Thank You, FCMA!

Over four years ago, I met with FCMA's Executive Committee and Board to ask your support of my running for City Council.On May 13, I completed a successful bid for re-election to the At Large Group 3 position. That same week, my council colleagues elected me as their president for 2003-2004.

Political life has been quite an experience. Without question, it is one of the most rewarding tasks I have ever done. Whileelected officials receive daily satisfaction from our involvement in public life, it comes with a price. There is the constantexposure in the media, the stress on family life and the sacrifice made by those with whom you work.

I want to thank all of you members of First Coast Manufacturers Association for your support, your advice and understanding,and your patience in helping me become a better public servant. You have helped supplement the time and efforts needed when I have been focused on city affairs. I appreciate the opportunity to have served as your president for over eleven years.These last four years have made me realize how very exceptional our membership is.

The FCMA staff has three of the finest individuals with whom I have ever been associated. Debbie Warren, my right hand forover ten years has an underlying strength, keen mind and sense of commitment extraordinary in any individual. Maria Corby's dedication, personal skills and willingness to serve each of you is exceptional. Family Night

Over 400 FCMA member employees participated at the Family Night with the Jacksonville Suns on Friday, May 2. Additional outings are scheduled.

2003 Wage and Benefit SurveyThe deadline for this year's survey has been extended to June 10. If you complete and return the questionnaire, you will receive a complimentary copy when we distribute the results in July. This year's wage survey has increased to $100 for members only. We hope you will take the opportunity to participate in this survey, as it is the only one specific to manufacturing in our area.

Lean CouncilThe group will hold a half-day hands-on session Saturday, June 14, at Medtronic Xomed. Under Jerry Bussell's leadership, the council is moving forward in spreading the principles of lean to benefit FCMA members.

Community Relations Committee

Congratulations to Barbara Fochtman of FMC Corp. on the birth of her daughter--unfortunately for us, she has decided to stay at home with her baby, and retire as chair of the Community Relations Committee.

Fortunately for us, Mark Faircloth of Tetra Tech NUS has stepped in to take her place as chair.

Legislative UpdateRepresentative Don Davis visited with the Government Relations Committee this month at JEA.

Golf Leadership is a Hole-In-OneOnce again, Chris McNees of Aerostar Environmental Services and his committee members put on a great time had by all.Chris McNees chaired the event three years in a row but is happy to turn over the chairmans seat to Patricia Murphy of Kelly Services next year.

Enkei FloridaEnkei hosted FCMA for a very special, patriotic General Meeting on April 28. FCMA members were treated to a presentation of the colors by the Ribault High School ROTC and the singing of the national anthem. In addition, members took self-guided tours of Enkei's facilities. Thank you to JEA for serving as co-sponsor of the meeting, providing refreshments for the crowd of more than 120.

May UpdateA. Community Relations - Mark Faircloth, (Tetra Tech NUS), Interim Chair; Kendra Tanner, (Allstates WorldCargo), Assistant Chair 1. General Meetings: 4:00-6:00 PM unless otherwise noted. a. May 19: Annual Golf Outing. b. June 30: Hartley Press 2. New CAP: The committee will be working to create a new CAP in the Eastport Road/Heckscher Drive area. EHS (CAPSubcommittee) will assist. 3. Family Nights: Family night with the Jacksonville Suns on May 2 was a complete success, selling over 400 tickets (seepictures in Short Takes). Plans are underway for another Family Night with the Suns, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Barracudas(ice hockey). 4. PR Subcommittee: Pete Helow, Empire Communications Group a. Website: Phase II planning is underway for completion by June 30. b. Newsletter: New format quarterly newsletter was released in April. The new electronic VOICE has received positivefeedback. c. Workshops: The media training workshop scheduled for May 30 at Channel 4 was a sell-out.

B. HR/Education - Paulette Hinken, Chairperson (ENTEGEE/MPS Group); Bernita Nolan, Assistant Chair (Crane Resistoflex) 1. Workshops: a. May 7, Coaching Executives: 7:30-9:30 AM at the University Center. Cork Motsett from Business DevelopmentSpecialists presented an excellent, informative workshop. b. June 4, No Winking, No Blinking (Enron): 7:30-9:30 AM at the University Center. 2. Wage and Benefit Survey: Distribution of completed surveys is on track for July. Participating companies receive acomplimentary copy, however the price for non-participating members will increase to $100 per copy. 3. "Thank You, Teachers": September 4, 2003, at the River Club. Nomination forms have been printed and will be mailed toFirst Coast area teachers before the end of the month.

C. Environmental/Safety - Roger Chubin, Chairman (International Flavors & Fragrances, Inc.); Don Anderson, Assistant Chair (McGuireWoods) 1. TMDL Update: Problems continue with the modeling process with a deadline looming. It appears a compromise may beoffered with an extension. The citizen/stakeholder group continues to meet. FCMA has agreed to continue with the next phase with ATM. 2. Water Use: Figures have been crunched and the survey is online to be distributed this summer. 3. CAP: ChemCamp will be repeated again this year. It will be held first week of June with sponsoring companies hostingeach day of the week. The group continues target new community members to participate. 4. Professional Progress: This month's class was on negotiating skills and conflict resolution. The class will commit to acommunity project this month. 5. Workshops: a. Safety Program Management: This workshop originally scheduled for June 19 will be postponed until the fall. b. October 16: Water Quality/Supply.

D. Government Relations - Doug Duncan, Chairman (Smurfit-Stone Container Corp.); Mary O'Brien, Asst. Chair (Advanced Disposal Services) 1. Legislative: a. Agenda: The legislature did not pass a budget so will meet in special session (possibly two). Workers comp and medicalmalpractice may also be addressed in special session.

b. Session Update: Rep. Don Davis was the committee's guest this month. He gave his impression of the session as wellas some predictions. c. FMA: The group will have its Tallahassee trip critique on June 13. The group is still considering hiring a lobbyist to coverstatewide manufacturing issues. d. FMA: The Executive Committee of FMA met in Tallahassee last month. The group is looking at hiring a lobbyist to coverstatewide manufacturing issues. Several of the associations have agreed to contribute, but FCMA may be shouldered with much of the responsibility. 2. Elections: FCMA endorsed candidates fared well overall. (see list of newly elected officials in Short Takes). 3. Council President Reception: The Board approved the committee's recommendation to solicit members for contributionsfor the incoming City Council President's reception. Contributions will be bundled and contributors will receive a specialinvitation. 4. Guests: The committee will continue with guests joining at the meetings.

E. Membership Development - Cindy Hildebrand, Chairman (CF Machine & Tool, Inc.); Jim Hoener, Asst. Chair (Ameritape, Inc.); Dawn Blackledge, Asst. Chair (Aerostar Environmental Services) 1. Membership: The new drive has begun and we are off to a strong start. Board members have been charged with bringingin three new members each. The theme for this year's drive is "Racing to the Finish Line." 2. Recruiting Luncheons at Member Sites: A successful event was held by Enkei at Holiday Inn Airport. Others to bescheduled for IFF and Rich SeaPak. Invitees are the host's non-member vendors. 3. Liaison Visits: The Committee will conduct visits throughout the year, focusing on retention. 4. 2003 Directory: First update has been distributed. New directories to be distributed at the June general meeting. 5. IT Sub-Committee - Paul Kamke: The committee will continue to invite guest speakers to meetings in efforts to improveparticipation of manufacturing members.

F. Board of Directors/Executive Committee:

1. Lean Council: The group has planned a working Saturday session for June 14 at Medtronic Xomed. Jerry Bussell isworking on getting lean guru to visit an upcoming Board meeting. 2. The Manufacturing Taskforce: The group continues to notify members of workshops. Sharing training opportunities cutsdown on the duplication of seminars being offered among the groups.

2003 Contributors

Each year FCMA conducts a Platinum Plus Campaign to fund selected FCMA activities. The Board of Directors encourages eachmember to contribute to the 2003 campaign. The Board recently approved increasing our goal to $45,000 to fund the following special events:

* JU Speakers Series * FCMA Website * Manufacturers Economic Study * "Thank You, Teachers" * Public Relations and Publicity

Contributions may range from $100 to $5000 per company. The following members are making the 2003 drive a success.
