eplying to a recent attack on Maharashtra CM Uddhav RThackrey, NCP president Sharad Pawar said he had insisted that Uddhav Thackeray become chief minister of

Maharashtra after Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) was formed two years ago, hours after BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis claimed Thackeray covertly nurtured ambitions to become a CM but kept talking about installing a "Shiv Sainik" on the post.

Rather Pawar pulled state opposition party BJP for "keeping mum" on the issue of rising prices of fuel and accused the saffron party of not lowering rates of petrol and diesel despite a fall in the international prices of crude. Pawar successfully handles everyone and time to time

keeps them in their place. When the MVA was formed the leaders held a meeting to discuss

ll is not well between ASubodh Kumar Jaiswal and the Maharashtra

government since he spoke up against the alleged lobbying for postings by IPS officers with then Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. In December last year, Jaiswal, the then DGP of Maharashtra, went on central deputation as DG CISF and was later made the director of CBI.

Recent ly, th ings have worsened when the CBI under him issued summons to Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte and DGP Sanjay Pandey. The Mumbai Police in turn issued summons to Jaiswal to appear before them in connection with the FIR registered in the data leak case, where purported call recordings

of IPS officers lobbying for posts were leaked.

Subodh Jaiswal, after 15 years of the scam approached the Bombay High Court against strictures passed against him by a Pune court in 2007, the Maharashtra government for the first time filed a reply to Jaiswal’s petition last month, effectively reviving a matter that had gone dormant.

In 2007, when Jaiswal had approached the HC, the strictures passed against him in connection with the probe in the Abdul Karim Telgi case have stayed, and the case has remained there since then. Now, with the Maharashtra government’s reply, with the prayer that the “hearing be expedited”, the case could be taken up again, for a decision on whether the strictures against Jaiswal should be expunged.

“It is further submitted that the Bombay High Court on August 13, 2007… directed that until further orders no

adverse action will be initiated against the applicants on the basis of the observations which are under challenge in the present application.”

“In the circumstances, the Government of Maharashtra has not initiated any action on the sa id obse rva t ions , pending the decision of the Hon’ble High Court in the said matter. It is also humbly prayed that the hearing of the above peti t ion may be expedited in the interest of justice.”

Emerged from dormant after 15 yearsIt has now emerged that on , the state government September 27through Assistant IG (law & order) M Ramkumar filed an affidavit in the appeal filed by Jaiswal to expunge strictures against him. The affidavit states...

AFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI

Pawar to Power: Sharad Pawar is the saviour of Maha Vikas AghadiMoreover, Sharad Pawar will never let lose anything. The experience of NCP-Congress and manpower of ShivSena can become a lethal combination in this state and others may follow the same pattern in upcoming elections. These three have broken the ice and made it very embarrassing for BJP and Modi’s wave.

The alliance of Sena-NCP-Congress will last long as Sharad Pawar and Sanjay Raut two powerful leaders are holding the string and they will not let it collapse. If Shiv Sena is forced to forego its core Hindutva ideology of Congress forced to dilute its secular credentials etc., will not end the alliance. Uddhav made it loud and clear that his Hindutva is nationalism but not divisive political agenda.

Maharashtra is a big state with the largest Economy in India so Congress would not try to withdraw power and moreover, after losing Karnataka they would be happy with this Consolation price. The financial capital of India will be run by a hardcore Mumbaikar. Sharad Pawar will run a remote-controlled government. Alliance with Shivsena will help NCP to gain a foothold in areas Like Mumbai and Konkan and Sharad Pawar is known as a Friendly politician who would be

happy working with Thackrey’s. Congress is practically run by NCP leaders so it’s like NCP has 98 MLAs which is Enough for a strong govt until something strange happens and Govt Falls. Well, let us leave this debate to the time ahead.

Right now, important to notice is the slap given to arrogant BJP by all others. With just a day left for Shiv Sena's Uddhav Thackeray to take oath

as the new Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a senior BJP leader and former state minister has in hindsight suggested the BJP should not have taken into confidence Ajit Pawar, the nephew of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar. Ajit has always wanted to break free from the Congress shadow, while Pawar senior, given his national ambitions, has not Pawar senior still commands

<<

PAGE 1 way more respect from his party than Ajit dada does, and what is more, the young-old man holds an iron grip over his party's rank. With that, for the umpteenth time in three decades, Pawar, the uncle, prevailed over his nephew Ajit Pawar, and tactfully made him fall in line. Pawar probably knew of his nephew's awkwardness with the three-party coalition, but may not have gauged his intentions to revolt and cross over to the BJP in the manner he did. The latest bid was, by far, one of the most serious attempts by Ajit to come out of the shadow of his uncle and wrest control of the NCP. But the attempt failed for the same reasons which have existed for the past two decades since the formation of Pawar’s regional outfit, with the addition of some more.

In a political career spanning over five decades, Pawar has engineered ruptures in pol i t ica l par t ies , including his own. He has lived through defections. Ambitions are a part of political life; deceit to acquire power too – he knows it and has seen it all. What was new this time around was that the lessons from his playbook came visiting him – a split in his close-knit family and a political camp that was stopping him from forming a government in Maharashtra.

When the MVA was formed the leaders held a meeting to discuss the leadership of the alliance, Pawar was the one who insisted Uddhav Thackeray become the chief minister. Pawar is very closed to the Thackrey family, he has seen these people since their childhood. Balasaheb Thackeray and Pawar might have political differences but they were very pally with each other.

editorMask wearing is must!

Some days back spread of the Corona was mitigated. Therefore, film and drama theaters as well as some educational schools are to be reopened soon. But, at present, the number of Corona patients is increasing. Such news is read in daily newspapers. This matter is worrisome. Because, if the Corona rises again, it could lead to another lockdown for the safety of the citizens. But, re-lockdown would not be in the favour of the nation and the citizens. To getting rid from this crisis regular use of mask is must. This is a best way out. So that the increasing spread of the Corona is completely controlled.

Zubeen for Padma awardZubeen Garg is a national award-

winning singer from Assam who has

sung more than 20 thousand songs in over 30 Indian languages and has earned a name not only for himself but the entire country as well. But it is a surprise that his name has not yet made to the recommendation list for any padma award. With a career spanning almost 30 years Zubeen has helped revive many languages by gifting his magical voice. Zubeen is also an active social worker and people throng at his house in Guwahati everyday looking for help and he never turns anyone down. Assam has many things to be proud of and Zubeen's voice is surely one of them. I think it is time the Indian government recognise his contributions to not only music but to the society as a whole.

Sentiments of family-members of ailing former PM should have been

respected for not being photographed on hospital-bedIt refers to media-reports about

Daman Singh daughter of former Prime Minister Dr Man Mohan Singh

expressing her deep anguish on ignoring plea of her mother for Dr Man Mohan Singh not to be photographed on hospital-bed at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) during protocol-visit of Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on 14.10.2021, even though Daman Singh welcomed courtesy-call of Mansukh Mandaviya in his capacity as AIIMS President to traditionally enquire about health of former occupants of Constitutional Heads.

It will be better that for future, such photography for ailing former Constitutional Heads admitted in hospitals may not be allowed also to avoid risk of infection caused due to accompanying photographers and others.

Govt should reduce taxes on fuel!Petrol at over Rs.110 in Mumbai is a

shocker & govt is taking advantage of citizens because they are helpless. Rising fuel prices is the reason why inflation has reached the peak & even

tomatoes are priced near to the 3 figure mark which is a pity. Transportation is a major component when you calculate pricing of a commodity & is it not the duty of the govt to reduce taxes on fuel in a democracy when various taxes on fuel are more than 100 percent of the actual cost of fuel.

Petrol should be capped below Rs 100 per litre & raise taxes on private vehicles instead so that more & more people travel by public transport which indirectly would ease pollution & reduce global warming. People should share essential commodities like power, electricity & fuel to tackle the shortage of these essential commodities so that we are not pushed to darkness in the coming days!

rug addiction has become a Dworldwide problem today, especially in teenagers. Many

young people become dependent on different types of substances and stimulating medicines that comes hand-in-hand with narcotic effect. The life of a drug addict becomes spoiled in all aspects as they lose contact with their family and live in a completely different world. They spend a lot of money on consuming drugs, and then look for ways to earn money illegally like stealing.

The most disturbing thing about drug addiction is that people in different countries of the world are becoming addicted to all kinds of drugs. There are different types of drugs such as --- meow meow, cocaine, meth, marijuana, crack, heroin and LSD.

Heroin is one of the most dangerous drugs that suppress your heart's work and is appropriate to achieve narcotic effect.

The worst form of abuse for the human body comes from drugs. They destroy a person from inside outwards. It starts affecting the organs eventually reaching the brain and can even become fatal when taken in a large quantity or for a long time. Drugs are usually taken because they seem to be a temporary solution of a problem or they provide solace by calming the senses, but that also shows how detrimental they can prove to be to one's health. Playing with the nervous system can never turn out to be good in the longer run.

The alarming rate of drug consumption has always been a problem and has detrimental effects on the society.

Personal and family problems also lead to drug abuse among youngsters who fail to deal with their personal problems.

The physiological effects of drug addiction can be difficult to endure and this is why the drug addicts must be treated for their condition. The worst thing about drugs is that they affect the youth in every country of the world.

Drug addiction can also cause the liver to work harder, causing significant liver failure or damage. Regarding brain function, drugs can impact daily activities by causing problems with memory, decision making, mental confusion and even permanent brain damage.

As it is said, prevention is always better than cure. Hence, it is always a best option to deter people from drug abuse. Though it is practically impossible to prevent everyone from using drugs, there are things we can do to avoid drug addiction.

Here are some effective ways to prevent drug addiction:

The biggest reason why people start

talking drugs is because of their friends or colleagues who utilise per pressure. No one in this world likes to be left out, especially teenagers and youngsters. If you are in such situation, you should find a better group of friends who won't pressurise you into taking harmful things. You should plan ahead of time or prepare a good excuse to stay away from tempting situations.

Individuals suffering with any mental condition such as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, etc. should seek help from a physiatrist. There is a strong connection between mental illness and drug addiction. Those with weak emotional status may easily turn to drugs.

Consuming drugs is a waste of time. They destroy your memory and your self-respect and everything that goes along with your self-esteem. They take you to hell, disguised as heaven.

Matheran used crowdfund to mend civic hospital

group of Matheran Aresidents have started c rowdfund ing fo r

repairing the civic-run Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Hospital in the hill station.

Adil Kekoo Gandhy one of the residents who is raising funds with three others said “The hospital is small with five beds for males and five for females. It is manned by two resident doctors. It is in bad shape and we are doing crowdfunding using social media. The cost for uplifting the hospital is around 1.75 crore and 60 lakh is needed for the outpatient department. We have already got 60 lakh rupees and are starting work on the OPD.”

Gandhy said that after the makeover they would like a Professional institution to run

the hospital. Matheran has a population of 7000 and villagers from Jummapati and surrounding villages also come here. Hema Ramani of Bombay Environmental Action Group said “The hospital is not marked on the development plan of Matheran as an amenity. Once it is marked as amenity it's easier to get funds. In this case neither the MMRDA nor

Matheran Municipal Council has done anything.”

He added “Even a slightly serious patient is taken in an ambulance to Karjat, Panvel, Navi Mumbai or Mumbai. But this hospital was extensively used during Covid times and we realised that it needed an overhaul.” The hospital has an operation theatre but no equipment.

during an ongoing search operation in the forest belt of Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch and Rajouri border districts where nine soldiers were killed in two separate gunfights with terrorists over the past week officials said on Sunday.

Five Army personnel including a junior commissioned officer sacrificed lives in a fierce gunfight during a counter insurgency operat ion in Surankote forest on Monday. Four soldiers including another JCO had died in another encounter in the Mendhar sector on Thursday evening. A man along with a 45 year old woman and her son all residents of

Bhatta Durrian forest were taken into custody for questioning on the suspicion of giving logistic support to terrorists the officials said. It was a matter of investigation whether they provided food and shelter to the terrorists voluntarily or at gunpoint they said. The officials underlined that the area is mountainous and the forest is dense, which makes the ope ra t i on d i f f i cu l t and dangerous.

So far contact with hiding terrorists was established thrice first on 11th October in Poonch's Surankote which was followed by another exchange of fire between the security forces and the fleeing terrorists in the adjoining Thanamandi forest in Rajouri district the

same day but the ultras managed their escape in both the encounters. The third encounter took place in the Nar Khas forest in the Mendhar area of Poonch on Thursday evening." The presence of terrorists in the forest area connecting Poonch

and Rajouri was observed two-and-a-half months ago and accordingly tactical operations were launched to track them down," Deputy Inspector General of Police Rajouri-Poonch range Vivek Gupta said on Saturday." A joint security grid was tracking different groups of terrorists but sometimes operations take t ime depending on the topography of the area. Contact with the terrorists was established thrice this week based on intelligence inputs" the officer said. The terrorists are holed up and the joint forces are on the job to take the operation to the logical conclusion, he added. Officials said the entire forest area from Mendhar to Thanamandi

remains under a strict cordon a n d a m a s s i v e s e a r c h operation is on to neutralise the terrorists moving from one place to another in an attempt to escape the dragnet.

The Army has deployed para-commandos and a helicopter was also seen hovering over the forest area for surveillance on Saturday. Officials said the traffic between Mendhar and Thanamandi along the Jammu-Rajouri highway remained suspended for the third day on Sunday in the wake of the ongoing operation. Rajouri and Poonch in the Jammu region have witnessed a rise in infiltration attempts since June this year. Nine terrorists have been k i l led in separate encounters.

Contract killings replaced by Government killings -Raut

aunching a stinging attack on Lthe Bharatiya Janata Party and the Centre over the alleged

misuse of investigative agencies Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut on Sunday alleged that "contract killings" are now replaced by "government killings" to finish off political rivals in Maharashtra. With some ministers in the Shiv Sena led Maha Vikas Aghadi government under the scanner of the Enforcement Directorate, Income Tax and at least one of them facing a Central Bureau of Investigation inquiry Raut said

that Central investigating agencies are working as "contract killers for the party in power in Delhi".

"Is there a rule of law or (a rule of) raids in Maharashtra? This is the question which comes to one's mind considering the record-break ra ids be ing conducted through Central investigating agencies" Raut wrote in the weekly column Rokhthok in the Sena Daily Saamna of which he is the executive editor. Earlier Delhi rulers used to lie but now ordering

frequent raids have become a new business without any capital investment he stated. "Use people's money, government machinery to remove political opponents. In the past contract killings were the order of the day in Mumbai (when Underworld was active). Hitmen were hired on contract to kill rivals by gangs. This is now replaced by 'government killing'. Central investigating agencies are working as contract killers for the party in power in Delhi" Raut said.

Sri Lanka seeks loan from Indiari Lanka has sought a USD S500 million credit line from India to pay for its crude oil

purchases amid a severe foreign exchange crisis in the island nation. The move came few days after energy minister Udaya Gammanpila warned that the current availability of fuel in the island nation can be guaranteed only till next January.

T h e s t a t e - r u n C e y l o n Petroleum Corporation (CPC) owes nearly USD 3.3 billion to the two main government banks Bank of Ceylon and People's Bank. The state oil distributors imports crude from the Middle East and refined

products from other areas, including Singapore. “We are currently engaged with the Indian High Commission here to obtain the facility (USD 500 credit line) under the India-Sri Lanka economic partnership arrangement" CPC Chairman Sumith Wijesinghe was quoted as saying by local news website newsfirst.lk.

He said the facility would be utilised for purchasing petrol and diesel requirements. The energy secretaries of both India and Lanka are expected to sign an agreement for the loan soon the report quoted Finance Secretary S R Attygalle as saying.

Leicester sink Manchester & Liverpool whip Watfordeicester City fired on all Lcylinders late on to beat Manchester United 4-2 at

home in the Premier League, ending a four-match winless run and piling more pressure on visiting manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The result also ended United's record 29-game unbeaten away run in the league as they collapsed in a frantic five minute spell in the closing stages, having taken an early lead and then pulled themselves back to 2-2.

With Cristiano Ronaldo p u t t i n g i n a s u b d u e d performance up front for United it was shambolic defending that stretched their own winless run to three games in which they have taken one

point from a possible nine. Vardy was delighted after the game as Leicester bounced back from their barren spell. "It was massively important" Vardy told news reporters. "The most important thing was the performance because we had let our standards slip. We had the international break to reflect on things."

Visiting midfielder Paul Pogba

conceded United were well below par and pointed out the team lacked energy and confidence. "We deserved to lose" he said. "To be honest we have been having these kind of games for a long time. We have not found the problem conceding easy goals stupid goals. "We need to be more mature p lay wi th more experience and arrogance in a good way. We need to find something, we need to change." United had made a per fec t s ta r t as Mason Greenwood fired them into a 19th-minute lead when he unleashed a thunderbolt from 20 metres that flew into the far corner as it shaved the inside of the post.

China tested Hypersonic Missiles hina tested a nuclear Ccapab le hyperson ic m i s s i l e i n Augus t ,

showing a capability that caught US intelligence by surprise. The report late on Saturday (Oct 16) said the Chinese military launched a rocket carrying a hypersonic glide vehicle that flew through low orbit space, circling the globe before cruising towards its target which it missed by about two dozen miles.

"The test showed that China had made astounding progress on hypersonic weapons and was far more advanced than US officials realised" the report said citing people briefed on the intelligence. China's ministry of defence has not made an

official statement on this. The United States and Russia are also developing hypersonic missiles and last month North Korea said it had test-fired a newly-developed hypersonic missile.

At a 2019 parade China s h o w c a s e d a d v a n c i n g weapon r y i n c l ud ing i t s hypersonic missile, known as the DF-17. Ballistic missiles fly into outer space before returning on steep trajectories at higher speeds. Hypersonic weapons are difficult to defend against because they fly towards targets at lower altitudes but can achieve more than five times the speed of sound or about 6,200kmh (3,850 mph).

Pan-African film festival opens in Burkina Faso

frica's premier film Afest ival opened in B u r k i n a F a s o o n

weekend with a colourful c e r e m o n y s h o w c a s i n g choreography, and acrobatic and musical acts from some of the continent's biggest names, including Senegalese Grammy nominee Baaba Maal.

With a backdrop of Islamic militant attacks in the Sahel West African nation and the coronavirus pandemic, the glitzy ceremony saw a tribute to the country's Military and to f o r m e r p r e s i d e n t a n d revolutionary leader Thomas Sankara. The festival initially was planned for February, but

was postponed as Burkina Faso battled a surge in coronavirus cases.

" I t was impor tant to postpone the festival" Alex Moussa Sawadogo, delegate-general of the festival, said during the opening ceremony saying it would not have been possible to get the quality of films selected had it been held in February. Burkina Faso President Roch Marc Kabore in a post on Twitter said it was with pride that he gave the opening clap of the 27th edition of the Pan-African Film and Television Festival of Ouagadougou. The holding of this biennial of African cinema in a dual context of security and health challenges, testifies to the resilience and selflessness of the Burkinabe people" Kabore said.

FESPACO launched in 1969, is monitored by global industry players who scout the event for new films, productions, talents and ideas.

Czech car makers to make 2.50k carszech car makers will Cproduce quarter a million fewer cars than expected

this year due to the global shortage of chips and the automotive sector will lose 200 billion crowns (US$9.14 billion) in sales, the Auto Industry Association (AutoSAP) said on Sunday.

AutoSAP said domestic passenger car production dropped by 53.1% in September year on year, to 56,157 cars. It said the chip shortage impact would exceed that of pandemic shutdowns last year and called on the government to activate an aid programme created amid the

coronavirus pandemic last year to compensate firms for wages of idled workers. AutoSAP said production rose 2.9per cent year on year cumulatively in the January-September period to 831,653 cars.

"Already since August, production has been significantly affected by output curbs and the September statistic confirms the negative trend" AutoSAP said. The country's biggest producer, Volkswagen's Skoda Auto, has said it would significantly limit or shut production at its Czech plants from next week, possibly until the end of the year. The car

sector is the backbone of the highly industrialised Czech economy employing 180,000 workers and makes up a quarter of industrial output. SAP said 120 billion crowns in revenue would be lost at car makers and a further 80 billion at parts suppliers. The 200 billion crowns in revenue equals to about 3.3per cent of the country's expected nomina l gross domestic product this year. The other car makers with assembly plants in the Czech Republic are Hyundai - which has been the least affected by the chip shortage and Toyota.

Sadat's nephew negotiates way out for Egypt prisoners

he fate of dissidents Tlanguishing in Egypt's prisons has long been

under scrutiny, but one veteran is leveraging his political prowess in a bid to have them released. Mohamed al-Sadat (66) nephew of former president Anwar al-Sadat the first Arab leader to strike peace with Israel has long been a fixture of Egypt's political scene.

Today he has become an u n o f f i c i a l n e g o t i a t o r advocating on behalf of figures i m p r i s o n e d u n d e r t h e u n c o m p r o m i s i n g administration of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. "Dialogue with the state's institutions isn't just a one man job there are many others in close contact but lately we've been successful in using a language that is being listened to," he told AFP in his plush office in an upscale Cairo suburb." This has been effective in some cases (of political prisoners) being re-examined" he said.46 prisoners were freed

in July, including prominent activists such as rights lawyer Mahienour el-Massry.

But as many as 60k political prisoners are serving time in Egyptian jails, according to human rights defenders. Sisi a former Army chief became President in 2014 after leading the military ouster of Islamist president Mohamed Morsi a year earlier. He has since o v e r s e e n a s w e e p i n g crackdown on dissent.

Those jailed for criticising the political status quo have included academics, journalists, lawyers, activists, comedians, I s l a m i s t s , p r e s i d e n t i a l candidates and MPs. But Sadat is less concerned about the conditions that led to their arrest than with securing their release. "There's a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes in these security agencies where they undertake an examination of specific cases that we've r a i sed whethe r f rom a h u m a n i t a r i a n o r l e g a l perspective" he explained.

Pakistani Taliban a Cause of Concern For Islamabad

he attacks carried out Tby Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) aka

Pakistan Taliban have increased to the highest level in over four years as the US left Afghanistan and the Afghan Taliban took power. TTP has been emboldened by the developments in next-door Afghanistan. This has complicated the internal security scenario for Pakistan as the country is also fighting the Baloch insurgency in its province of Balochistan. It was believed for some time now that TTP has been marginalized and in disarray. As Pakistan army operations had ousted the Taliban insurgents from their most prized tribal sanctuary. But now this terror soutfit has experienced a reversal of fortunes, through the merger of various splinter factions and change of circumstances

in Afghanistan. Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan renewed its pledge of allegiance to the Afghan Taliban after the fall of Kabul. Also, the Afghan Taliban freed hundreds of TTP operatives, including the group’s deputy leader, Maulvi Faqir Mohammad, who was detained by Afghan authorities in 2013. And was jailed in Pul-E-Charki prison situated on the outskirts of capital Kabul. A U.N. Security Council report in July 2021 estimated the TTP had 6,000 trained fighters on the Afghan side of the border.

Pakistani deep state has asked the Afghan Taliban to help in negotiations with the TTP. Presumably, to facilitate formal talks, Pakistan’s government offered amnesty if TTP leaders would disarm their fighters and accept the constitution as the supreme law of the land. This offer has

been rejected by TTP on the grounds that there can be no dialogue with the state unless sharia law is fully implemented in the country. While Pakistan still expects its Afghan Taliban allies to rein in the TTP. Taliban leaders have no pressing reason to alienate their TTP allies—a calculus that exposes the Taliban to charges of betraying the jihadist project and risking dissension in its own ranks by bowing to Pakistan’s demands. Also, the Afghan Taliban’s leverage over the Pakistani Taliban is limited as well. Even If the Afghan Taliban tried to force the TTP, on persuasion from Pakistan then some of its commanders can join Islamic State Khorasan (ISK). Moreover, TTP’s rhetoric is consistent with the Afghan Taliban’s stand of not recognizing the Durand Line as a legitimate

border and opposing its fencing by Pakistan because it has divided the Pashtun tribes. Hence Afghan Taliban doesn’t want to make TTP an enemy.

TTP’s emir, Mufti Nur Wali Mehsud is working extensively to revive the group by bringing in those who had parted ways with the TTP since 2014. He is able to unite many old commanders and their groups under the banner of TTP. In July 2020 Hakimullah Mehsud Group headed by commander Mukhlis Yar and Amjad Farouqi group has joined the ranks. In August last year the Ameer Usman Saifullah Kurd group of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, headed by Maulvi Khush Muhammad Sindhi also joined. Most importantly the two major and violent Taliban factions Jamaat-ul-Ahrar (JuA) under Omar Khalid Khurasani and Hizb ul-Ahrar (HuA) led by Omar Khurasani re-joined the TTP conglomerate last year. TTP is not a monolith. In December 2007, about 13 groups united under Baitullah Mehsud to form the organization. Current leader Noor Wali Mehsud realizes the fact that TTP cannot work as a centralized organization. Any attempts to impose greater control and central decision-making from the higher leadership had been one of the main causes of the group’s disintegration in the past. So, he has adopted a more

‘federal’ approach to rebuilding the TTP, allowing the junior commanders to retain a large degree of autonomy under the TTP umbrella. As a result of this approach, the majority of the splinter groups have now come back together, and most of the remaining ones are negotiating with Noor Wali.

Hence with its allies coming to power in Kabul and strengthing of its own organizational structure. Pakistani Taliban poses a much greater risk for Islamabad. As a matter of fact, Tehreek-I-Taliban Pakistan still remains the largest militant group in Pakistan. The real operational strengths of the Pakistan Taliban are its affiliates and support networks, which still exist inside Pakistan and neighboring Afghanistan. They may not be able to control large swaths of territory in tribal areas as they used to do till 2014. But can definitely launch a new wave of terrorist attacks across Pakistan if not checked in time. It will be right to say that Pakistan Taliban is rising from the ashes and no longer wants to lie low and keep a low profile it’s getting bolder with each passing day. Also, they see Afghan Taliban as a role model and aspire to adopt their pathway which TTP thinks will lead it to success one day. It is high time that Pakistan's national security apparatus takes the threat of TTP seriously and comes up with a good strategy to tackle it.

MONDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2021AFTERNOON VOICE, MUMBAI 11Different Strokes

ecently, a report jointly Rprepared by Ireland's agency Concern

Worldwide and Germany's organization Welt Hunger Hilfe, India has been ranked 101 out of 116 countries in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2021, which is the highest among the countries describing a bad situation.

In 2020, India was ranked 94 out of 107 countries, in which there has been a decline. As per the 2021 rankings, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal have performed better than India. This means that these countries have proved to be better than India in providing food to their citizens. In the report, the level of hunger in India has been described as 'alarming'.

India's GHI score has also dropped. It was 38.8 in the year 2000, which ranged from 28.8-27.5 between 2012 and 2021. It has been said in this index that India is the country with the highest child wasting where people have been badly affected by the Kovid-19 epidemic and the restrictions imposed due to it.

The GHI score is calculated on four parameters, including undernourishment, malnutrition, child growth rate and child mortality. According to the report, the rate of child wasting in India has increased from 17.1 percent between 1998 and 2002 to 17.3 percent between 2016 and 2020.The report said that India has shown improvement in other parameters such as child mortality, prevalence of child stunting and prevalence of undernutrition due to inadequate food. The report said that 18 countries, including China, Brazil and Kuwait, topped the list with GHI scores less than five. India's fierce opponent China is not only ahead of India's partner, BRICS country Brazil is also far ahead of India. In such a situation, there is a big challenge for India that the country which we are moving towards making the world guru, that country has to be tempted to have bread for two times.

Goal 2 of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda aims to eliminate hunger and all forms of malnutrition, and double the productivity of agriculture.

Sustainable food production and farming methods will be

nutritional level among school children, which has a direct and positive impact on enrollment, retention and attendance in schools. Antyodaya Anna Yojana also by the government It is being run whose objective is to provide food to poor families at subsidized prices. Whose benefit is also visible and is playing an important role in giving bread for two times to many poor.

POSHAN Abhiyaan, launched in 2017-18, aims to reduce the incidence of stunting, malnutrition, anemia and low birth weight in infants through synergy and convergence of various programmes, better monitoring and better community support. The Integrated Child Development Scheme envisages comprehensive early childhood care and development with a focus on children in the age group 0-6 years, pregnant women and adolescent girls. Under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Rs 6,000 is directly transferred to the bank accounts of pregnant women so that they can get better facilities for delivery.

It has been the irony of India that despite having a huge stock of food grains, a large number of people also suffer from starvation. If we examine the reasons for this, then factors like lack of coordination between the central and state governments, inefficient bureaucracy, corrupt systems and wastage of food due to lack of storage capacity come to the fore. This has been going on for a long time and the government has failed to find a solution. In such a situation, the problem of starvation has become even more dire in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic. Fortunately, we have mountains of food, whose quick and judicious use can solve this crisis to a great extent. But the challenge of its distribution has to be solved. Otherwise, a large population of India will be saved from Corona but will not be able to face hunger.

remains hungry. Two-thirds of these helpless people live in Asia.If we do not think deeply about the world's food and agricultural systems, it is estimated that by 2050 the number of people suffering from hunger will reach two billion. Worldwide, the number of undernourished people in the developing region has decreased by almost half since 1990. It was 23.3% in 1990-1992 which came down to 12.9% in 2014-2016. But 79.5 crore people are still undernourished.

The burden of hunger still remains the highest on South Asia. 281 crore undernourished people comprise 40 percent of India's population. How we grow and eat our food has a profound effect on the level of hunger, but it does not end here. If done properly, agriculture and forests can be good sources of income for the world's population, drivers of rural development and our protectors from climate change. Agriculture is the single largest employment sector in the world, employing 40% of the world's population and 54.6% of the total labor force in India.

Talking in the context of India, according to a report of NITI Aayog, the situation of starvation is very serious in almost all the states except a few states in the country.

Various efforts are being made by India at the national

level to get rid of hunger, but the performance of most of the states is not as expected. There are only five such states which are doing the best job of tackling the problem of hunger. These five states are Punjab, Kerala, Goa, Mizoram and Nagaland. While Jharkhand, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Meghalaya and Rajasthan, this problem continues to be a problem. The performance of many states including Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka is doing well in getting rid of the problem of hunger. The state governments have failed to end hunger, a major reason for this failure is believed to be the states and the population of the country.

It is not that the Government of India has not done any work to remove hunger, but the Government of India has made continuous efforts through its various policies and schemes, but till now the result has come like three layers of the same shield. India had launched the National Nutrition Strategy which aims to reduce the cases of malnutrition in India. The National Nutrition Mission monitors the development of children as well as checks the theft of food rations provided in Anganwadi centres. The Mid-Day Meal Scheme launched in schools aims to improve the

needed to continuously make nutritious food accessible to all.

If we think of SDG targets, then India's position cannot be considered good at all.

Because this was the situation, India would be completely unsuccessful in achieving Goal 2 of the Sustainable Development Agenda. The goal is to eliminate malnutrition in all its forms by 2030, including the internationally agreed target of stunting and impairment in children under 5 by 2025. Apart from this, the objective is also to meet the nutritional needs of adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating mothers and elderly people.

It is important that all the countries of the world work towards achieving the SDGs so that the whole world can achieve these goals. 17.7% of the world's population lives in India, that is, if there is no sustainable development of life of India and Indians, then this goal will not be achieved worldwide, and for India's good performance, it is necessary that every government do better work in the field.

To end hunger, it has to be ensured that everyone has access to good quality food in sufficient quantity to lead a healthy life.

Despite the availability of enough food to fill the stomach of every person in the world, today one in every nine people

Mallu film Industry mourningt's been a week after the Idemise of legendary Actor Nedumudi Venu who

passed into the ages on Monday; the Malyalam Industry is still to recover from the great loss. The Kerala film fraternity pays tributes.

Actor Jayasurya says “He was a legend. He was a soulful actor. He has done a staggering gallery of characters. He knows how to hold a character's soul. I would say he is a very lucky person to have died with his boots in. Until his last he was in this industry and he was doing a film too. He could act with the new generation of actors... he was like wine. He got better with age. He kept changing his acting pattern throughout the years legends never die.”

Actor Roshan Mathew “I have known Venu Sir mostly only though his work. And all the respect I have for him

comes from that. And from a few of his interviews and talks I have watched. I was fortunate enough to work in a movie with him, but I did not get to interact with him past a basic introduction or have any scenes with him. My misfortune.”

Director Sajin Baabu griefs “Nedumudi Venu sir was a great artist. In his 30s he started acting roles of elder characters. As elder brother, father grandfather etc. He was a very flexible artiste

wonderful actor. For me when I think of Malayalam actors, the first faces that come to mind are Mammootty sir, Mohanlal Sir then Nedumudi Venu Sir and Thilakan Sir.

Director Bejoy Nambiar said “He was a legend. The diversity of his performances should be studied by film enthusiasts. He has left behind a legacy of iconic characters.” Sound designer and filmmaker Resul Pookutty remembers “He was family to me. I can't think of Malayalam cinema without Nedumudi Venu. He was so much part of our life. We as Malayalees relate to him as our brother or uncle or grandfather or a distraught king. From the multitude of characters he played, he made us feel a part of every character. His passing affects us so much as we feel we lost not just an actor but a part of us! Om Shanti.

Fussing Aryan Khan's case comparisons begin

hah Rukh Khan's son SAryan Khan who is still in Arrest. The Industry

trances in the case of Bharti Singh and Haarsh Limachiyaa. Their Advocate was found quoting “Bharti and Haarsh had much higher quantities of drugs on them. Citing the example of Bharti-Haarsh's case, he revealed how he managed to keep his clients away from the bars. Ayaz mentioned that he ensured that the couple went into jail custody instead of the custody of the Narcotics Control Bureau. They were produced in court on Sunday I immediately applied for jail custody although the NCB wanted to take custody. Not for Bharti but they were insisting on Haarsh's custody. They could've investigated a lot through Haarsh so I made sure I got them jail custody on the first day so that they are out of NCB custody. Getting them into JC meant we could get bail the next day now the case is pending” Ayaz Khan said.

Explaining why he chose this option the advocate added “Because you don't know what angles can open up in

the investigation. Sometimes you can fabricate evidence sometimes you can plant evidence sometimes you can knock out statements. Right or wrong can only be proved after the trial.” Ayaz said the NCB had found 80 gms of contraband in Bharti and Haarsh's office and home. For the uninitiated last year NCB conducted a raid at comedian Bharti Singh's house in connection with the drug probe being carried out after Sushant Singh Rajput's death.

The couple was later taken for interrogation where they admitted to the consumption of Ganja. Bharti and Haarsh were arrested under the provisions of the NDPS Act in a case of alleged possession and consumption of Ganja. Later they were released on bail. Talking about Aryan Khan's case, a special court for Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act cases would pass an order on Aryan's bail plea on 20th October.

HFPA: Golden Globes 2022 with NBC boycott

he Hollywood Foreign TPress Association declared recently that it

will announce Golden Globes nominations and winners in early 2022 recognizing film and TV work in 2021 despite an ongoing boycott of the organization by a large coalition of publicists, as well as numerous major studios networks and talent due to concerning demographic and ethical shortcomings exposed by a Daily Times last February. National Broadcasting Company which currently owns the broadcasting rights for the Golden Globe Awards stated in May that it will not air the show in 2022 arguing that the “meaningful reform” that it expects from the HFPA “takes time and work and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.”

So it remains to be seen what the Golden Globes would look like without a broadcasting partner and participating talent perhaps a

press release? Since the last Golden Globe Awards back on 28th Feb the HFPA has significantly overhauled its bylaws most notably banning complimentary travel and gifts for its members and it also added 21 new members six of them Black. But the organization did not revoke the accreditation of any of its existing members more than a few of whom are seen as problematic by groups boycotting the HFPA; not least due to inactivity as journalists.
