Thought for this week….by Rev. Nicola Callen

“No man (or woman!) is an island entire of itself” wrote John Donne.

Some people like to lead a solitary life, and some need to be with another, or others as much as possible.

I like a balance of being with people and having some time to myself.

However we are, it is almost impossible to shut oneself off entirely (Unless housebound for example). It would seem from the Bible that we are meant to be in communities of varied kinds.

A friend said recently that she was having contact with an old friend whom she sees rarely. And I have just been in touch with someone I met on a holiday 2 years ago. And I visited a close friend whom I had not seen in a very long time who had dementia. She has now died and I wish that I had gone more recently. It seems that even if a person does not know you, there can still be a connection- who are we to say there isn’t?

It is sometimes all too easy not to keep up with friends, and then the time has gone. We think - must get in touch: then leave it or delay. Relatively, life is short.

I hope that I will not delay in future - is there someone that you have been thinking of - reach for the phone - or call round - I am willing to bet that you and “they” will be pleased?

Love Nicola

Special notices and upcoming events for all…….Benefice Harvest Appeal: Send a Cow - As a Benefice, we have decided to support the Send a Cow charity for Harvest this year. Send a Cow has a new project, working in the part of Uganda with which our deanery is linked. They will be working with children who have been orphaned through the HIV/AIDS epidemic, teaching them life skills which will enable them to grow and eat nutritious food, attend school and have hope for the future. For more information, please have a look at their website: https://www.sendacow.org/project-orphans. On their Harvest Sunday's, the churches of St Aidan’s, St John’s and St Michael’s will be taking a money collection to support this charity and the work they are doing in Uganda. The churches will also continue to support our local charities through collections of non-perishable food items, which will be collected during our Harvest services. Thank you for your support. On Thursday 6th October a Holiday Bible Club Review meeting will take place at John & Linda’s home at 202a Frenchay Park Road starting at 7pm. If you are interested in being involved in the next Holiday Bible Club please contact Lizzie on 0117 9650856.

Please bring tins of food (fruit, vegetables, meat, etc), pasta, rice, cereals. (2) Internationally, we will join our Benefice partners in support of the ‘Send a Cow’ Charity. Our special harvest gifts of money will contribute towards the cost of ‘Gifts that Grow’ to help families in Africa become self-sufficient. Rob Towler.
