Men’s and Women’s Volleyball vs. CUCA

For the final league games of the season, our Men’s and Women’s Vi-king Teams played Concordia Thunder. On Friday the women did not play as well as they hoped but still came out with a three game shut out. Stefanie Zahara received POG. After some sentimental words from Coach Greg Ryan about two players Matthew Yoder, and Josh Ryan- who’s final home game this would be- the Men took Concordia by storm; beating them in three. Matthew Yoder got Player of the Game. Saturday was incredibly disappointing for the women’s team, who lost 3 sets to 1 against Concordia. The Men’s team played their entire bench, including the red shirts that had only been practicing up until that point. All of them got out on the court and were successful. They also pulled a win out in 5 sets. Andrew Kaliel was player of the Game.

Hockey vs. Briercrest

The Augustana men’s hockey team had a very successful weekend with both games at the Encana arena, hosting the Briercrest Clip-pers. In the entire weekend series the Vikings out scored the Clippers 18-3. On Friday evening Dane Bonish and Craig Cornelson each tal-lied twice and David Ritz made 16 saves leading the Vikes to a 10-2 victory.

Saturday afternoon was much the same for the men as they skated to an 8-1 win. Quinn Amiel scored twice and Paul Kolida allowed only one goal during Saturday’s contest. Going into the final weekend of the regular season the Vikes have 6 skaters in the top 20 for league scoring and lead the entire ACAC in goals. The final weekend will see the Vikings playing host to the Concordia Thunder Saturday evening at the Encana arena at 7:30.

The Groundhog Grunt: Augustana Skiers at theEdmonton Alberta Cup

The Augustana Vikings ski team participated in the Alberta Cup ski races in Edmon-ton on February 2 and 3rd. The tough race course is renowned for its grueling climbs and its unfortunate proximity to both a sewage treatment plant and processing plant. Undaunted by these venue concerns, Augustana skiers proved they were up for the challenge, bringing home 8 medals: a gold, four silvers, and three bronzes!Augustana alum Andrew Pohl won Saturday’s 15km skate race, while Kieran Baird and Andrew Brisbin finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively. Lauren Brookes placed 1st in the women’s 10km race, a mere 4 seconds ahead of teammate Maja Zimmermann, who skied smoothly to her 2nd place finish. Emma Norris and Ilona Gyapay submitted the tough climbs to 7th and 9th place.Kieran commented on his 2nd place finish, saying, “My shape was good”, and adding, “My skis were good, the trails were good. It was good to have such a competitive field at a local race.”Sunday’s classic race saw Andrew Brisbin with a strong 2nd place result in the men’s 15km race, with Kieran Baird finishing 3rd. The long hills were no match for Kalli Green’s powerful classic technique, and she skied to 2nd place in the women’s 10km race, with Lauren Brookes in third. Ilona Gyapay posted a solid 6th place finish, with Emma Norris finishing 9th.The skiers send out a big thanks to Coach Les’ timely ski delivery and waxing, and to Patrick Moore for his expertise over the weekend. The racers also recommend Duch-ess Bakery for any after-race confectioneries.

The Canadian Birkebeiner is a ski race with an interesting international back-story. As the legend goes, in 13th century Norway, a plot was hatched to murder the infant prince Haakon Haakonson, heir to the throne. To prevent his untimely and probably gruesome demise, two strong “birch leg” (birke-beiner) warriors skied the toddler to safety, crossing snowy mountain passes and menacing forests. This treacherous journey was fraught with peril (not to mention the obvious issue of carrying a one-year old over 50km). In present times, skiers race and tour the 55km distances carrying a weighted pack to symbolize young Haakon. There are three official “Birkebeiners” in the world: the original “Birkebeinerrennet” in Norway, the American skate Birkebeiner, and the Canadian Birkebeiner hosted in the Elk Island National Park region of Alberta. This year’s race was, in a word, challenging. A intense and warm snowfall minutes before the race drastically changed the wax for skis. With negligible grip and glide, Augustana skiers headed out on course with work ahead of them. Despite these tough conditions, all racers finished, with strong per-formances by Kalli Green, Ilona Gyapay, Kieran Baird and Andrew Brisbin. In the 31km Edmonton Journal Tour, Kalli placed 1st in her age category, and finished 17th overall. Ilona Gyapay finished 3rd in the same category and 21st overall. Reflecting on her race, Ilona said, “Snow conditions made for a tough race. However, the real birch leg warriors who saved Haakon Haakonson probably face worse conditions. Overall I am pleased with my race and I hope that the trend will continue for future rac-es.” Lauren Brookes, Emma Norris, Nellie Dow and Johanna Ferrie also competed in the 31km race.Kieran Baird bested tough snow and competitors, finishing 1st in his age category and 4th overall in the 55km Birkie Lite, with team mate Andrew Brisbin skiing to 2nd place in his age category and 6th overall in the Birkie Lite. Ryan Burlingame, forgoing his biathlon rifle for a pair of clearly superior classic skis, skied to 22nd place overall and 4th in his age category. Maja Zimmermann also took on the 55km ski marathon, and placed a respectable 47th place overall and 6th in her category.A big shout out to Coach Les, who competed in the 55km Birkie with pack, skiing in a bright yellow bumblebee suit, smiling and encouraging fellow competitors and maintaining his relentlessly positive attitude throughout the entirety of a race he described as “carnage”.Next up for the Augustana ski team is a trip over reading week to Grande Prairie to compete at West-ern Canadian Championships. The Final Word: 2013 Playoff Preview

What a difference time can make. In 2008, men’s curling was the only indoor team sport to be in the playoffs at the end of the ACAC season. 5 years later, Augusta-na now has several teams into the playoffs, some comfortably, some by narrower margins, but all looking to leave an impression when the dust settles. Let’s take a look at the next few weeks.Curling: Our curling teams continue to hold their own amongst the elite in the ACAC. The men’s team posted a 5-1 record at the recent winter regional tourna-ment in Edmonton, which moves them to the third seed and qualifies them for the ACAC Championship Tournament at the end of the month. The mixed team will also be there as the 2nd seed. The women’s team will not be going; however, they had an improved showing at the winter regional, going 3-3.Hockey: The men’s hockey team has already qualified for the postseason and they still have a slight chance at finishing 2nd in the standings, therefore receiving a bye into the Final Four. Despite a few key losses from last season, including cap-tain and league MVP Torrie Dyck, the Vikings have continued to be a dominant force in the conference, leading the league in goals and featuring one of the best goaltending tandems in the league. Dan Hope leads the team in points with 41, which is 2nd in the league. While last year’s Finals opponent N.A.I.T. has put to-gether another strong team and rival S.A.I.T. remains a tough squad, Augustana’s hockey team is primed and looking forward to defending their league title.Women’s Basketball: While Leanne Shenton’s squad finally dropped a contest, they remain the heavy favorite going into the ACAC playoffs. Augustana will be hosting the Elite 8 this year, giving yet another advantage to a team that is al-ready full of weapons. Strength down the middle in all star Kelsey Lund, great outside shooting in Taryn Story, speed and precision in Monique Jarrett, spectac-ular play making in Kari Kubinec and a strong contingent off the bench has led the Vikings to their position atop the standings. The main issue this team will have to face is that they are the number one target; every team wants a piece of Augusta-na and the girls will have to be mentally focused and up to the challenge. If they are, then this will be a memorable conference championship for Vikings fans and Vikings women’s basketball.Men’s Basketball: After narrowly qualifying for the playoffs for the first time in years, Dave Drabiuk and company have steadily improved and now need a win or two against Keyano this weekend to solidify their position in the top six and bet-ter positioning in shooting for the ACAC Elite 8. In addition to the return of point guard Tony Nguyen, this team has seen 2nd year Jamine Lockhart take on a larg-er role, rookie Cole Aikens as an impact player off the bench and continued stand-out performances from veterans Shayne Bruney and David Shantz.

The team has also been bolstered by the return of Taylor Foreman after the 3rd year was in Europe the past semester.This will be the first time in Drabiuk’s tenure that the team is going into the play-offs strong with momentum and looking to make some noise against the best in the conference. This will also mark the final games which 5th year Shayne Bruney, 4th year David Shantz, 3rd year Michael Swampy, 3rd year Logan Gray and 3rd year Simon Irving put on a Vikings uniform.Women’s Volleyball: They did not make it to the post-season, however, the wom-en’s volleyball team have taken giant strides towards getting there. After 2 win-less seasons the girls ended that streak, winning their opening home matches. They went on to finish with 5 wins and had several competitive losses against the teams ahead of them. The team received a big boost from rookies this season, including outside hitters Keri Alcorn and Laura Kvemshagen who went toe to toe with the best outside hitters in the league. Despite continued growing pains and another absence from the post-season, the women have made significant progress and are looking promising heading into the future.Men’s Volleyball: After their breakout performance last year in qualifying for the playoffs, the men’s volleyball team struggled early in the year with a tough first-half schedule, playing a nationally ranked team every other week. Howev-er, in the second half of the season they have picked up steam, qualified for the post-season as the 9th seed once again and will now face Grant MacEwan on Friday in a one match affair with a trip to the Elite Eight on the line. A number of factors have helped in this turn around, players adapting to new positions like right-side-turned middle Nathan Lehman, but the main change has been that of focus, as the team has been able to improve leaps and bounds in their mental toughness and play a more disciplined team game, based on defense and consis-tency. The team has also seen its younger players step up, such as 2nd year mid-dle Kieran Murphy who finished 6th in blocks-per-set. Despite their lower rank-ing, the Vikings have stood toe to toe against the best this season and are looking forward to the sudden death post-season ahead. This playoff run will also mark the departure of 4th year Matthew Yoder and 5th year Josh Ryan.

Whether you wish to attend basketball’s final home stand this weekend, hockey’s last regular season home game on Saturday or men’s volleyball at King’s Univer-sity College in Edmonton this Friday, come on out and cheer hard as our teams get ready to close out the 2013 ACAC season.
