Vineyard City has elected officials and staff who work hard each day to assure that the City is running and developing smoothly and that your needs as a resident are being met. However, local government can sometimes be a bit of a mystery to those who aren’t involved in it daily. So we’ve created GOV101 to demystify it a bit. Every month, you can come here to find out more about what your local government does everyday to make Vineyard great!

HOME IMPROVEMENT PROJECTSIt is that time of year again when the weather is getting nice and you may be thinking about all of the home improvement projects that you would like to get done this year. Whether it is finishing your basement, installing a pergola, putting up a shed, adding concrete to your yard or whatever ambitious project you have in mind, please make sure to contact your friendly building department to discuss your plans.

Although not all projects require a building permit, there are many other

considerations that you should be aware of while planning your project. Some of these considerations include; setbacks from property lines or adjacent structures, utility easements, fire separation requirements and so on. We are happy to help assist you through the process from determining if your project requires a building permit through to passing your final inspection. You can reach out to your local building department by calling (801) 226-1929 or emailing us at [email protected]. If you missed it, you can also view the Building Department on March’s episode of Vineyard Live where we discuss home imrovement projects and what you need to know as you plan yours!

Apply for a building permit here: https://www.vineyardutah.org/336/Apply-for-a-Building-Permit

In addition, May is Building Safety Month! Watch for fun activities and social media posts coming in May to help make sure your home is as safe as it should be.

A NEW SIGN ON LAKEVIEW DRIVE IN SLEEPY RIDGEComing shortly, a new historical street sign will be added to the signpost at the entrance of Lakeview Drive in Sleepy Ridge to honor one of the founding fathers of Vineyard, Walter R. Holdaway. The sign will simply say “Walter’s Way”, but the simplicity of the sign should in no way detract from the totally dedicated, service-oriented life lived by Walter Holdaway nor minimize the countless contributions Walter made to what would become Vineyard, Utah County and the State of Utah.

Walter and his wife Edna raised their family on a successful dairy farm on the land surrounding what is now the neighborhood served by Lakeview Drive. Walter was known as a man of unquestionable integrity, industry and innovation, never backing down from a daunting challenge. He loved engaging others in coming up with solutions to problems and continually improving conditions existing at the time. Because of his outstanding leadership qualities and his desire to serve others he was regularly invited, appointed and/or elected to a wide variety of leadership roles in the neighboring communities, County and State, including the Utah State Dairy Council, the SCERA Board, Utah Valley Hospital Board and the Utah County Planning Board. Due to his deep religious convictions and daily living practices, he served as Bishop of the Vineyard Ward, a counselor in the Sharon Stake Presidency and as the first Stake President of the newly formed Orem Stake.

To never forget Walter and his countless contributions to this specific area of Vineyard and to honor a commitment made to the Walter Holdaway family by developers, the Vineyard Heritage Commission, together with the City of Vineyard, are pleased to place this historical sign to remember the legacy of one ordinary man who made extraordinary contributions to his family, neighbors, community and to his God, that ultimately benefit all who now live in this community.

OPEN BURNPERMIT

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE

EARTH DAY

There will be two 30-yard containers available to all residents of Vineyard between April 27 - May 6. One will be located at Grove Park and the other at Gammon Park. Hazardous waste materials will not be accepted. Additional unaccepted items include paint, chemicals, e-waste (TV’s, microwaves, etc.), tires, fridges, and rocks/dirt. Additional information and updates can be found on our Facebook event page.

Burning is permitted during the window from 3/30 – 5/30 every year These are the steps that residents need to follow:

1. Appy for a Burn Permit online at: https://air.utah.gov/OpenBurning/form/index.php. For residents who do not have access to the internet, they may call 801-526-4000. The applicant will be issued a Burn Permit #.

2. Then, on the day they are planning to burn, they need to call Orem Dispatch at 801-229-7070 to inform the local Fire Department of the burn. (Failure to do so is a Class B Misdemeanor.)

Additional information may be found here: https://ffsl.utah.gov/fire/burn-permits-and-fire-code/

Utah County Health Departments Household Hazardous Waste event is back during the month of April. There will be no in-person event. OUR HERITAGE50-20’S SCOUT ACTIVITYAbout 100 rears ago, Boy Scout troops in Vineyard were frequently given the 50-20 challenge, which consisted of traveling 50 miles in 20 hours or less. The most common route was from the This Is The Place monument in Salt Lake City to Pioneer Park on Center Street in Provo. Dan Gammon held the fastest time for completion of the route: nine hours and 23 minutes.

In Vineyard, selling door-to-door requires a license. Licensed solicitors will have an ID badge issued by the city which must be worn prominently while soliciting. To report a violation, call the Utah County non-emergency dispatch number at 801-794-3970.

The city of Vineyard, Utah will hold a General Municipal Election on November 2, 2021 for the following offices:• Mayor – 4-year term• 2 City Council Seats – 4-year term

Those elected to fill the open positions will be sworn in and take office on January 3, 2022.

This election will be conducted by mail using a ranked choice voting ballot. The candidate declaration period will run from August 10 through August 17, 2021 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, excluding Saturday and Sunday.

ELECTION NOTICE

You may see a change in the sewer charges on your utility bill. Sewer charges are based on the amount of water you use in your house and during the summer, not all the water you use goes into the sewer system because most of it goes to watering your lawn. So to make sure we are only charging you for in-house water use we calculate the average of your water usage from November to February. We then use that average as your new sewer usage rate for the next year. You can expect to see this change on the bill you receive in April.

Unused opioids—such as hydrocodone, morphine, and oxycodone—are dangerous to have in your home when they are no longer needed. Children or pets can accidentally take unused opioids or visitors might search for them in your drawers and medicine cabinets. Remove the risk of your unused opioids and help address the devastating opioid crisis affecting so many American families. Proper disposal of unused prescription opioids can save lives. Vineyard City has installed a NarcX opioid disposal unit in the city building for all residents to dispose of their unused opioids and other medications safely.
