking window… But in fact the World of Port will become even more complicated. In the past there was one focal year with little neighbouring Vintage Ports around. 2016 is succeeding the fantastic Vintage Ports from 2015 and the producers already have two more high quality years in the vats. We will have at least four fantastic consecutive years, which did never happen in the history of Port. Let’s see how this continues. WEATHER IS CRUCIAL: As in all excellent years the underground water reservoirs needed to be replenished in wintertime to prepare the vines in the Douro-valley for the “three months of hell” to come. Unusually much rain fell in winter 2015 and these very wet months led to several spring floods where even the boat traffic on the Douro had to stop for several days. April and May were wet and cool and provided some heavy challenges for the viticulturalists. June and July brought a return of the more regular weather, but August was unusually hot and this slowed down maturation even further. Then little but much needed rain fell end of August. The first week of September was incredibly hot, but this slowed down to the “normal 35 deg.” after September 7th. Overall result were roughly 25% less grapes than usual (with the Douro regularly being on an average of 25hl/ha (Bordeaux 50hl/ha and Champagne 100hl/ha)). For the winemakers the harvest was everything but easy as the different grape varieties (more than 100 in the Douro valley!) ripened much more variable than usual. With labour being scarce and more expensive, this resulted in overall much higher “production costs” than in years before. With this information, please enjoy a wonderful Vintage from the Douro Valley and cherish every glass as only few things in the Vintage Port production process are not done by hand.
