1. The Department

The Department of Physics is an inherent constituent of Khallikote (Autonomous) College, Berhampur which is more than a century old premier institution of Odisha. This institution started functioning from the year 1887. The Department of Physics of the college has developed in stages. Started with the intermediate stage, it was then extended to the graduate level from 1944. Physics (Hons) Course was introduced in1962 and finally shaped into a post graduate department of Physics since 1982. Subsequently in 1997-98, the Govt. of Odisha has accorded permission to open Self finance Computer Science (Hons) course in this dept. and in 2002 M.Sc. Computer science was added as a feather to its cap.

1.5.1 Staff Achievement

During all these years, many prominent personalities were associated with this department, such as Prof. L.K. Das, who from the humble beginning of lectureship in Physics worked as a Professor from 15.01.1985 to 28.12.1987 and reached the rank of Director of Higher Education (Orissa).

Prof. B.B. Swain who was once H.O.D of this Physics department is an eminent author in Physics and Electronics. Apart from these, there were three eminent Professors of this department namely Dr.S. C. Mishra, Dr. P.P. Mishra and Prof. Dr. G.C. Mohanty who become principals of this college from 1983 - 1985, 1988-90 and 2010-2012 respectively and managed this college very efficiently.

Dr. N. N. Panigrahi, H.O.D of this department and retired as Director, Text Book Bureau, Govt. of Odisha, Bhubaneswar. He is a prolific writer and has been writing science fiction and articles in different newspapers and Journals.

The list of such senior esteemed personalities is very long. Anyway it is essential to add few names of the comparatively younger generation who were once students of this college, like Dr. R.K. Choudhury, who was Director of the prestigious Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar. Prof. Dr. S.N. Sahu, an old student of this department was a faculty member of IOP and active research worker. He has been honoured recently with Samant Chandra sekher Award by Orissa Bigyan Academy for his exemplary contribution to experimental Physics. Prof. R.C.Nayak, & Prof. R.N.Sahu who were old students of this department become the Prof. & H.O.D of Physics. Dr. K. C. Pati, Reader in Physics of this department has published many research articles in Mathematical Physics and now placed as Dean in NIT, Rourkela. Dr. L.K.Tripathy of this dept. who happens to be the alumni is currently placed as Regional Director of Berhampur Zone.

The teachers of this department have been active in pursuing their Research- works, in addition to taking classes and performing several extracurricular activities. The information is in their respective C .V.s.

To improve the quality of faculty members, the authorities have been liberal in permitting teachers to attend Refresher Course and Seminars, symposia, conferences and workshops. The information is reflected in their respective C.Vs.

(B) OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS

In recent years some students of this department have come out with flying colors in different national level competitions and have been joining the research- groups in Physics and other such reputed institutions from time to time. It is pleasant to note that this trend is continuing thus, enriching the advancement of basic science. The department is in the process of preparing a data base of the student’s achievement.

A) P.G. PHYSICS

Dr.Uma Kanta Tripathy, Ex-Student of this department done his Ph.D. in IIT madras, was Asst. Professor in physics in Mc.Gill University, Montreal, Quebec(2008-2012),Tata Institute of fundamental research(2013) and now continuing as Asst. Professor of physics at Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad w.e.t 2014.

1.5.5 Seminars / Conferences/ symposia

Seminars have been conducted at U G and P.G. level will the active participation of the students. During the present year about 40 (forty) numbers of seminars were conducted. Both the teachers and the student of the department delivered talks on the topics related to recent t Trends in Physics & Computer Science.

An inter-departmental seminar on “Recent to trends in Physical Sciences” in collaboration with PG Dept. of Math was organised on 26.02.2016. Prof Dr.K.C.Pati, NIT Rourkela & Prof A. K. Mishra, UGC Emeritus professor of Berhampur University delivered talks . About 200 Students participated in the seminar held at Ganesh Conference Hall along with the faculty members of the college.

1.6 Refresher ((UGC) orientation course and refresher course)

As reflected in Curriculum Vitae of respective faculty members.

1.7 It is remarkable that, even though all the teaching-posts are not completely filled up, the teachers of this department are performing several extracurricular activities of the college over and above their work-load in the department, as listed below:-

Name of the Teacher Extracurricular activities. 1. Sri Lakshmi Kanta Das VP: +3 Science Admission, Counselor-YRC,

Legal Affairs, VP-Physical Education Association ,Advisor University Student Union

1.8 An unusual feature of this department is that B.Sc. Computer Science (Hons.) course and M.Sc. (Computer Science) course were started under this department in 1997-98 and 2002-2003 respectively as self- financing courses, as per State Govt. -Instructions. These courses are being managed well, by the active co- operation of the gazatted and non-gazatted staff-who are working very hard and over time, after performing their normal duties in the college.

Finally all efforts are being made to establish a cordial and useful relation between the students and teachers. The proctorial systems have been effectively pursued. Not only the students are assessed, the feedback from students about teachers is also acted upon effectively for improving quality of teaching. Students and teachers are actively observing Ganesh and Saraswati Puja. Also picnics are arranged jointly.

At present this department is proud of having dedicated teachers and sincere non-gazetted staff.

It is hoped that this century-old department will move forward in the proper direction, and it will be a center of excellence at the national level in the near future by receiving more incentives and developing better infrastructure.
