WELCOME to Wallace State

At Wallace State, students of all ages find the inspiration to dream, and the courage and support to make their dreams come true. From major league pitchers Derek Holland and Craig Kimbrel, to NASA Rocket Scientist Mary Hovater, to university business school dean Dr. Lance Nail, to former Miss Alabama Shannon Camper Gryska, to professional golfers Brett Wetterich and Fredrick Jacobson, to country music singer Jimi Westbrook of Little Big Town, to meteorologist Jason Simpson….doctors, authors, lawyers, welders, nurses, chefs, scientists, counselors, entrepreneurs…for every profession imaginable, from the ordinary to the extraordinary, Wallace State has given someone a start to a dream.

We are delighted that you are considering Wallace State as the place to start your educational journey, and we look forward to helping you achieve the success you deserve and desire.

As a proud graduate of a community college myself, I will forever be a passionate advocate for the accessible, affordable, and excellent education our community colleges provide. And I am especially proud of the extraordinary accomplishments of students and faculty at Wallace State that have made our college a national pacesetter.

Wallace State is a nationally recognized, entrepreneurial learning college, known for the innovative, collaborative, world class edu-cational services we offer. Our students enjoy the highest results in learning, achievement upon graduation or transfer, licensure rates, job placement and future success.

Perhaps equally important, students often tell me that they appreci-ate the unique warmth of our campus and the personal encourage-ment they receive from our faculty and staff. A student-first philoso-phy always guides our planning and initiatives. We have a common goal, shared by faculty, staff and students, and supported by our community, to be outstanding in everything we do. Together we can accomplish incredible things.

I extend to you a personal invitation to visit our campus and ex-perience the fantastic environment, and extraordinary educational opportunities you will find here!

In a history that spans nearly 50 years, the college has grown to encompass a 300-acre campus, with more than 40 buildings. The common

denominator has always been the college’s commitment to its students and the genuine care and support provided by its faculty and staff.

While some have compared the WSCC campus to larger universities, students won’t feel like they’ll get lost in the crowd here.

The newest facility on campus is the Nursing and Center for Science building, a 115,000 square-foot facility that includes the latest

teaching tools for simulation of real-life emergencies and procedures that occur in the medical field. The building also includes

classrooms, lecture halls, computer labs, business center, café and common areas for all Wallace State students.

The 12-story James C. Bailey Center dominates the campus. It is the hub for all student services, including Lion Central, the one-stop

enrollment center where students can meet with advisors, speak with admission and financial aid representatives, apply for parking permits

and receive their student IDs. The Bailey Center is also used for administrative offices and classrooms.

Other buildings on campus include three residence halls, the Wallace State Library, Student Center, Science Complex and the seven-

story Bevill Building, the Health Science Building and the Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts, which houses the college’s

multi-million dollar art collection. The 5,000-seat Tom Drake Coliseum is home to the nationally-recognized women’s volleyball and men’s

and women’s basketball teams, and is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the southeast. Wallace State also recently constructed and

unveiled a new disc golf course, the only disc course on an Alabama Community College campus.

Wallace State also operates off-campus centers at J.B. Pennington High School in Blountsville, Brewer High School in Somerville, Addison

High School, Hayden High School, and as of January 2016 a new campus center in Oneonta.

The main campus is located on U.S. Highway 31 in Hanceville, AL, approximately 10 miles from Exit 291 on Interstate 65. WSCC is located

about an hour away from both Birmingham to the south and Huntsville to the north.

Visit www.wallacestate.edu for directions or a virtual tour of the campus.

Wallace State is the “crown jewel” of the state’s community college system. With abundant green spaces, running, biking and walking paths, two lakes, and plenty of room for outdoor recreational areas, the nationally-recognized college maintains a welcoming atmosphere where engagement in learning takes place at all levels in state-of-the-art environments designed for student success.

The College is home to a multi-million dollar art collection donated by Evelyn Burrow. The Evelyn Burrow Museum is located on campus in the Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Center for the Fine and Performing Arts and also hosts regular visiting exhibitions, such as this one of large-scale fine art photography.

STUDENT life

Along with providing a top-rated education in a safe

and friendly atmosphere, Wallace State strives to offer

its students numerous social, civic, athletic, cultural, and

entertainment opportunities for a well-rounded college

experience.

Our faculty and staff go out of their way to provide support

and encouragement for students and to enhance their

educational experience in ways that provide inspiration and

personal growth. That includes offering engaging activities

for socializing with friends, as well as challenges and

opportunities for personal accomplishments.

The college takes extra steps to build educational

opportunities into the curriculum through the Learning

Communities program. Courses designated as a Learning

Community (usually a 9:30 a.m. class) allow students to

attend campus or community events and process their

experience as part of their class.

Area high school students can experience campus life as

they participate in the Wallace State Dual Enrollment, Fast

Track for Industry and Fast Track to College programs.

With more than 30 student clubs and organizations,

students have ample opportunities to find their place

among others with similar interests and contribute to their

college and local communities. Several Wallace State

student organizations support community activities such as

the American Red Cross, Christmas Love, March of Dimes

Walk America, American Heart Association Heart Walk,

American Cancer Society Relay For Life, Humane Society

and Caring For Kids.

Other activities offered at Wallace State include intramural

sports, student government, drama club, student

newspaper and more. Homecoming, Spring Fling, concerts,

film screenings and other special events provide even more

occasions for social interaction.

Wallace State’s Honor Code sets the college apart from

other community colleges and puts us in the same class

as the nation’s most revered elite institutions. By asking

students to voluntarily commit to upholding standards of

mutual trust, compassion, and respect for oneself, one

another, and the community, the Honor Code establishes

an open environment for learning and growing through

personal and community responsibility.
