ON 28th September, Liberty Midlands Mall was showered with birthday blessings as part of their 10th Birthday celebra-tions. The inclement weath-er did not deter the hundreds of Pietermaritzburg residents who poured in to support the mall on their milestone. The crowd was enthralled as they moved to the majes-tic sounds of Khaya Mthethwa and The Arrows. Not deterred by the cold wet weather shop-pers joined co-emcee Fezile Makhanya outside for the re-leasing of hundreds of balloons into the air.Hundreds of prizes were giv-en away at this mesmerizing event that celebrated 10 years of excellent shopping by one of Pietermaritzburg’s favou-rite malls.    Amongst the priz-

es on the day was a Toyota Yaris which was won by Johan van der Walt. He was more than de-lighted to be the proud owner of a brand new car. The holiday getaway to Thailand was won by an ecstatic Lungile Thande-ka Mazibuko.

National Cupcake Day was also celebrated at the mall with thousands of beautifully deco-rated cupcakes sold in aid of children with cancer.  There was even a raffl e for two giant cupcakes at the stand.  “Liberty Midlands Mall would

like to thank everyone who braced the cold weather to cel-ebrate their 10 year birthday party. We endeavour to keep de-livering an exceptional shop-ping experience for the next 10 years and more” says Umi Khan.

A fantastic 10 year celebration for Liberty Midlands Mall

FORUM’S favourite, Patricia Glyn, was back on stage at the August meeting to talk about her journey with the Bushmen. Two years ago she met Dawid Kruiper, the then 76-year-old leader of the Khomani,

the last surviving Bushman tribe. Dawid longed to revisit their sites of symbolic importance before he died so Patricia mortgaged her house, rounded up her team and set off on yet another adventure.

Having been free to roam the African continent for thousands of years, persecution, war and slavery forced the Bushmen to re-treat to the Kalahari where they became showpieces. Dawid and his brother, Buks, were anxious to show their children and grand-children how their legendary grandfather, Makai, had lived and the survival skills he had taught them. They also yearned to re-visit the Khomanis’ ancient birth, death and burial sites. The jour-ney proved to be a life-changing experience for Patricia and her view of the terrain changed from it being a barren wilderness to a bountiful provider. Living with three generations of Bushmen in the Kalahari for two months gave her a very different perspective of the desert and an appreciation of the value of an amazing peo-ple who have been forced to live under appalling circumstances. The Bushmen have a reciprocity with nature. “They are of the landscape and belong to the land,” said Patricia. “They constant-

ly observe the environment; they know how to read animal behaviour; they use the sand as their daily newspaper; they under-stand the medicinal and nutritious value of plants; they eat only when hungry; no food is ever wasted, and they always thank a plant when they take from it.”Patricia grew to love these people. She found them to be great actors, mimics and storytellers, and she came to understand their pain at being separated from the land. She was appalled to fi nd the human rights abuse and the situation of the last remain-ing Bushmen which has led them to drown their pain in alcohol. Dawid entrusted Pa-tricia with his secret which had been in the family for 100 years, and this she has shared in her latest book entitled What Da-wid Knew – A Journey with the Kruipers. Patricia has set up a trust for the Khoma-nis, and fi fty percent of the proceeds from her book go to the trust. “I have a Bush-man on my shoulder for the rest of my life,” she said.

PEOPLE on their way to work on Friday 4th October were a little puzzled to receive a box of popcorn by Hirsch’s Pietermaritzburg staff. It was a lovely sunny morning and the puz-zled travellers soon turned to happy travellers with boxes of popcorn to nibble on. Defi nite-ly a cure for those traffi c jams. The team of Hirsch’s staff was very enthusiastic about this feel good act and there were smiles all round.

Popcorn fun!

The Mortimer Toyota Mixed Fours Bowls Tournament held at the Mooi River Coun-try Club on Sunday, 29th September, got off to a chilly start. That applied only to the weather because the atmosphere on the greens was warm with friendly rivalry and chilly weather could not dampen the spir-its of the players.Twenty four teams from Wartburg, Pieter-

maritzburg, Howick and Estcourt joined the members of Mooi River Bowls Club for the tournament. After three games of twelve ends each the winners of the main prizes sponsored by Mortimer Toy-ota were Dave and Roni Bearpark, Squire Flint and Zelda Siebert from Lynnwood Park. Second place went to Paul and Di Pringle, Norman Cole and Glyn Evans from Mooi River. Dennis and Kathy Lariv-iere, Pat Fleet and Tony Ward from Ho-wick won third prize. Session prizes were pockets of potatoes sponsored by Ivan-hoe Farming.Mooi River Bowls Club has a tabs-in game every Saturday afternoon and so-cial bowls on Wednesday afternoons. Anyone interested in playing bowls (be-ginners and experienced bowlers) should contact Toni Hanrahan on 072 158 3364.

HOWICK BOWLING CLUB

MEMBERS attending the social on Friday evening are reminded that proceedings will get underway round about 6:00pm. Please remember to bring a plate of sa-voury snacks to share.Last Saturday afternoon saw some excite-ment at the club. An initial report was re-ceived that the club house was on fi re! When Des Morrish arrived on the scene he saw that the fi re was actually con-fi ned to the verge of the N3 beyond the club boundary. A huge fi re engine was parked in the club grounds and the crew was busy damping down the smouldering remains of the veld grass along the fence. Neighbours had reacted in dedicated community spirit. One had promptly sum-moned the fi re-fi ghters and three young men, Daniel, David and Peter from the ad-joining townhouse complexes were using a garden hose to douse fl ames. Our sincere thanks to all for their concern and assistance. No damage was done to the club premises, but it may take some months for the reek of burnt grass to leave the club house.Janice Shipway has made use of the ren-ovation period to do some tidying up in the gardens, which are looking splendid. Thanks Janice. The other work is proceeding smooth-ly and we should be back in business on 14th October. The postponed Queen’s Cup competition will be played on 19th October. To get your name onto the entry list, call George Oldham (033-343 4345) or Derick Hull (033-343 2901).

Levelling and top dressing will begin this week.Response to the invitation to join our off-season social was intense and the forty available places were snapped up over-night. We cannot accommodate any more for this event. While you are idling away the hours and waiting to start playing again, you may like to test your knowledge of the game. Pull out the Laws of Bowls booklet and familiarise yourself with the measure-ments applicable to our game. Find an-swers to these questions: How far must a bowl travel to be a legal delivery? How long is a legal end, from the front edge of the mat to the mat-side of the jack? How wide must a rink be? These distances are important and it is incumbent on any se-rious bowler to know them.To those members who are visiting our neighbours during the closure, good bowling.
