Swanland has looked very picturesque throughout the season.

Swanland Festival was extremely well attended this year and the week was fine. Many positive comments were made about the very varied programme. Indeed newevents are already being planned for 2012. Thank you to the organizers for makingthe festival a success.

The Wildlife Group and the Swanland Pond Partnership work hard organising manyactivities. Recently a group of volunteers carried out general maintenance to ensurethat the pond area is safe, attractive to view, and environmentally friendly. The next‘Pond Day’ will be on October 30th when the plants will be cut back and the areatidied up. Thanks to all the volunteers in anticipation.

Swanland now has three village entrance signs. The first two are in situ, and the thirdwill soon be placed on the left hand side of West Ella Road. Thanks must be expressedto our sponsors, K.C, Harry Sidwell, Swanland Nurseries and the S.V.A for this newsign. A new VAT increase means that future signs will now cost £2209. If anyone isinterested in sponsoring the next sign then please contact Jan Rogerson, 634 583,for more details. ArtERY’s programme of live events, and the film list for SwanlandScreen are both in circulation. Thanks to the local organisers for allowing us to travel‘just down the road’ for our entertainment.

Swanland Twinning Associationwww.swanland.info/lestrem.htm

On July 14th of this year, Bastille Day, the annual Boules competitionwas held for members at the Hessle Tennis Club. A most enjoyable evening sawMarie Wood and son Jordi, plus treasurer David Haddlesey win the 2010 title. A‘poisson et frites’ supper rounded off another successful night for the Association.

The main fund-raiser for the year was held at Swanland Village Hall on October 9th.As usual, a well attended Quiz Night featuring everything and anything about Franceboosted the coffers in readiness for the 2011 visit of Lestrem to Swanland. Thedates of this visit are yet to be confirmed but normally occur on the May Day weekendstarting April 29th.

Swanland ShowThe thirtieth Swanland Show, held in St. Barnabas Church Hall,on Saturday 11th September, was another successful show.Ninety-four adult entrants mounted a superb display of flowersand vegetables, handicrafts, produce, art and floral art, plus anever-increasing entry of photographs. All trophies were welldeserved. There was a pleasing increase in the children’s sectionof gardens, models and art, and of course the usual fantasticentry in the handwriting section.

This year for the first time prize money was awarded. This was based on the trophieswon. Whilst the number of entrants from outside the village is growing - 50% of theadult entry of 94 – the number of Swanland residents’ entries is falling slightly. If youhave any ideas why, please contact me on 631 110. We are indebted to the committee, and friends of the show, who give their help to make the event so successful.

Overheard from someone living outside the village

....”Gosh – they are ever so posh in Swanland

– they even have Koi carp in their village pond!

SVA Newsletter - Autumn 2010

The Village Hall starts the autumn seasonlooking extremely smart. The interior hasbeen freshly redecorated during thesummer holidays.

In addition, the floor of the Meeting Hall, which has always been an attractiveoriginal feature of the converted OldSchool, has been sanded and varnished to a lovely golden sheen.

Additions continue to be made to the Village Hall’s amenities. After being awardeda laptop by British Telecom and a modest grant of money, the Village Hall committeehas had a wireless broadband connection installed. Hirers can now offer courses onaccessing and using the internet, or will be able to use material available on theinternet for teaching purposes.

Janet Barnes is offering taster courses – see our website (address above) or postersand flyers in the Hall. No doubt people will find other ways of using internet accessin the Hall creatively. One suggestion is to use Skype along with a projector to putabsent members of families in touch at family reunions.

Another feature recently added is a hanging rail around the walls of the Main Hall, which can be used for the temporary installation of drapes, bunting, flags, paintings, displays, etc. We shall see how creative our hirers can be with such a facility.

Swanland Village Hall News www.swanlandvillagehall.info

The first Tea Dance will take place at 2,00pm onThursday 18th November, and is being organizedby Alison Morris, the Community Co-ordinator andEvents Organiser of Age Concern; but it is hoped that someone inSwanland might like to take on the task of organising future Tea Dances.

Swanland Neighbourhood Watch UpdatePrevention by home security and awareness by vigilanceare major keys to a successful neighbourhood watchscheme. Swanland residents are encouraged to bevigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.Recently such vigilance in Swanland resulted in thearrest of a prolific house burglar, which may not havehappened without the call in the first place.

Call 999 to report any suspicious activity and for lesseremergency call Brough Police on 630000 (answer phone ) for non-emergencycall 0845 6060222.

A volunteer has come forward to co-ordinate St. Mary’s Walk and a NHWArea sign is in place. More volunteers are needed for Mill Rise and Northfieldbecause of the extent of these roads and resignation of co-ordinators in theseareas. Please come forward if you can help, you will be very welcome at any ofour co-ordinator meetings.

As the nights draw in villains take advantage of the early darkness well intoChristmas and the New Year. As an extra precaution keep curtains/blinds closedwhen the lights are on. Do not leave valuables in your car overnight and keepgarage doors locked when unattended. Burglars do not like alarms, dogs andnosy neighbours.

Local police crime reports for Swanland can be accessed from the village website‘What’s New Page’. For further information about NHW please contact DavidMorris 631 909.

SPFA ASSOCIATION is a registered charity, was formed in 1987 under aconstitution. It holds a lease that expires on 1st April 2089. It holds an annual generalmeeting after the financial year end. There are five elected trustees holding ultimateresponsibility for financial and operational matters. General committee meetingstake place every 6 or 8 weeks. Anyone living in Swanland or North Ferriby mayattend and participate in these.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The 2009/10 annual general meeting took placeon Monday 4th October. The following areas were discussed:

1 Future development 2 Organisation. 3 Fundraising. 4 Future Challenges

BOULES PITCH The provision for the playing of Boules is being considered.Anyone with particular knowledge or connections should contact us.

PARKING One of the consequences of our success is the traffic generated especiallyat this time of year when two or three teams can be playing on our various pitches atthe same time. We are not able to create any more parking and would ask that teamswalk if possible or share if car travel is unavoidable.

DOGS Dog owners continue to cause a problem. When asked to leave their dog intheir car or at the gate they become most abusive. On 10th October a father with hischildren told a man with a dog to leave and to stop using such abusive language infront of his children.

JAZZ BLUES-LATIN ACOUSTIC Saturday 6th November at the Village Hall.Featuring ‘Bandiqui’. Doors open at 7.30pm.With bar serving beer/Lager and winewith a selection of hot drinks and gift stalls. Admission will be by ticket £6.

Swanland Post Offices: Part 2: 1962-2009

In 1962 when Mr Gerald Frow retired a Mr Harold Fleetham, who had workedat Waites shop on Main Street (now McColls Convenience store), took on the job ofPostmaster. He was always ably assisted by his wife, Edna. During his tenure thelayout of the Post Office changed to create more shop space, the construction of anew longer counter (with 2 hatches and security glass) and a small office now behindthe counter. The original counter on the east wall was protected by a simple metalgrille, the new counter was moved to the south wall. Older readers will recall MrsEdna Fleetham who ably assisted her husband either delivering the post or, servingbehind the counter.

In 1984 Mr Fleetham retired and Andrew Short (the present Caretaker of ChristChurch and the Village Hall) took over as Postmaster. His wife Rosie is thegranddaughter of Mr Gerald Frow, so the Frow connection was again restored.

In 1988 the business passed to Mr Grahame Wroot (then living in Northfield). Heintroduced a wide range of goods for sale including more stationery goods and cards. He too was assisted by his wife as the village was still rapidly growing.

In the 1990’s the Wroots moved away and the business was taken over once againby a lady called Jane who commuted daily to Swanland.

In July 2009 the Post Office changed hands yetagain and our Postmistress is currently KerryWeeks, who lives in Ferriby.

This is proving to be a most challenging time forSwanland Post Office. Many of the services ittraditionally provided have either been transferredto the Crown P.O at Hessle or are being phasedout.

However, some valuable services remain and it’sup to us to keep supporting this historical andimportant institution. Many high street bankaccounts can be accessed at the post office, whichalso sells a range of toys, books, cards andstationery.

Calling all Villagers!SVA Membership this year has been quite low and we must encourage everyone tosupport us and to have a say on all village matters. Whether you are young or old,new to the village or a long-standing resident, we’d really appreciate your support.

There are various events throughout the year and our website is regularly updatedwith news and forthcoming activities as well as general useful information.(www.swanland.info)

We only ask for £2.00 per person per year. This may not sound a lot (additionaldonations are always welcome), but it is sufficient to help us “tick-over” and arrangeour additional fund-raising events. We’d like ideas on what you’d like to see happenin the village and how the SVA funds could be spent. Apart from funding morevillage signs there are no other commitments planned for next year. Soplease…Support us for 2011...and have your say!!

2011-2012 renewals now being accepted!
