MISSIONNontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places

women in careers in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades,

helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future. At the

same time, NEW provides a pipeline of qualified workers to the industries that

build, move, power, green, and maintain New York. For 35 years, NEW has been a

groundbreaking model that works for women and for New York City.

ABOUT NE WNEW’s free training programs give women the skills and knowledge they need to

begin careers as union tradeswomen in the construction, energy, transportation,

and facilities management industries. NEW is committed to changing the lives of

women by providing them with the opportunity to move out of poverty and into

prosperity through careers in the trades. Over the last five years, NEW has placed

women in over 1,000 construction-related jobs.

NE W SIGNATURE PROJEC TS PROGR AMIn its third year, the NEW Signature Projects Program has grown to include 35

projects across New York City. The NEW Signature Projects Program is designed to

increase the utilization of tradeswomen on New York City construction projects,

ensure an adequate supply of skilled tradeswomen are prepared for the demands

of the industry, and help industry leaders adopt best practices. NEW is honored

to celebrate the owners, construction managers, contractors, and unions who are

promoting tradeswomen participation on projects across New York City.

MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIRSWelcome to the 2013 NEW Equity Leadership Awards Luncheon. We are grateful that you

have chosen to join us today as we celebrate our 35th anniversary.

We are honored to recognize Bobby Bonanza, Mary-Jean Eastman, Joan McDonald, and

Tanya Ridley for the work they are doing to support and promote tradeswomen in New

York City.

Over the last four decades, NEW has worked with key partners in the industry to expand

opportunities for women in the skilled trades. Through the leadership of the building and

construction trades unions, women are working today as operating engineers, electricians,

carpenters, laborers, plumbers, iron workers, and painters.

With the support of owners, developers, and contractors, these tradeswomen are building

projects across New York City - these partners have committed 35 projects to the NEW

Signature Projects Program, now in its third year.

Lynda Delaney graduated from NEW at the end of 2012. In her last week of class, Lynda

shared how NEW made a difference in her life. “My daughter was all the motivation I needed

to stay focused. It has been a long journey but I made it. Here I am in my last week of training

with NEW and I feel great about it. They have taught me a lot of skills in the trades. I cannot

wait to take part in rebuilding New York City after Hurricane Sandy. Today I walk with my head

held high knowing I will succeed.” Today, Lynda is a first year apprentice carpenter with the

New York City District Council of Carpenters.

Careers as union tradeswomen ensure that women are able to provide a secure future

for their families. NEW provides much needed services to women in underserved

communities - with the poverty rate in New York City at 21 percent, there is more work to

be done.

We rely on the generosity of supporters like you to help women transform their lives.

There are numerous ways you can help NEW today – hire a graduate, commit a NEW

Signature Project, give a site tour to NEW students, make a donation, or connect us with

new supporters. If you are interested in helping NEW, please be sure to speak with a NEW

Board Member or staff member to find out how you can help. Please also join our mailing

list to stay up to date with news and events.

We are proud to celebrate all of our partners who are making a difference for women in

our city.

Thank you again for joining us today.

ROBERT BONANZA

Robert Bonanza is the Business Manager of the 15,000 member Mason Tenders District

Council of Greater New York and Long Island. Mr. Bonanza began his career more than 25

years ago as a laborer and member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America.

Bobby Bonanza represents a new generation of labor leader, dedicated to organizing,

social justice and improving the lives of the members of the union.

A lifelong resident of Nassau County, Mr. Bonanza entered the construction industry

in 1980, when as a member of General Building Laborers’ Local 66 he began his career

pouring concrete for Scalamandre Concrete. Working as a general laborer, he soon began

his rise through the ranks of the local union from shop steward, to foreman to elected

officer.

In 1996, during the period that the Mason Tenders District Council and its affiliated unions

were reconfigured, Mr. Bonanza was elected President of Local 66. He is one of the

original members of the leadership of the Mason Tenders District Council that emerged

following the historic consolidation and re-structure that took place in 1997. Under his

leadership, the Mason Tenders District Council has continued to enjoy the reputation as

one of the most progressive and aggressive labor organizations in the nation. Organizing

the unorganized and protecting the members’ rights remains Mr. Bonanza’s primary focus.

In doing so he has strengthened the Mason Tenders by bringing a diverse membership

into the Council. Today the 15,000 members include construction workers, asbestos and

hazardous materials handlers, recycling and waste handlers and Catholic high school

teachers.

Because of his deep local roots, he has cultivated strong political ties with a wide spectrum

of elected officials in Long Island and New York City. Mr. Bonanza serves as chairman of

the Mason Tenders District Council Political Action Committee, as well as a trustee of the

New York State Laborers’ PAC and the New York State Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund. He is

a member of the Executive Board of the Building & Construction Trades Council of Greater

New York, as well as the New York City Central Labor Council. Mr. Bonanza serves as a

trustee of the Mason Tenders’ District Council Trust Funds, the MTDC Scholarship Fund and

the Mason Tenders’ Training Fund, and continues to serve as president of Local 66 and as

a trustee on the Laborers’ Local 66 Fringe Benefit Funds. He is Secretary-Treasurer of the

Laborers’ Eastern Region Organizing Fund (LEROF) and serves on the Board of Tenders Inc.,

the charitable entity of the Mason Tenders District Council.

TANYA RIDLEY

Tanya Ridley graduated from Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) in the

fall of 2007 and became a Metal Lather with Local 46 Metallic Lathers and Reinforcing

Ironworkers Union in 2008. Ms. Ridley was working as a receptionist in an office in Lower

Manhattan when she applied and was accepted into NEW’s program. From behind her

desk, Ms. Ridley watched the post-September 11th rebuilding begin. From the moment

she saw a subway ad for NEW, Ms. Ridley was excited by the prospect of having the

chance to be an active part of the rebuilding. At the time, Ms. Ridley could not imagine

how NEW would change her life or that she would be where she is today – a NEW

graduate, a journeywoman Metal Lather and a role model to the tradeswomen that have

come after her.

Ms. Ridley’s first job as a Lather placed her exactly where she wanted to be – reinforcing

the foundation of Tower 4 at the World Trade Center working for Roger & Sons Concrete.

Ms. Ridley worked at Tower 4 for most of her three-year apprenticeship, learning a great

deal alongside her fellow workers in the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan. Ms. Ridley was

introduced to her first seven-day workweek by her favorite foreman, Gerry Strehle of J&E

Industries. Other recent projects she has worked on include the Second Avenue subway

line.

Ms. Ridley hopes to be the kind of mentor that female Lather mechanic and NEW graduate

Terrace Gilliam and foreman Gerry Strehle have been to her, and is tremendously thankful

for the guidance and direction she has received and continues to receive from Terrence

Moore, Business Manager/ Financial Secretary-Treasurer, and Chip Langan, Apprentice

Coordinator. She could not be more proud of the work she has been a part of, particularly

the mark that she has made at the World Trade Center, an indelible part of New York City’s

history. Today, Ms. Ridley enjoys teaching the skills she has learned from others to the new

apprentices with whom she works. Ms. Ridley comes from a family of blue collar workers,

both men and women, and she knows that each and every day she straps her reel around

her waist and takes up her pliers that her family is proud of how far she has come and

where she is heading.
