CARELETTER

OCTOBER2016

From the Pastors’ Desk

For this reason (Paul’s love for Timothy’s and his faith) I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within you through the laying on of my hands; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-discipline.

1 Timothy 1:6-7

Grace to you and peace from God the Father and from our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

October has arrived and I feel as if things are beginning to move very quickly towards the end of a church year. Fall programming is now well and fully underway with Sunday School, Confirmation, and Milestone Ministries for the kids, and Bible Studies and Mission projects for the adults. Like St. Paul, I commend and love the parish for its faith. I also urge you to constantly rekindle the light of Christ inside you so that all may see what the Lord is doing through our congregations.

As the winds begin to blow from the North they bring more than cooler temperatures, they bring change and opportunity to be rekindled. We have a couple of new offerings for the parish this month. The first is a discussion group on the movie “The War Room” which will be held Sunday afternoons at 4:00 p.m. at First Lutheran. This movie is about faith, and prayer, and the power of both to overcome the pain that we cause to others due to our own selfishness, especially the damage we do to our spouses. The second is an outing for our Sunday School kids to the Pumpkin Patch in Glenvil on October 23rd. This is a great opportunity to invite friends to come and see how Lutherans do fun and fellowship! The third is our Reformation Celebration on the 30th. Prince of Peace and First Lutheran will have Polka Services and an Oktoberfest following worship. St. John’s will host a Beer and Hymns sing-a-long at the Ohiowa Café on Sunday evening, further details will be shared on these events as those dates draw closer.

There is indeed a lot of change blowing in the wind; politically, financially, and personally for many people. I think it behooves us to keep the nation in our prayers even as we keep each other lifted up throughout this harvest season of poor prices. As November draws nearer some very significant issues will be decided. Not only for who will become commander-in-chief but also socially. In Nebraska the death penalty is back on the ballot and as Christians who believe that life is a gift from God and so is not something to be used or taken lightly, we need to have a candid discussion before going to the polls. This conversation is not intended to sway one way or another but is instead a teaching moment so that when we do go to the polls we can vote with a clear conscience. These conversations will take place at First Lutheran on the 15th at 9:00 a.m., at Prince of Peace on the 22nd at 9:00 a.m., and at St. John’s on the 29th at 9:00 a.m. I look forward to visiting with you about it. If you are unable to attend the conversation at your church, please make plans to attend at one of our other congregations.

There is a lot to be excited about as we get further into the Fall and Winter. It is my hope that your excitement matches that to what the Holy Spirit is working among us.

Have a great October!

Pr. James

SOS: Snippets on StewardshipStewardship IS about giving money to the church, but it is about so much more.“Stewardship is everything I do after I say, ‘I believe,’” is a definition attributed to Pastor Clarence Stoughton. Stewardship is in no way narrow—it is a way of life. Stewardship is the way we love with all that God has entrusted to our care. It is the way we show love with our whole selves. Stewardship is the way in which we use all of the resources that God has entrusted to our care to love God and our neighbor. It isn’t about putting in ‘just enough’—it is about putting in your whole self for the sake of God and your neighbor.

Stewardship is first and foremost about God and NOT about us. We are first receivers, not givers, and only out of that receiving do we give. There are multiple ways that God has, is, and will continue to come down to us in love. We give in response to God’s outpouring of generosity and love.

As stewards, God calls us to focus on what we have rather than what we do not have. We are called to look at what we have through the eyes of abundance rather than scarcity. While what we possess may seem meager, we know that God multiplies in abundance. If God can use a boy’s small lunch of bread and fish to feed 5000 people, surely, God can use our gifts and talents to touch more lives than we can imagine! As stewards, we seek to manage what God has entrusted to us to love those in need, not only in word, but also in action.

While God certainly calls us to large feats of faith and stewardship, the everyday acts of stewardship, while smaller, are just as important. As we look out, we cultivate a new sense of sharpened awareness to the needs of our neighbor, community, and world. We become more attentive and look for ways to use what we have in service. We learn to live in a way that is open to sharing what little we have with those in need both near and far.

Monthly Mission UpdatesThrough the third Sunday in September our Parish has collected over 220 pairs of new and gently used socks. The final tally will be listed in the November Careletter.

For the month of October: Packing Paper SundaysWe will be picking Paper Products to Pack into our collection baskets. Possible examples are: rolls of toilet paper and paper towels, tissues (both personal and value-size), napkins, plastic wrap and baggies, aluminum foil, copy and crafting paper, and post it notes. This is probably one of the few months that gently used is NOT readily accepted!!!Somebody asked why we are ‘asking for stuff’ EVERY month… Our ultimate goal is to fill multiple backpacks later this spring to distribute to the destitute pleading along our highways and byways. Items not going into those backpacks will be donated to Hastings Crossroads Rescue Mission, the Lincoln People’s City Mission, and Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach. The bath size soap in February will be donated to Lutheran World Relief. How truly blessed we are to be able to share with others.

St. John’s WELCA is offering free of charge small glass tray with cup snack sets. The Federal Glass sets are the Homestead pattern featuring an elegant wheat motif pressed into the underside. The large number of sets available would be perfect for an organization to use to serve a light lunch or desserts. If you know of anyone who would like the snack sets, please contact Louise Wulf at 402-295-2578.

In November we will be asking for individuals to volunteer to help receive gifts during the hours that our Relay Center is open. Volunteers from across the parish are greatly appreciated. Since this is a new adventure for us, I have no idea what to expect. However, working together will make this a reality that will impact so many children!

Prince of Peace has collected gifts for the past two years. We will again be doing this. I’m not sure if St. John’s and First have participated in this project, but I encourage you to consider this. Information regarding the Operation Christmas Child program and packing of boxes will be coming in October.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have. Please continue to pray for this project and all the children who will come to know Jesus as their savior as a result of these shoebox gifts.

Churchwide News: Board of directors of the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities has issued a statement

condemning hate threats9/21/2016 12:45 PM

CHICAGO (ELCA) – The board of directors of the Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities has issued a statement condemning hate threats made against Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kan., and its president, William Jones.

Earlier this month, racist messages written in chalk were discovered on the Bethany campus. Following the incident, Jones received threatening phone calls from someone claiming responsibility for the messages and drawings.

The Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities comprises the 26 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America-related institutions of higher education. The network’s board of directors is made up of the institutions’ 26 presidents and an executive director.

The statement said:

“The Network of ELCA Colleges and Universities has watched with grave concern recent incidents at Bethany College. As the association of the twenty-six institutions of higher education related to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), we are compelled to speak in support of Bethany College, our member institution in Lindsborg, Kansas.

“We have learned that threats from a hate-group appeared earlier this month in chalked messages on campus walkways and in messages conveyed by telephone. These racist messages focused on the family of Bethany College’s new president, William Jones, and the two bi-racial children of the president and his wife. An increased presence of persons of color in the student body was also the target of this hate speech.

“We are diverse institutions in the Lutheran tradition, but we stand as one against these threats. With President Jones, we deplore these despicable actions that are, as he has shared, ‘disgusting and completely contrary to our core values and intellectual identity.’

“The ELCA Network of Colleges and Universities condemns the racist attacks and threats of violence made against the president, his family, and members of the Bethany College community. Such behavior is antithetical to human, Christian, and American values. All people of good will should stand with us against the racism, bigotry and hatred that is at the root of these recent attacks.”

October Funnies

Can’t stop coffin - A man is walking home alone late on Halloween night. It’s dark, and the streetlights are out. Suddenly, he hears BUMP! BUMP! BUMP! behind him. He walks faster, but the sound keeps coming. BUMP! BUMP! BUMP! Worried he is being followed, he glances behind him and through the darkness, and he can just see an upright coffin; it’s just bumping down the street behind him. The man is scared. He’s sure it’s following him! In an effort to shake it off, he turns a corner. To his relief, the sound stops. He keeps walking but before a minute has passed, he hears the familiar sound behind him again: BUMP! BUMP! BUMP! He is terrified! He starts to run toward home, but the faster he runs, the faster the coffin bounces along behind him! Bumpity BUMP! Bumpity BUMP! Bumpity BUMP! He pushes open his front gate, and runs up the path, fumbling for his keys. The coffin reaches the gate and effortlessly pushes it open. It’s right behind him! Finally, his shaking hands manage to unlock his front door. He has no time to slam it behind him; the coffin is right on his heels! He rushes up the stairs, praying the coffin cannot climb after him. BUMP! BUMP! BUMP! The coffin pauses at the bottom of the stairs. The man breathes a sigh of relief but…clappity BUMP…clappity BUMP…clappity BUMP…the coffin is now climbing the stairs behind him. He runs to the bathroom; perhaps he can lock himself in there! His heart pounds and his lungs hurt with the exertion of running for his life! He has only just latched the bathroom door when CRASH!!! The coffin breaks through the bathroom door! What can he do? The coffin is nearly upon him! He reaches out for something heavy that he can throw at the coffin, and his hand comes to rest on a large bottle of cough syrup. Desperately, he throws the cough syrup as hard as he can at the coffin and . . . . . . . finally the coffin stops!
