Welcome to the Village of Carmangay 

With a beautiful blend of prairie, river valley, and mountains, the Village of Carmangay is the perfect place for any couple to raise a family.  Carmangay offers unlimited opportunities for business, industrial or residential projects. Affordable, fully serviced lots, low taxes and a unique geographical location provide opportunities galore for you and your family.  Carmangay is the oldest municipality in Vulcan County.  C.W. Carman and his wife (nee Gay), settled in 1907.  The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) branch line made Carmangay a "boom town" in its' early years.  During this time, the rail line extended only as far as Carmangay.  The prosperity ended in 1911 when the bridge over the Little Bow River was completed, and the rail line then extended north.  Nevertheless, Carmangay continues to progress.  Carmangay is the "Home of Southern Hospitality" and offers an excellent quality of life with family and country‐style living, fresh air, blue skies and a progressive community spirit.

Carmangay has a moderate climate with warm  summers.  Winters are cool but are moderated by warm Chinook winds blowing from the west coast.

Economic Indicators 

In November, 2010 the Alberta Transportation and Municipal Sustainability Grant funded the replacement of the major water and sewer lines in the town of Carmangay.  The 300 MW Blackspring Ridge project, located in near Carmangay, is comprised of 166 Vestas wind turbines.  Construction began in May 2013, and was completed in May 2014.  With an investment of about CAD $0.6 billion, the project represents the largest investment in wind energy in Western Canada.  More than 350 jobs were created during the construction phase with 20 permanent operations and maintenance jobs.

Health Care and Emergency Services 

Carmangay has a fire hall and a volunteer fire brigade and ambulance service is provided through Vulcan & District Emergency Medical Team. 

 

  

The nearest hospital is in Vulcan.  The Vulcan Health Center is an 8 bed active facility with 15 long‐term care beds, radiology, fully equipped modern lab and modern emergency area.  Services include occupational therapy, mental health worker, social worker and palliative care.  Other health Service in Vulcan include a chiropractor, optometrist, podiatrist, hearing aid service, occupational therapy, massage therapist, mental health and social workers, and a Public Health Unit.

Area Attractions 

Vulcan Trek Station and convention ‐ Vul‐Con scheduled yearly in July with special guest actors from the Star Trek movies and series. 

Vulcan Golf and Country Club 

McGregor Lake: Fishing all year round. Fire Pits at each campsite. Swimming area, dock, playground, washrooms. 

Little Bow Provincial Park. 

Carmangay Tipi Rings ‐ a day use recreation area located west of the village where you can view an archeological tipi ring site. 

Coffin Handle Butte: The Coffin Handle Butte Legend is displayed at the Carmangay Tourist Information Centre. 

Blackfoot Crossing: http://www.blackfootcrossing.ca/   

Majorville Cairn (Medicine Wheel):  Consists of a central cairn, which is linked to a surrounding stone circle by 28 spokes, and the cultural landscape which contains this monument. The designation encompasses 160 acres and is situated on a height of land with an expansive view of the surrounding prairie landscape west of the Bow River in southern Alberta. 

Twin Valley Reservoir and Campground.  Located about 40 km southwest of Carmangay at the base of the Twin Valley Dam. 

Travers Dam. 

Crowfoot Ferry: Operates 7 a.m. to midnight daily from April 23 to noon of November 14.  5 km south of Junction of Highways 1 and 56, on Range Road 201 (pdf 266 K).
