RE-STYLED CIVIC FOR 2009

Honda’s British-built Civic has been refreshed this autumn, in direct response to customer feedback.

The Civic has been a resounding success in the UK since it was introduced three years ago, with a stylish design that still looks as good as it did at launch. As a result only minor changes have been required to bring the car bang up-to-date.

The 5-door remains as practical and flexible as ever – a stalwart model for families and ‘young-at-heart’ customers who want reliability and flexibility in an ultra-stylish package.

The Type S will increasingly appeal to a younger customer base with sportier features that make it look even more like the Type R, but also sensible ownership costs that are lighter on the pocket.

Both models will appeal to the increasing number of downsizers thanks to a new 1.4litre petrol engine that has a lower starting price and is super-economical to run.

Civic 5-door

The stylish and practical Civic 5-door has been a firm family favourite since its launch in 2006. For 2009 it will get a new frugal engine and bespoke transmission, as well as subtle interior and exterior enhancements, ensuring this success continues.

Key features:

• New economical 1.4-litre i-VTEC engine

• Bespoke, conventional automatic transmission for 1.8-litre models

• Powerful yet economical 1.8-litre i-VTEC and acclaimed 2.2-litre i-CTDi

• Practical 5-door body shape with flexible interior and class-leading load space of

485-litres (seats up, to window)

• Stylish exterior design as fresh as it was at launch

• Built in Swindon, UK

New 1.4-litre engine

The newest addition to the Civic engine line-up is Honda’s 1.4-litre i-VTEC – an entry level, Euro 5 engine with improved CO2 emissions of 135g/km, fuel economy of 47.9mpg (combined) and increased power (100PS) and torque (127Nm) compared to the previous i-DSI unit.

The economical engine will appeal to younger customers or downsizers who want the Civic’s stylish looks, roomy proportions and practicality at an even more affordable price.

As well as new VTEC valve-train technology, other enhancements have made the engine quieter and cleaner. These include an improved combustion chamber shape, drive-bywire throttle, a composite intake manifold with resonator chamber that offers good low and mid-range torque and a narrow timing chain and tensioner that reduce weight.

Friction reducing technologies include roller-tipped rocker arms, an offset crankshaft/connecting rod design, plateau honing of the cylinders for a smoother surface and a special piston surface coating which is better at oil retention and optimised piston ring tension.

Elsewhere, high-strength con-rods, forged as one unit, and then ‘cracked’ in two, create a lighter and stronger rod with perfectly fitted bearing cap that significantly reduces the weight of moving parts for increased efficiency.

i-VTEC – How it works

Honda’s familiar VTEC variable valve timing system helps to achieve efficiency and power together. Depending on engine load and engine speed, an electronic controller chooses between two different cam profiles to determine how the intake valves will operate – maximising economy and performance.

At low revs, the timing of the two intake valves is staggered and the lift asymmetrically skewed in favour of the primary valve, which helps to create a swirl effect within the combustion chamber that increases the efficiency of the burn process. At higher rpm the secondary valve changes to a long-duration mode that increases the volume of air/fuel mixture moving into the combustion chamber. This additional mixture helps increase power at high engine speeds. The head utilises a narrow design between the intake and exhaust valves, contributing to the unit’s compact size. Honda’s acclaimed 2.2-litre i-CTDi engine continues to be available in the Civic 5-door.

Page 4: View.doc

The economical and torquey powertrain has low CO2 emissions of 134g/km on the SE grade, and 139g/km on ES grades upwards and fuel economy of 55.4mpg (combined).

In addition the 1.8-litre i-VTEC petrol engine remains achieving 42.2mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of 155g/km. However, the 1.8-litre model can now be paired with a specially-developed automatic transmission.

Transmission

For the first time on Civic, a conventional 5-speed automatic gearbox is available. This has been developed exclusively for the 5-door 1.8-litre Civic to suit the driving styles and preferences of our customers.

Civic 1.8-litre SE petrol models mated with the automatic transmission achieve 39.8mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of 165g/km. ES grades upwards achieve 38.7mpg (combined) and 169g/km.

The smooth 6-speed manual transmission retained since launch is fitted as standard on both petrol and diesel powertrains.

Revised i-SHIFT

Honda’s next-generation 6-speed i-SHIFT automated manual transmission is available with the new 1.4-litre engine offering improved fuel economy and CO2 emissions of 49.6mpg (combined) and 132g/km respectively.*

Improvements from the previous i-SHIFT unit include reduced gear change times, smoother shifts and more intelligent automatic mode shift logic.

How it works

The driver can choose between either Auto Mode for a more relaxed driving style, or Manual Mode for a more involving drive, using the sequential gearshift or steering wheel mounted paddles – the left paddle controlling down-shifts and the right paddle for up-shifts.

Page 5: View.doc

Automatic Mode is selected by moving the gearshift to the left of the gate, while sequential changes in Manual Mode are made by moving the lever either forwards (up changes) or backwards (down changes) in the main gate or by using the paddles.

The shift lever requires only a short movement to select the next gear for easy and comfortable use and reverse gear is in the conventional manual position for familiarity.

The conventional clutch is replaced by a Transmission Control Unit that controls the clutch via an actuator with hydraulic power generated by a DC motor, meaning gear changes are quick and smooth.

Drivers can override Automatic Mode momentarily by switching to paddle operation – to change down a couple of gears for added acceleration, for example – after which, the system will automatically return to Automatic Mode.

The selected gear in both automatic and manual shift modes is shown in a display located within the fuel gauge dial, with the letter ‘A’ next to the gear number when Automatic Mode is selected.

The i-SHIFT gearbox is designed to adapt to different driving conditions by using a series of shift maps. For example, when driving downhill, the system will shift down to provide engine braking. On the latest system a yaw rate sensor detects cornering and holds the present gear, rather than shifting to avoid upsetting the car’s balance or causing hesitation, allowing the Civic to accelerate smoothly out of the corner. In addition, after starting the engine with the lever in neutral, the system defaults to Automatic Mode or when the car stops in fourth gear, the intelligent system will automatically shift back to first in both modes.

The intelligent system also safeguards the engine. For instance, at low rpm the system will not shift up, even if instructed to do so, to prevent malfunction and engine knocking, and it will automatically shift up just before the red line in order to avoid damaging the engine by over-revving. In addition the system prevents accidental down shifting that might cause engine damage e.g. selecting second gear at 70mph.

*A classic auto transmission is available for 1.8-litre 5-door models therefore the revised i-SHIFT automated manual transmission cannot be paired with the Civic 5-door’s 1.8-litre petrol or 2.2-litre diesel powertrains.

Page 6: View.doc

All i-SHIFT models are now equipped with Hill Start Assist, which when pulling away from standstill on an incline, continues to apply the brakes for a moment as the driver moves their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator, preventing the car from rolling back.

All manual transmission models now feature a SIL (Shift Indicator Light) within the centre of the rev counter (as found on the latest Accord) that detects whether there is a surplus or shortage of torque and provides the driver with a visual prompt of the best point to change gear and maximise economy.

Interior

Uprated plastics and new trim materials have been used inside the revised Civic. A brushed metal effect trim and matt finish, as seen in the Type R, have been applied to the instrument console. These look sporty and are easier to clean and maintain than the Piano Black trim on earlier models. New seat fabrics have also been introduced.

Rear parking sensors are now fitted as standard on ES GT grades upwards, while iPod connectivity is available on ES grades and above. The USB port allows iPods to be operated through the main audio system and steering wheel controls. SE and ES grades have iPod playback capability through the auxiliary port.

Versatility

Practical values remain at the heart of the Civic. Load space is still one of the best in class, with 485-litres (VDA seats up) opening up to 1326-litres when the seats are flat. In addition, the main cargo floor can be dropped down to create a recess, ideal for taller items or shopping bags for instance.

As well as having ‘magic’ rear seats like the Jazz, the Civic rear seats also have storage space underneath which can be utilised even when the seats are in use – great for stowing flat buggies, more shopping, changing bags etc.

Exterior

Over 50 per cent of customers say they choose the Civic for its stylish exterior and appearance – a design that still looks as fresh as the day it was launched. As a result, only subtle changes have been made for 2009.

Page 7: View.doc

Uprated exterior plastics and a new rear combination light cluster have been used to make the car’s overall appearance more premium, while changes to the grille have been made to aid cooling and accommodate the new auto ’box for 1.8-litre models.

Three new paint colours are available – Crystal Black Pearl, Polished Metal Metallic and Deep Sapphire Blue Pearl in addition to Alabaster Silver Metallic, Deep Bronze Pearl, Galaxy Grey Metallic and Milano Red.

Automatic and i-SHIFT Civic 5-door models will go on sale in January 2009. Other models and full pricing will be available in 2009.

CIVIC TYPE S

The latest Civic Type S has been modelled on its big brother – the sporty Type R – for customers who want the looks at a more affordable price and lower running costs.

Key features

• Type R finishing touches that make it look even sportier

• New 1.4-litre petrol engine that’s even more affordable and economical

• Retained economical but powerful 1.8-litre i-VTEC and 2.2-litre i-CTDi engines

• Ultra-stylish exterior

• Sharper, sportier handling than the 5-door through revised suspension settings

• Built in Swindon, UK

While the Type R is described as raw – like a rare steak perhaps (bear with us!) we like to think of the Type S as a nicely grilled sirloin. It’s got all the looks now and is positively sizzling, but with more affordable running costs it also appeals to a wider range of customers. If you want a car that’s fun, looks great, but is easy to live with every day and easier on the pocket – the Type S is for you!

Sporting looks

Over half of Civic customers choose the car for its stylish looks, and the Type S excels in this department.

Body coloured bumpers and skirts derived from the Type R now feature on the new Type S as does the Type R’s distinctive black honeycomb grille.

At the rear there are clear combination lamps and the body coloured bumpers make the car look even lower and wider.

Inside there are more Type R similarities. A brushed metal effect trim and matt finish has been applied to the instrument console, which makes the cabin feel sportier. Meanwhile upgraded seat fabrics have been introduced for the supportive, sporty Alcantara seats.

Page 9: View.doc

iPod connectivity is now offered on GT grades as standard – the USB port allows the iPods to be operated through the main audio system and steering wheel controls, while all other grades have iPod playback capability through the auxiliary port.

Three new paint colours – Crystal Black Pearl, Polished Metal Metallic and Deep Sapphire Blue Pearl complement the existing palette of Alabaster Silver Metallic, Deep Bronze Pearl, Tangerine Orange Metallic and Milano Red.

Frugal and affordable 1.4-litre engine

Type S customers tend to be younger than those who own Type Rs and 5-door Civics. They want the Type S for its looks and sporty styling, but need to keep costs down. Similarly there are an increasing number of downsizers, and for this reason a new 1.4litre i-VTEC petrol engine has been introduced, offering value for money and high fuel economy (47.9mpg combined) as well as low emissions of 135g/km.

Compared to the previous i-DSI unit power is up from 83PS to 100PS at slightly higher rpm while torque is up from 119Nm to 127Nm at 4800rpm.

The Type S is also available with either the 1.8-litre i-VTEC or torquey 2.2-litre i-CTDi powertrain.

Transmission

The smooth 6-speed manual transmission, available since launch, is fitted as standard on all petrol and diesel Type S models.

A revised i-SHIFT automated manual transmission which benefits from quicker, smoother gear changes and improved shift logic can also be mated to both petrol engines.

More enthusiastic drivers opting for the i-SHIFT on the 1.8-litre Type S can make use of a unique ‘Sports’ button which when pressed, allows longer revving before shifting up to the next gear.

All Type S models fitted with i-SHIFT automated manual transmission are equipped with Hill Start Assist, while all manual models feature a SIL (Shift Indicator Light) which prompts the driver of the best point to change gear, maximising economy.

Page 10: View.doc

Sporty handling

The Type S has revised spring and damper settings and a 20mm wider rear track which deliver sharper chassis dynamics and crisp handling, while 17-inch light alloy wheels shod with 225/45 R17 tyres provide enhanced grip.

CHAMPIONSHIP WHITE CIVIC TYPE R

In response to huge customer demand, Honda has created a high spec’ Type R GT in Championship White - a version of the FN2 Civic Type R in Honda’s traditional racing colours.

Fans of the ‘Red H’ have been eager to get their hands on a Type R in White since the latest body shape was introduced in 2007 and now their calls have been answered. This car will be available to order from the end of the year with all models built at Honda’s manufacturing plant in Swindon.

As well as the distinctive Championship White paint finish that evokes memories of Honda’s first F1 car in 1963, this Type R gets 18” white alloy wheels, a contrasting smoke chrome finish on the badges, door handles, fuel filler cap and lower front grille and exclusive Type R plaque.

It also gets a limited slip differential, helping the car to lay down its spine-tingling 200PS. Around our test track in Tsukaba, Japan, the ‘white hot’ Type R shaves 1.44 seconds off the standard car’s time.

On sale in January 2009 this Championship White Civic Type R GT will be priced at £20,140 OTR and £21,540 including Sat Nav.

Page 12: View.doc

THE HISTORY OF THE TYPE R

February 1992: Honda engineers, with the invaluable advice of Ayrton Senna, set about developing the race performance of the NSX. The NSX-R is thus born. Major changes include a more aggressive suspension and an extensive weight reduction (removing audio, electric windows, and air conditioning) to 1230kg from the normal NSX weight of 1350kg. In addition, race spec titanium con rods are placed into the original VTEC engine, allowing it to withstand the stresses of racing. It is finished in Championship White paint and the Red H emblem of the RA 272, the first Honda Formula 1 car to win a Grand Prix. Production is limited to 1,995 units.

September 1995: Honda announces the launch of the DC2 Integra Type-R. The Integra Type-R is powered by the B18C 1.8litre DOHC VTEC engine, specifically developed for the Integra Type-R, with 200bhp at 8,000rpm.

Fumiyasu Suga, the assistant chief engineer for Type R, declares that in order to make a true race engine, some parts must be built and finished by hand; in particular, the assembly of the engine, balancing parts, porting and polishing.

Honda engineers buff the cylinders by hand to remove any slight imperfections, resulting in an increase in performance of 10bhp.

Standard equipment includes a helical LSD, sports suspension, a front lip spoiler, a rear spoiler, alloy wheels, a leather-wrapped Momo steering wheel, Recaro seats, and a titanium gearshift knob.

August 1997: The EK9 Civic Type-R is launched in Japan. It is powered by an exclusively-developed 1.6-litre DOHC VTEC B16B engine that makes 185bhp at 8,200rpm. The lightweight B16B engine features a new valve system allowing higher engine speeds, reduced engine friction, improved breathing, and increased compression ratio.

Main improvements to handling include increased body rigidity, reduced weight, sports suspension, torque-sensitive helical LSD, sports-tuned ABS, and Bridgestone Potenza RE010 tyres.

January 1998: The Accord Type-R goes on sale in the UK, with a tweaked H22A 2.2litre VTEC engine on board. In addition, the Accord Type-R boasts a limited-slip-diff, 17inch alloy wheels, Recaro seats and a stiffer chassis.

July 2001: An updated version of the Integra Type-R (DC5) is launched for sale in Japan and USA. The special colour of Championship White celebrates Honda’s first victory in F1. The DC5 Integra Type-R is powered by the K20A 2.0-litre DOHC i-VTEC engine with 220bhp and a new 6-speed manual gearbox. The suspension adopts clever front suspension and reactive-link double wishbone rear suspension. The Integra Type-R is also equipped with Recaro front seats, a leather wrapped Momo

Page 13: View.doc

steering wheel, aluminium pedals, aluminium shift knob, exclusive aero parts and Brembo front brakes.

October 2001: A Type-R version of the seventh generation Civic is announced. It is built at Honda in the UK Manufacturing in Swindon, Wiltshire. The CTR – as it becomes known by enthusiasts – is powered by a 2.0litre i-VTEC engine that produces 197bhp at 7,400rpm. The Civic Type-R goes on to sell over 35,000 units and pick up numerous awards. February 2006: The Civic Type R Concept, based on a three-door version of the 2006 Civic is unveiled at Geneva Motor Show.

September 2006: Honda unveils the production version of the 2007 Civic Type R at the Paris Motor Show. The latest Civic to wear the Red H badge is more refined, easier to use everyday and features a reworked version of the 2.0-litre i-VTEC engine. Power is marginally increased to 201PS, but suspension is tuned to give crisp handling and sharper steering response.

October 2008: Championship White Type R GT debuts at Paris Motor Show, answering the cries of ‘Red H’ fans across the UK.

HONDA’S FIRST DIESEL AUTOMATIC

Honda has unveiled its first ever automatic ‘box for a diesel powertrain and it will be available in the latest Accord from January 2009.

Honda’s come a long way since one of our chief engineers said he hated diesels. In six years we’ve produced two generations of clean diesel engines – the acclaimed i-CTDi engine and more recently, the i-DTEC – low in CO2, NOx and particulate emissions and now a high quality, responsive diesel automatic transmission.

The eagerly-awaited diesel auto will appeal to a broader range of customers, particularly in the corporate market, where user choosers munching motorway miles will often only consider an automatic transmission.

Company car tax legislation has driven much growth in diesel sales and resulted in traditional ‘petrol heads’ re-assessing their choice of powertrain. For many of these drivers, the final hurdle in their transition to driving a diesel is whether or not it is available as an automatic.

From the outset, Honda’s intention was to produce a high quality automatic ’box in-house, rather than compromise the performance of its i-DTEC engine by mating it with an externally supplied transmission.

Accord Large Project Leader, Hiroyuki Ikegami is proud of what has been achieved with the new gearbox, commenting: “Having equipped the Accord with a newly developed engine, it would have made no sense to compromise the exceptional flexibility of our 2.2 diesel. Therefore, despite it taking more time, we have undertaken an extensive development programme for our gearbox in order to bring an automatic diesel to market.”

The new 5-speed unit uses the same straight gate layout and paddle shift system as seen on the Accord petrol automatic earlier this year. CO2 emissions are 170g/km (saloon) and 173-174g/km (Tourer) depending on model grade, while fuel economy is 44.1mpg (combined) for the saloon and 42.8mpg (combined) for the Tourer. Both body shapes fall into VED band E and the 25 per cent BIK tax bracket.

The Accord i-DTEC automatic will go on sale early 2009 priced from £22,400 (Accord

Page 15: View.doc

2.2 i-DTEC ES saloon) and £23,700 (Accord 2.2 i-DTEC ES Tourer). All prices are correct at launch, but for up-to-date pricing, it’s best to check the media website, www.hondauk-media.co.uk

Accord

The new Accord, launched earlier this year provides a strong challenge to the traditional premium manufacturers in the D-sector with sporty styling, greater refinement and excellent driving dynamics. All engines in the line up are designed to meet Euro 5 legislation, and its sector-leading package of safety systems rivals most E-sector cars.

Page 16: View.doc

CIVIC HYBRID

Honda’s low emission Civic Hybrid also gets a facelift this autumn, with cosmetic changes that further improve the overall appearance of the car.

A sportier new front bumper creates a more aggressive appearance and now incorporates the fog lights. The headlights have also been tweaked with a smoke chrome surround, complemented by a redesigned grille that resembles the Civic and new Accord more closely.

The existing alloys have been replaced with newly-designed 5-spoke 15-inch alloy wheels, while the rear lamps have a new colour treatment.

Nine paint colours are now available, including four new metallic paint colours – Crystal Black, Polished Metal, Premium White and Urban Titanium.

Inside, the seats don a new, premium fabric design and the indicators are now ‘onetouch’ for easy lane changing. The boot can also be opened remotely using the key fob.

The Civic Hybrid retains its petrol-electric drive train, which achieves CO2 emissions of 109g/km and exceptional urban fuel efficiency.

Like its predecessor, the new Civic Hybrid will have an eight year warranty on the vehicle’s battery pack and Honda will recycle any old batteries through its dealer network.

The new Civic Hybrid is available to order now and priced from £17,490.

ALL-NEW JAZZ

The previous Jazz was such a successful car that creating its successor was always going to be a challenge. But by enhancing the car’s strongest qualities, the engineers at Honda have taken Jazz on to the next stage, producing a car with even greater flexibility, more interior space and a ‘bigger car’ feel.

Key features

• Even more spacious, more versatile interior

• Two new i-VTEC petrol engines with lower CO2 emissions

• Improvements to suspension to refine ride

• Improved i-SHIFT 6-speed automated manual transmission available

• Double-Trunk boot brings further flexibility to load space

• Magic Seats enhanced for ease of use

• Better driving position and visibility

• High quality interior materials and sharper cabin design

Value for money

Arriving at a time of high fuel prices and tightening of belts, the latest Jazz offers a range of lively, economical petrol engines which will appeal to the increasing number of cost-conscious motorists looking for a smaller car to meet their needs.

For those people, the Jazz could be an ideal choice, because it offers many features of a bigger car (load space, driving feel and high-spec equipment), but in a small car package. So, you get the practicality and comfort of a larger car, with the fuel economy, emissions and more affordable running costs of a small one.

Residual values

Jazz has achieved consistently strong residual values (RVs) since it entered CAP Monitor and Glass’s Forecast in 2002, and the new car looks set to do even better with an uplift over and above the current car and its competitors.

Versatility

One of the reasons so many people buy the Jazz is for the class-leading load space. Despite its size, total luggage space in the new Jazz can stretch to a huge 883 litres, which betters all competition in the supermini sector and rivals that of some in the class above! Don’t believe us? We’ve even heard of a Jazz customer transporting her new flat pack kitchen in the back of her car.

The cinema-style Magic Seats are back by popular demand, but are now even easier to use. There’s a new Double-Trunk boot feature (available on 1.4-litre models) which can be configured in four ways to suit different load requirements, and as you’d expect, the new Jazz comes packed with thoughtfully designed storage spaces to stow all the paraphernalia a modern family car requires.

Page 19: View.doc

Engines

The Jazz features two new petrol engines, designed to appeal to customers who might be downsizing, as well as those looking to achieve maximum fuel economy – for which the Jazz is renowned.

In place of the two-valve i-DSI technology used in the previous Jazz, the latest range is powered by newly-developed four-valve i-VTEC petrol engines – a 90PS 1.2-litre and 100PS 1.4-litre engine. Both deliver lively performance with increased power and torque.

1.2-litre

A capacity of 1198cc makes the new 1.2-litre engine slightly smaller than its predecessor yet power rises from 77 to 90PS at 6000rpm. Similarly, torque increases from 110Nm to 114Nm at 4900rpm. Take-off acceleration is improved as well as acceleration in higher gears, so it’s nippy enough for city driving. The Jazz 1.2 retains its super frugal nature with fuel economy of 53.3 mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of 125g/km.

1.4-litre

It’s a similar story with the new 1.4-litre engine. Compared to the previous i-DSI unit which produced 83 PS and 119Nm, power is up to 100PS at a slightly higher 6000rpm and torque is 127Nm at 4800rpm.

Fuel economy has been improved with the 1.4-litre ES managing 52.3 mpg (combined) with CO2 emissions of 128g/km, while the EX grade achieves 51.4mpg with 130g/km emissions. Fitted with the i-SHIFT automated manual transmission, emissions of the 1.4-litre models are reduced to 125g/km and 128g/km respectively, while the improved fuel economy compares with the 1.2-litre model.

Pricing

The new Jazz is priced very competitively, with the entry level 1.2-litre S available from £9,990 OTR. But it is the SE grade, including air conditioning and 15-inch alloy wheels and priced from £10,990 (OTR), that’s expected to be most popular of the 1.2-litre variants.

Of the 1.4-litre models, Honda will sell most of ES grade, accounting for 25 per cent of the total mix. Priced from £11,490 (OTR) it includes 15-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning, Double-Trunk boot, refrigerated glovebox and VSA. Meanwhile, the premium-spec 1.4 EX with additional 16-inch alloys,

Page 20: View.doc

auto lights and wipers, cruise control, climate control and panoramic sunroof is priced at £12,790 (OTR).

Honda’s i-SHIFT automatic manual transmission costs £800 and when paired with the 1.4litre ES the cost is £12,290 (OTR), while the 1.4-litre EX i-SHIFT is priced at £13,590 (OTR).

Manual versions of Jazz are on sale now with the i-SHIFT on sale in January 2009.

All prices are correct at time of print, but for up-to-date pricing, it’s best to check the media website, www.hondauk-media.co.uk

WARM TECHNOLOGY

Honda aims to create technology that makes a difference, whether that’s shaving bolt threads off beyond a nut to save weight, creating a new breed of aviation jet more efficient than anything else in the sky or dreaming of technology to make every car journey safer.

The Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS) and Super-Handling All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) are a handful of innovative technologies developed by Honda to make car journeys safer and are available to test on the latest Accord, CR-V or Legend.

Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS)

Available on Accord, CR-V and Legend

One of the most common causes of accidents is the delay between the driver acknowledging a potential collision and taking evasive action. As a result, Honda has concentrated on pre-crash developments like CMBS, which improve the car’s response to critical situations. CMBS is particularly effective at minimising rear-end impacts. A millimetre-wave radar sensor in the front grille recognises a collision is imminent.

CMBS reacts in three ways; the driver is given an audio warning and a visual brake warning. If no action is taken the alarm is given again and an E-pre-tensioner lightly tugs at the driver’s seatbelt as light braking is applied. If still no action is taken and the system decides that a collision is unavoidable, strong braking is applied along with strong seatbelt retraction.

CMBS will not bring the car to a complete stop. Instead, it’s an aid to help the driver to avoid a collision, or lessen the severity if an accident does occur. As with all Honda driving aids, the driver remains in control at all times.

Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS)

Available on Accord and Legend

Fatigue and distraction are serious issues for drivers, particularly those pounding the motorways for long periods of time, which is why Honda originally developed the Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS).

LKAS uses images from a camera mounted inside the upper front windscreen to recognise which lane the car is travelling in. If the car begins to cross the lane markings without driver input on the steering or indicators, it calculates the optimum steering torque to keep the car in the centre of the lane.

Page 26: View.doc

A continuous warning beep is emitted when the car is about to cross the marking, and if no response is taken the system self-steers using Electric Power Steering (EPS) to maintain the correct course.

Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD)

Available on Legend

With SH-AWD, the Legend corners like it’s on rails. A cliché maybe, but we’re confident it lives up to the claim.

SH-AWD is an active torque distribution system that gives the Legend the cornering prowess of a sports car, while maintaining enviable levels of ride comfort. As well as varying torque distribution between front and rear wheels for optimum grip, SH-AWD also shares the torque between the left and right rear wheels to accelerate the outer wheel and provide virtually neutral handling through bends.

While some AWD systems can distribute torque between front and rear using a centre differential, or between left and right rear wheels using a rear differential, the Legend’s SH-AWD simultaneously controls torque from front to back and regulates lateral torque to the rear wheels – the first of its kind when it was introduced in 2006.

During straight line cruising and mild cornering, the system delivers up to 70 per cent of the available torque to the front wheels, and 30 to the back. But during heavy throttle use or more energetic driving, up to 70 per cent of torque is directed to the rear wheels for increased acceleration and enhanced cornering ability.

At the heart of the system is a clever Rear Drive Unit, which uses twin, direct electromagnetic clutches to distribute torque across the rear wheels. Firstly, the Legend’s ECU calculates where the torque should go for optimum performance, based on input from engine speed, wheel speed, steering angle and lateral G sensors.

The feed of torque is then controlled by the Rear Drive Unit, which varies the magnetic forces to either clutch, pushing the available torque to one side or the other. Remember, up to 70 per cent of the available torque from the V6 engine can be fed to the outer rear wheel, significantly improving stability and reducing the effects of understeer. Equally, if the Legend is decelerating during cornering, which might normally upset the balance of the car, the torque distribution is adjusted accordingly to help keep the car stable.

Because the outer rear wheel follows a path that’s wider than the average path of the front wheels, the Rear Drive Unit also includes an acceleration device, that ‘overdrives’ the rear wheel by up to five per cent. This means the extra torque given to that wheel can be transmitted efficiently to the road.

The result of all this intelligent technology is dramatically-enhanced steering feel, amazing stability and exceptional cornering performance unlike anything else in the E-sector.

Honda’s innovative and warm technologies span driver aid systems and structural technologies that enhance safety to environmental technologies like regenerative braking, thin film solar cells and the Home Energy Station, through to technologies of convenience such as cameras that help you park more easily and refrigerated gloveboxes to keep drinks and snacks cool!

New Honda Fourtrax AT – Automatically better

Those looking for power, comfort, outstanding ease of use, value for money and rugged good looks from a utility ATV should look no further than the latest addition to the best-selling Honda Fourtrax range. The new automatic-transmission Fourtrax AT brings new levels of rider-centred technology for outstanding levels of performance, handling and durability.

The new Fourtrax AT has a powerful liquid-cooled 420cc OHV engine similar to its manual cousin, but with a new automatic transmission providing 5-speed auto-shift or push-button manual shift. Braking power is truly inspiring, with dual hydraulic front and single rear disc brakes fitted as standard, and pads that minimise wear from dust and sand. Engine braking also slows the bike down automatically while travelling downhill, allowing greater stability and control on slopes.

Automatic transmission equals superior ease of use; consequently the new Fourtrax AT is a particularly attractive option for either new or occasional users. It is also perfect to be shared between multiple users. The gear ratio of the new model has been specifically designed for the UK market, giving a smooth delivery of power from take-up; while the new automatic 5-speed transmission provides the option of auto-shift or push button Electric Shift Programme (ESP) gear change, switchable on the move. The additional benefit of being able to start the machine in gear further adds to its convenience and usability.

HM Plant Honda rider and British Superstock Champion Steve Brogan will be on the Silverstone Circuit on Thursday with his limited edition CBR1000RR Fireblade

Page 34: View.doc

Class-leading handling comes from new independent double wishbone rear suspension (IRS), contributing to increased ground clearance, terrain-hugging grip, great handling and a responsive yet comfortable ride that is perfect for users needing to spend hours at a time in the saddle. Combined with the smooth change of the automatic gearbox, it allows good traction on slopes and uneven cambers while the dual-clutch system results in less jolting when changing gear.

As with the manual option, the Fourtrax AT is powered by a 420cc, OHV longitudinally mounted engine with direct driveshaft for maximum drivetrain efficiency, liquid cooling for increased engine durability, Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) for increased power and lower emissions, convenient selectable 2WD/4WD (TraxLok ™), and Honda-patented self-cleaning front-wheel disc brakes.

In line with Honda’s recent retail price reductions on a selection of its most popular utility ATV’s, the new ATV is competitively priced at £5,370 (excluding VAT) and comes complete with Honda’s cast-iron two year warranty. It comes in a traditional red and black livery and is available from authorised dealers nationwide from November 2008.

Awesome TRX700XX Sports ATV

The TRX700XX is a high end sports ATV built with performance and fun in mind. The frame, chassis, shocks, centred chain drive, and 11-inch rear wheels combine for razor-sharp handling; while fuel injection maximises power and efficiency; and new independent rear suspension makes the TRX700XX agile in any situation – at turns, on straights and off-camber. It is powered by a new 686cc SOHC liquid-cooled fuel-

injected, four-valve four-stroke engine; and features double-wishbone suspension with dual-spring front shocks and independent rear suspension. The incredible TRX700XX is on sale now from specialist Honda ATV Dealers in a striking metallic black and red, priced at £5,990 (inc. VAT).

Geoff Matthews, General Manager of Honda (UK) Power Equipment: “Already regarded as the best sports ATV range in the market, the new TRX700XX will only enhance our fantastic line-up. Our current top-end model, the acclaimed TRX450R, has once again proved its calibre by winning this year’s British Championship in the hands of nine-times champion Paul Winrow – so with an additional 250cc to play with this model looks set for similar success. Providing customers take a responsible approach to usage, the TRX700XX will provide years of safe and enjoyable off-roading.”

Safety

Page 35: View.doc

As with all Honda ATV’s, safety is paramount. As such, the TRX700XX includes within its price EASI (European ATV Safety Institute) training – a half day course on basic safety operation. To make it easy for new owners to put the bike through its paces as soon as the wrapping is off, the TRX700XX is subject to a pre-delivery inspection and a full handover from the Dealer. The bike also comes complete with Honda’s cast-iron two year warranty (subject to terms and conditions).

Honda created the original All Terrain Vehicle back in the seventies, and today, Honda is the world’s leading ATV manufacturer. Offering the market’s most comprehensive range of All Terrain Vehicles including two-wheel and four-wheel drive options, the Honda ATV Range offers a variety of transmission types, plus a huge choice of engine sizes ranging from 85.8 cc to 686 cc.
