He was born in the South Island. His father was a shearer and that’s why they were living there. They didn’t live there for long before they relocated to the North Island, to Pūtere. They didn’t stay there long either. They moved to Palmerston North. Zeb grew up there.

He started at Roslan School. A mainstream school. He doesn’t mention the name of his intermediate, but, he was in the bilingual class. He attended two schools, Queen Elizabeth and then Palmerston North Boys College.

3. How was the day structured at Zebs school?

It started at 9am but you had to arrive at 8.45. The teacher would take the roll and then the students went to period 1. There were two classes in the morning, following that was interval.

After interval there were two more classes. They would then have lunch and conclude with period.

4. How can you tell that Zeb’s school is strict?

If you kept getting in to trouble you would be expelled.

5. Explain the differences in the assembly process at Zeb’s schools.

At Palmerston Boys you had to stand when the principal enters. At Queen Elizabeths the students remained seated whilst the teachers entered. At Palmerston Boys you couldn’t talk and you couldn’t move. The school leaders would stand at the side and see if anyone was talking. If you talked you got in to trouble.

6. Why did Zeb change schools?

Because there were more options for sports. 7. What is Zeb’s philosophy on education?

Education has a beginning and no end. You continue to learn as an old person and beyond.

Zeb thinks you should take classes that have teachers that you like as you’re more likely to succeed.
