ith the Affordable Care Act in place, a number of our patients have
had the good fortune of obtaining health insurance. These patients had household incomes under 200 percent of the poverty level, which is $23,340 for a single person, or $47,700 for a family of four.
Federal tax credits made health insurance affordable for many, al-though there remain challenges in meeting annual deductibles and paying for medications.
However, for 1 million Floridians, health care remains completely out of reach because they fall into a coverage gap. Florida did not expand Medicaid, so adults who earn less than $11,490 a year don’t qualify for tax credits.
And if they are not pregnant, dis-abled or caring for minor children, they generally don’t qualify for Medicaid, either.
Even with the ACA in place, the need for VIM Clinic will continue for the foreseeable future. How-ever, we are now able to focus our attention on a group of residents who are in great need, but remain
largely invisible — the homeless.
Some of our patients live in dire, dangerous circumstances and des-perately want to get off the streets. But health is only one of many ob-stacles they face. So we are coor-dinating with various agencies to meet basic needs on the path to re-integration — health, food, shelter, clothing and transportation.
In addition to a mental health specialist, we’ve added a social worker to our staff, thanks to grant funding. Our opportunity and our challenge is to make a difference among our most vulnerable resi-dents — those who’ve lost their jobs, their homes, their health and their hope.
And we thank you for helping us.

A GIFT TO OUR COMMUNITYFor every dollar donated,
we provide nearly $12 worth of medical services to our patients.
VIM CLINIC OPERATIONSVIM Clinic operates with over 90 volunteers and a small paid staff. When specialist care is needed, phy-sicians in the community freely give of their time and skills to help VIM Clinic patients. Martin Health System provides lab, diagnostic and ancil-lary services — a contribution of over $2 million per year. Medications are provided by local physicians and pharmaceutical companies.
VIM CLINIC PATIENTSVIM Clinic patients are adult, Martin County residents, with legal status, who are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare, do not have private health insurance and are below the 200 percent poverty level, as determined using cur-rent federal definitions based on in-come and family size.
VIM CLINIC VOLUNTEERSOur modest staff is supplemented by a dedicated family of over 90 volunteers who donate their time and expertise. Our volunteers include phy-sicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, medical assistants and lay personnel.
VIM CLINIC SERVICESIn addition to general medicine, some of the specialties at VIM Clinic in-clude: allergy, neurology, dermatol-ogy, gastroenterology, gynecology, ophthalmology, optometry, orthope-dic, otolaryngology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, podiatry, psychiatry, clinical psychology, internal medicine and urology.
VIM CLINIC PARTNERSMartin Health System, Martin Coun-ty Medical Society, Martin County Health Department, The Friends of Volunteers in Medicine Clinic and the generous support of community members.
VIM Clinic provides comprehensive, com-passionate medical care at no charge to eligible, uninsured adult residents of Mar-tin County.
Dr. Howard E. VossMedical Director
After 53 years of practicing med-icine, it has become apparent that volunteering at VIM Clinic is what my life’s work was ultimately sup-posed to be.
This clinic is an extraordinary gift to the community, made possible by supporters like you.
We have so many people in Mar-tin County with diseases that could be easily treated, but are not be-cause of the lack of access to medi-cal care. This disparity undermines the health of the entire community.
Common diseases such as diabe-tes, hypertension and high choles-terol are clearly curable. But if ne-glected, they result in more costly treatments, or fatal outcomes.
None of that has to happen in Martin County. Here, it’s re-markable what we can do for patients who live in poverty and lack medical insurance.
A recent case in point involves a young man who came to us with a brain tumor. We don’t often see such extraordinary cases, but it’s gratifying to know that when we do, we have in-credable partnerships and can mobilize to provide su-perb, comprehensive care.
That’s the gift this clinic gives to this community. That’s the gift you help us give.
In medical school, I was taught that every patient
deserved to be treated to the very best of my ability, with dignity and respect, no matter what their eco-nomic circumstances.
That is what we do at VIM Clin-ic. Our value goes beyond taking care of immediate medical needs. We also offer hope for the future.
My young patient is only 20 years old. Already, he has a new lease on life, and a whole new ap-preciation for the value and power of a community working together.
His name is Evan Rosato. You can read about him on page 5. He is a remarkable young man. With your help, we saved his life and a bright prospect for our future.
And that should give us all enor-mous satisfaction.

VIM CLINIC HEROES
lice Mackey has been a VIM Clinic volunteer since 1998, but this year was particu-larly notable for the fact she
turned 90 — and still comes in four
days a week. Alice helps potential pa-tients compile the documentation they need to show they meet eligibility re-quirements for VIM’s services. Alice is an expert in the eligibility and
screening process, having logged nearly 20,000 hours over a period of 16 years as a volunteer at VIM Clinic! In 2009, she was among several VIM
volunteers who received the President’s Award for lifetime achievement in vol-unteerism. When asked why she hasn’t retired
long before now, Alice just laughs and shrugs off the question. Basically, she says, she wouldn’t know what to do with herself staying at home all day.“If I’m home for few days, I end up
climbing the walls,” she says. “I volun-teer here, because it keeps me active
AVolunteer Alice Mackey celebrated her 90th
birthday and 16th year at VIM.
Alice at the 2006 VIM Gala
ALICE MACKEY, Volunteerand engaged. It gives me something meaningful to do.”In addition
to her gener-ous donation of time, Al-ice has, for many years, been a major sponsor for VIM’s fundraising galas. There are three large plaques with six
levels of donors on display at the Clinic. The second-highest level listed is that of “Founder.” One of the names inscribed on that list is Alice Mackey. “Without VIM Clinic, a lot of people
would be in a lot of trouble,” she says. “I’m just glad I’m able to help.”
Evan Rosato is attending college after undergoing surgery for a brain tumor.
van Rosato was 19 when he first came to VIM Clinic to see Dr. Howard Voss. He’d been suffering strange bouts
of memory loss and wasn’t aware that in fact, he was having seizures. These were “absentia episodes,” dur-
ing which Evan would suddenly stop what he was doing “as though in a movie freeze-frame,” said Dr. Voss.”
E
These “partial com-plex seizures,” are typi-cally seen in children,
Dr. Voss said, and an EEG performed at the clinic showed no siezure activity. So, drawing on VIM’s community partners, Dr. Voss referred Evan for an MRI scan.Evan had a glial cell brain tumor and
needed surgery, so Dr. Voss referred Evan to Dr. John Afshar, a Stuart neurosurgeon. Dr. Afshar thought it best to send Evan
to a brain tumor specialist. They contacted Dr. Ricardo Komotar at the University of Miami, who agreed to do the surgery.Dr. Voss also reached out to neurologist,
Dr. Tracey Cerbone, who put Evan onto anti-seizure medictions. Evan appeared to take it all in stride, but
his mother Helena Rosato said it was one scary ride. “It was just all so fast,” she said. “I didn’t know how to process all the in-formation. I had such stress and anxiety.”Helen says she couldn’t have gotten
through this without the support of all the
physicians and volunteers. The surgery went well — so well, in fact,
that Evan was back in school a week later. And he hasn’t had a siezure since. Now 20, Evan says he has a whole new perspec-tive on life.“It really made me understand that you
shouldn’t dwell on the little things, but appreciate everything you have and liv-ing life,” he said. “I’m just so grateful for Volunteers in Medicine and the support system in the community coming together to help me.”While it’s not every day somone comes
into the clinic with a brain tumor, Dr. Voss says the Rosatos are among the many resi-dents who can get exceptional care even if they can’t afford health insurance. “I think that’s the gift this clinic gives to
the community,” he said. “No one in Martin County can be denied
medical care because of poverty or lack of insurance, and that gives me enormous satisfaction.”

2014 PARADISE GALA RAISES NEARLY $550,000

ith a Major Prize Drawing worth nearly $42,000 and almost 200 silent auction items up for bid, the 14th annual VIM Gala raised closed to $550,000 to care for Martin County residents without any other access to health care. Bonnie Barker-Pappas and George Pappas chaired this year’s gala, despite the fact they were relatively new
to the organiation. They first learned about VIM Clinic during a short presentation at the Lyric Theatre by the late Dorothea Glass, MD. Shortly afterwards, Bonnie became a VIM volunteer.
“We had been looking for a way to give back to the community and after hearing Dr. Glass, we knew right away that VIM was the kind of organization we wanted to
become involved with,” said George Pappas. In addition to excellent patient care, he said, “just as important is the extent to
which VIM is able to leverage its community resources, keeping costs low while provfiding some of the best clinical care in the country. “We think VIM Clinic is nothing short of outstanding.”

Just Call Me Dr. Grandma A hearty congratulations to Clinical Director Betty Tsarnas and volunteer Kathi Harvey, who are now DNPs — Doctors of
Nursing Practice. They received their doctorates at the Florida Atlantic University Christine E. Lynne College of Nursing during graduation ceremonies in May. Betty and Kathi have families and very busy schedules. They worked together on their schoolwork and developed a patient health
and fitness program in partnership with the YMCA. Then one day, out of the mouth of babes, Betty’s granddaughter asked if she was going to become Doctor Grandma. Well, she and Kathi had T-shirts made, which became their class uniforms at the Y!Many students come through our doors to do clinical rotations, but VIM Clinic was particularly well represented at the May
graduation. Three RNs became Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners: Michelle Jabath ARNP, Karin Klause ARNP, who was named the 2014 NCAA Outstanding Student for the College of Nursing, and Amanda Marinelli ARNP, who has begun the doctorate program at FAU.

NEWS
VIM Clinic patients are getting help with their transporta-tion needs thanks to MTM Program Director Lisa Sand-ers, who recently joined our new homeless collaborative. Sanders has provided free monthly bus passes, and Social Worker Kim Ouellette has been registering patients for the low-cost service. MTM provides pick-up and delivery ser-vice for residents who are “transportation disadvantaged” or on Medicaid. They can travel for medical appointments, shopping or socializing.
Rick Baxter, Marketing Director of Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers has joined VIM’s homeless collabora-tive, and graciously supplied Scripps’ boardroom to facili-tate meetings. Two meetings have been held so far and will continue on a quarterly basis.
Mark your calendar! The Capitol Steps comedy group re-turns to the Lyric Theatre on Friday Jan. 30, 2015, for their annual VIM Clinic benefit. It’s an easy date to remember, as it’s the day before our annual gala.

A big welcome to Dr. Howard Robbins, MD. The former Chief Medical Officer at Martin Health System has joined our volunteer ranks. He sees patients Wednes-day mornings at the clinic. Nephrologist Dr. Mauricio Botero-
Velez joins VIM Clinic as a volunteer after retiring from Martin Health Sys-
tem. Also joining us is Reed Upthegrove, a retired EMT.
STUDENTSWelcome to Oksana Massey, RN, an FAU ARNP student;
Ann Cassidy RN; Gracie Willert, who completed her pre-med at Duke University; Olivia Carelli; Kara D’Andrea; Chase Gardner and Matthew Hogan.Meantime, Evgeny Idrosov, our third-year medical student
from FSU has wrapped up his year-long rotation with Dr. Howard Voss. However, we’re not saying farewell just yet to our Class of 2015 student. Evgeny is returning in January to continue clinical work.
STAFF
Social worker Kim Ouellette, MSW, joined the staff of VIM Clinic. Kim comes to us from Martin Health System. She has worked in both healthcare and substance abuse. Her role at VIM Clinic is to help patients ob-tain the services the need, with the help of grants from Allegany Franciscan Ministries and the Florida Blue Foundation.Vickie Dodds, ARNP, has accepted a position with the
Council on Aging of Martin County, where she will spe-cialize in geriatrics. However, she’ll continue to see patients at VIM Clinic twice a month.
UPDATES
VIM Clinic is moving into electronic medical records (EMRs), thanks to the generosity of Board Member Patsy Conrades and her son-in-law Kevin Hutchinson, a tech-nology entrepreneur. Donated by eClinicalWorks, our program and implementation “Go Live” date is in August. This EMR system is an enormous gift that will significantly streamline VIM’s record-keeping, administration and pa-tient care protocols, while improving our data-collection and grant-writing opportunities.

novins golf for life benefits vimThe 13th annual Robert F. Novins Memorial Golf
Tournament in May was also the second to benefit VIM Clinic. By all accounts, it was a smashing suc-cess, despite a quick change of venue. The tournament was scheduled to return to Sailfish
Point Golf Club on Hutcinson Island. But as the date drew nearer and the planning committee began to meet, members realized there was going to be a major scheduling conflict. Speedboat races normally held in
April had been re-scheduled for the same weekend of May 16, and the bridge to Hutchinson Island was going to be closed to traffic. The golf committee decided to
change venues to avoid the bridge. It was going to be too difficult traveling between Sailfish Point and Carsons Tavern, where a sig-nificant portion of the fund-raising takes place with a pre-tournment reception, games and auctions.Fortunately, the director of the Sailfish Golf Club, Vic-
tor Tortorici graciously agreed to cancel VIM’s booking, and Willoughby Golf Club on the mainland happened to be
available that same weekend. The tournament went off without a hitch and raised $90,000 for VIM.
“The support this year has really been great,” said Carson Novins, who, with his sister Beth Novins, has been organizing the hugely popular event since 2002.
“I’m very grateful to all the sponsors, players and donors who’ve contributed to the success of this tournament,” said
Novins, an avid golfer and member of the Society of One Armed Golfers. “The golf is important of course, but the
goal, really, is to have a lot of fun while supporting a great cause.”
Over the years, the golf tourna-ment has raised more than half a million dollars for cancer treatment facilities at Martin Memorial Hos-pital, where Robert F. Novins was treated until his death in 2002. In 2013, the Novins decided to
support VIM Clinic and the golf tournament became our second major fundraiser of the year.
“My father believed in philanthropy and VIM Clinic is a great fit for our philanthropic goals,” Novins said. “It’s clearly an organization our supporters can get behind.”
Winners Chad Gates, Bob Watson, Gerry Knebels & Stu Lamb wear the “Blueberry Jackets,” as Carson Novins holds the coveted silver cup.
BStreet Band Rocks for VIMWe’ve been busy “friend-raising” as well as fundraising this
season, organizing new events to grow the VIM Clinic family. Events Coordinator Christina Bodner convinced the
BStreet Band to do a fundraising performance at Carsons Tavern in March. The band is the longest playing, and one of the most successful tribute bands ever. They’ve been cov-ering Bruce Springsteen for over 30 years and are in great demand throughout the U.S.
They were also great group of guys who put on a wonder-ful show. Tickets were $50 and included a buffet dinner. Attendees were treated to
their favorite Springsteen hits in a venue that was up close and personal. One of the highlights was the
appearance of Kitty Fitzke, 81,
who’s known the band since the 80s, when she hired them to play at her Jersey Shore establishment. Two of her daughters live in the Stuart area, so when they
found out the band was playing for VIM, Kitty flew down for the performance.Golf legend Nick
Price surprised more than a few guests by showing up behind the bar to pull draughts. He obliged anyone who wanted a picture. It was a great night
of meeting old friends and making new ones. Better yet, the BStreet
Band has agreed to a return engagement!

lation living in Martin County.
This mission will be accomplished primarily by volunteers, retired medical professionals and other residents in the area, working in concert with
