This year, Community High school students displayed their school pride during the week of January 8 through the 11. Because of the heavy snow, the last dress up day was January 26. The first day was Tangled (crazy hair) Day. On Tuesday, students were given the opportunity to dress up as their favorite hero or villain (Mother Gothel vs. Rapunzel day). That Wednesday, the students dressed up in all of their Tennessee gear in Tennessee Pride Day. The following day, students dressed up in attire for Throwback Thursday. Then, the snow hit, causing the game and final dress up day to be moved to January 26. The day of the game was Class Color Day. There was a lot of fun showed throughout Homecoming week. Students were decked out in attire all week as the school spirit showed throughout the whole school, making memories that will last a lifetime!

It is almost that time of the year again! The football field, with goals on both ends, is being painted. The ball is ripping into the net for a goal! The Community Vikings soccer season is about to start! Losing very few seniors from last year, the team is excited about what is ahead of them for this season. The Vikings enter a new district that eliminates all of the AA schools from the old alignment.

Coach Mark Neill says he expects to be competitive this year with all of the upperclassmen on the team. Coach Neill also

expects the team to advance farther than any team in Community High School history.

Coach Neill states, “Of the other three teams in the district, we have traditionally had success against two of them. (Forrest and Cascade). I am excited for this upcoming season!” The Vikings will also be adding a new coach to their staff in Coach Corey Bishop. The expectations are high heading into this season. How will the Vikings handle the pressure of a smaller district? We will find out soon!

What is love? Is it emotion? Is it physical? Is it just a scientific chemical? Love is all of these three, as a matter of fact, but there is more science than there is emotion and physical attractions. Although these three all work together in a cohesive way, the chemicals within your brain, such as Oxytocin, Dopamine, Serotonin, and Norepinephrine, all have major effects on your way of thinking, your actions, and even your appetite. These very same chemicals deal with what we perceive as love. For example, Norepinephrine, the chemical that plays a large role in your fight or flight response, also deals with early attraction that people often confuse for love at first sight. Many people don’t think about love in this way, thinking it’s just “their heart,” when in reality, it’s all about the way you and your brain works.

Groundhog Day first originated from the Christian holiday Candlemas. Christians believed that a sunny Candlemas meant that there would be another forty days of winter. Germans developed their own take on the legend, pronouncing the day sunny only if badgers and other animals glimpsed their own shadows. In the 18th and 19th centuries, German immigrants brought this tradition with them and chose the native animal, the groundhog. From there, the everlasting tradition has continued on as we know it today!

During the winter, many of us look forward to it snowing. Mainly we get excited for two reasons: We genuinely like snow, or we like the days off from school show brings with it. What makes it snow? That’s a bunch of scientific stuff that could be further delved into, but what about rituals? It might be silly, but there are such things as rituals to invoke desired weather patterns. These patterns were used by the Native Americans, Chinese, Slavic, and Romanians. The rituals were done for religious and celebration purposes. Examples include rain dance ceremonies, “rainmaking,” sun dances, and other weather modification rituals. The most contemporary form of these rituals is the so-called snow dance. It was what most of us grew up being told to do if we wanted snow the next day. Other rituals include wearing pajamas inside out when going to bed. Another superstition has to do with ice cubes; you can either flush them down the toilet or throw them out the window. Perhaps you should sleep with silverware underneath your pillow or put a white crayon in your freezer along with a snowball, making sure to walk backwards all the way to your bed. Anything for a snow day, right?

Coming into the season, the Tennessee Titans were on the cusp of pushing over the edge of their playoff drought. The Titans had not played a playoff game since January 10, 2008 against the Baltimore Ravens, and to make things more interesting, they had not won a playoff game since January 3, 2004! It had been a long time since the Titans experienced postseason success of any kind. The Titans opened up their season with an 8-4 record; this was enough to hold the division lead, but soon after was a major collapse. The Titans lost their next three games, and this set up a “win and you are in” game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Titans and Jaguars game was played in near freezing temperature, which explains the low scoring affair. After the Titans scored a second quarter touchdown, the Jaguars responded with a field goal of their own. The Titans went on to end the first half with two field goals of their own, giving the Titans a 12-3 halftime lead. The Titans scored the only points of the third quarter with a Ryan Succop field goal, obtaining the Titans a 3 point lead. The Jaguars mounted a comeback by scoring a touchdown with 10:48 left after an exchange error between Mariota and Henry. The rest of the quarter was back and forth with no scoring until the Jaguars got the ball with under a minute left. On the first play of the drive, Bortles dropped back and overthrew his intended receiver but hit Kevin Byard in the numbers! Byard’s interception gave the Titans their first playoff appearance since 2008!

The Titans first round matchup was against the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City. At near zero degree temperature, the Chiefs absolutely imposed their will on the Titans. The Chiefs seemingly drove up and down the field every possession. The Chiefs took a 22-3 lead into halftime. The game was over, right? How could a team that has not appeared in a playoff game in a decade make one of the greatest comebacks in playoff history? (Continued on page 8)

The Titans defensive line warm up for their “win and you are in” game against Jacksonville.

Well, the Titans came onto the field and drive down the field to score a touchdown to bring it to a twelve point game. The Titans defense then stepped up to force a punt from the “unstoppable” Kansas City offense to give the Titans a chance. The Titans took the chance and ran with it as they scored on a rushing touchdown to bring the lead down to 21-16 after a failed two-point conversion. All of the sudden, it was a close game again! The Titans forced the Chiefs to punt again on the ensuing possession! The Titans had the ball with a chance to win the game! The Titans drove down the field, and Mariota fired a dime to Eric Decker for a touchdown and the lead! The Titans failed to convert the two point conversion, so the Titans were only up by one with 6:06 left in the game. The Chiefs offense sputtered again as they were forced to punt again! All the Titans had to do to advance was get one first down to win the game, but chaos ensued on the very next play, causing pandemonium. Derrick Henry was handed the ball and FUMBLED the football! The Chiefs’ Derrick Johnson picked the ball up and raced down the sideline for a touchdown! The Chiefs’ sideline was going crazy and the broadcaster Sean McDonough’s voice cracked, causing one of the biggest plays in playoff history, but there was one small problem. The replay clearly showed Henry’s bottom on the ground with the ball still in possession. The Titans still had the lead! On third down, Derrick Henry broke a 20 yard run, clinching the game for the Titans! The Titans won a playoff game for the first time in 14 years! The next week did not go well for the Titans, though. The Titans were dominated from beginning to end as they lost to the Patriots by a final score of 35-14. Titans have turned their attention to next year as they hope to sustain the same success they had this year. The Titans are bringing in an entire new coaching staff to help deal with the talent that the Titans are still developing. The expectations are high going into next year, but the future is bright in Nashville!

The Titans offense are taking their final snaps and preparations for

their final regular season game against

the Jaguars.

Let’s be honest - almost all of us have been let down on Valentine’s Day. We expect to have the perfect date, perfect presents, and the perfect boy/girl. Although all of that would be nice, it might not be a true reality for a lot of us. A poll was taken of what people would expect or what they want to get on Valentine’s Day.

- The government shutdown of January 2018 only lasted three days. But why has the government shut down? Congress could not agree on a bill for the funding of young undocumented immigrants. Eventually, Democrats buckled and settled on a short-term spending bill.

Oprah Winfrey for 2020?

- Rumors had been swirling around about icon Oprah Winfrey running for the 2020 presidential election. The rumors ran rampant when her partner, Stedman Graham, said that she would “absolutely do it.” And people even further speculated that Winfrey would run after her Golden Globe speech. She has put these rumors to rest after claiming that it’s not something that interests her.

Dear Campbell,

What is the most valuable thing that you have learned in high

school? I am a freshman and it feels pointless.

Sincerely,

Wondering Freshman

Dear Wondering Freshman,

Being that I am a chicken, we had a completely different

education system. I grew up pecking at food and dirt, but if there is

one thing in life and school I learned, it was to always hold on to the

lessons you learn and the good people you meet. For those are the

people who are hard to come by in life. Enjoy your high school

experience, take time for yourself, and have fun with what you do!

Never take anything for granted!

Sincerely,

Campbell

Though St. Valentine is commonly known for being a priest who performed illegal marriages, St. Valentine’s Day was signified as a romantic holiday in 1382. Knights would give beautiful maidens roses and other assortments of flowers, but chocolate was too precious around this time. Skip ahead 500 years to the 1840s and you get Cupid’s Golden era. Richard Cadbury, scion of a British chocolate manufacturing company, decided to test his skills. He created a new variety of chocolate called “eating chocolate.” He did this by extracting pure cocoa from whole beans, which produced a more palatable drinking chocolate. This process produced lots of excess cocoa butter, and that’s how the eating chocolate was made. He wrapped them in beautifully decorated boxes and sold them to the public. After that, it just became a tradition that is still booming today!

Finding the perfect date is tough for many people, especially around Valentine's Day, and on top of that, those who do find dates oftentimes wonder what to do and how to behave. Here at Community High School, it has come to our attention that readers may need some help in this area, so here are some things that you should never, ever, no matter what, under any circumstance, without a doubt, for any reason do on a date:

● Do not… Discuss previous relationships. For example: “Wow, that dress you’re wearing really reminds me of my last girlfriend.”

● Do not… Pick your nose or sniff your armpits.

For example:

●● Do not… Try and make corny jokes.

For example: “Is your name Google cause you’re the one I’m searching for.”

● Do not… Eat like a pigFor example:

● Do not… Bring your mom along. For example:

One heroic man named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “In

the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies but the

silence of our friends.” Every year, citizens across the United States

celebrate the life achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King was

an influential American civil rights leader. He was a social activist

and a Baptist minister. King was known for his campaigns for racial

equality in the United States regardless of anyone’s racial background.

He brought hope and healing to many American people.

In 1963, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his most well known

speech, “I Have a Dream,” in front of a massive group of civil rights

marchers. He wanted to make his dream, of which people from all

racial backgrounds come together, become a reality. His speech

influenced the Federal Government to take more actions for racial

equality. The Civil Rights Movement was active from the mid 1950’s

until his death on April 4th, 1968.

Shortly after his death, a petition was started for his birthday to

become a federal holiday in the United States. Over six million people

signed the petition. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was first observed in

1986. American citizens are called to this holiday to celebrate values of

equality and tolerance of one another. It is the people’s holiday of all

races and religions to the fulfillment of his dream!

On January 26, Community High School hosted its annual basketball homecoming festivities. The ceremony commenced with the court of honor, which included CDC students Nathan Baliff, Case Grizzle, Josue Juarez, Prince Atonsa, Ashley Campbell, and Madison Messick. Shortly following was the recognition of the Community High School band, cheerleading squad, and boys and girls basketball teams, which preceded the recognition of the 2018 homecoming court; Preston Bennett and Kamryn Fisher were announced King and Queen. Thanks to all the people who attended and contributed hard work to make Homecoming possible!

One of Community High School’s band members, Mackenzie Newkirk, commented,”It was a huge success! It helped us raise money for new marching band uniforms; I want to say a huge thanks to all that participated!” The Band raised a staggering $2,400 dollars from the run!

Drama Club

Advisor: Mr. Davis

Officers: Alyssa Amos - President; Jesse Matthews - Vice President; Maria Rodriguez - Secretary; Jessie

Dussek - Scribe; Gabby Hunt - Scribe

Do you love to act? Do you like to talk about varieties of plays and musicals? If so, Drama Club is

just the right club for you! Students in Drama Club have an opportunity to express themselves, and they

get to learn what it is like to walk in another character’s shoes. At every meeting, members can answer

theatre related question to win prizes such as candy, posters, and a bunch of other neat things. Members

also discuss updates for upcoming plays.

Theatre students went on a field trip to go see The Greatest Showman on January 24th.

Community High School Freshmen and Sophomores will have the opportunity to see the play “Rumors” on

March 15th as well. They will also have a public performance on March 16th-17th at 7 PM in the

auditorium; the admission will be $5. An End-Of-The-Year show banquet will take place at the end of May.

ACT time is fast approaching. All juniors will be taking the ACT on March 20th. I would like to take just a minute to say a few things about the test... ACT = MONEY The ACT has come to represent a lot more than just a test; it opens doors for opportunities to attend college and universities. It allows for more options within the armed forces as well. ACT is now is being used by companies like Bridgestone, Nissan, and Frito Lay to influence what levels and career advancements employees can be considered for. The test can result in students getting paid to go to college! Just this last week, I was speaking with a parent of a graduate from last year whose son is going to TCAT in Dickson to study Diesel Mechanics. The father shared that his son’s entire tuition was paid for, and he would be receiving back a check for several hundreds of dollars.

Many individuals think ACT is only about measuring “how smart someone is.” While academics are a component being measured, the ACT also measures your ability to think, rationalize, and interpret. Many of the tasks are taught in middle school and early high school. I encourage you to use your time wisely in the coming weeks. Take a few minutes to review the ACT tips and strategy lessons from your teachers and workbooks. This can mean BIG dollars! -Dr. Ralston
