ABSTRACT
This section varies in style and numbers of sentences allowed. Double check with your
adviser or consult the librarian for school-specific policy.
xii
INTRODUCTION
This is where the body of the paper starts. 1 The introduction and conclusion can be as
short as few paragraphs or longer than one page. If it is more than a page, do not repeat the
“INTRODUCTION” title on the next page. There are certain rules of formatting text:
Chapter title uses sentence style
Double-space the text in the main body of paper EXCEPT footnote, block quotations, and
captions of table / figure.
Beginning with introduction section, there are page numbers at the center of footer. There
may be different local guidelines in your department regarding the position of page
numbers. (for example, to the right side of the header)
If you divide the text of dissertation into many parts (ex. PART II.), begin the part with a
part-title page. Count the part-title page in paginating but do not place page number on it.
Next page is an example of part-title page.2
1 This is where footnote is placed. Use “insert footnote” button under the tab “References” to add more footnotes. Then copy and paste the formatted footnote from eTurabian here.
2 If you don’t need footnote, download different templates available on eTurabian Resources page.1
PART I.
TITLE
There is a blank line between the part number and title. Omit the page number on this
part-title page.
Chapter 1 (or Chapter One)
Chapter Title
Unless there are specific local guidelines for the levels of subheads, you can devise your
own typography and format as long as they are consistent throughout the dissertation.
Guidelines for Turabian Style Dissertation
General rules for the Body of Text
No orphaned title at the end of a page. If a new section starts at the bottom of the
page, insert a page break and move the title to the next page attached to the text.
Place one blank line before and after the subheads.
Example of three levels of subheads
Level 1: centered, boldface

Level 3: flush left, italic type

Placing Table or Figure
General rules on how to place the illustrations within the body of dissertation:
Use “Illustrations” under the Insert tab in Microsoft Word to create tables and figures.
Place table number and title above the table; place figure number and title under the figure.
For musical examples only , place number and title above it. One blank line between the figure / table and any text above or below. If the illustration is too big to place within the body of dissertation, place it in the
back matter as an appendix.
Next section is the back matter.
5
APPENDIXES
The back matter consists of appendixes, glossary (if not placed in the front matter), and
bibliography list. Leave two blank lines after the title “APPENDIXES” and append the document
or illustration here.
6
BIBLIOGRAPHY
Leave two blank lines after title “Bibliography” and paste the formatted bibliography list
from eTurabian here.
