Storm: The power to control the weather
Storm is known for her ability to manipulate the weather and invoke lightning, high
winds or even blizzards with her powers. Not sure you want to start a winter weather
advisory in your smart home, but the Nest gives you the next best thing – total
control over temperature. You can manage the atmosphere in your home from
pretty much anywhere. Turn on the heat, adjust the A/C, or even set your Nest to
cool down your home in just enough time for you to get home. And just as Storm
works with her fellow X-Men, the Nest unit communicates with a number of other
smart home devices taking signals from their activity in order to be more efficient
in accomplishing the worthy task of keeping your home in its most comfortable

Cerebro: The ability to speak with fellow mutants
So Cerebro isn’t officially a character, but it certainly plays a pivotal role in X-Men:
Apocalypse. It helps Professor X find and communicate with other mutants across
the globe right from the comfort of his own subterranean basement. Telepathy
may be beyond the grasps of human understanding (for now), but in your smart
home you do have the ability to speak to and control many of your smart devices
through the Amazon Echo. This canister sized device, like Cerebro, is not a person
but feels like an added member of the family after a few days of use. You just
simply say “Hey Alexa” and then ask her a question or to perform a task and Alexa
does it. The Amazon Echo can connect to your Nest unit, home theater system,
Amazon account and more to allow you one central point of control for your smart
home devices. More and more smart home players are offering connectivity of their
devices to the Echo making it the unofficial operating system of the smart home.
Nightcrawler: Teleport to anywhere you can see
Oh how I wish I could teleport like Nightcrawler. Not that I want the blue face to go
along with it, but the thought of instantly going from one place to another is pretty
enticing. On the smart home side of things, the advent of home security systems
allows you to basically teleport to your home whenever you want using smart
camera systems. One of the more interesting ones on the market is the Netgear
Arlo Smart Home Security System. These pint-sized cameras are battery operated
and can be placed pretty much anywhere in and around your home. Unlike a lot
of smart home camera units, the Netgear Arlo can even be positioned outside
and around your property giving you the ability to peer into any room or corner of
your home. Check on the dog while you’re at work. Make sure the kids got home
alright after soccer practice. Even check on alert signals to your phone and see
who’s at your front door. There are a number of smart home camera systems on
the market today, but the Netgear Arlo appears to be one of the most interesting
options for those who want a full range of views into their home.
Mystique: The power to blend into anything
Shape shifting is the term most used for Mystique’s mutant powers as she can
turn herself into anyone that she sees. But what that power really boils down to
is her ability to blend in. The Stealth Acoustic Invisible Speakers also have that
same power. This high-end speaker system actually blends into your walls. How
is that possible? It’s basically a speakers system that lives inside the walls of your
home. You would think that would diminish the audio quality, but thanks to their
patented technology system it actually provides better sound than what you would
experience on any of the latest HD sets. Plus you have the ability to position the
speakers anywhere there’s a wall which leaves the possibilities endless for creating
the ultimate home audio system.
Cyclops: Shoot optic force blasts from his eyes
Possibly the coolest looking mutant ability, but not the most practical. The optic
blasts emitting from Cyclops eyes might seem like a stretch to compare to smart
home tech, but your eyes might actually glow when you experience the light
emitting diode display from the latest LG OLED 4K TV. This LG set, which debuted
at CES this year, projects its picture onto glass making it the thinnest OLED on the
market. Because of the technology used to turn on and off individual light displays
it also boasts the deepest blacks and most stunning picture you’ll come across.
When I got to experience first hand I’ll tell you my eyes were beaming…ok that
was forced, but you truly have to see the LG OLED to believe it.

Billed as “the spring break for designers,” LEGENDS 2016 kicked
off on May 3, 2016 at Fig & Olive in Los Angeles. The three-day
love aff air with all things design lived up to its celebratory label
in every way. It was THE design event of the season. With the
Coldwell Banker Previews International® program as co-sponsor, LEGENDS
was a truly unique extravaganza — and some would say, “One of a Kind”
(hence the 2016 theme). The theme also refl ected “the extraordinary character
of the La Cienega Design Quarter and the furnishings sold in the quarter,
from unusual antiques and vintage pieces to custom furniture, lighting,
fl oor coverings, hardware and other home furnishings created especially
by designers for the discriminating clientele that shops in the LCDQ,” says
spokesperson Tamar Mashigian.
The opening gala was of course one of a kind too. Over 600 interior design
luminaries and enthusiasts traveled from 21 states across the nation and
fi ve countries for their annual dose of inspiration and networking. The new
8,000 square-foot light-fi lled, indoor/outdoor space at Fig & Olive proved
to be a far more appropriate venue for the rapidly growing event, now in its
eighth year. Star designers Nate Berkus and Jeremiah Brent, as well as Ryan
Brown of Brown Design Group (former star of “Flipping Out”), Jane Hallworth
(Ellen DeGeneres’ interior designer and “Design Challenge” judge) and Estee
Stanley (designer of Patrick Dempsey’s house on the cover of Architectural
Digest) found themselves sipping signature cocktails and nibbling on crostinis.
“The synergy between design, architecture, art, antiques and real estate is
stronger than ever,” says Craig Hogan, vice president of luxury for Coldwell
Banker Real Estate LLC. “We’re thrilled to continue our involvement in this
annual celebration of the people and places that make the beautiful homes
we sell possible.”
The next two days were a whirlwind of non-stop social events and educational
moments. Book signings included India Hicks, author of “Island Life” and
“Island Style,” Jay Jeff ers, author of “Collected Cool,” and Richard Shapiro,
author of “Past Perfect,” among many others. Interesting panel discussions
also intrigued. (Madeline Stuart’s funny and thought-provoking “When
Disaster Strikes! An honest appraisal of bad clients, bad business and how
to avoid making the same mistakes, over and over” and “Celebrity Status:

More than 1,500 years ago, when the Tongva people established
settlements in the Los Angeles basin, their main village, Yang-Na, was
right in the heart of today’s Downtown Los Angeles, near City Hall. By the
late 18th century, there were Spanish settlements near the river known
as Rio de Nuestra Senora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula (River
of Our Lady Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula) and in 1781 Felipe de
Neve, the Governor of Spanish California, named the Mexican settlement
El Pueblo Sobre el Rio de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles del Río
de Porciúncula. Before long, it was simply Los Angeles.
With a population of 141 in 1841, Los Angeles experienced its fi rst
boom in 1842 with the discovery of gold at Placerita Canyon. By 1850,
the city was incorporated and California became a state. As expansion
continued nearly unabated in all directions, Los Angeles became a
hub of oil production, rail transportation, roads and agriculture. And
with those thriving industries came a population hungry for education,
entertainment, recreation and all the cultural landmarks for which the city
is today renowned worldwide. By 1890, the population was 50,000; ten
years later it had more than doubled and by 1910 it stood at more than
319,000. It topped a million in 1924; in 2014 the estimated population
was 3.9 million.
Today, Downtown Los Angeles is a thriving and vibrant community where
classic low-rise structures, such as the Library, are preserved, while
dazzling new architecture attracts attention from around the world.
With districts known for their cultural or merchandise history – fashion,
fi nancial, seafood, toys, gallery row, jewelry, Little Tokyo, Chinatown, and
so on – Downtown is known for its museums, restaurants, performance
venues and its metropolitan appeal to a growing number of residents.
Since 2000, the Downtown resident population has doubled, with 2014
estimates at 52,400 and 5,200 residential units under construction.
From restored warehouses to luxury lofts, Downtown living confi rms
what Randy Newman said back in 1983: “I Love L.A.”

Los Angeles is home, no pun intended, to homes by world-class architects including Frank Lloyd Wright (think
Hollyhock House or Anderton Court Shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills). However, most are unaware that his son, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr., (called Lloyd Wright to avoid confusion) designed more projects in the Southland than his famous father ever did. Wright began his career by apprenticing for the Olmsted Brothers (designers of New York’s Central Park). In the 1920s he moved to LA and became a production designer at Paramount Studios responsible for the castle and 12th-century village sets of “Robin Hood” starring Douglas Fairbanks. Using lumber from the dismantled sets, he created a pyramidal shell for the Hollywood Bowl in 1927 which offered superb acoustics. Numerous residences followed both in Hollywood and Los Feliz including the theatrical Mayan-inspired John Sowden House on Hollywood Boulevard, regarded as his best work (think Black Dahlia murder, too). His best-known project is the 1951 Wayfarers Chapel on the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes, an indoor/outdoor church crafted almost entirely of glass blending Wright’s brilliant design with his stellar landscaping talents. To the right, the masterfully restored Warwick Evans House, north of Sunset Boulevard in Brentwood, is available for sale. Wright created the estate in 1936 incorporating a remarkable forward-thinking open floor plan with seductive indoor/outdoor living spaces.
