VIII. Memorials A. CLERGY Armstrong, James R. James Robert "Bob" Armstrong, 73, of Wabash, Indiana, died July 13, 2011, at Autumn Ridge Healthcare Center in Wabash. He was born September 2, 1937, in Crestwood, Kentucky, to James H. and Christine (Waldridge) Armstrong. Bob was a 1955 graduate of Lagro High School and received an associate degree from the University of Maryland. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, serving in Germany two years and was named Airman of the Month twice. He married Carolyn Thompson in Lincolnville, Indiana, on February 15, 1958. Bob worked at Honeywell/Markhon in Wabash for 15 years, for the U.S. Dept. of Defense for 23 years, receiving several certificates for his outstanding work, was a pastor in the United Methodist Church North Indiana Conference for 18 years and was the director of the lay speakers of the Huntington District. He was also a licensed auctioneer for 30 years. He was a member of the Lagro United Methodist Church for 50 years, serving in all offices of the church for 40 years working with youth and was an adult Sunday school teacher for 20 years. He was very active in the Lagro Community for 40 years, a past member and past Master of the Tuscan Masonic Lodge #143 in Lagro, a charter member of the Lagro Lions Club and was a member of the Lagro Fire Dept. for 30 years, serving as chief for five years. He was also a member of the Lagro Library Board, was a life member of American Society Control, a life member of the National Transportation Society and a roaster for the Wabash Jaycees. He was an avid bowler for many years, enjoyed fishing, hunting and working on his computer. He was also a Purdue, Colts and Reds fan. He is survived by wife, Carolyn Armstrong of Wabash; three nephews and one niece. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 16, 2011, with Rev. Rick Borgman officiating. James was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, serving as a medic in the European Theater. In 1956, he became a United Methodist Minister and served until his retirement in 1985. He also supervised and oversaw lay speakers. His hobbies included cutting and polishing stones for use in jewelry and making stained glass decorative pieces and pictures. Survivors include his spouse, Berniece (Blanton) Bastain of Jasonville, whom he married on July 7, 1946; son, James E. Bastain II of Indianapolis; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, Christopher and Ashley Bastain, Dustin and Skylair Bastain and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Lee Bastain Campbell. A memorial service was held January 21, 2012, at the Nine Mile United Methodist Church with Pastor John Pierce officiating. Bonham, Barbara Anne Carlson, Nancy L. Bonham, and Rebecca S. Manifold; and sons, Paul C. and Rex W. Bonham; and 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Rev. Bonham was preceded in death by his son, Mark L. Bonham. Services were October 11, 2011, at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church. Burial was at Washington Park North Cemetery, with military honors.

Armstrong, James R.

James Robert "Bob" Armstrong, 73, of Wabash, Indiana, died July 13, 2011, at Autumn Ridge Healthcare Center in Wabash. Bredemeier, George

George F. Bredemeier of Pensacola, Florida, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died June 28, 2011. Survivors include: his wife, Janice Bredemeier. George Bredemeier served Indiana churches at Orland-Nevada Mills, Galveston, Fort Wayne First and then served as a Chaplain in the U.S. Navy. He retired in 1976.

Byrne, Herbert

Herbert Winston Byrne, Sr., 93, retired minister and educator died on Aug 5, 2011. Born in Mobile, Alabama, he was the son of the late Peter Cornelius and Emma Cornelia Loving Byrne. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nelle Taulbee Byrne; a son, Herbert "Bert" Byrne, Jr.; and a sister, Annie Laurie Westerfield. Dr. Byrne pursued ministerial studies at Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary during which time he pastored a four-point United Methodist Circuit in Preachersville, Kentucky. Later he transferred to the Alabama-West Florida Conference where he served several pastorates from 1941 to 1949. While studying to receive his M.S. degree and Ed.D. in educational administration, philosophy and psychology, he served a church in Canton, Illinois. In 1953, Dr. Byrne assumed the position of Chairman of the Department of Christian Education at Western Evangelical Seminary near Portland, Oregon. In 1955, he was called to be the Academic Dean and Professor of Education at Fort Wayne Bible College in Fort Wayne, Indiana, shortly after he assumed the position of

Academic Dean of Huntington College in Huntington, Indiana. In 1965, he moved to Wilmore, Kentucky, where he chaired the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Asbury College and served as Acting Dean at Asbury Theological Seminary and Head of the Department of Christian Education. Dr. Byrne shared his experiences and knowledge in a variety of administrative settings: Treasurer of the Evangelical Teacher Placement Agency, Member of the Board of Directors of the Evangelical Teacher Training Association, Dean of Seminar for Improvement of Instruction, Field Consultant for Gospel Light Publications, Scripture Press Publications and David C. Cook Publishing Company and author of several books. He was a tennis and table tennis champion in singles and doubles in college and seminary and won many tournaments later in life. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Byrne Manion, son-in-law, James Edward Manion, one grandson and two great grandsons. A memorial service was held on August 16, 2011, at Wilmore United Methodist Church followed by a committal service in the Wilmore cemetery.

Case, Edwin Dr. Edwin Max Case, 72, passed away January 9, 2012. He was born in his grandmother's home April 8, 1939, in Chelan, Washington, to Olin S. Case and Edna Mae (Stinemates) who preceded him in death. He graduated salutatorian at Richland High School (WA) and then attended DePauw University, graduating in 1961. He received a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Drew Theological Seminary and a Doctorate from Butler University and Christian Theological Seminary. He married Ann Louise Hutchins in August 24, 1963, in Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Case served as a senior pastor at several Indiana Methodist churches over the years. His principal vocation was as educator and administrator. He taught at Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory School from 1976-1981, and then took an administrative position at the University of Indianapolis in their Department of University Advancement. He finished his career serving as Executive Director of Indiana Network for Higher Education Ministries. Max loved to travel

and teach. He taught a class focusing on spirituality in films at various congregations, public libraries and elder hostel programs. He was an avid patron of the Eiteljorg Museum in downtown Indianapolis and served as a volunteer there. Likewise, he served on the Christian Theological Seminary Alumni Association board. Max is survived by his two sons, Marcus and Michael (Jennifer) Case and three grandchildren. A memorial service was held on January 17, 2012, at North United Methodist Church, Indianapolis, Indiana. Burial service was on January 18, 2012, at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Lebanon, Indiana.

Cheesman, John Rev. John A. Cheesman, 79, of Greenwood, passed away on June 14, 2011, after several years of deteriorating health. John Alva Cheesman was born on March 31, 1932, to Clinton and Dorothy Cheesman on a farm outside of Hartford City. John grew up in Hartford City and graduated from Hartford City High School in 1951. After receiving the call to the ministry, John attended Indiana Central College and received his degree in 1955. He went on to attend and graduate from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, with his bachelor of Divinity degree. He was ordained in 1958. The Rev. Cheesman served the Lord in the ministry for nearly fifty years serving E.U.B. and United Methodist churches throughout Indiana. He began his ministry at Calvary United Methodist Church (Dunkirk) and subsequently served Colonial United Methodist (Anderson), Smith Valley United Methodist, First United Methodist

(Martinsville), Temple United Methodist (Terre Haute), Central United Methodist (Evansville) and Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin before retiring. After retirement in 1997, the Rev. Cheesman served as the visitation pastor at Edgewood United Methodist on the Indianapolis southside. The Rev. Cheesman was a former State Lieutenant Governor of the Kiwanis, an organization he was a member of for 42 years. He was an ardent supporter of Christian youth and was a longtime summer camp director for many United Methodist Church camps. He led several mission trips to the Holy Land and other missionary lands. He had served on the board of the Indiana United Methodist Credit Union, as well as various boards and service organizations in every community he lived. He is survived by his wife, Alberta Moist Cheesman; three sons, John (Karen) Cheesman of Carmel, David (Tammy) Cheesman of Martinsville, and Thomas (Mandi) Cheesman of Carmel; four granddaughters and two grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Dora Belle Cheesman. A memorial service was held June 18, 2011, at Grace United Methodist Church officiated by the Revs. Todd Outcalt and Andy Kinsey. Burial was at Gardens of Memory in Muncie, Indiana.

Coahran, John Rev. John Coahran of Crossville, Tennessee, 74, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died Monday, December 12, 2011. He was born June 20, 1937, to John and Dorothy (Gold) Coahran. He was preceded in death by his first son, John David. He served Indiana churches for 42 years at 25th Street and First in Terre Haute, Emmanuel in Huntingburg, Meadowdale and Broad Ripple in Indianapolis, Silver Street in New Albany and Main Street in Boonville. He retired in 1999 and with his wife, Beverly, moved to Crossville, Tennessee. Survivors include: his wife of 55 years, Beverly; two sons, Brian of New Albany, Indiana, and David of Spicer, Minnesota; and four grandchildren. A memorial service was held at First UM Church in Crossville on December 17, 2011.

Dixon, Glendon Rev. Glendon Carl Dixon Sr., 84, of Brookville, died Saturday, January 14, 2012, at his residence. Born August 6, 1927, in Ashburn, Missouri, he was the son of the late Jesse Dow and Trulla Bernadine (Troutner) Dixon. On May 6, 1956, he and the former Quannah Scott were united in marriage, and she survives. He was retired from the United States Navy, having served as a Master Chief Electronics Technician for 25 years. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he became a United Methodist Minister with the South Indiana Conference for over 20 years. He was Pastor at the Whitcomb United Methodist Church from June 1974 till June 1976, and he last served at the Brick Chapel and Union Chapel United Methodist Churches in Greencastle for eight years prior to his retirement in 1990. Besides Quannah, his wife of over 55 years, survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Faith (Brent) Riehle of Brookville and Deborah (Lamar) Tindle of Anderson; two

sons Chris (Gloria) Dixon of Brookville and Paul (Tina) Dixon of Bainbridge; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Glendon Carl Dixon Jr., who died October 24, 1998. Kevin Waltz officiated the memorial service at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home in Brookville, Indiana. Burial with full military graveside honors followed in Maple Grove Cemetery in Brookville.

Emerick, Samuel The Rev. Samuel St. John Emerick, 96, of Port Charlotte, Florida died on Friday, January 13, 2012, at Fawcett Memorial Hospital, Port Charlotte. Sam was born September 5, 1915, near Comp's Church, Somerset County, Pennsylvania to Louis and Maud Emerick. Sam was a retired minister in the North Indiana Conference, The United Methodist Church, where he served parishes in Philadelphia, Kendallville, Wabash, Decatur and Bluffton, Indiana. From 1957-1973, Sam was the Director of the Yokefellow Institute, a church renewal center on the campus of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. Sam served a year at the Eli Lilly Endowment in Indianapolis, Indiana. He then served four years as Adjunct Professor of Church Renewal at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. Upon moving to Port Charlotte in 1978, he served part-time on the staff of the Port Charlotte United Methodist Church. During a conference on poverty in 1965, Sam was profoundly influenced by Clarence Jordan of

Koinonia Farm, Americus, Georgia. In the years following that conference, Sam and several other visionaries continued to meet, eventually organizing an international board of directors which gave birth to Habitat for Humanity. Sam was elected chairman, serving for four years. While living in Florida, he was instrumental in forming Habitat affiliates in Lee County, Collier County, Sarasota County and Charlotte County (whose center is named in his honor). Sam is survived by his wife, Eleanor, of Boonsboro, Maryland; three sons, Craig Emerick and wife, Trudy, of Dallas, Texas; John Emerick and wife, Elaine, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; Stephen Emerick and wife, Debbie, of Centerville, Ohio; seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren. In 2010, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Mattie Lou "Patsy" Emerick.

A service of worship celebrating the life of Samuel Emerick was held on February 11, 2012, in the Town Hall at South Port Square, Port Charlotte, Florida.

Gierhart, Bernard Bernard Willis Gierhart of Indianapolis, a retired Elder of the Indiana Conference and father-in-law of the Rev. James M. Evans, Jr., pastor of Crescent Avenue UMC in Fort Wayne, died Tuesday, April 24, 2012. Dr. Gierhart served Indiana churches at Howe Parish, Monroe, Muncie Gethsemane and Hammond First. He also served as Superintendent of the Elkhart and Fort Wayne Districts of the former North Indiana Conference. A memorial service was held May 12, 2012 at Bethel United Methodist Church, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Grady, Debra Rev. Debra Jean Stanfield Grady, 60, died April 16, 2012. She was former pastor of St. Paul United Methodist Church and executive director of Brightwood Community Center. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., National Council of Negro Women and many other religious and civic organizations. Survivors include brother, Anthony Stanfield; special mother and father, Curtis and Elizabeth Grady, Sr.; aunts, uncles and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and the St. Paul Church family. Services were April 21, 2012, in St. Paul United Methodist Church.

Grayless, Timothy Tim Grayless, 59, of Rossville, died on Friday, July 15, 2011, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. Born September 27, 1951, in Terre Haute, he was the son of the late Orville and Anna (Head) Grayless. He was a 1969 graduate of Garfield High School and received an associate degree from Ivy Tech in Electronics Technology. Mr. Grayless served in the Navy during Vietnam. He loved fishing, mushroom hunting and the Green Bay Packers. He was a Computer Tech at Indiana State University and Purdue University for ten years and was a local pastor at Jefferson, Hope, Michigantown, Leiters Ford and Monterey United Methodist Churches for the past ten years. He was a member of the Rossville United Methodist Church. He served as a volunteer chaplain in Clinton County, was a member of Burning Hearts and served in the Emmaus Community. He married Doreen McCollough on Aug. 15, 1998. She survives in Rossville. Surviving with his wife are one son, Andy Wilson (wife, Shandi) of Lafayette; two daughters, Megan Wilson of Rossville and Erin Wilson of Palo Alto, California; four sisters, Lou Anne Burns, Teressa Grayless, Beth Grayless and Mary Grayless; and two brothers, Junior Grayless and Richard Grayless. Also preceding in death are a daughter, Tammy Sue, and a brother, Greg. A memorial service was held July 20, 2011, at Rossville United Methodist Church with pastors Rick Jones, Carl Leth and Steven Rundel officiating.

Henschen, Fred Rev. Dr. Fred L. Henschen, 76, beloved husband of the late Jane Henschen, dear father of Debora (Gerald) Lopez, Steven (Betty) Henschen, Cheryl (John) Jester, Philip (Sharon) Henschen, Mike Henschen and Caroline (Shane) Glasgow, loving grandfather of 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, passed away Sunday, June 26, 2011, at his residence. A memorial service was held July 1, 2011, at John Wesley United Methodist Church, Cincinnati Ohio.

Hoadley, John Rev. John English Hoaldy of Franklin, Indiana, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died Oct. 5, 2011. He served churches in Indiana at Mt. Zion-Buck Creek, Rising Sun, Batesville, New Palestine, Waldron, Indianapolis Broad Ripple Associate, Osgood, Springs Valley, Lockerbie and Simpson Chapel-Stinesville. He also served from 1977 to 1985 in the Indiana Department of Aging and Community Services and from 1985 to 1993 as a Senior Citizens Chaplain at Riley-Lockerbie Ministries Association. Survivors include: his wife, Joann Selle Hoadley; children, Rebecca Jane Yamada, Daniel Selle Hoadley and James Douglas Hoadley; and two grandchildren. A Service of Remembrance and Celebration was held at the Wright Chapel at the Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin on October 12, 2011, with the Rev. Andy Kinsey officiating.

Hook, James Rev. James Hooks, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference died December 19, 2011. He was born December 8, 1929, to Ralph and Caroll (Schlagenhauf) Hook in Bluffton, Indiana. He graduated from Bluffton High School, North Central College, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and De Paul University. While at North Central College he met Mary Helen Naffziger. They wed on August 23, 1952, and celebrated 59 years of marriage. He is survived by his wife, Mary, four children: James, John, Matthew, and Mary Elise and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, and two grandchildren. A memorial service was held December 23 at Horizons of Faith United Methodist Church in Indianapolis. Burial followed in Old Salem Cemetery.

Jackson, Kenneth Rev. Kenneth Jackson of Monroeville, 86, retired pastor of the Indiana Conference, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011. Survivors include his wife, Frieda Key Jackson of Monroeville; children, Tamyra R. Jackson of Fort Wayne, Gregory A. (Robin) Jackson of Helena, Montana, Kevin L. (Nikki) Jackson of Fort Wayne and Kenna L. Jackson of Fort Wayne; plus many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also was preceded in death by his former wife, Betty Lou Jackson in 2000. Jensen, Jerold Rev. Jerold John Jensen, 82, of W. Harrison, Indiana, passed away December 10, 2011, at Ridgewood Health Campus in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Born December 22, 1928, in Grantsburg, Wisconsin, he was the son of the late John Ernest and Mable (Gronlund) Jensen. The U.S. Navy Veteran of WWII married Wilma Schutte in Webster, Wisconsin August 5, 1950. He recently retired as pastor of Macedonia Christian Church where he ministered for the past ten years. Rev. Jensen previously pastored at Elnora United Methodist Church, College Comer United Methodist Church and retired from Rockdale United Methodist Church. Prior to his ordained ministry. Jerry Jensen was the Executive Director with Youth for Christ International for 20 years as well as the State Director in Wisconsin. He loved fishing, hunting, reading, studying and spending time with his family. He loved to sing, which he was very good at, and aired on television in Ironwood, Minnesota, at news time bringing "Thought to Live By."

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Wilma Jensen; sons Steven (Tamie) Jensen of Detroit Lake, Minnesota, Paul (Dori) Jensen of Rhinelander, Wisconsin and David (Susan) Jensen of Huntsville, Alabama. He will also be missed by 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Linda (Mark) Hendrickson, son John Jensen and granddaughter Selah Jensen. A memorial service was held December 15, 2011, followed by military services at Macedonia Christian Church in Okeana, Ohio, with Pastor Scott Holland officiating.

Jones, Jeffrey Rev. Jeffery C. Jones, 68, of LaPorte, Indiana, went home to be with the Lord on August 9, 2011, at his home. He was born on May 10, 1943, in East Chicago, Indiana, son of the late John B. and Suzhana (Holland) Jones. He was married on September 18, 1972, in Bartow, Florida, to Dorothy M. Jones (Anders). Jeffery was a retired pastor for the United Methodist Church. He graduated from Oliver P. Morton High School in Hammond, Indiana receiving his B.S. in Social Service from Troy State University in Montgomery, Alabama and his MDIV from Candler School of Theology at Emery University in Atlanta, Georgia. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Jones; his daughter, Jennifer (Eric John) Culp of Mishawaka, Indiana; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Celebration of Life Service was held August 13, 2011, at Door Village United Methodist Church with Rev. Mark Brock, Pastor Billy Nickrand and Elder Eddy Scott

officiating. Interment followed in the Door Village Cemetery.

Kenline, Bruce The Rev. Bruce W. Kenline, 89, Bluffton, passed away on November 18, 2011, at River Terrace Estates. He was born February 5, 1922, in Huntington, Indiana, to Paul W. and Mabel (Nave) Kenline. He married Jeannette A. (Hafer) on August 9, 1947, and she preceded him in death on May 29, 2011. He graduated from East Rockcreek School in 1940, attended Indiana University and later graduated from Taylor University with a Bachelor’s Divinity Degree. He also earned his M.D.V. from Anderson University. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran having served our country from Sept. 15, 1942, to March 7, 1946, and was honorably discharged with the rank of Hospital Apprentice First Class. He was

a member of the American Legion in Florida. He pastored in United Methodist Churches in Tocsin, Selma and Greentown. He retired from Greentown United Methodist Church in 1987. From 1987 to 1994, he served as a missionary with Chinese Overseas Christian Ministry (COCM). During that time, he taught Bible education in Russia. He was also involved with COPA in the Dominican Republic. Survivors include three sons, Greg Kenline (wife, Rhonda) of Albion, Kim Kenline (wife, Janice) of Ossian, Scott Kenline (wife, Phyllis) of Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a great-grandson. A memorial service was held November 21, 2011, at Thoma/Rich, Chaney and Lemler Funeral Home, Bluffton, with Pastor Gary Aupperle officiating. Burial followed in Markle Cemetery with military honors.

Lacy, Donald Dr. Donald Lacy was born on January 4, 1933, in Stoney Creek Township of Henry County (Indiana) to Charles and Marian (Walradth) Lacy. He attended the Blountsville Elementary School, then his family moved to Delaware County (Indiana); there he graduated from Center (Wapahani) High School in 1950. In 1954, he graduated from Ball State University. Also in 1954, he was baptized and received into full membership of the High Street United Methodist Church in Muncie, Indiana. He was a social studies and English teacher at the secondary level in Jay County, Indiana (Redkey and Dunkirk) for three years. He graduated from Christian Theological Seminary in 1961 and received a Doctor of Ministry degree in 1976. His doctoral project was "Preaching as a Lay/Clergy Event" and involved key laity at Seymour. Professionally, Dr. Lacy can be described as teacher, pastor, author, ecumenist, theologian and consultant. Personally, he prized being a husband, father and grandfather. He

became a pastor of Philadelphia UMC in Hancock County, Indiana, in 1959 and proceeded to serve appointments in the pastoral ministry until retirement in 2003. He served the following churches: Madison Street UMC, Kokomo Trinity, College Avenue (Associate) in Muncie, Hagerstown First, Union Chapel and Meadowdale in Indianapolis, Seymour First, Evansville Saint James East, Walkerton and Yorktown. In 1959, he married Dorothy Marie Thomas of rural Selma, Indiana. They had four daughters: Anne Marie, Donna Jean, Sharon Elizabeth and Martha Elaine. He has been a member of numerous organizations and civic activities. They have included Phi Delta Kappa, Pi Gamma Mu, Rotary (President), Kiwanis (Indianapolis Downtown), Lions (President), Optimist, Scottish Rite (Indianapolis), York Rite (Muncie), York Rite College (Fort Wayne), Mizpah Shrine (Fort Wayne), International Order of Saint Luke the Physician (Chaplain), Ecumenical Society of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Board of Directors) and Columbia Club. Rev. Dr. Lacy is survived by his wife, Dorothy, daughters Donna (Terry) Beyl, Sharon Lacy, Martha (Jeff) Graham and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Anne Marie Lacy, his parents and a brother. A Celebration of Life service was held at Yorktown UMC March 5, 2012, with burial at Riverview Cemetery, Seymour, Indiana. Officiating were LaMar Imes, Gary Schaar, Al Kundenreich and Father Dennis Goth.

Lamb, James James A. Lamb, 68, Kokomo, passed away on Sunday, March 11, 2012, at Waterford Long Term Care. He was born May 17, 1943, in Henry County, Indiana, to Richard and Thelma (Lammott) Lamb. He married Linda Felty in 1964, and she survives. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1961 and was a member of 4-H and a reporter for Rural Youth Officers. He was pastor of Dublin Methodist Church in 1966. He lived in Marion, Indiana, for 27 years before moving to Kokomo in 2000. While in Marion, he attended Indiana Wesleyan University and College Wesleyan Church. He attended the United Methodist Church's Course of Study to become a minister and their License to Preach course. He also led a weekly church service at Wesleyan Health Care. After moving to Kokomo, he became associate pastor for St. Luke's United Methodist Church and had worked for Sunset Memory Garden Funeral Home and Cemetery. He enjoyed golfing and fishing and cherished his family. In addition to his wife of 48 years, he is survived by two sons, Terry (Debbie) Lamb, Sharpsville, and Mike (Jenny) Lamb, Gas City; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother; and one brother, Steve (Tami) Lamb. He was preceded in death by his father. A celebration of life was held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church on March 15, 2012, in Kokomo. Burial was in Sunset Memory Garden Cemetery.

Lapham, Thomas Thomas Lapham of Indianapolis, 57, former local pastor of the Indiana Conference, died April 4, 2012. He was born on February 16, 1955, to Dale and Mary Lapham in Iowa. In June 1998, he married Bonnie Lapham who survives. He is also survived by a son, Joel Lapham. Services were private. From 1992 to 2010, he served Indiana churches at Alquina, Ogilville-Ohio Chapel, Newberry and Lizton.

Mattox, Alvin L. Alvin Lincoln Mattox, 88, passed away July 26, 2011, at Floyd Memorial Hospital. He was born on September 17, 1922, to George and Mary Faye Chenoweth Mattox in English, Indiana. He was an Army Veteran of WWII in which he received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. He was a retired mechanic and minister of 30 years of the United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Indiana Conference of United Methodist Church and Disabled American Veterans. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Phyllis Lippeatt Mattox; brother, Bruce Mattox; sister, Vivian Jackson. Survivors include his sons, Richard Mattox (Donna) of Charlestown, Indiana, Michael Mattox (Melanie) of Henryville, Indiana, and George Mattox, Sr. (Brenda) of New Albany, Indiana; daughters, Alice Sims (Gregg) of Winslow, Indiana and Sally Lasley (Norman) of Mt. Pleasant, Indiana; 12 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and one great-great

grandchild. A memorial service was held July 30, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Charlestown, with interment in the Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park.

Patrick, David The Rev. David Wilson Patrick, 46, of Lebanon, died Monday, Aug. 22, 2011, at his residence. Rev. Patrick was born August 19, 1965, in Evansville. He was the son of John R. and Brenda G. (Sweezer) Patrick. He was raised in Indiana, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1983. He joined the U.S. Army, serving his country from 1983 to 1984. Following his service to our country, he attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. He then went on to receive his master’s degrees in divinity and religious education at the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. Rev. Patrick married Marcy Lynn Patrick on November 4, 2000, in Rushville. She survives. He was first married to Rhonda R. Favors on June 14, 1986, in Boxley, and they divorced. He began his ministerial career as the youth pastor for Sydney First United Methodist Church in Sydney, Ohio. Moving back to Indiana, he then served a dual appointment at the Bath and Springfield United Methodist Churches. He became the associate

pastor for Richmond Central United Methodist Church. He was ordained a deacon in 1990 and an elder in 1994. His first appointment as senior pastor began at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Rushville. He then went to Mount Comfort United Methodist Church in Greenfield. From 2005 to the present, he has been senior pastor at Centenary United Methodist Church in Lebanon. Rev. Patrick was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and pastor. He had a great interest in history and the events that shaped the United States, as well as the history of religion. His hobbies included gardening — he took extreme pride in his roses — reading and watching John Wayne movies. He had a friendly and outgoing personality, was well-known in the community and was loved by his church family. Survivors include his wife, the Rev. Marcy L. Patrick of Lebanon; two daughters, Mary Kathleen (fiancé, Robert Bell) Patrick and Rebekah Rena Patrick, all of Lebanon; his parents, who reside in Sheridan; one sister, Melody S. (Jimmy) Bishop of Sheridan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Jill Patrick. A memorial service was held at Centenary United Methodist Church, Lebanon, August 27, 2011, with the Rev. John Groves and Bishop Michael Coyner officiating. A private family interment was held at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Hall.

Ruhl, Donald Rev. Donald L. Ruhl, 82, passed away on October 1, 2011, at Grace Village Retirement Center, Winona Lake, Indiana, where he and his wife, Sylvia, have resided for the past eight years. Don was born February 27, 1929, in Ossian, Indiana, to Benjamin and Jane Ruhl. He attended the first few years of grade school at Ossian before attending Hoagland High School and graduating from there in 1947. He completed the first term of college at Ball State Teachers College in Muncie, Indiana. On May 20, 1948, he married Sylvia Washler in the E. U. B. Church at Newville, Indiana, and she survives. They eventually became the parents of five children. Don received his B.A. degree from Manchester College and graduated from the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Naperville, Illinois. After seminary, Rev. Ruhl served churches in Indiana, including Teegarden, Tabor, Nappanee, Whiting, Logansport, Rensselaer and Auburn. While in Whiting, he received his M.A. from Valparaiso University, graduating in June of 1970, just as he began his ministry in Logansport. He officially retired from the

ministry in Rensselaer in 1991, but served many interims after that. His last ministerial duties included assisting Pastor Keith Schreffler at Main St. United Methodist Church, Logansport, with visitation of nursing homes and shut-in parishioners, up until approximately three years ago. Don organized and sang in the Cass County Men’s Chorus and was responsible for and participated in a choir at Grace Village Retirement Center, and also the “Men of Grace” quartet with his wife Sylvia being the accompanist. While still in Logansport, Rev. Ruhl served as Hospice chaplain at Memorial Hospital; he had previously also served on the Board at Memorial Hospital. Don directed and counseled camp for the mentally impaired at Epworth Forest in North Webster, Indiana, for 17 years. Don led church work camps to Farmington, and Espanola, New Mexico, Henderson Settlement and Red Bird Mission, Kentucky, Heifer Project in Oklahoma, and

Bashor Home, near Goshen, Indiana. He worked on various repair projects and worked in the woodshop at Grace Village, as well as enjoying his woodshop at home, where he made many projects over the years. Along with his faithful service to God and His church, Rev. Ruhl was well-known for his great sense of humor and his loyalty to the Chicago Cubs. Surviving are four sons: M. John (Linda), Rockford, Illinois, Don, Jr., of Logansport, Benjamin Max (Deb) Clarklake, Michigan, and Timothy Louis (Bobbie), Stuart, Florida, and one daughter, Jane Ann (John) Goodrich, Logansport. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Main Street United Methodist Church, Logansport, Indiana, on October 6, 2011, officiated by the Revs. Tom DeFries and Keith Schreffler. Burial followed at Newville Cemetery near Auburn, Indiana.

Saltzgaber, Gaylord Gaylord Miller Saltzgaber, 90, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away March 16, 2012, at Memorial Hospital in South Bend. Gaylord, or “Salty” as he came to be known, was born in Wyatt, Indiana, on Oct. 16, 1921, to Verlin and Erma (Lambert) Saltzgaber. Gaylord and his wife, Carol, were active members of Coalbush United Methodist Church in Mishawaka, and served many years as youth directors. After a 32-year career at the Mishawaka office of the South Bend Tribune, Gaylord and Carol felt the call to the ministry. He graduated from Bethel College and then earned a Master of Divinity degree from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart. He served Maple Grove United Methodist Church in New Carlisle, North Liberty United Methodist Church and Maple Grove United Methodist Church on New Road in South Bend. While serving the North Liberty church, Gaylord completed his doctorate in theology. Music always played a major role in Gaylord’s life. As children, he and his brother, Albin, played harmonica for a local radio station. When he attended Mishawaka High School

in the late ’30s, he formed a dance band, “Gale Lord and his Studies in Brown.” He graduated from MHS in 1940. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, where he put together another band, but eventually volunteered for the infantry and landed in Hiroshima two weeks after the bombing. He also served in the Philippines and earned a Bronze Star. Gaylord was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, the former Carol Parcell and grandson, Paul Saltzgaber. He is survived by his three children, Mark Saltzgaber (Connie), Amy Otto (Rich) and Wendy Grice (Garry); three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service for family and friends was held April 1, 2012, at Coalbush United Methodist Church in Mishawaka, Indiana.

Sands, Kendall Rev. Kendall Sands was born in Denver, Indiana, to Fred and Daisy Sands January 11, 1915, and passed away peacefully Dec. 17, 2011. He spent most of his youth in Michigan City, Indiana, except for four years spent on a farm in Michigan. After graduating from high school in 1933, he worked as a bookkeeper for a manufacturing company to save money for college. He entered Taylor University in 1938 and there he was “smitten” with a young woman, Lydia White. They were married in 1939 and were inseparable for the next 70 years until her death in 2009. He graduated from Valparaiso University in 1940 and began serving as a “traveling” minister at several small churches in northern Indiana. He and Lydia served these churches, sometimes two at a time and some with congregations as small as 5-10 people, with enthusiasm and humor, but mostly with a dedication to serve. He graduated from Garrett Theological Seminary with a Masters of Divinity degree in 1944 and this allowed him to start serving larger churches. In 1980, he retired to move to California to be close to his daughter

and grandchildren, but in 1990, he felt “called” to serve one more time and moved back to Indiana to minister another church. He finally and officially retired in 1994 and moved permanently to California. His quiet and faithful demeanor affected many people over the years and each congregation he served was sorry to see him move on. He was an accomplished woodworker, photographer, musician and writer. But most of all, he was one of the most truly spiritual people that we have ever known. He is survived by his daughter Lorrie Colborn, husband Jake, grandchildren Jeff (Brenda), James and Jessica Thorpe (Mike) and five great-grandchildren.

Shelton, Raymond Rev. Raymond Shelton of Washington, Indiana, 88, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, father of the Rev. Rodney Shelton, pastor of Hursttown UMC near Corydon and grandfather of the Rev. Michael R. Shelton, pastor of Baker Chapel UMC near Boonville, Indiana, in the Southeast District, died February 11, 2012. Raymond served churches in Indiana at Shelburn, Pleasantville, Hatfield, Geneva, Newberry, Letts, Patricksburg, Lincoln Hills Parish and retired in 1988. Survivors include his wife, Della (Allen) Shelton; a daughter, Carolyn Crafton of Indianapolis; sons, Larry (Barbara) Shelton of Hatfield, Billy (Lori) Shelton of Phoenix, Arizona, Rick (Annetta) Shelton of Merrillville and Rodney (Teresa) Shelton of English; 11

Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Reeve Township.

Singelstad, Steven Rev. Steven Singelstad of French Lick, Indiana, 57, part-time local pastor of Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church in French Lick (in the South District), died February 18, 2012. He served the Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church in French Lick and also was employed by Uebelhor and Sons in Jasper, Indiana. Survivors include: his wife, Carol Singelstad; daughters, Amanda (Joel) Dalton of West Baden, Ashley Singelstad of French Lick, Keyly (Tony) Watts of French Lick, Marny (Jason) Hammond of French Lick, Rachel (Jason) Russell of French Lick and April (David) Knieriem of Paoli, eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. A memorial service was held on February 23, 2012, at Mt. Lebanon UMC in French Lick with the Revs. Doug Finney and Charles Wilfong officiating. Burial followed at Ames Chapel Cemetery in Paoli, Indiana.

St. Angelo, George

On Sunday, March 4, 2012, the Rev. George August St. Angelo, Jr., a Naperville resident for 55 years, died after a long life of service that continued to his very last days. George St. Angelo was born on June 18, 1921 in Huntingburg, Indiana. After graduating from North Central College in 1943, he entered the United States Army where he served in the Signal Intelligence Corps during World War II. His ability as a German translator led him through the gates of Dachau concentration camp at its liberation, both to interrogate the Nazi guards and help administer medical care to the survivors—an experience that inspired his deep and lasting resolve to champion social justice. After the war, St. Angelo attended the London School of Economics. He returned to Naperville to obtain his degree in theology from the Evangelical Theological Seminary in preparation for Ordination into the Christian Ministry in 1949. On November 8, 1949, in Detroit, he married 1948 North Central College graduate Betty Jane

Gibson, his wife and partner in all endeavors for 62 years. Between 1949 and 1955, St. Angelo was appointed to serve in several rural Evangelical United Brethren pastorates in Northern Indiana, his final appointment being to the larger urban New York Street Evangelical United Brethren Church in Indianapolis, where he served for five years. In 1955, St. Angelo became the first Chaplain of North Central College, where he served until 1966. He is survived by his beloved wife, Betty of Naperville, daughter Becky (husband Ken) McCabe of DeKalb, daughter Tina (husband Steve) Wetzel of Naperville, and son Bill (wife, Conni) St. Angelo of Flower Mound, Texas; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held March 31, 2012, at Wentz Hall, North Central College, Naperville, Illinois.

Stevenson, Doris Doris E. Stevenson, 78, of Georgetown, retired local pastor of the Indiana Conference, died July 19, 2011. Survivors include: husband, Elza Stevenson; eight children, Mark Kendall, Bonnie Harden, Rheunna Osgood, Leeland Stevenson, Debbie Scoggins, Denise Clan, Annette Reynolds and Alicia Coop; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held July 22, 2011, at the Swarens Funeral Home with burial in Paoli.

Swanson, Marvin Rev. Marvin Swanson of St. Peters, Missouri, 76, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died November 19, 2011. Born in Chicago Heights, Illinois, of Olive and John Peter Swanson, Marvin graduated from Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights and furthered his education at Simpson College, Indiananola, Iowa, with a B.A. degree. From there, he earned a Master's Degree of Divinity and a Ph.D. from Boston University School of Theology in May of 1964. He spent most of his ministry in higher education as a chaplain and assistant dean at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, and Professor of Philosophy and Religion and as director of the Center for International Studies at Southeast Missouri State University at Cape Girardeau. He leaves his three children; Eric, Kirsten and Karen Swanson and five grandchildren. A memorial service was held November 23, 2011, in St. Charles, Missouri, followed by burial November 26, 2012, at Cedar Park Cemetery in Calumet Park, Illinois.

Walters, Jon Rev. Jon “Buddy” Walters of Choctaw, Mississippi, 72, a retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died December 26, 2011, in Indianapolis while visiting his daughter. He was born November 17, 1939, to Summer and Estelle Styron Walters, Sr., in Simpson County, Mississippi. Walters, a native of Forest Hill, Mississippi, served the Bloomington (Indiana) Church of the Cross, campus ministry at Indiana University, former South Indiana Conference Council on Ministries as a staff member, Oakland City Good Shepherd UMC, Indianapolis North UMC, Church of the New Covenant in Kenai, Alaska, executive director of the Mississippi United Methodist Choctaw Mission in Choctaw, Mississippi and pastor of the Green Hill and John Memorial UMCs in Mississippi. He was a classically trained, educated, talented musician and held two master’s degrees. He officially retired in 2010. Survivors include: wife, Mary Glynn (Lott) Walters; three children, Allyson, Summer and Jon; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Rev.

Summer Lewis Walters, Jr. A memorial service was held on January 14, 2012, at North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

Williams, Jacob C. Rev J. C. Williams of Muncie, Indiana, 93, retired clergy member of the Indiana Conference and noted African-American civil rights leader, died November 21, 2011. He is survived by sons, Charles (Chicago), James (Fort Wayne, Indiana), the Rev. Dr. Jacob, Jr. (Valparaiso, Indiana); daughters, Anna Hayden of Gary, Alice of Muncie; and many grandchildren. A memorial service was held March 31, 2012, at High Street United Methodist Church, in Muncie with the Rev. J.C. Williams, Jr., officiating and Indiana Bishop Mike Coyner giving the eulogy.

Woolever, Eugene Rev. Eugene W. Woolever, 84, a retired local pastor of Corunna, died July 17, 2011, at DeKalb Memorial Hospital in Auburn from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born July 30, 1926 in DeKalb County to Leal and Nellie (Long) Woolever and they have both preceded him in death. He married Anne “Christine” Conner on September 6, 1947 and she died January 15, 2000. Mr. Woolever worked for Kraft Foods in Kendallville for 18 years from 1966 until his retirement in 1984. Also in 1966 he began pastoring at Center Chapel United Methodist Church in Kendallville for 11 years then for Meese Chapel United Methodist Church in Auburn for 25 years. He was coordinator for the Northeast District United Methodist Work Camp. He also was a longtime farmer. He was a member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau and he was a 60-year member of Gideon’s International. Surviving are four children, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was

preceded in death by his parents and wife. A memorial service was held July 21, 2011, at First Christian Church in Kendallville, Indiana, with Dr. Thomas Clothier officiating. Burial followed in Sedan Cemetery, Corunna.

Atkins, Sybil Sybil Atkins, 96, of Franklin, died December 26, 2011, at Franklin United Methodist Community. She was born May 24, 1915, in Mansfield, Illinois, to Howard A. Swift and Clarice E. (Rowe) Swift. She married Arnold I. Atkins on February 17, 1933. She had been a resident of Franklin since 1989 and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin. She was a graduate of French Lick High School, earned an Associate Degree at Indiana Southeast and completed the Ministerial Course of Study at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary. She served as a United Methodist minister at Fairland, Indiana. She belonged to Eastern Star in Fairland and was a member of Phi Beta Psi sorority in Campbellsburg, Indiana. She and her husband were foster parents for children for several years and she was a pre-school and kindergarten teacher at Letts in the Greensburg, Indiana area. She taught Sunday School at various levels for 60+ years. She was a substitute teacher in West Washington schools in Campbellsburg, Indiana. She served as minister at Posey Chapel in Washington County, Indiana. She had a life-long love of education and learning. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles. Sybil is survived by three children, Joyce Utterback of Franklin, Sally Maudlin of Campbellsburg, and Jack Atkins of Plainfield; 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Arnold Atkins, a daughter, Judith Atkins and a son, Jimmie Atkins of Mitchell, Indiana. A memorial service was held December 30, 2011, in Wright Chapel at Franklin United Methodist Community, Franklin, Indiana. According to her wishes, her body was donated to IU School of Medicine - Anatomical Education.

Bayne, Jeanette Jeanette Onel Bayne, 85, of Osgood and widow of Rev. Paul Bayne, passed away February 24, 2012, at Manderly Health Care Center in Osgood. She was born April 25, 1926, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Garnet J. and Mae Hamm Bolt. She married Paul Ubele Bayne August 14, 1946; he preceded her in death June 26, 2002. She was a member of Pierceville United Methodist Church of Milan and was a teacher's aide at Jac-Cen-Del School System from 1965 to 1974. She had also volunteered at Jac-Cen-Del Elementary School. She was a past member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Napoleon, VFW Keene-Henneke Post #9987. She is survived by her son, Ricky (Pam) Bayne of Middletown, Ohio; daughter, Phyllis Buchanan of Fairfield, Ohio; sister, Janice McKenney of Shelbyville, Tennessee; three grandchildren, as well as five great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held February 27, 2012, at Pierceville United Methodist Church of Milan. Burial followed in Greendale Cemetery of Osgood.

Beach, Julie Julie Beach, wife of retired Associate Member, the Rev. Stephen Beach, died November 29, 2011. She was born September 7, 1938, to Marge and LeRoy DeHahn in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Upon graduation from East Grand Rapids High School, she began working in the banking industry. She married Stephen Beach on July 10, 1954. Together they were a team in each congregation they served, where she often became Steve’s administrative assistant. She was often called the “cookie lady,” because she always had cookies for everyone. Survivors include: her husband, Stephen; daughters, Sandy, Martha and Lori; son, Paul; five grandchildren; and three great-grand children. A memorial service was held December 2, 2011, in Cedar Springs, Michigan.

Berger, Geneva Geneva Berger of Fort Wayne, Indiana, 85, wife of the Rev. Dr. Hilbert J. Berger, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, and mother of the Rev. Daniel J. Berger, pastor of First UMC in West Lafayette, died September 30, 2011. She was born on April 28, 1926, in South Bend, Indiana. She graduated from Riley High School, South Bend; studied piano privately and at the LaSalle School of Music, South Bend, with additional piano studies at Chicago Conservatory of Music; and also attended Purdue University. She was an accomplished pianist and church organist and taught both instruments for several years. Survivors include: her husband of 67 years, the Rev. Dr. Hilbert J. Berger; son, the Rev. Daniel (Kelly) Berger of Lafayette; daughter, Rebecca (Terry) Zarnik of LaBelle, Florida; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas. A memorial service was held on October 6, 2011, at First Wayne Street UMC in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The Revs. Greg Enstrom and Jake Fisher officiated.

Bonewitz (Alstedt), Dorothy Dorothy Marie Bonewitz (Alstedt), 86, died June 26, 2011, at Greencroft Healthcare, Goshen, Indiana. She was married to the Rev. Robert Hall Bonewitz, who died in 1995. She then married John Alstedt, who died in 2010. She is survived by her children, Roberta K. (Steve) Anderson, Leesburg; Michael R. (Nancy) Bonewitz, Goshen; David P. (Anne) Bonewitz, Warsaw; Debora J. (Jim) Ellis, New Paris; and Nancy E. (Ken) Miller, Bourbon. A graveside service was held June 30, 2011, at Parks Cemetery in Bourbon, Indiana.

Bradley, Gladys Gladys Bradley of New Albany, 91, surviving spouse of the late Rev. Ray Bradley of the Indiana Conference, who died in 1971, died Wednesday, October 26, 2011. She retired from the former Old Breece Plywood Company in New Albany and was a member of Springdale UMC in Jeffersonville. Survivors include: her son, Robert L. Perkins (Alberta) of McRae, Arkansas; daughters, Mary (Rice) Goss (Kim) of Jeffersonville and Nancy (Rice) Coons Farnsley (Doug) of Jeffersonville; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held November 1, 2011, at the Farr Funeral Home in Sellersburg, Indiana, followed by burial in Greenlawn Cemetery in Greenville, Indiana.

Burchfield, Dorothy Dorothy M. Burchfield, 86, surviving spouse of the late Rev. Ray A. Burchfield, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011. There will be no memorial service. She donated her body to medical science according to her family. Survivors include: two sons, Dan (Karena) Burchfield of Fayetteville, Georgia, and Bob (Pam) Burchfield of Greenfield, Indiana; one daughter, Jane (Tony) Scheu of Evansville, Indiana; ten grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death in 1981 by her husband of 40 years, the Rev. Ray Burchfield, who served with Dorothy at his side in United Methodist churches in Arcadia, Cicero, Muncie, Anderson, Kokomo, Whiteland, Brookville, Greenfield and Sullivan (all in Indiana). She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Judy Burchfield, and a great-grandson.

Clements, Jesse

Jesse Clements, spouse of Rev. Mollie Clements of the Indiana Conference, died peacefully on February 16, 2012, in his home. He was born September 8, 1930, to Chester and Rosa Dee Clements of Houston, Texas. Jesse was a man of faith. He believed faith renders itself in service, so challenged church structures to relevant social action. Jesse was a practical adventurer. He was a journeyman carpenter and paid his way through college by travelling 4000 miles from Texas to Anchorage each summer to build houses. Jesse met Mollie at the University of Texas while involved with Wesley Foundation. Both were charter members of the Christian Faith and Life Community. They married on April 8, 1954, in Sweden en route to a Methodist work camp in the Philippines. When the tsunami hit Indonesia in 2004, as a volunteer from his local church, First UMC of Kalamazoo, Jesse went to Banda Aceh where he was asked by UMCOR to set up their Indonesian agency to rebuild villages. In the last few

years in Kalamazoo, Jesse worked with the team building Center for Transformation, a resident re-entry program. Jesse was a fisherman. Whether in the waters of Hong Kong, Belize or Asylum Lake, he loved being out with 'em as much as catching 'em. Survivors include: wife, Mollie; sons, Peter (Maria Porter) and Paul (Aedin); daughters, Crispin (Reg) and Claire; and 12 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, David. A memorial service was held at First United Methodist Church in Kalamazoo February 29, 2012. Cremation followed the body’s donation for medical research.

Doles, Pauline Pauline Doles of Columbus, Indiana, 88, widow of the late Rev. Vern E. Doles, a deceased member of the Indiana Conference, died January 27, 2012 in Venice, Florida. She was born in Westport, Indiana, the daughter of Cecil V. and Ruth Downey Brunton. She was a homemaker and enjoyed knitting, cooking and baking. People would stand in lines for her pies. She also enjoyed bowling. She was a member of East Columbus United Methodist Church and attended Venice United Methodist Church while in Florida. She served as an Indiana State Officer of the United Methodist Women for several years. She was also a member of the Clifford Chapter Order of Eastern Star. Survivors include three sons, Donald E. (Janet) Doles of Davidson, North Carolina, Jerry L. (Laurie) Doles of Zion, Illinois, and Robert E. (Barbara) Doles of Westport, Indiana; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. A memorial service was held February 2, 2012, at East Columbus United Methodist Church in Columbus, Indiana.

Gilbreath, Stella Stella Mae Gilbreath, 82, of Terre Haute, passed away Aug. 10, 2011, in Davis Gardens Healthcare Center. The 1947 graduate of Graysville High School and graduate of Terre Haute Business College was born to Byron Foutz and Fern Montgomery Foutz July 8, 1929. She was a faithful member of United Methodist Temple Church, with special interest in Membership Care. Survivors include her husband, Carl Gene Gilbreath, a retired United Methodist Minister in Indiana; and two adopted children, Kevin Eugene Gilbreath of Jasonville and Karla Clayton of Terre Haute, and a very special grandson, Jason Wayne Gilbreath, whom she loved and cared for since his childhood; three other grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Musical Tribute for Stella was held August 13, 2011, at United Methodist Temple Church, in Terre Haute, Indiana, with the Rev. Steve Cain officiating. Burial followed in

Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, Indiana.

Hiatt, Mary Mary Hiatt of Peoria, Illinois, 100, widow of the late Rev. Russell Hiatt of the Indiana Conference, died December 22, 2011. Survivors include: two daughters, Ruth Mayfield (Frank) of Peoria, Illinois, and Julia Hiatt of Concord, North Carolina; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Keith, Gladys

Gladys Keith died February 28, 2012, at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis. She was born in Wilmore, Kentucky, the daughter of the Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Virgil L. Moore. Gladys graduated from Sayre School for Girls in Lexington, Kentucky; Asbury University, Wilmore, Kentucky; and attended graduate school at the University of Kentucky. She taught high school English and history. She directed drama productions and coached cheerleaders. She married a pastor and supported him in ministry as well as teaching and leading church groups her entire life. They served the United Methodist Church in southern Indiana as well as Florida. Gladys was a librarian in Columbus, Indiana. She was a mentor to young people and a Christian

example of God's grace to all she encountered. Gladys loved to entertain family, church groups and her many friends. She was an avid reader and remained active and socially engaged her entire life. She was a member of P.E.O. and served as president of her chapter in Florida. She is survived by her husband of nearly sixty-seven years, the Rev. Dr. James W. Keith, of Franklin, Indiana; her children, the Rev. J. William Keith, Jr. of Westfield, Indiana, and Dr. Carolyn Keith Burr (David Lewis) of North Coldwell, New Jersey; and two grandchildren. A service of celebration of her Christian life of service to God, the church and her communities was held at Grace United Methodist Church, Franklin, Indiana, March 6, 2012. The Revs. Andy Kinsey, David V.W. Owen and Bert Kite officiated. Burial followed at Perseverance Chapel United Methodist Church in Corydon, Indiana.

Kenline, Jeannette Jean A. Kenline, 88, of Bluffton passed away on, May 29, 2011, at River Terrace Estates in Bluffton, Indiana. Mrs. Kenline was a homemaker and supportive pastor's wife to her husband Rev. Bruce Kenline. Jean graduated in 1941 from South Bend St. Joseph's High School and served as a mechanic in the United States Navy from 1944-1946. Jean earned her bachelor's degree in business from Indiana University and later earned her master's degree in education from St. Frances University. Jean regularly worked as a substitute teacher at Norwell High School. She was also an active member of the WAVES in Sarasota, Florida. She enjoyed spending her leisure time knitting and sewing. Jean was born April 15, 1923, in South Bend, Indiana, the daughter of Amos and Ethel (Grosjean) Hafer. She was united in marriage to Rev. Bruce Kenline on August 9, 1947. Her husband survives. Additional survivors include three sons: Greg (Rhonda) Kenline of Albion, Kim (Janice) Kenline of Ossian and Scott (Phyllis) Kenline of Fort Wayne; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held June 3, 2011, at 10 AM at the Myers Funeral Home in Markle, Indiana, with Pastor Gary Aupperle officiating. Interment was in Markle Cemetery.

King, Doris

Doris King, 86, of Carmel, wife of Rev. Jack T. King, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, passed away August 14, 2011. She was born on October 2, 1924, in Herrin, Illinois, to the late James and Flora Armstrong Stubblefield. Doris was a graduate of Asbury University and attended Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky. She was a member of Carmel United Methodist Church. Survivors include her husband, Rev. Jack T. King; children, Dr. Jeanine (Greg) Childs and Dr. Ted (Lisa) King; and seven grandchildren. A memorial service was held on August 18, 2011, at Carmel United Methodist Church. Burial followed in Carmel Cemetery.

Kundenreich, D. Carol Dorothy Carol Kundenreich, 74, wife of the Rev. Al Kundenreich, a retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital April 16, 2012, after a month long illness. She will be greatly missed by all whose lives were touched throughout her life. Carol was born in Detroit, Michigan, on June 23, 1937, the daughter of Lanes G. and Kathleen Smith. She graduated from Eastern High School in Detroit, received her Bachelor’s from Taylor University and her Master’s in education from Ball State University. She was an elementary school teacher throughout north central Indiana for a period of over thirty years. Carol has always been active in the United Methodist Church. At High Street United Methodist Church, Carol was a member of the choir and active in Sunday school, United Methodist Women’s Circle and Stephen Ministry. Carol was active throughout the community participating in IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital Hospice program, Neonatal Intensive Care

Nursery Cuddler Program and a local clown ministry. Carol is survived by her husband of 53 years, Al; two sons, Alan (Wanda), Warren, Ohio, and Thomas(Jonet), Yorktown; nine grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Sandra Louise Judd. A memorial service was held on April 21, 2012, at High Street United Methodist Church in Muncie. A graveside service was held in Plymouth, Indiana, on April 23, 2012.

McClure, Dorothy Dorothy Ann (Atkinson) McClure, 81, of Franklin United Methodist Community and wife of the Rev. Leroy Edwin McClure, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, passed away February 24, 2012, at Franciscan St. Francis Health-Beech Grove. She was born December 20, 1930, in Oakland City, to Elza Earl and Louise (Woodruff) Atkinson. She married Rev. Edwin McClure on June 10, 1953, in Oakland City; he survives. She was a graduate of Oakland City High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree in music education at the University of Evansville. She earned a master’s degree in public education from Indiana State University.

She taught music in public school grades K-12 and conducted private flute lessons. She played in symphony orchestras and directed community choruses. She was a past member of the Indiana Arts Commission and was a past member and chairwoman of the Plymouth Indiana Arts Commission. She was a member of P.E.O., Sigma Alpha Iota, Beta Sigma Omicron and was a past member of Tri Kappa and of the United Methodist choirs, which she directed. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School and led various women’s groups. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Edwin McClure of Franklin; her son, Steve (Sue Ellen) McClure of Vincennes; her daughter Lisa (David) Faulkenberg of Tell City; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. Rev. Andy Kinsey conducted a memorial service February 28, 2012, at Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin. Burial followed in Montgomery Cemetery in Oakland City.

McGinnis, Celia Celia R. Hoogeveen McGinnis, 74, of Flora and wife of retired Associate Member of the Indiana Conference, the Rev. Amos L. McGinnis, died Tuesday, died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at Milner Community Health Care Center, Rossville. She was married to the Rev. Amos L. McGinnis in Lafayette in 1994, and he survives. along with two sons, Dale L. Both of Arizona City, Arizona, and Steven Bothof (wife, Pam) of Rossville; a stepdaughter, Carole Clements (husband, Howard) of Chalmers; and a stepson, Randy McGinnis (wife, Brenda) of Hamilton Lake. A memorial service was held on August 27, 2011, at Baker-Abbott Funeral Home, Flora, Indiana. The Rev. Jeff Landon officiated. Burial followed in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Flora.

McMahan, Violet

Violet McMahan of Bloomington, Indiana, and wife of the Rev. Donald F. McMahan, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, died on November 20, 2011. She was the daughter of the late Fred and Pearl Alda Smith. She was born in Lawrence County, Indiana, 90 years ago. Her death occurred peacefully at home in Bloomington, Indiana, surrounded by her family. She graduated from Mitchell High School in April, 1939. She also married her husband, Donald, in 1939, and worked in the Registrar's Office at Indiana University where he was a student. Violet was an integral and gracious part of her husband's pastorates in Greene and Monroe Counties, the Indiana towns of Raub, Remington, Crawfordsville and Plainfield, as well as his administrative assistant as the Superintendent for the Greencastle, Lebanon and South Bend Districts of the Methodist Church, and as a director of two Methodist homes for the aged, Haven Hubbard in South Bend and Asbury Towers in Greencastle. Violet and

Donald enjoyed traveling in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, cruising among the Caribbean Islands and exploring Alaska. She also loved gourmet cooking and welcoming people into her home. She was an avid reader. As a pianist, she delighted in the performances of the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. She also liked art, especially paintings by Georgia O'Keefe and other modern artists. At home she enjoyed her flower garden and playing bridge with friends. In the 1990's, Violet was a member of the Board of Directors of the Bloomington Hospital. As a member of Psi Iota Xi Sorority in earlier years, she participated in medical outreach programs. She also loved being a part of the local P.E.O. women's organization for the last 20 years. Survivors include her husband of 72 years, the Rev. Donald F. McMahan; son, the Rev. Larry W. McMahan of Bloomington; daughter, Susan E. Stein; and granddaughter, Jessica Anne Stein. Visitation will be at the Allen Funeral Home, 4155 South Old State Road 37 in Bloomington, from 4 to 7 p.m. November 22, 2011. A memorial service was held November 23, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Bloomington with the Rev. Mark Fenstermacher officiating and the Rev. Charles T. Dupree, Rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Bloomington, assisting. Interment followed the service at the Cresthaven Cemetery in Bedford, Indiana.

McMillan, Dorothy

Dorothy McMillan, 97, a resident of Franklin United Methodist Community and widow of the late Rev. Carl Vincent McMillan, a former pastoral visitor at Grace UMC in Franklin, Indiana, and retired clergy member of the Indiana Conference, died on January 17, 2012. Survivors include: a daughter, Janet Hoff; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Lamb. A memorial service was held on January 21, 2012, at Franklin United Methodist Community in Wright Chapel in Franklin, with burial at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.

Millard, Minnietta Minnietta Margaret Millard was born on October 28, 1941, in Pierre, South Dakota to George and Hazel Green. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota in 1963 and her Master of Religious Education degree at Boston University School of Theology in 1966. She died of pancreatic cancer on September 9, 2011, at the home she designed in Indianapolis. Minnietta was an accomplished stained glass artist and made many of the stained glass windows in the new St. Luke's United Methodist Church sanctuary in Indianapolis, as well as many other churches and homes. She was also a poet and author writing a book on how God speaks to us through our life experiences entitled, A Closer Look: A Theology of the Ordinary. She led some of the Academy for Spiritual Formation retreats for the South Indiana Annual Conference and served as chairperson of the South Dakota Annual Conference Committee on the Status and Role

of Women. She was honored as the Religious Educator of the year in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was also instrumental in bringing a personal growth training program to Indianapolis entitled, Beyond Your Best. In her book, Minnietta described herself as a person of vision, who balanced the paradoxes of life in an ongoing trust in God's Word. She also said she helped create unconditional love, openness, integrity and beauty in the world and that she was "an alive, carrying, committed woman standing for a new world." Her motto during the last year of her life was "Trust God no matter what." She married Rev. Kent Millard, Director of Generosity and Gratitude for the Indiana Conference and retired pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Indianapolis; he survives her. They married April 13, 1963, at the United Methodist Church in Redfield, South Dakota. They are the parents of two children. Kendall Millard is an attorney in Indianapolis and he and his wife Katherine have four children: Madison, MacKenzie, Morgan and Marshall. Their daughter, Koretta Hall, is a social worker in Indianapolis married to Eddie Hall and they have three children: Tre', Jalen and Taylor. Her celebration of life service was held on September 16, 2011, at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Indianapolis where her ashes are interred.

Miller, Audra

Audra E. Miller, 88, passed away on August 1, 2011, at Woodcrest Nursing Center, Decatur. Born on June 2, 1923, in Celina, Ohio, to Dallas and Anna (Suhr) Coats, she married Fuhrman P. Miller on March 24, 1946; he died October 3, 2010. A graduate of Celina High School, she was a homemaker and supported her husband's ministry for more than 50 years, which took her to Avilla, Rensselaer, Linn Grove, Decatur and Goshen. She also worked as a teacher's aide in a special education program in Elkhart and in the North Adams schools. She has been a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church since she and her husband returned to retire from full-time ministry in Decatur in 1987, active in the Shalom Circle of the United Methodist Women. She was one of several women who pioneered the St. Mark's pre-school ministry in the mid-1960s. Survivors include four sons, Daniel Miller of Danville, Mark (Kathy) Miller of Bluffton, Alan Miller of Fort Wayne, and Rev. Kevin (Liz) Miller of Bremen; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Fuhrman and two great-granddaughters. A memorial service was held on August 5, 2011, at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Decatur, Indiana, officiated by Pastor Michael Heinbaugh and burial in Decatur Cemetery.

Nester, Donald Donald P. Nester, 65, of Mooresville and husband of the Rev. Jonetta Nester, associate pastor of Monrovia United Methodist Church, passed away March 16, 2012. He was born March 2, 1947, to the late Ernest and Mary (Lumpkin) Nester in Bridgeport, Indiana. He was a respiratory therapist for Kindred Hospital for 13 years until 2006. He was a member of the Monrovia United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Jonie (Meier) Nester; three sons, Ernie (Janace), Timothy (Debbie), and James (Jill) Nester; a daughter, Jean Marie Nester; step-children, Kristopher (Jasmine) and Wendy Whitehead and Rebekah (Ryan) Duncan; and 15 grandchildren. A memorial service was held on March 20, 2012, in the Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home Plainfield, Indiana.

Offutt, Alberta

Alberta Lou "Bert" (Day) Offutt, 92, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2011, at the Franklin United Methodist Community. She was a resident of Franklin and a former resident of Columbus and Vincennes. By her side, was her loving husband: Rev. William S. Offutt; her daughter, Judie and grandson, Doug. Bert was born on November 27, 1918, in Vincennes to the late Ralph C. and Lydia (Campbell) Day. She married Rev. William S. Offutt, her husband of 72 years on Nov. 26, 1938, he survives. Bert was a 1936 graduate of Lincoln High School in Vincennes and went on to study at Vincennes University and the Barnes Hospital School of Nursing at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a 50-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Vincennes Chapter 291 and a member of Tri Kappa. She attended Grace United Methodist Church in Franklin.

She is survived by her husband, Rev William Offutt, daughter, Judie, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, David S. Offutt; a son - in – law, James A. Lahr; and one grandson, Brian J. Lahr. The Rev. David Lee conducted a Celebration of Life on October 3, 2011, at the Franklin United Methodist Community's Wright Chapel in Franklin.

Palmer, Delores Hartman Delores A. Hartman Palmer, 85, of Muncie and formerly of Ft. Meyers, Florida, passed away March 19, 2012, at Morrison Woods after an extended illness. She was born January 21, 1927, in Herrin, Illinois, to Eugene and Ada (Brown) Hanks. Delores graduated from Herrin High School in Illinois. She was a homemaker and was very active and supportive of her husband Leon, who was a United Methodist minister for 50 years and had been the district superintendent in Muncie. Delores was a member of High Street United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and PTO. Survivors include her husband of ten years Leigh Palmer of Dallas, Texas; son, Stephen Hartman, Lapel, Indiana; daughter Marcy Moore, Lapel; Leigh Wright (husband, Roger) of Muncie; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Delores was preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Ada Hanks and her husband of 52 years, Leon Hartman. A memorial service was held on March 22, 2012, at Parson Mortuary with Rev. Charlotte Overmyer officiating. Burial was at a later date.

Patrick, Lillie M. Lillie Patrick died September 26, 2011, at Heritage Healthcare, in Jasper, Georgia. She was born in New Albany on October 6, 1925, to the late Henry Conrad Richert and Ella Florence Kintner Richert Ward. She was a member of Gates Chapel United Methodist Church, Ellijay, Georgia, at the time of her death. She was a graduate of New Albany High School, class of 1944. On September 8, 1945, she married Rev. Osa Edward Patrick of Hazel Green, Kentucky, and New Albany. He was a retired United Methodist minister who passed away Dec. 23, 2010. She worked many jobs and contributed greatly to the union. She worked while Rev. Patrick was in school studying to become a minister. When he was appointed to churches in Indiana and in Georgia, she worked alongside of her husband performing secretarial duties and supporting him and the churches in many ways. Later in life, at the age of 46, she returned to school at Prosser Vocational School and became a nurse, which was a lifelong dream of

hers. She was employed at Community Hospital East, Indianapolis, until her retirement in 1986. At that time she and Rev. Patrick moved back to Ellijay, Georgia, and he retired from the ministry. The couple had previously lived in Ellijay during the 1960s. Survivors include their children, Donald E. Patrick and his wife, Vicki, of Ellijay, Georgia; Linda S. Turner and her husband, John, of Brownsburg; and Rebekah M. Shirey, of Indianapolis; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by Rev. Osa Patrick her husband of 65 years. A memorial service was held on October 1, 2011, at Logan Funeral Home Chapel in Ellijay, Georgia. Revs. Sharon Watkins and Adam Mathis officiated. Graveside interment service followed in the Gates Chapel United Methodist Cemetery.

Phillips, Margaret Margaret Phillips of Muncie, Indiana, 93, widow of the late Rev. Garrett Phillips, deceased clergy member of the Indiana Conference, died January 12, 2012. Survivors include: three children, John (Jamie) Phillips of Minden Neveda; Robin (William) Lett of Muncie; and Ann (Jesse) Bivens of Dunkirk; 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild. A memorial service was held January 14, 2012, at The Meeks Mortuary, and Crematory in Muncie, with burial at Old Shiloh Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Rees, Sara

Sara L. Rees, 82, of Marion and widow of the late Rev Howard Rees, retired clergy of the Indiana Conference, died on Monday, April 30, 2012, in Lutheran Hospital. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Russell and Sara (Ice) Ricks. She married Rev. Howard E. Rees on May 24, 1950. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1993. She was a graduate of Manchester College and earned her Master’s degree from St. Francis. Sara was a special education teacher, later working as a realtor for Larry Wells & Associates. She was a member of the Marion First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir, Speeders and United Methodist Women. Sara was the wife of a United Methodist pastor serving churches in Laketon, Columbia City, Marion, Berne and LaFontaine, all in Indiana. She was a member of the Good Sam’s Camping Club and the LOA Camping Club.

Richey, Mary Mary Marguerite Richey, 93, of Goshen and widow of the late Rev. J. Ross Richey of the Indiana Conference, died on December 5, 2011, at Greencroft Healthcare. Mary was born Nov. 25, 1918, in Clay Township, to John S. and Rosa Mae (Grau) Durr. She married the Rev. J. Ross Richey on June 21, 1942, in Kokomo; he died Sept. 14, 1991. She graduated from Howard Twp. School in 1936, graduated from Kokomo Jr. College in 1938 and from Manchester College in 1940, with a Bachelor of Science in education. She taught for more than 20 years and retired from Elkhart Community Schools in 1978. Mary was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Elkhart. She was also a member of the Indiana Teachers Association, American Council of the Blind, Elkhart County Retired Teachers Association, P.E.O. and she volunteered at Greencroft Community Center, Goshen. She is survived by a daughter, Marcia Ann (Charlie) Russell, Indianapolis; a son, Ronald W. (Julia) Richey, North Webster; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and three step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Ross Richey. A memorial service was held on December 8, 2011, at The Meetinghouse at Greencroft. A graveside service followed at Kokomo Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Kokomo, Indiana.

Sawyer, Dorothy Dorothy Sawyer of Jeffersonville, 88, widow of the late Rev. Loyd J. Sawyer, Elder of the Indiana Conference and step-mother of the Rev. Wilma M. Sawyer Bone, pastor of Henryville UMC of the South District, died September 13, 2011. She was the former Dorothy J. Leffler, a native of Elizabeth, retired from the H.A. Seinsheimers Company after 30 years of service and was a member of Grant Line United Methodist Church where she was active in several activities. Survivors include a stepdaughter, Rev. Wilma Bone and her husband, Duane; a stepson, William Sawyer and his wife, Carol; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Loyd J. Sawyer and her parents, Clifton and Ruby Leffler. A memorial service was held on September 16, 2011, at Grant Line United Methodist

Church, New Albany, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Elizabeth.

Shepherd, Billie Billie Townsend Shepherd, 90, of Columbus and widow of the late Rev David Shepherd, of the Indiana Conference, died May 26, 2011, at Columbus Regional Hospital after a brief illness. She was a resident of the Four Seasons Retirement Center. Born in Hayden, Indiana, September 9, 1920, the only child of Grant Burkett Townsend and Mary Jane (Heaton) Townsend, she grew up in Crothersville, Indiana, where she met and married Rev. David M. Shepherd, her husband for 47 years until his death in 1986. As a Methodist minister's wife, Mrs. Shepherd lived in many places in Indiana – Crothersville, Hope, Manila, Morristown, Linton, Aurora, Columbus, Indianapolis and back to Columbus in retirement. She served as choir director, organist, director of education and Sunday school teacher in most of the churches the Shepherds served. Mrs. Shepherd was also an interior designer for many years, with one of her commissions being the Eli Lily executive offices in Indianapolis. She was

past president of the Tri Kappa Sorority of Indianapolis, received a Governor's citation for her work as president in organizing the largest local Mental Health Association in Indiana, and held various offices as a member of many civic, academic and religious clubs, organizations, and societies. She was a very active member of First United Methodist Church in Columbus. Survivors include her son, Daniel T. Shepherd and daughter-in-law, Nancy Anne Russell Shepherd of Lake Worth, Florida; two grandsons and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Grant B. and Mary Jane Townsend; and her husband, Rev. David M. Shepherd. A memorial service was conducted on June 1, 2011, at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus, Indiana, with the Rev. Gary Schaar and Brian Campbell officiating. Burial was in Garland Brook Cemetery.

Squibb, Diane Diane M. Squibb, 63, of Knox, Indiana, wife of the Rev. Raymond A. Squibb, pastor of Knox United Methodist Church in the North District, passed away February 8, 2012, in Golden Living Center, Knox, Indiana. She was born March 2, 1948, in Orange County, Indiana, to Robert Dale and Mary Marguerite (Knowles) Owen and lived in Knox for six years, coming from Sharpsville, Indiana. She was an employee of the Starke County Library. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, Psi iota Xi, the Starke County Historical Society and was a Girl Scouts of America past leader. Being a pastor's wife, she helped anchor churches for twenty-five years including teaching Sunday school and organizing vacation bible schools. On December 13, 1986, in Burlington, Indiana, she was married to Rev. Ray Squibb, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Dawn Wilkinson of Fishers, and Anna

Squibb of Ft. Wayne; two sons, Michael Bannon of Kokomo and Joel Squibb of Lebanon, and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service was held at the Knox United Methodist Church on February 12, 2012, with Rev. Bob Dexter, Rev. Frank Beard and Superintendent Cindy Reynolds officiating. A second memorial service was held on February 13, 2012, at Cane Creek Christian Church. Burial was in Cane Creek Cemetery.

Steltz, Irene Agnes Irene Steltz of Marion, surviving spouse of the late Rev. Donald C. Steltz of the Indiana Conference, died July 17, 2011. Survivors include: sons, Donald C. (Sharon) Steltz, Jr. of New Albany and Ronald G. Steltz of Marion; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Sumner, Gladys Gladys M. Sumner, 101, widow of the late Rev. Richard Sumner of the Indiana Conference and a resident of Heritage Pointe in Warren, died December 24, 2011, in her home. She was born January 7, 1910, in Accrington, England, to William H. and Florence Ainsworth Ritchings. She married Rev. Richard Sumner on June 1, 1929. Her husband preceded her in death on July 1, 1987. Mrs. Sumner was a former resident of Gas City. She was known as the "Hat Lady." Survivors include son, Richard D. (Judith) Sumner, of Haines City, Florida; a daughter, Irene (Robert) Booher, of Gas City; and 11 grandchildren. A memorial service was held December 29, 2011, at Needham-Storey-Wampner Funeral Service in Gas City. Gerald Moreland officiated. Burial was at Grant Memorial Park, Marion.

Todd, Kathryn Kathryn L. Todd, 80, of Madison and surviving spouse of the late Rev. John E. Todd, deceased member of the Indiana Conference, died July 9, 2011, at King's Daughters' Hospital. She was born Dec. 30, 1930, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Howard D. and Mary L. Imel Carlow. She worked at King's Daughters' Hospital for 15 years, at Union Bank and Trust in Greensburg, and at Vail-Holt Funeral Home for the last 35 years. She was a member of the former Brooksburg United Methodist Church and Friendly Circle, Trinity United Methodist Church and the Dorcas Circle of the International Order of the King's Daughters and Sons. She is survived by three sons, James Elbert Storie and Joseph William Storie, both of Madison, and the Rev. Charles E. Todd of Savannah, Georgia; three step children, Carroll Troyce "C.T." Todd, Joan Todd and John David Todd; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elbert V. Storie, who died in 1959; her second husband, the Rev. John E. Todd, who died in 1989; one son, John Robert Storie; one daughter, Mary Kathryn Wells, and her parents. The memorial service was held on July 13, 2011, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial was in Vevay Cemetery.

Valentine, Mona Mona Margaret Johnson Valentine, 83, wife of the Rev. William R. Valentine, Jr., retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, passed away peacefully after an extended illness on April 15, 2012, at Wesley Manor Retirement Home in Frankfort. Mona was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on December 14, 1928, to Paul E. and Evelyn Grant Johnson. She attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, where her father was Dean, but moved with her parents to Boston and graduated from Newton Wellsley Hospital with a degree in Nursing. It was in Boston that she met her beloved husband, William R. Valentine, Jr., who was a student at Boston University School of Theology where her father taught. Bill and Mona were one of the first couples married in Marsh Chapel on campus October 11, 1950. Mona devoted her life to her husband and children and the many United Methodist Churches that Bill served. Her first job as a professional R.N. was at the student clinic at Boston University, but she soon took some time off to raise her family. When her children were teenagers she returned to working part time at Johnson Memorial Hospital in Franklin, where Bill was serving the United

Methodist Church. When the family moved to Speedway, Indiana, she began working at Methodist Hospital on the maternity unit and remained there while Bill served as District Superintendent of the Indianapolis Southeast District of the United Methodist Church. Several years later, when the couple moved to Frankfort, Indiana, she worked at the Clinton County Hospital, again in maternity. She retired from nursing in 1980. She enjoyed playing golf, tennis, croquet and cards. She is survived by her son Russ (Chris) Valentine of Zionsville, daughter, Linda Valentine Bryant of Plainfield, three grandchildren and one great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Paul Wesley Bryant. A memorial service was held on May 6, 2012, at Amanda Reid Chapel, Wesley Manor in Frankfort.

Wade, Miriam R. Miriam Ruth (Eaton) Wade, 81, of Franklin, Indiana, surviving spouse of the late Rev. Donald C. Wade, deceased member of the Indiana Conference, died July 3, 2011. She was born November 8, 1929, in Garden City, Kansas, the eldest child of Ralph and Lois (Gorton) Eaton. Miriam graduated from high school in 1948 in Leoti, Kansas. She attended Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, where she met her future husband, Donald C. Wade. They were married December 18, 1948. Miriam and Don taught in Roxbury, Kansas, while Don continued his schooling. They lived for a time in Texas and Illinois while he was in seminary and eventually moved to Indiana in 1954, when Don was appointed to serve the New Richmond Methodist Church. They relocated several times serving Methodist/United Methodist churches in Covington, Lafayette, Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Noblesville and Linton. Miriam obtained a Bachelor’s degree in education in 1972 at Butler University in

Indianapolis. She later obtained her master’s degree from Indiana State University. She taught developmentally disabled and visually impaired students for 21 years in Central Indiana, all while continuing her involvement in the churches where Don served. Miriam retired from teaching in 1994. Her retirement years were busy with volunteer work, short-term missions and world travel. She regularly participated in activities at the Shepherd’s Center at North United Methodist Church in Indianapolis and enjoyed being part of Tiebinders, an association of retirees. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Miriam is survived by her children, Michelle Freeman, of Crawfordsville, Indiana, David Wade (Jenny), of Arcadia, Indiana, Judith Wade and Carol Wade, Indianapolis; two grandsons and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on July 3, 2011, at Franklin United Methodist Community in Franklin, Indiana. Burial followed in Bethel Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Walls, Gloria Shirley Gloria Shirley Burton Walls, 87, of Indianapolis and wife of the Rev. Charles Ancil “Jack” Walls, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, passed away on March 6, 2012, after a lengthy illness. She was born on March 6, 1925, to Albert and Wilma Williams in Cincinnati, Ohio. She married Charles Walls on August 29, 1943. A life-long Methodist minister's wife, Shirley became an elementary/special education teacher and built the Sunshine School, the first school for special needs children in Seymour, Indiana. She was a graduate of Indiana University, a member of Meridian Street United Methodist Church and active in the PEO Sorority. She is survived by her husband Charles/Jack; daughters, Sally and Maribeth; daughter-in-law, Wendy; and one grandson. A memorial service was held on March 17, 2012, at Meridian Street United Methodist

Church in Indianapolis. Burial was at Center Ridge Cemetery in Sullivan, Indiana.

Williams, Mabel Mabel (Parton) Williams, 87, Kokomo, wife of the Rev. Harold E. Williams, retired Elder of the Indiana Conference, passed away February 19, 2012, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was born March 10, 1924, near Wilmore, Kentucky. She was the daughter of Matt and Anna (Treadway) Parton. She was married to the Rev. Harold E. Williams on July 12, 1942, in Indianapolis. She graduated from Manual High School in 1942 in Indianapolis. She also attended Azusa University. As a minister’s wife, she worked conscientiously by her husband’s side for over a half-century in pastorates in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Wisconsin and Indiana. She was faithful and supportive in all the duties of being a homemaker and a pastor’s wife. She was gifted in music and loved to play the piano and organ. She also enjoyed crocheting and craftwork. Outside the home, she worked for a number of years as a legal and business secretary. She was truly a courageous lady, even in the midst of deep illness, with no complaints but a victorious faith in her Lord. Surviving is her loving husband of almost 70 years, the Rev. Harold E. Williams, Kokomo; two daughters and a son-in-law, Rebecca Smith, Mentone, and Joanne and Michael Berger, Orlando, Florida; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service was held February 23, 2012, at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Kokomo, Indiana, officiated by the Revs. John Walls and William Kinnan.

Willyard, Lorraine Lorraine A. Willyard, 82, of Columbia City, Indiana, and widow of the late Rev. James B. Willyard who was a former clergy member of the Indiana Conference, passed away on March 18, 2012, in her home. Born August 6, 1929 in Churchville, Maryland, she was the daughter of B.W. and Ada (Blackburn) Parlier. When she was an infant, she moved with her family to Bedford, Ohio, where she graduated from Bedford High School with the Class of 1947. She completed her education when she graduated from Cleveland Bible College, Cleveland, Ohio. On August 5, 1949, she married James B. Willyard in Bedford. After her marriage, she and her husband moved to Lowell, MA, Spiceland, Muncie, Pendleton, Nappanee, DeMotte, Elkhart and Columbia City. She worked at Columbia Township School as a teacher's aide for three years and served as church secretary at several pastorates in the United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Columbia City United Methodist Church

and Philomatheon Reading Club both of Columbia City. Survivors include her two sons, Richard C. (Cindy) Willyard of New Castle and David C. (Patty) Willyard, M.D, of Churubusco; daughter, Kim S. (Len) Amburgey of Columbia City; 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Pastor James B. Willyard and son, J. Russell. A memorial service was held March 25, 2012, at Columbia City United Methodist Church. Burial followed at South Park (Annex) Cemetery, Columbia City, Indiana.

Wolf, Carolyn Carolyn K. Wolf, 96, of Valparaiso and wife of retired Elder of the Indiana Conference the Rev. Dr. John D. Wolf, passed away February 11, 2012. She was born July 14, 1915 in New York City to Earl Hewes and Eva (Sweet) Kelsey. Mrs. Wolf received her B.A. degree from Oberlin College and M.A. degree from Teacher's College, Columbia University, New York. She had been a kindergarten teacher in Ohio, Saginaw, Michigan, and Manhasset, Long Island, New York. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso, the United Methodist Women, League of Women Voters and PEO. Mrs. Wolf was an accomplished pianist and was devoted to children's Christian education. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, the Rev. Dr. John D. Wolf, whom she married on December 27, 1941 at the Union Theological Seminary in New York City; three sons: John D. Kelsey (Deborah) Wolf of Williamston, Michigan; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents. A memorial service was held February 18, 2012, at the First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso with the Rev. Dr. Jacob C. Williams officiating. Burial followed in Highland Cemetery in South Bend, Indiana.
