“izandla ziyagezana /hands wash each other”We take this age-old wisdom to heart in a business so interdependent on people. It underlines much of the Vineyard Hotel & Spa Corporate Social Investment approach.

We believe that the smallest contribution has the power to effect change…

from the development of a talented kitchen worker to a sous chef supreme, the health and fitness project initiated by waist-watching staff members, the support of a job creation project that makes crafts sold in the Hotel, the rands from a hotel guest that help fund our community projects or the efforts of staff to see more of a city’s homeless with food and shelter this winter...

…every little bit counts.

A small sample of our Corporate Social Investment projects and initiatives is included here. For more detailed information, visit our website www.vineyard.co.za

introductionThe Vineyard Hotel & Spa, supports amongst other charities and projects the Our Kids of the Cape Fund (KOTC). KOTC, was established by the Petousis group in 2007, with the aim of assisting local children’s community programmes.

Guests staying at the Hotel are asked to contribute a small donation, per room per night, which is billed to their accounts. The hotel matches the contribution Rand for Rand. Our guests are under no obligation to pay the amount and they may request to have it adjusted from their hotel account at reception.

A committee of staff from the supported Hotels run the committee and distribute funds. They meet monthly to evaluate progress of projects and authorize funding to new ones. The KOTC Committee also arrange various social involvement projects for staff, and draw on the resources of the hotels to assist with sponsorships and donations in kind. Between August 2011 and July 2012, R 260 332.00 was collected by the KOTC. In 2011/12, R351 700.00 was donated or spent on CSI initiatives.

To grow our initiative we have successfully become a beneficiary of My School My Village My Planet.

And included an SMS donation facility: Simply SMS ‘KOTC’ to 38021 / each SMS costs R10*

*Please note: a percentage of the R10.00 donated will go to network operator and administration fees.

golf day 2011In November 2011, the KOTC held its first charity Golf Day. The day was a huge success, supported by the likes of Chester Williams, Mat Pierce, Ryan O’Connor and FW De Klerk with R141 000.00 being raised for KOTC.

What did we do with the golf day money?Funds Woodside HoistIn support of our quest to “help the children who can’t help themselves”, KOTC has decided to use a portion of the funds raised at our charity Golf Day to install a second electronic bath hoist at Woodside Special Care Centre - a home for profoundly intellectually disabled children and young adults.

With a hoist in each bathroom, the carers will be provided with much-needed relief as they carry out the children’s daily bath routine. It works firstly, by lifting and lowering each child safely and securely into the bath and secondly, by supporting them, once in the bath, so that the carer’s hands are free to give them a nice clean wash.

Beware students at workThe in-house trainee’s of the Vineyard Hotel are hard at work preparing a fundraiser this year in support of KOTC, the idea behind this is for the 3rd years to plan and co-ordinate a CSI activity as part of their social responsibility. They have put together a garden Walk and High Tea to be held in September 2012, with various items being raffled and auctioned off for a good cause.

Operation Shoebox- October 2011We rallied the staff together and signed up for the operation shoebox project, where we signed up to ‘adopt’ a child (or two) and make up a shoebox filled with Christmas goodies for them. We were supplied with the child’s name and surname, age, gender, clothing and shoe size, and where possible a little snippet of information on their hobbies and interests. So we were able to personalise the contents of the shoebox.

YATW Amazing RaceIs a group of employees who volunteer to be part of an employee wellness team called “You are the World”. This year, the team focused on “re-introducing yourself to joy” introducing fun activities monthly, the staff were encouraged to give back through the following YATW activities:

The Vineyard Hotel hosted 4 learners from Sinethemba Senior Secondary School in Philippi. This provides a great opportunity for the learners to get exposed to the hospitality industry.

Clothes Donation for children Throughout the year, members of staff are encouraged to generously donate unused items of clothing and clothes that their children have outgrown. These items have been donated to The Carpenters Workshop in Town, Anthea Pieters Safe House, Home of Hope and Bumphumelele.

Jump OnAn employee campaign aimed at supporting various social and environmental initiatives that will benefit the community. projects that are currently running:

Over 3kg’s of bread tags have been collected thus far and we look forward to collecting even more. These bread tags will go towards the purchase of a wheelchair.

Our Stores Department have been collecting books since the start of the ‘Jump On’ Project & with help from their colleagues they have donated the books to a much appreciative old age home on Friday the 27 January 2012.

The impact on the elderly who received the books is unquantifiable as these books will be read, swopped and treasured by all in the home.

The Conferencing & Events Department donated the stationary they had collected from guests and staff to various needy schools around Cape Town and this has been heart-warming.

They have also created awareness by making their project known to the businesses hosting conferences at Vineyard Hotel and thus increasing their collections. Many of the businesses e.g. pharmaceuticals donated Hula-hoops, toys, stationery, books etc. Banqueting also worked with various departments from Vineyard i.e. Stores by using old and unwanted Styrofoam containers to distribute goodies & food to the needy children.

chef cameron – an inspiring story of investing in raw talent…In 2011, the Hotel participated in the School @ the Centre of Community societal change process.

“Many of the social challenges we face in SA are directly related to the breakdown of community. Through placing the school at the centre, we intend to strengthen the fabric of the South African society. Experienced business and community leaders will partner with principals to enrol communities around the schools to get actively and enthusiastically engaged in the challenges of that school and to ‘walk together’ (as a community) to deal with these challenges.”http://www.symphonia.net/school.htm

It was as a result of this project, that we were introduced to Fairmount High School and, specifically, one bright-eyed aspiring Chef – Cameron Jacobs. Read Cameron’s story in the articles below…

“Thanks very much for your email with the photo of Cameron. Yes, he does look good! I am glad that he is happy and fitting in. His grandfather came to see me just before the school closed, to thank us for assisting Cameron. He was very tearful, and while he was talking, I was thinking that I should have video-taped what he had to say. He was so very grateful for what you have done for his grandchild. Maybe we should set up a meeting with him and yourself, so that you can hear first-hand what he had to say? Thanks once again for all that you are doing for our school. We are definitely experiencing the positive changes that are happening.”Principal Terence Klassen – Fairmount High School

hospitality talent search- presently under construction

Inspired by the “Cameron” story and the possibilities that exist with high school partnerships in attracting, particularly, black talent, this project aims to inform high school learners of the hospitality industry and acquiring (black) learners into the industry through industry presentations and learner shadows at the hotels. This project is the brainchild of Talana Brown – Development & CSI Intern June 2011 till August 2012.

job shadows

We run a three-day work shadow programme for Grade 11 pupils. This programme gives the learners exposure to the various departments of the hotel. We offer a learner interested in Hotel Management an opportunity to shadow in Housekeeping; Front Office, restaurant, Banqueting and kitchen and chef shadow program solely in the kitchen.

39 students participated in the programme in 2011/2012 thus far.

Two of our shadow students had the following to say about their experience:

“I would like to thank you guys for giving me an opportunity to come do shadowing at your lovely hotel I really did enjoy the weekend working with the helpful kitchen staff, know it was a busy night for your kitchen staff cause they had a wedding on that Saturday evening but I was able to be assisted and given an opportunity to work hand in hand with your banqueting chefs and sous chef, plating all three courses for the function was a lovely opportunity for me to really be part of successive night. Thank you again!” - Luzuko Mpulu
