complete it.• Don’t mark off an assignment if it’s not complete, turn in your weekly report as is.• The Weekly Tracker is due by Friday at 5:00PM PST each week . Email it to the Political

Team Desk (volunteerteam@borgenproject.org).• Send questions to volunteerteam@borgenproject.org.• If you ever run out of things to work on, visit the Point Chart or email your Manager.• You’ll notice that some weeks have fewer assignments than others. Those weeks give you

more freedom to select your own assignments and focus on areas where you haven’t met your objectives (fundraising, mobilizing, etc.).

• Be as detailed as you can in your notes. Screenshots of everything are highly encouraged as well any pictures or footage you took of meetings, swarms, events, etc.

• If you’re feeling ambitious, you are welcome to jump ahead in assignments after you complete the current week. This is an especially good idea if you have finals or other commitments that might create a long week.

• State of the Union - We have setup a continuous State of the Union page. It works like a blog. We'll publish our State of the Unions each month as a "post" on borgenteam.org and it will appear here: http://borgenteam.org/state-of-the-union/. This will allow new folks to look back at past State of the Unions.

Below you will find documentation that you must continue updating for me to observe your progress each week.

CONGRESSIONAL MEETINGS:During your internship you will be working with 2 meeting spreadsheets. The first spreadsheet is for viewing purposes only – it gives you an indication of which leaders we have met with and what bill has been discussed. Please request viewing access by clicking on this link.

The second spreadsheet, Lobbying Meeting Request (“LMR”) is for your use. This provides me with information on which leaders you have been in contact with and your progress to date. Please save this spreadsheet on your desktop, update accordingly and provide the same to me along with your tracker on a weekly basis.

Week 1[List week 1 date i.e. 12/14]

• Complete the New Hires Boot Camp . Be sure to read and watch everything. Your manager will give you an informal, verbal quiz when you meet with them.

• Learn why calling Congress matters. Be sure to view the example of the actual call report that leaders receive.

• Find your congressional leaders . Add the 3 people who represent you in Congress (2 Senators and 1 Representative) to your cellphone contacts. If you have connections to two or more regions (your parents live in LA, but you go to school in NY) then you are welcome and encouraged to focus your both advocacy on both places you have ties to.

• List the names and phone numbers of your Congressional leaders.- Sen. - Sen.- Rep.

• Educate yourself on your leaders and their views so that you can effectively educate them and the public. This website is a great tool to find voting records, topics of importance, etc.

• Download the Countable app to keep track of important legislative issues. • Follow leaders on their social media accounts (list your leaders’ Twitter and Facebook page

• Read how The Borgen Project chooses legislation to advocate for. • Be familiar with this great way to turn your online shopping into funding for the cause on

• Schedule a meeting with Congressional leaders. Send the meeting requests to the district offices. Your goal is to meet with at least one of your leaders during your time as an Advocate.

• Big Six States: If you are located in any of the following states, please be sure to contact policy@borgenproject.org before sending in your lobbying meeting requests: New York, Florida, California, Washington, Texas or Maryland.

• Building buzz is one of the easiest ways to get people involved in the cause. All you have to do is talk to them about it!

• Download this app which it makes it easy for you to see what your congressional leaders are up to. Follow the latest bills, see floor activity and explore votes from the palm of your hand.

• Think of 10 people you want to engage in the cause (by teaching them to call & email congress). List their names below:

turn in your weekly tracker.• Next week you’ll begin your personal fundraising campaign. Review the organization’s

• Schedule a time with your manager for a follow up meeting to discussing fundraising and general questions you may have.

Fundraising StrategyDuring weeks 3 and 4 of your tracker, you will be sending out fundraising letters to friends and family, and also creating an online fundraising campaign. Your online fundraising campaign, along with your friends and family letters are requirements that will help you reach the $500 minimum, but you’ll need to implement more strategies to ensure the goal is reached. Come up with your own fundraising ideas or try one of these, and list your fundraising strategies below.

• Complete fundraising letters. A minimum of 15 is required, but you’ll want to send at least 30 if you hope to raise $500 off of the letters. Anticipate 1 in 8 might actually donate. Those who raise the most from letters, typically send over 40.

Media coverage is a great way to spread the word about The Borgen Project and global poverty to the masses. Below are several ways that you can get the message to the public.• Pitch to the media. Called or emailed two reporters asking them to do a story on The Borgen

Project or how reducing poverty creates U.S. jobs and a more secure world.• Write a Letter to the Editor .• Call into C-SPAN or a talk radio show. Inject global poverty into the conversation.• Call your 3 Congressional leaders in support of one of these issues.• Email your leaders in support of one of these issues.
