No matter who you are, Communion SundayNo matter where you areOn life’s journey,You are welcome here.

Worship begins with chimes. The prelude is a time of reflection and preparation for the worship of God.

Please silence cell phones. Bibles for use during worship are available at each entrance to the

Sanctuary.

THOUGHT FOR PREPARATIONThe mystery of the church is that it is, by God’s good grace, more than it seems to be. The Holy Spirit is the “more” of the Church. And the Holy Spirit is a wild, uncontrollable character.”

* HYMN Faithful God, You Sent Your Spirit Tune: Nettleton

Faithful God, you sent your Spirit long ago at Pentecost. You gave life and said to share it, all as one, beneath your cross. May we see your wondrous blessing when your people everywhere work together, all confessing faith that binds us, faith to share.

God of hope, you daily nurture those who seek to follow you. You’re not bound by any culture; you love rich and poor ones too. In an ever changing nation, may your churches welcome in every child of your creation, giving hope to all again.

God of love, may we in worship welcome our diversity. May we reach in trust and friendship to the poor and refugee. May we see Christ in the stranger, breaking bonds of race and fear. By your spirit, may we offer glimpses of your kingdom here.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION Sarah GarciaThe Spirit comes like a rush of violent wind that we still with our complacency. The Spirit comes like tongues of flamethat we smother with rational religion. The Spirit is wild, wild, wild. That’s why we want to tame Her. Christ have mercy. Amen.

Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

THE BIBLICAL WORD FOR THIS DAY Todd CoeJohn 7:37-39One: On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’” Now he said this about the Spirit, which believers in him were to receive; for as yet there was no Spirit, because Jesus was not yet glorified. Acts 2: 1-18, 21All: When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.”

One: But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed

them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:

‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh,

and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.

Even upon my slaves, both men and women,in those days I will pour out my Spirit;

and they shall prophesy. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

* A STATEMENT OF FAITHWe believe in God who has created and is creating,

who has come to us in Jesus Christ to reconcile and make us new,

who works in us and others by the Holy Spirit. We trust God. God calls us to be the Church,

to celebrate God’s presence,to love and serve others,to care for creation,to seek justice and to resist evil,to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our

hope.In life and death, in life beyond death, God is with us.We are not alone. Thanks be to God!

* HYMN God, We Thank You for Our People Black Hymnal, No. 376

God, we thank you for our people, roots dug deep within the soil, Hardy spirits, rich in loving, strong for struggle, bold for toil. Faithful Rock of generations, you whom parents’ parents praised: Here in hope as we remember may our song to you be raised.

Thank you, God, for gentle pleasure: lessons learned and secrets told,

hopes and mem’ries saved as treasure, passed to young ones by the old,

pranks and glories, songs and stories, food by loving hands prepared.

God, we bless you for your presence in our tears and laughter shared.

Still we must confess before you, sometimes, Savior, we have failed; though we worship and adore you, sometimes love has not prevailed. Tempers racing, devil chasing, hearts estranged by ice or flame You transform by ways forgiving, Grace amazing! Grace, your name!

THE FLOWERS ON THE ALTAR were donated by Derek McMahan in celebration of the marriage of Derek and Chelsey McMahan that took place on June 3 in Pittsburgh, PA.

TODAY’S OFFERTORY is a world premier. The anthem was sponsored by the Chancel Choir and the congregation to honor and celebrate the ministry of Pastor Avena Ward at her retirement. She chose the text of Psalm 139: 1-4, 14, 23 & 24 and the wonderful composer, Dr. Keith Hampton, has composed this lively and joyful setting. Dr. Hampton worked with our Chancel Choir on Wednesday evening and is with us this morning. We are grateful to sing a new song to raise up our singer and pastor.

ABOUT ST. PAULSMaking a joyful sound in the city

Saint Pauls UCC has a vibrant history in the city of Chicago. Founded in October 1843, we are one

of the city's oldest churches. In 1989 we became one of America's first congregations to declare ourselves "Open to and Affirming of” LGBT women and men.

From founding Chicago's largest provider of social services to at-risk children to starting a home for

the elderly, from housing protestors at the 1968 Democratic Convention to hosting Lincoln Park's first MLK day march against violence on Chicago's streets we are proud to make a joyful sound in

the city.

Most importantly, over the past 173 years we are glad to have introduced thousands of children and adults to the amazing, inclusive, life changing, uplifting love of God. We do so in worship that is

traditional, but far from conventional.
