The Seven Habits of Highly Effective TeensReading Guide

Guiding Verse: II Peter 1:9 "His divine power has granted us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to His own glory and excellence,"

Chapter 1: Get in the Habit

Page # Reading Tip/Question/Activity

3-4 Notice the difference in audience between Sean Covey's book (this one and the one by his father, Stephen Covey). How does Covey

establish that he is a credible author on this topic? How does he try to understand his audience?

5 Covey says that the experiences he shares are "real life." I want you to think about some real life experience that you have had or are

going through. You do not need to write it down; just think about. Look back at the examples; choose 1 example and find a Bible verse that could be beneficial if your friend asked you for help in one of these "real life" situations.

6 This is an example of a mind map. We will be drawing mind maps this year. Take some time to study why this is a good mind map.

BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS IN CLASS.

Chapter 2: Paradigms and Principles

13 Define paradigm _____________________________________________

13 Covey uses a specific comparison(simile) to convey the idea of a paradigm. What does he compare a paradigm to? In your own

words explain what Sean is trying to communicate(separate paper).

15 Pay special attention to the example and discussion on this page. How does this example apply to a child of God?

Page 2: croswellclassroom.weebly.comcroswellclassroom.weebly.com/.../31199689/...2014.docx  · Web view3-4Notice the difference in audience between Sean Covey's book ... Stephen Covey)

16 "At times, you may not have anyone to lean on . . ." Respond to that thought.

18 ". . . you'll find that most of your problems . . . are the result of a messed-up paradigm or two." What does Sean mean by this statement? Is

this statement Biblical?

19-23 Sean Covey discusses several objects on which we could center our lives. Explain some of the problems that he discusses that occur when we

chose one of these centers.

24 Please read this page carefully and critically. Covey makes some statements that should raise a red flag in your mind as to whether

or not those statements are Biblical. What does Covey claim will recognize true principles? Look up Jeremiah 17:9 and write it down. Be prepared to discuss this verse and Sean's statement. Define relativism.(You may to need to use a dictionary).

27 Covey introduces his way of changing paradigms and making positive changes in your life. What does he call the way to reach new

goals?

Write down 1 statement/quote/fact/idea that you liked/didn't like, agreed with/didn't agree with, would like to try/think is dumb, etc. Be prepared to explain and discuss.

Part II

Chapter 3: The Personal Bank Account

Page # Reading Tip/Question/Activity

31-33 In your own words, explain what Sean Covey means by a "private victory."

34 The list of symptoms of a poor PBA are not just character flaws. What are all of those things on the list?

38 There is a statement on this page that directly contradicts Scripture and how Jesus lived. What do you think that statement is?

39-41 Is this "deposit" in your PBA a Scriptural principle? Why or why not?

45-46 Is there a promise that you made to yourself and kept?

Give examples of ways here at school that you could perform random acts of service.

Chapter 4: Be Proactive

Page # Reading Tip/Question/Activity

48 What was the biggest lesson Covey learned from his father?

49-50 At first reading, what type of person do you think you are?

51 Take time to think about the language you use. Is your language proactive?

54 Be discerning while reading this page. One statement that Covey makes could be considered non-Scriptural.

55 What is the one thing we can control?

56 This aspect of being proactive should be an encouragement to Christians. Can you identify a verse that teaches us this principle that seemingly bad

things can be good things?

59 Think about something you might like to see changed and HOW you can work to make that change.

65 Answer the question Covey asks at the beginning of the paragraph after the section entitled "Just Push Pause."

66 What are the 4 tools that Covey says we can use? Are all of these ideas biblical?

Page 5: croswellclassroom.weebly.comcroswellclassroom.weebly.com/.../31199689/...2014.docx  · Web view3-4Notice the difference in audience between Sean Covey's book ... Stephen Covey)

67-70 Explain in your own words Covey's explanation of the difference between a human's ability to make decisions and an animal's ability to make

decisions. Chapter 5: Begin with the End in Mind

Page # Reading Tip/Question/Activity

74 Explain Habit #2:

76-77 Take time to think about your friends. Do all of your friends help you reach the goals that you have?

78 I want to remind you that despite the direction that our society is moving, God has NOT changed. Marriage is a picture of Christ's

relationship to the church. Living together or being sexually active before marriage is sin. The choice you must make is whether or not to obey God's Word.

81 Have you ever thought about a personal mission statement? Take some time and try to write a mission statement.

86-89 Use this space and the back of this page to complete The Great Discovery.

94-98 Write down the five keys to goal setting

Chapter 6: Put First Things First

Page # Reading tip/Question/Activity

107 Study the 4 time quadrants & decide which type of person you are?

113-116 Explain the idea of "Big Rocks"

116 Besides time management, what are a few of the fears/influences to overcome when incorporating Habit 3.

Write down 1 statement/quote/fact/idea that you liked/didn't like, agreed with/didn't agree with, would like to try/think is dumb, etc. Be prepared to explain and discuss.

Chapter 7: The Relationship Bank Account

Page # Reading tip/Question/Activity

131 According to this chapter, what is the most important thing in life? Is this idea biblical? What are the two greatest commandments that

Jesus gave to the disciples? (include the scripture reference).

Page 7: croswellclassroom.weebly.comcroswellclassroom.weebly.com/.../31199689/...2014.docx  · Web view3-4Notice the difference in audience between Sean Covey's book ... Stephen Covey)

134 List the 6 acts that are sure to make a deposit in someone's life?

140 Explain this quote: "[S]trong minds talk about ideas; weak minds talk about people."

141-142 Think about the many teachings in the Bible about forgiveness. Sum up the way that God expects us to respond when we have wronged

someone else or when we have been wronged by someone else. Make sure you can support you ideas with God's Word because man's ideas, devoid of God's truth, are not sufficient as a guide for our live

143 I want to challenge you to take The Personal Challenge. If you would like to, you may share what you have done or decided to do to repair

some relationship if you can do so without embarrassing anyone.

Chapter 8: Habit 4: Think Win-Win

Page # Reading tip/Question/Activity

** We must never forget to think biblically. Covey presents many ideas that are biblical truths, but those truths aren't necessarily presented from a biblical mindset. How can we think biblically?(This question isn't as hard as it may seem.)

147-148 What sin did Satan commit?

What root sin causes someone to think Win-Lose?

149 What root sin causes someone to think Lose-Win?

151 What root sin causes someone to think Lose-Lose?

Page 8: croswellclassroom.weebly.comcroswellclassroom.weebly.com/.../31199689/...2014.docx  · Web view3-4Notice the difference in audience between Sean Covey's book ... Stephen Covey)

151-154 Explain the metaphor Covey uses to explain Win-Win. Find a Proverb that teaches the same principle as Win-Win.(write down the reference)

Chapter 9: Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood

Page # Reading tip/Question/Activity

168-170 Explain the 7 different types of poor listening styles.

171-176 Explain how to genuinely listen.

Write down 1 statement/quote/fact/idea that you liked/didn't like, agreed with/didn't agree with, would like to try/think is dumb, etc. Be prepared to explain and discuss.

Chapter 10: Habit 6: Synergize

Page # Reading tip/Question/Activity

183 Define synergy

Page 9: croswellclassroom.weebly.comcroswellclassroom.weebly.com/.../31199689/...2014.docx  · Web view3-4Notice the difference in audience between Sean Covey's book ... Stephen Covey)

183-185 Be careful while reading these pages. God clearly says that some things are right and some things are wrong. There is only one God, and

we should not "accept" other gods in order to embrace diversity. How are we commanded in the Bible to interact with others who are different from us. You must base your answer on Scripture.

186 & 194 What do YOU see in the picture?

187 On this page, complete the chart, figure out which type of fruit you are, and list several things that are your strengths and several things

that you could work on. BE SPECIFIC!

195-200 Explain the steps in synergy.

Chapter 11: Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw

Page # Reading tip/Question/Activity

206 What do you think President John F. Kennedy was trying to communicate in the quote at the top of this page?

208-240 In this chapter, Covey asks us to take care of four areas. List the four areas and BRIEFLY explain what he wants us to do.

Page 10: croswellclassroom.weebly.comcroswellclassroom.weebly.com/.../31199689/...2014.docx  · Web view3-4Notice the difference in audience between Sean Covey's book ... Stephen Covey)

229-232 *This is a very important section in the book. God has clearly outlined His plan for each of us in regards to sexual relationships. We must

guard our hearts and not fall for this World's beliefs. God's Word is the only source of protection from sin. Please find 2-3 verses in which God clearly communicates His desires for us.

234-240 Our souls are eternal beings that will live forever with God. We cannot renew our own souls; we can only be made alive by the free gift of

salvation. Covey is really taking about our spirit. What are some things you do to renew yourself when you are exhausted or stressed?

Chapter 12: Keep Hope Alive!

Page # Reading tip/Question/Activity

244 What comparison does Covey use to convince us that we can make changes in our lives?
