How to Make Your Photos Stand Out from the Crowd Malcolm Fackender has been involved with and successful at amateur photography since a young teenager, winning a Gold Medal in the Sydney Morning Herald Schools Photographic Competition in 1985. Growing up in a family of photographers, it was only natural that Malcolm would follow in the footsteps of his father and uncle and learn the art of nature photography. In particular, Malcolm has always had a strong interest in macro and bird photography. Having been involved directly and indirectly with Photographic clubs for over 25 years, Malcolm previously held the position of President at Dooleys Camera Club. In this role, Malcolm was always eager to share the knowledge he has gained over the years with the members of the club as well as any other photographers and photographic clubs he associates with. Malcolm regularly conducts educational and inspirational photographic talks at various photographic clubs. Malcolm has more recently developed a strong interest in travel photography, where he has broadened his photographic interests to cover many other genres. He is particularly interested in South-East Asia where he has taken in excess of 100,000 images over the past five years. Through his company Spotlight on Asia, and with the assistance of local and international travel agencies, Malcolm has successfully planned, arranged and lead ten small group photographic tours to Vietnam and Cambodia, with further tours scheduled in the future. Due to popular demand, Malcolm will soon be releasing details of the first of a series of tours into China. Being passionate about photography, travel and just being around and inspiring fellow photographers, Malcolm intends to build his business to include many more countries in the years to come.

FJKF After an extended break from competition photography, Malcolm has entered his photographs into numerous national and international photographic competitions in Australia over the last six years, receiving a number of awards, including prizes at the Taralga Rodeo and silver and bronze medals in national competitions. Not being a prolific entrant of competitions, Malcolm actually gets much more joy out of inspiring and teaching people than receiving awards. There is no greater joy than seeing the success his customers have with their tour photographs on returning to Australia. Malcolm enjoys taking photographs and extending himself wherever possible. He believes that photography is a cycle of continuous improvement from a technical, hardware and creative perspective and as such looks forward to growing for many years to come. How to make your photograph stand out from the crowd is the topic of Malcolm’s presentation. This will be an interactive presentation in which people will be encouraged to offer comments and feedback as we make our way through 26 points for improving our photography. We will look at why a photograph will appeal to one person, yet not another. We will talk about what you can do to enhance your images, be it in camera or post production. We will gain an understanding of composition. At the end of the night everyone will be inspired and should look at their images in a completely different way.

Hi Everyone, Our Workshop Night for July will be one of general interest. The Main presentation will be "The Lightmeter in your camera and the Ansell Adams Zone System". This will be presented by myself. I will explain the use of the Zone System to enable correct exposure to be obtained in difficult lighting conditions. After the break, we have two great sessions being conducted:

Ian Pinder will conduct a practical demonstration of off-camera flash. This will be one for the portrait photographers amongst us.

Dianne English will conduct a practical demonstration of Macro Photography. Dianne will go through the steps she uses for her fantastic macro work and will have some of her prints on display to explain how she does it.

Should be a great night, See you there, Bob Cook Training Coordinator

Weekday Social Event - May 2011

On our May outing to Mount Tomah Botanic Gardens, we were blessed with beautiful weather and sunshine. We had a great turn out with about 20 members who came to the gardens, which boast beautiful scenery and views across the valley to the mountains beyond. The Blue Mountains Botanic Garden is the cool-climate garden of the Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust. It covers 28 hectares on the summit of a basalt-capped peak 1000 metres above sea level in the world heritage listed Greater Blue Mountains. The theme of this Garden emphasises cool-climate plants from around the world, especially those from the southern hemisphere. With the sun out, we were fortunate to have warmth on our side, with many members photographing the some glorious autumn colour. There were some trees in full autumn bloom, although many more were yet to turn, despite the sporadic flushes of colour, we managed to take some beautiful photos.

Please check the club reminder notice for details of our next outing, or e-mail Deanna on [email protected]. If any members have photographs from our weekday outings that could be included in the outing reports, please forward to me by email. Thank you, Deanna.

FJKF Non-Destructive Dodge and Burn Process After my demonstration of the Dodge and Burn tools in Photoshop, Sam Bihancov told me of a different method that is non-destructive i.e. it works on a separate layer above the image.

1. Open an Image in Photoshop

2. Create a new layer, title this "Dodge and Burn"

3. Set the Blending mode on the Dodge and Burn layer to Overlay

4. In the Tools palette, change the Foreground Colour to 50% Brightness

5. Fill the new layer with 50% grey using the Fill (Paint Bucket) tool

6. In the Tools palette, reset the Foreground and Background colours to Black and

White

7. Select a brush and paint on the Dodge and Burn layer

Where you paint black, the image goes darker (burning) where you paint white, the image goes lighter (dodging) To undo the effect, set the brush to 50% grey and paint again If you need BLACK then duplicate the Dodge and Burn layer There is a video Tutorial on the club web site in the Training area, under Photoshop, Non-Destructive Dodge and Burn

How and why did you start in photography? I developed an interest in photography about 6 or 7 months ago because I wanted to produce something more than the usual snapshots & postcards What camera do you use and what is your favourite lens at the moment ? I have a Nikon D90 and my favourite lens is my latest acquisition, a Sigma 17-50 f/2.8. What are your photographic goals ? My photographic goal is to find the time to take more photographs ! What does being a member of the CHRSL Photography Club mean to you? I have learned a great deal since joining CHRSL Photography Club mainly because everyone is always willing to share their knowledge and experience. Are you drawn to any one type of photography (landscape, portrait, macro etc.) and why? I enjoy portrait photography especially candid shots of family and friends and also intend to learn more about macro which I find quite intriguing. Do you have a “photographic moment/adventure” to share ? My latest photographic 'moment' is the loss of more than 900 images due to a computer

malfunction. From now on I will print all my favourites and burn them to DVD. What do you do in your "real" life? In my 'real life' I work as a CNC programmer/machinist, have been married for 42 years ( to the same wonderful lady ! ) have three children and five grandchildren. I am also a keen flyfisher. Do you have any suggestions for the Photography Club ? A suggestion for the club would be to purchase items such as a monitor calibrator or mattboard cutter which could be loaned to members for a nominal fee.

Nick Melidonis Workshops Don't miss the opportunity to attend two one day sessions with one of Australia's most creative and awarded photographers. Nick is an engaging and inspirational speaker; his images touch the heart and he is also regarded as one of Australia's most experienced and dynamic photo educators. Nick's Sydney workshops in 2010 were very popular and he will return again in July 2011 to share his passion and techniques. Travel and Landscapes for the Eye, Mind and Spirit - Saturday July 9th In this one day seminar, Nick will outline techniques to develop your eye in seeing and creating stunning travel and landscape images. You will learn his personal approach to people and scenic travel images for pleasure and profit and his Photoshop and Lightroom techniques behind some of his award winning landscape images. This seminar will be a ‘must see’ visual and learning experience. Lightroom Secrets Revealed- One day hands-on workshop -Sunday July 10th Lightroom is one of the most intuitive programs for photographers to (i) import captured images, (ii) set up a Data Asset Management workflow (no more lost images), (iii) work on RAW and other image files to undertake global and local enhancements and (iv) export files for final adjustments (if required) into Photoshop. You will learn how to master all these steps. Nick will also teach you how Lightroom can prepare images for photo-stitching and High Dynamic Range (HDR) composites for later work in Photoshop, and how you can undertake a range of special effects, e.g. preparing slideshows. This workshop will release the awesome power of this amazing program and you will probably find you are spending less time in Photoshop as a result. The workshop will focus mainly on the library and develop modules in Lightroom as photographers will be concentrating most of their time on these. General Information

Photo Tip of the month

WILD LIGHT

Light is absolutely one of the most important things to consider. No light, no photograph! Different light conditions suit different subjects. For example, overcast light may not

work for a summer beach shot, but it is great for rainforests, especially during or after light rain. Early morning and late afternoon is usually the best time to take photos, as the light has great warmth and softness. Uluru (Ayers Rock) doesn't actually change colour, it's the changing colour

temperature of the light that makes it appear so radiantly red at sunset.

One thing to be careful of is 'blue sky mentality'. In Australia we are blessed with lots of blue skies, and this can become

boring in photographs as the sky often makes up a large part of an image. Cloudy light or wild, moody light can test your patience, but when the breaks happen you can get

great emotion in a shot. Times of wild light are when I often speak to God, asking (respectfully!) such things as, "What are you up to?" or "Come on, give me a break - please!"
