Sociologist Poster PresentationInstructions

By facilitating informal discussion between presenters and their audience, Adobe Voice/poster sessions provide a more intimate forum for exchange then do regular paper presentations. Ideally, a well-constructed poster or Adobe Voice presentation will be self-explanatory and free you from answering obvious questions so that you are available to supplement and discuss particular points of interest. Successful poster presentations are those which achieve both coverage and clarity.

Topic

Groups will be creating posters and presenting, OR presenting an Adobe Voice presentation, on one of 10 famous sociologists from history. Groups will chronicle the individual’s life and their contributions to the study of Sociology. Groups should detail the person’s general area of expertise in relation to Sociology, any major findings/breakthroughs, the influence their work has had on the field of Sociology, and, to a lesser extent, their biographical information. All information presented should be done so in a chronological fashion.

Coverage

Have you provided all the obvious information? Will a casual observer walk away understanding your major findings after a quick perusal of your materials? Will a more careful reader learn enough to ask informed questions?

Ask yourself-“What will I need to know if I were viewing this material for the first time?” And then state the information clearly.

Clarity

Is the sequence of information evident? Indicate the ordering of your material with numbers, letters or arrows, when necessary. Is the content being communicated clearly? Keep It Simple. Place your major points in the poster and save the non-essential, but interesting sidelights for informal discussion. Be selective. Your final conclusions or summary should leave observers focused on a concise statement of your most important findings.

Guidelines

POSTER: Groups should create their posters adhering to the Poster Guideline handout. Each category/topic should be included on the poster in order to earn full credit. Also, headings for each category/topic should be clearly labeled and visible from 6 feet away. Information should be clearly posted and typed. In certain circumstances, information may be neatly handwritten. Graphics, pictures, charts should all be included in the poster. Any image pertaining to the individual, or their work, should have a short caption underneath it.

PRESENTATION: Groups should prepare to present their poster and findings to the class. Presentations will consist of an explanation of the poster/individual, as well as any relation to Sociology. Groups should elaborate on their topic, going into depth about the information provided on the poster. Groups should plan to speak between 7-10 minutes on their topic. All members of groups must present a portion. Notecards or any other aids are

permissible. Group members should prepare to answer questions from the audience at the end of their presentation.

WORKS CITED PAGE: In lieu of a written assignment to accompany the poster/presentation, groups MUST hand in a works cited page. The works cited page will include any texts, books, articles, websites, etc. that provided information to the project. Along with information, any graphics, pictures, or charts used must also be cited. The page should be typed, size 12 font, Times New Roman, and it should be double spaced. Students must follow the ASA Style of citation (*see ASA handout).
