Be Aware. Be DiligentThis is a friendly reminder to please be aware of your surroundings and contact the authorities should you witness any suspicious activities in the community.

Locking your car and setting your alarm is just part of the solution to prevent a burglary to your auto. Even if locked and alarmed, if you leave valuables (or a hint of valuables) in plain sight, a thief may tar-

get your car, even knowing that it’s locked and alarmed. However, without a clear prize in sight, a locked/alarmed car will likely be bypassed for an easier “target of opportunity.”

To prevent and reduce the threat of falling victim to this crime, here are a few tips:

Don't leave valuables in your car: That sounds like “common sense,” but drivers

The Board of Directors is sponsoring two CPR/First Aid classes for residents 13 years of age and up. Each class is limited to 20 participants and is 2 hours long. Depending on interest by residents, we have the option to offer more classes later in the year.

The first class was held on July 28, 2018 but the second class will be August 18, 2018 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Vineyard pavilion.

Registration is based on first come, first served. Please contact me at [email protected] or call/text 210-573-8923 or on our FB page if you are interested in taking part in one of these classes. I will need the name, age and contact information for each participant. Each participant that meets the CPR/First Aid requirements of the American Heart Association will be emailed a certification that is good for 2 years.

If you need further information, contact me. Lanie Shearer Vineyard HOA Board of Directors

or passengers leave items of value in plain view every day. If you leave valuable items visible in your car, your car is automatically a target. If you have to leave packages or shopping bags in your car unattended, lock them in the trunk out of sight. This includes leaving “loose change” in the console or cup holder. It is always recommended to place items in the trunk of the car

Leave no trace: Don’t leave any “sign” that there might be valu-ables “out of sight” in your vehicle, such as docking stations or connector cables. Leave nothing in plain view that might make your vehicle worth getting into by a thief; especially coins or phone chargers. Additionally, remove your garage door opener from plain view. Depending on how it is programmed, it could be used to open your garage, attached residence or building.

Lock all vehicle doors: Every year, we have items stolen from unlocked vehicles where the owner was only going to be gone “just for a second.” It only takes seconds to steal your belongings!

Set any alarm or anti-theft device: If you have one, use it! Many people believe that car alarms no longer make a difference, but they can be an effective deterrent to an auto-burglar, who most often chooses the easiest target.

Park your vehicle in the driveway or garage: Thieves are less likely to steal items, and especially tires and rims, from a vehicle if parked in a driveway.

What to do if your car is burglarized: As soon as you notice something has been stolen or that your car has been broken into, do not touch/adjust anything in, on or around the car. As soon as possible, call the police to report it and let the respond-ing officer determine if evidence is present.

Parking Enforcement ReminderIf you need a parking permit for overnight guests, please call Spectrum at 210-494-0659 or email contact@spectrumam.

In recent years, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events, including floods. A heat wave is a prolonged period of excessive heat, generally 10 degrees or more above average, often combined with excessive humidity. Below is a list of ways to stay safe during a heat wave:

• Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio for critical updates from the National Weather Service (NWS).

• NEVER leave children or pets alone in enclosed vehicles.

• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.

• Eat small meals and eat more often.

• Avoid extreme temperature changes.

• Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Avoid dark colors because they absorb the sun’s rays.

• Slow down, stay indoors and avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day.

• Postpone outdoor games and activities.

• Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat.

• Take frequent breaks if you must work outdoors.

• Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

• Check on your animals frequently to ensure that they are not suffering from the heat.

Registration Now Open for National Night 2018By Jeff Schopp, Staff Writer

National Night Out is a nation-wide event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW). Registration is free and is now open. National Night Out will take place Tuesday, October 2nd, 2018. Most events start around 6:00 PM Tuesday evening and are scheduled to last until 10:00 PM.

Registration is required if your community is planning on hosting its own events or activities. From gatherings to block-parties to snacks and visits by police officers, neighbors are encouraged to come outside and meet one another and learn about happenings in their neighborhood. This is a great opportunity to exchange information that can heighten crime and drug prevention awareness while letting criminals know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign, promotes partnerships between citizens and police and encourages the creation and participation in neighborhood

watch groups. Police Departments in the state of Texas supports and participate in this event by sending police officers to neighborhood events held throughout the city.

On-line registration is now open at https://natw.org/registration. All registered events will be able to use the National Night Out logo on promotional flyers and early registration is encouraged. All information will be sent to those who have registered as it is released. Get registered today and give yourself plenty of time to plan a successful event!
