Ahoy SLYC. This spring SLYC is introducing some changes to our club

sailing programs.First, there has been a recent desire voiced to return club small

boat sailing to Avila. The early roots of our club are “awash” with small boat history. There were several obstacles to overcome and our small boat committees along with our Port Captain have worked past these, and are preparing to re-introduce the Clubs’ beach launched “Hobie Wave” sailboats. Please watch your Scuttlebutts and Foghorns for details on getting oriented and checked out to use these simple boats.

The Second major club boat change is the imminent change from “Slo Sloop” our Catalina 22 sport, to a larger “central coast friendly” vessel. As was hinted at last month, your Flagship committee identified a candidate that met all the requirements for a coastal sailing yacht that better could promote local yachting among our membership.

“Slo Sloop” will remain available while she meets her sailing lesson commitments but she will be removed from flagship service and sold after that, Her replacement is a 1999 Catalina 30 Mark III, appropriately christened “Second Wind”, that will be phased in as scheduling, limits, protocols for checkout and usage are developed, As of this writing, we are awaiting a break in rain and wind storms so we can get her to Avila. My shorthand for her is “2W”. We have now hoisted the SLYC burgee on her starboard signal halyard and re- lettered her transom home port to Port San Luis, California.

The Club had considered many boats over the last few years, and we have examined and rejected a few, but “Second Wind” distinguished herself by being low hours, well ballasted, well equipped, sporting fresh sails and being cosmetically sharp for her age. We had her surveyed, then sent Staff Commodore Darrel Rundstrom and committee member Marty Fuller to run a sea trial and inspection, agreed, then commenced purchase and transit plans, SLYC

agreed that this boat was worth stepping up for, and we acquired her with the idea that some fund raising would be appropriate to support her acquisition. So if you want to support our Sailing Programs you should have several fun opportunities in the months to come.

Marty Fuller, Vice Commodore Jim Gilletly and myself departed Dana Point @ 3:15am for a 15+ hour voyage upwind to a Channel Islands harbor Boat yard to get fresh bottom paint and anodes. The next week Boatmaster Bill Dyer obtained an inexpensive slip across from his yacht “Alchemy” so she could wait out a series of late season storms. We hope to have completed transit to Avila by the end of May. She is expected to occupy our guest mooring until “Slo Sloop” is hauled.

Sr. Staff Commodore Report

by Mary Matakovich, Sr. Staff Commodore

Ahoy! What a great way to start off the month of May with

our Cinco de Mayo Brunch hosted by Judy and Hardy Hearn and Blanche and Bert Fugate donating the enchiladas and beans prepared by their staff at the Santa Maria Inn. Perfect! Then, Karen and Scott Negri cooked the rice, prepared the fruit and brought the Mexican pastries. Amazing! Karen’s mother, Lou, assisted in the kitchen, as she has for years and years. In fact, she and her husband used to barbeque for this event, establishing a fine family tradition for our club. Thank you, Lou, for this legacy!

Also, Dorie and Tom Zwinger transformed the clubhouse with beautiful table decorations and their flair for creating a good-time-was-had-by-all atmosphere!

Looking forward to the Friends of Avila Pier meeting on June 3, at 6PM here at the clubhouse. It’s great to have the pier open now to Bent 58. Lots of work now to do as the Harbor District works to get the engineering plans drawn-up for the whole pier and then, to develop a plan to realize the

convenient control. She has a roller furling jib and “lazy jack” mainsail pack for easy furling. Self tailers on the coaming, plus she has over two tons of ballast to make sailing stable and comfortable in brisk conditions common here. She has a low hour thrifty diesel auxiliary, and a wheel helm, a compass, autopilot, depth and speed instruments plus a folding cockpit table. She even has cockpit cushions. Down below she has a true enclosed head, ice box, navigation station, cushioned berths and large dinette table.

She is intended by SLYC to be a social day sailor, yachtsmen trainer and Club racer. She can accommodate crews of 5-6 comfortably, but we don’t anticipate allowing much regular overnight use, out of area cruising, onboard cooking or single handed use. We are working to possibly make her available to non sailing flag members, with the cooperation of volunteer experienced Flag member crews. She’ll have higher initial and

ongoing costs of course so use fees will be raised next year but are a bargain by any standard.

There is much work to be done, but we feel “2W” has potential to get more of SLYC out on the water more often. Several of us have spent a lot of time effort and even some of our own money to bring this opportunity to you. Please be generous, understanding, enthusiastic and forgiving as we try and enhance yachting among a wider crew of SLYC members.

Special thanks to the Flagship Committee, Staff Commodores Darrel Rundstrom, Bill Dyer, Michael Dobrzensky. Flag members Dan Pease, Jean Dyer, Marty Fuller, Ron Pigeon, Roger Briggs,Vice Commodore Jim Gilletly, Secretary Kristin Rasmussen and to the board of directors for making “2W” possible .

Wishing you fair winds and safe journeys.Nautically yours,

– Barry h

Ahoy Fellow SLYC Members.THE SLYC NEEDS YOU!

To date, we’ve had a wonderful response, from most of our members, for filling our “Time To Sign Up” volunteer positions. Thank you ALL who have. Lately, however, we’ve had a lull in required volunteer commitments. We are now in

June and have many Summer and Fall volunteer positions to fill. Those of you who have not yet signed up to volunteer, please do so, now. The SLYC By-Laws state that flag members “are requested to sign-up for their service at the time they pay their dues”. Yes…It’s time to act! So, please give back to your fellow flag members who have volunteered on your behalf and show them that you are onboard for them, as they were for you. Please visit the SLYC website today and choose your volunteer dates on our “Time To Sign Up” Sheet for 2019. If you have any questions or have trouble signing up on line, please contact me at (805)235-2279 or [email protected].

See you at the Club or on the water.—Jim h

decided to temporarily house the Gear Storage Units from Harbor Terrace in the Avila Beach parking lot. It is

Rear Commodore Report

by Mike Davis, Rear Commodore

Hello SLYC Friends!I hope everyone enjoyed their Memorial Weekend!

A shout out to my dad for Father’s Day! As I’m writing this article, I am enjoying a visit with my mom and dad who now live in Bone Cave, Tennessee. And June 21st brings us the 1st Day of Summer.

A big thanks goes out to Bill Dyer, Dennis Dempsey, Mary, Barry, Jim and Marty for assisting with a plumbing

a necessity that the storage area on Harbor Terrace gets graded, etc., to accommodate these storage units. In the meantime, please use the only entrance to the parking lot off of First Street. Sorry for any inconvenience. Looking forward to Harbor Terrace, a full camping and RV facility to be available to all of us this year, yes!

Finally, it is my responsibility as the Senior Staff Commodore to develop a Nominating Committee made-up of past Commodores with the charge to put together a slate of officers for 2020. I will be presenting our committee to

the Board for approval in August with the goal to present the slate at the September Board meeting. Please if you are interested in serving on the Board, talk to the current officers, and read our Constitution, which is printed in our directory, as it delineates what the Board positions entail. Please advise me directly of your interest in serving on the Board by August 1. I am certainly available to assist you in anyway I can to prepare for a Board position. It is a very rewarding club experience.

At your service, always, – Mary h

issue, Bill Thoma for assisting us with an electrical/lighting upgrade for the stain glass burgee and Tom Donnelly for assisting with chair maintenance.

We currently have 4 upcoming reservations and 12 completed reservations for 2019. The club can be rented by club members for party sizes of 13 to 75 people. Clubhouse reservation information is available on the Club’s website under the Member’s area.

Summer time reminders — Lost & Found Cabinet is found inside the port side restroom, please keep the club house tidy (don’t be afraid of sweeping up that beach sand or wiping down a table on occasion), used cloth towels go in the closet hamper, please tag food items stored in the refrigerator with your name/date, please use the water bib at the front door to wash off the sand and go sailing as often as you can!

Wishing you a safe and sunny summer 2019! —Mike h

Cruising News

by Lettie Fuller, Cruising Captain

Ahoy Members, Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 29th, for our

1st San Luis Yacht Club Special Cruising Event “On the Water in Port San Luis”.

My goal this year is to highlight our Port San Luis Fleet and give our members the opportunity to come aboard boats on the water, including the Club’s new Flag Ship

“Second Wind”, as well as showcase the Club’s new small boat program with the Hobie Waves.

The day’s events will include on-the-water demonstrations and instruction in the use of the Club’s Hobie Waves, tours

of the Club’s Port San Luis Fleet, and opportunities to sail with the Club’s boat owners, and possibly participate in a mock race for those interested. Sign-up sheets will be available in the Club House for the various activates. We will also provide shuttle service to and from the Club House to Port, and water taxi service to the on the water fleet.

The day’s events will culminate with happy hour and a Santa Maria Style Bar-B-Q at the Club House. So mark your calendars, and watch for the E-Vite for the evening Bar-B-Q. I hope to see everyone at this special event.

It’s not too early to start planning to join The Annual 4th of July Boat Parade in Avila. Plan to decorate your boats, get your crews, and celebrate our country’s birthday on the water with style. Line up at 11:30 am at Cal Poly Pier. We will look forward to seeing you at the Cheese Burgers in Paradise event in the Club House after the Boat Parade.

It has been a long wet winter and spring. I think we are all looking forward to some warm sunny weather, and spending time on the water.

Happy Sailing,—Lettie h
