Review the Words of the Week

10 minutes - Classroom Instruction

Why do you think teachers request that your paper be formatted a specific way?

What is an example of a specific type of formatting?

Each department requires that essays and research be formatted a certain way to make it more efficient to grade.

For Example: In English whether it is 7th grade or PHD, your paper will need to be written in MLA format.

In history departments, whether it is 7th grade or PHS, your paper will be writin in Tura-bian.

MLA Format

MLA – Modern Language Association – primarily used in humanities (anthropology) and liberal arts (English).

Pages, Microsoft Word, or Google docs is required.

12 point Times New Roman Font or similar (Something basic and easy to read)

Double Space

One-inch margins on all sides

Indent paragraphs (5 spaces tab)

Super snowstorm roars into giddy Boston

Jane Onyanga-Omara and John Bacon, USA TODAY11:27 a.m. EST February 2, 2015

New Englanders still giddy from their football team's Super Bowl glory sobered up quickly Monday as the second monster storm in a week roared into the region, canceling flights, closing schools and shuttering many businesses.

The storm was blamed for cancellation of more than 5,400 flights and forced delay of two of the nation's biggest court cases — the murder trial of former football star Aaron Hernandez and jury selection in the trial of Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

Page 6: · Web viewThe 16.7 inches that fell in Detroit made it the Motor City's biggest snowstorm in 40 years, and the 3rd-biggest snowstorm on record in the city, according to the National

The storm blasted eastward after challenging records in the Midwest. The 16.7 inches that fell in Detroit made it the Motor City's biggest snowstorm in 40 years, and the 3rd-biggest snowstorm on record in the city, according to the National Weather Service.

In Chicago, the 19.3 inches made it the Windy City's 5th-biggest snowstorm on record.

The weather system moved slowly eastward overnight into Pennsylvania and western New York state. It then proceeded to New England, where residents barely had time to celebrate the New England Patriots' Super Bowl victory before once again breaking out the shovels and snowblowers.

Directly quoting the author in my essay is called an in-text citation and it would look like this:

Jane Onyanga-Omara and John Bacon, of USA TODAY stated, “The 16.7 inches that fell in De-troit made it the Motor City's biggest snowstorm in 40 years, and the 3rd-biggest snowstorm on record in the city, according to the National Weather Service.”

Paraphrasing (putting it in your own words) is also called an in-text citation, and it would look like either of the following:

Jane Onyanga-Omara and John Bacon of USA TODAY stated Detroit received 16.7 inches; it was the the 3rd largest snowstorm for them.

Detroit received 16.7 inches; it was the the 3rd largest snowstorm for them (Onyanga-Moara and Bacon).

Works Cited is the same as a bibliography page, but in MLA format it is called the Works Cited page.
