Our RJR Volunteers are the Best!

They worked hard over the summer to help our teachers and staff prepare for the upcoming school year. Many have also spent hoursthese first few weeks devoting their time to various activities throughout the school. Here is a sampling of our volunteers’ accomplishments and contributions:

Thanks to Lin Johnson, Shannon Reed, Laura Burrows, Gina Caudill and all our writers and contributors for another outstanding PTSA newsletter! If you need another copy of the newsletter, please look for it on our PTSA web page within the RJR website or pick up a copy in the main office.

Jane Aves rallied parents and students to stuff, fold, sticker and label the newsletters in preparation for mailing to every RJR family. We thank Brittany Aves, Jonatha Aves, Marissa Avens, Hope Bray, Becca Gwyn, Lynn Gwyn, Laura Jaworski, Penny Johnson, Lori Jones, Karen Lordeman-Rowdy, Kelly McNeil, Maddi Swindle, Jennifer Weldon, Lisa Dull, Bethany Ebbitt, Jody Ebbitt, Zoe Ebbitt, JJ Hoots, Eliza Hopkins and Rachel Kiger for their hard work in getting the newsletters ready to mail!

Legacy Chairs, Mickey and Tom Kangur and assistant chairs, Julie and Fred Williams updated our Legacy Campaign materials, stuffed, labeled, mailed and again ensured that every family received a Legacy packet. Lynn Gwyn continues to track donations, make deposits, and interact with Gina Caudill and Tammy Caudle who maintain our PTSA membership database.

Our PTSA hosted the fourth annual (and very well attended!) 9th Grade Parent Social with many PTSA board members on hand to welcome new parents and answer their questions.

Michelle Caldwell worked with teachers Nikel Bussolati and David McCulloch to plan an informative and successful 9th Grade Orientation program. Fifty “Demon Delegate” student leaders welcomed and guided freshmen throughout the day’s activities.

Michelle Caldwell handled the planning, communication and logistics for our Open House and PTSA general membership meeting. RJR’s Color Guard kicked off the event with presentation of the colors, followed by recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. The Marching Band, A Capella groups and Dancing Boots entertained, ushered, greeted, answered questions and directed families throughout the evening. Lisa Carter stepped in to help keep the evening flowing smoothly. Production Manager, Ed Thomas ensured, as always, that our program went off without a hitch. A big round of applause for all these wonderful representatives of the RJR community!

Members of our Student Services Committee served many summer hours answering phones, directing guidance office traffic, packaging schedule exception reports, filing, stuffing envelopes and manning tables at Open House. Thank you Tricia Walls, Joan Borick, Deborah Casstevens, Lisa Dull, Kathy McLean, Megan Erickson, Kathleen Tatter, Becky Beeson,

Lynn Gwyn, Suzanna Watkins, Robin Woodard, Joy Troxell, Lisa Rowell, Katie Satterwhite, Jennifer Green, Katherine Watts, Jean Anne Semke, Melissa Yates, Lee Hatling, Jody Ebbitt, Laura Dean and Carla Hoots.

Karen Rice ensured our Demon Shop was stocked and ready for business. Kelly Harris, Robin Welch, Carla Hoots, Margaret Wray, Beth Gunter, Anna Fadel and Shawn Bowman Hicks helped staff before-school events, and with summer orders.

Portia Probst agreed to take over responsibility for purchasing and restocking stadium concessions. We thank Portia and the army of volunteers who have helped clean, man and support the concession stand efforts so far this year.

A very special group of folks devote their time as volunteer coaches each season. This fall we thank Defonzio Willis, Michael James and Craven Knotts for helping out with football, and Ben Orrell for being part of the men’s soccer coaching team.

Robin Woodard, our Parent Pages webmaster, updated all the PTSA and Booster Club pages in preparation for the school year. She also set up a calendar on the website with dates for many important events in and around RJR. Please refer to this calendar to keep up with what is happening at RJR!

Ashby Hopkins and Corinne Ward did not wait for school to start before they began making plans for our Homecoming tailgate party. Homecoming is October 10th.

The grounds look beautiful! During the summer months, Building and Grounds Committee members spent many hours weeding, planting, pruning, spreading mulch and sprucing up RJR’s campus. Thanks especially to Lynn Gwyn, Kathryn Spanos, Robin Woodard, Harrison Bullock, Sandy Bullock, Michael Bullock, Gabriel Bullock, Angie Ogburn and Colin Ogburn for their commitment to these tasks.

Our dynamic Hospitality Committee (Karen O’Brien, Shannon Meinberg Jacquelyne Pesavento and Elizabeth Morgan), assisted by nearly 60 Cooks-on-Call, continues to “wow” our incredibly deserving faculty. In addition to hosting the traditional “welcome back” teacher breakfast, this group also coordinated teacher/student “Demon Delegate” lunch at Freshman Orientation. They also coordinated collection of school supplies for RJR students. Amazingly, all of these events transpired within a calendar week!

Finally, we want to thank everyone who has completed a volunteer sign- up form. If YOU have not filled one out yet, copies are available in the main office and Students Services. You can also download one from our website.

Students will arrive at their tutoring sessions with specific assignments to complete or review. No planning by the tutor is required. You can specify with what subjects you feel most comfortable. If you have questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Deborah Casstevens ([email protected]) or Shannon Meinberg ([email protected]). THANK YOU!
