Summer Affirmative Action Internship Pre-College Team Leader: Mentor The mission of the UW-Waukesha Pre-College program is to provide academic and social support for students in middle and high school. Students explore higher education options, discover college majors and careers, and build leadership skills to prepare for future opportunities. The program emphasizes the importance of higher education through academic programming and enrichment activities. The need to provide supportive service to underserved first generation and low income students in Wisconsin is essential in improving the number of students who enter the state’s universities prepared for success. UW-Waukesha has a long history of providing quality year round pre-college programming for students in grades 6-12. The University of Wisconsin – Waukesha Pre-College program goals are: Demonstrate the importance of academic rigor and its role in student success. Create an understanding of post-secondary options available, the college application process, and available financial resources. Motivate students in the pursuit of higher education and future aspirations. Develop a positive support system for students by providing mentors and role models from the campus and the community. Encourage life-long leadership skills through participation in positive activities during middle and high school. This Internship provides an opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills while working with a successful Pre-College Program that provides service to middle and high school students.

Pre-College Team Leader: MentorThe mission of the UW-Waukesha Pre-College program is to provide academic and social support for students in middle and high school. Students explore higher education options,

discover college majors and careers, and build leadership skills to prepare for future opportunities. The program emphasizes the importance of higher education through academic

programming and enrichment activities.

 The need to provide supportive service to underserved first generation and low income students in Wisconsin is essential in improving the number of students who enter the state’s universities

prepared for success. UW-Waukesha has a long history of providing quality year round pre-college programming for students in grades 6-12.

The University of Wisconsin – Waukesha Pre-College program goals are:

Demonstrate the importance of academic rigor and its role in student success.

Create an understanding of post-secondary options available, the college application process, and available financial resources.

Motivate students in the pursuit of higher education and future aspirations.

Develop a positive support system for students by providing mentors and role models from the campus and the community.

This Internship provides an opportunity to develop leadership and communication skills while working with a successful Pre-College Program that provides service to middle and high school students. The Intern will be responsible for assisting in the organization and implementation of the Pre-College Programs. The Intern will gain valuable experience and develop professional relationships with students, parents, campus faculty and staff, community members, school administrators and teachers to create positive experiences and a fun learning environment for program participants.

In addition to the duties listed above, the intern will be responsible for

Assisting in carrying out program goals as stated in the grant. Assisting in planning, facilitating and evaluating programs offered by the Pre-College

program. Assisting with day to day program operations as well as presenting and engaging youth in

multiple settings. Assisting with helping students monitor individual progress through goal setting and

documentation.

Assisting with training and guidance of the college mentor staff. Assisting with collecting and managing data utilizing access, Microsoft word and excel. Other duties as assigned to meet the program objectives and goals.

 Requirements:  

Experience and knowledge working with diverse population including youth and teens Good communication skills (verbal and written) Ability to handle challenging situations Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Excel, Access, PowerPoint Strong educational background Cumulative GPA of 3.0

Preferred Skills: Attention to detail Good customer service Organizational skills Understanding the importance of higher education Bilingual helpful (Spanish)

Start Date: May 25th, 2015

Duration: 15 weeks

Hours: 30 hours per week

Rate: $8.00 per hour/ Bi-weekly
