“Checking Out” of School – Procedures Contact: L. Smith (833-3300 ext. 3323) With the end of the year quickly approaching and the weather becoming quite beautiful, more and more students are itching to get out of school. We have had an increase in the number of people calling for students to check out of school early each day. Please give the attendance office advanced notice when a student is going to be checking out of school. A note brought to the attendance office at the beginning of the school day will be greatly appreciated. This will allow the paper work to be processed and for the student to receive their dismissal slip in a timely fashion. If your student calls you saying they don’t feel well, please ask them to go to the nurse’s office. She will evaluate the student and call you – giving you the option of checking the student out of school. Thank you very much for your help at this busy time of the year!

Lunch Deliveries

Please refrain from making daily food deliveries. If you must bring food to your child during the school day, please pre arrange with your child to come to the attendance office between classes and pick up the food. Students are not to meet you outside the school or at the front entrance to collect their lunch.

Monies Owed Contact: J. Tucci (833-3300 ext. 3326) Students may pay with cash or check (made out to FWBHS) to Mrs. Lemasters in the guidance office. GRADUATION ANNOUCEMENT

Students and Parents of Fort Walton Beach High School, Seniors are studying for their final exams. Teachers are finalizing their curriculums. An underlying current of excitement spans the entire campus. On every corner of Fort Walton Beach High School, you can hear word of that fateful approaching evening: graduation. As the class of 2018 culminates their high school careers, we celebrate their years of hard work. However, our unabashed celebration reaps major consequences for an unlikely population of creatures that would likely seldom cross our minds. Balloons have been an integral part of grand ceremonies like commencement for years. Families and friends release these colorful orbs with each name called to create a display of excitement. The way balloons float away from our grasp and disappear into the sky might create a misconception about the balloon’s life cycle. Unfortunately, balloons pertain to the same laws of gravity as any other object: if you throw one into the air, it will come down. As we live so intimately nestled on the coasts of major bodies of water, balloons often descend over these basins, greatly impacting marine ecosystems. Marine life can become suffocated by balloons through digestion, entangled by balloon ribbons, or starved by swallowed balloons blocking their intestinal tract. No ecosystem is safe from the effects of balloons. Animals in forests, fields, lakes, and oceans all experience these disastrous consequences of balloon pollution. Releasing balloons, in general, is simply littering. Florida Statute 379.233 even introduces a fine for those who release large quantities of balloons. This year, the Environmentally Conscious Youth club urges the community to refrain from bringing balloons to the class of 2018’s commencement ceremony. There are many alternatives to balloons, including streamers, banners, spinners, or giant bubbles. We can all make a significant difference if we continue to advocate against this kind of celebratory pollution and set an example for other schools!
