That sweetheart came home to her April 20 after 7 months deployment to Kuwait, their longest of fre-quent separations since the lieutenant enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.

“It’s so great to have him back, to see him hold the children, to know this time is past,” said Tanya. She chose to spring their dad, Everett, on their ive children, Gary, 11, Haily, 11, Ciera, 6, Landon, 2 and Jaedyn, at Jaedyn’s 5th birthday party, held at Galaxy Skateway in Melbourne.

When Mal Roberts found himself in a foreign coun-try during WWII, he didn’t expect much in return. He was doing his job as a soldier and he followed orders.

In 2010, he received a let-ter from Pierre Vimont, the French ambassador to the United States, informing him that the President of the French Republic had named Roberts a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, “as a sign of France’s true and un-

forgettable gratitude and appreciation for your personal, pre-cious contribution to the United States’ de-cisive role in the lib-eration of our country during World War II.”

The French Embassy

and the town of Celebration have arranged to bring eight veterans, including Roberts, together for

a special cer-emony on Friday, May 6 to formal-ly induct them as Chevaliers of the Legion of Honor.

In his letter to Roberts, Gaёl de Maisonneuve, Consul Geńeral of France wrote, “Your decision to ight for freedom during World War II was an admirable act, demonstrating your courage and sellessness. The solidarity

you lent our country and people as a Private First Class Soldier participating in the battle of the Rhin will never be forgotten, and be assured that we are eternally grateful.”

As his neighbors, the entire community of Viera stands with France and salutes Malcom Roberts for his service. VV

SPECIAL TO VIERA VOICE Plan to attend the 5K

Run/Walk for Water Safety Awareness at Wickham Park. Proits will beneit The Community of Caring Scholarship Fund to provide infant swimming resource lessons to families in need in Brevard County.

In Florida, drowning, a preventable tragedy, is the number one cause of ac-

cidental death in children under the age of four. Parents and grandparents who want their children to take sur-vival swimming lessons have access to them. The goal of all ISR Instructors is to save the lives of children in our county, one child at a time.

The event starts at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 14 at the Wickham Park, 2500 Parkway Drive in Melbourne. Call 321-432-3540 for more details. VV

Dr. Scott Fairchild knows first-hand the horrors of war that veterans experience. The psychologist is one.

Fairchild’s Baytree Behavior Health in Viera is a one-stop shop for anyone who has experienced trau-ma, but the retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel is known worldwide as a specialist in the needs of veterans, who are at high risk for suicide

Local expert helps veterans heal from trauma

and divorce, as well as alco-hol and drug abuse, domestic violence and other symp-toms of what is now known as post-traumatic stress disorder.

“We as a community can do so much to help our wound-ed warriors,” said Fairchild. He quoted fellow veterans-specialist psychologist Dr. Edward Tick, author of War and Soul, who said, “Some wounds don’t end with the war. The severity and extent

to which veterans suffer with PTSD is a direct response to our culture’s willingness to welcome home and care for its warriors.”

Fairchild co-founded the Viera-based nonprofit Welcome Home Vets in 2004 that operates across Brevard County and in North Florida to support returning Florida veterans and their family members with reintegration into their communities.

“Vietnamese soldiers don’t have PTSD because they received a hero’s welcome and their community tended to their warriors’ wounds. We’ve come a long way since our veterans came back from Vietnam, but once we welcome our soldiers home we can’t simply forget about them.”

Fairchild also serves as the Grief Camp Psychologist for the annual Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors (TAPS), a not-for-profit organization providing services to spouses, children and other family members of those warriors who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Unemployment and other challenges on the home front add to the returning soldier’s concerns, causing suicide to further swell that number.

Fairchild serves veterans

who come from across the country for evaluations and treatment, assisting them with qualifying for Veterans Administration assistance. He uses brain scans that prove PTSD and traumatic brain injuries and can also document recovery. In addi-tion to PTSD, he works with mood disorders, ADHD and other brain-based disorders.

Fairchild and Welcome Home Vets are planning a national retreat for veter-ans, returning from deploy-ment, and their spouses to be held in Viera this spring.

Proceeds from the com-munity event Brevard Remembers 9/11 to be held at Space Coast Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 11 will allow veterans’ families to attend at no charge.

“This will send a clear message that we appreciate the sacrifice they make—which means we don’t per-sonally have to fight to keep our children safe,” Fairchild said, “and that we as a com-munity are willing to deal with the result.”

Mother’s Day happens ev-ery day for Stephanie Kirby. The Viera mom looked over a preview of items her 8-year-old daughter Taylor was preparing for the big day in her second-grade class at Quest Elementary School.

“I realize every moment is special and I want to trea-sure each one because she is my last, Kirby said. “Having older children, I realize how fast they grow up and away. I don’t want to miss a thing.”

Crafts for the Mother’s Day Tea include placemats, decorated construction paper tea pots, bouquets of flowers in hand-crafted vases and more.

Weeks of work are no sweat when it comes to the woman in his life, said Harrison Gallagher, 8. “She makes me all my favorite foods. She does stuff for me. I really like her a lot,” he said of mom Kristi.

Fellow classmate in teacher Lori Kessel’s class, Steven Kornick had this to

BY CARL KOTALA

When their Viera High track and ield careers are over, both Harsha Torke and Sean Applewhite can rest assured they will have left their marks on the program.

Torke, a senior distance runner, holds the school record in the 1,600 meters (4:19), the 3,200 meters

Leaving a legacy at Viera track

VIERA VOICE Carl KotalaViera High seniors Sean Applewhite (left ) and Harsha Torke own fi ve individual school records between them, ensuring they will leave a healthy legacy behind them when they graduate on April 13, 2010.

(9:38) and was also part of the record-setting 4x800 relay. At last month’s Cape Coast Conference champion-ships, he pulled of a rare feat, winning the 800, the 1,600 and the 3,200.

“It felt pretty good,” the senior said. “I was a little worried that (because) the 800 and two-mile were so close together, I’d be really

drained, but I just stuck with the next guy behind me and tried to out-kick him in the end.”

Torke, who plans to walk on at Florida, has his eyes set on possibly winning a state championship in the 1,600 meters this year.

“That would be very ful-illing to know that all the work I did paid off,” he said. “When I irst started run-ning, I wasn’t necessarily that great. I was kind of mediocre. It would be nice to have risen up that much.”

Applewhite, meanwhile, didn’t have the kind of day he was hoping for at the CCC meet. He took second in both the triple jump and the long jump and was part of a 4x400 relay team that in-ished third. While that is cer-tainly nothing to be ashamed of, he was hoping to do more at the district and regional meets,

“I wasn’t too much worried about it,” the senior said of his CCC performance.

A wide receiver/corner-back on the football team, Applewhite plans to attend Western Kentucky and will attempt to play both sports as a preferred walk on.

Meanwhile, he will leave with school records in the triple jump (44-61/2), long jump 22-10 and 110-meter high hurdles (14.3). Those records are signiicant to Applewhite, who was trying to follow in the footsteps of former teammate and record holder T.J. Jackson.

“I was just trying to follow him and imitate him as much as I could, tried to do what he did, because he was really good,” Applewhite said.

Coach Dave Costello praised both athletes for what they have done as Hawks, and what they’re ca-pable of doing in the future.

“Harsha is going to be a major player in college,” Costello said. “He has a le-gitimate shot at winning the state championship in the 1,600 meters. His triple at

BASEBALLWith two regular season games to go before the start of dis-

trict playoffs, the Hawks had a 13-8 record … Cody Adams was batting .406 with ive doubles, three triples and a home run. He also had 14 RBIs … David McKay led the Hawks with 16 RBIs while Kenton Herring, Steven Martinez, Matt Cowan and Jimmy Emker each had 10 … Pitcher Jesse Schullstrom was 6-3 with a 2.87 ERA while Herring was 3-0 with a 2.29 ERA. TENNIS

Both the boys and girls teams had an incredible season, reaching the Class 3A regional inals before eventually losing to Martin County … Stephanie Hatchett, the girl’s No. 1 sin-gles player, advanced to the state tournament and also quali-

ied for the state doubles tourney with partner Katie Roslonowski … Both teams won their district tourna-ments and are very young (Katie Mullins is a senior for the girls, the boys had no seniors) which bodes well for future tennis success.

They’ve got the potential to do some great things by the time their Viera High track and field careers are over. But junior Hazel Lockard and sophomore Jackie Stengel are already off to a pretty good start.

Lockard, who moved to Florida from Alamogordo, New Mexico last year, has become one of the county’s dominant hurdlers and won the 300-meter event at the Cape Coast Conference championships last month.

She was confident she could do well at the district meet, which could lead to a spot in the regionals and possibly even the state meet.

“I’m pretty confident,” she said of the district meet. ”On a scale of 1-10, I’m about an 8.5.”

Running the hurdles seems to be a natural for Lockard, who first started running them in 7th grade while living in New Mexico. Though she didn’t tell coaches at Viera she had experience in the hurdles, it wasn’t long before they put her there, where she got the chance to learn alongside Christina Johnson.

“I like the 300 more than the 100, because I don’t have a fast twitch,” Lockard said. “The 300 lets me build my leg speed up.”

VIEra VoICE Carl KotalaApril 13, 2011, Sophomore Jackie Stengel (left) and junior Hazel Lockard have had big seasons on the track for the Hawks, and there’s more to come.

Stengel and lockard set the bar high for

Viera girls track

Ultimately, Lockard would like to break Johnson’s school record.

Stengel, meanwhile, al-ready owns three school records in the long jump, the 4X100 relay and the 400 meters, which she just began running this year. In fact, she broke the school record in the 400 in only her second or third meet, then broke it again at the CCC meet, where she finished fourth in 1:01.14.

“I like the race now,” Stengel said of the 400. “At first, I was scared to do it and it was really hard. But I just kept working at it. It got fun to me.”

Already an accomplished soccer player, Stengel is prov-ing what an exceptional ath-lete she is.

With two more years to run the event, Stengel can really lower her 400 time and hopefully get to the state meet. She also has a number in mind for the long jump. She was fifth at the CCC meet.

“I’d like to get 18 (feet),” she said. “I’ve gotten it be-fore, but I scratched, so it doesn’t count.”

Hawks coach Dave Costello believes both girls have bright futures.

“Hazel had Christina Johnson to help her last year and she just fed off her,” Costello said. “She hasn’t lost in the intermediate hurdles all year. Jackie’s just special. She’s a special athlete. She works extremely hard.

“To me, she doesn’t feel any pain. She goes out in the 400 meters and the first time she did it, she said, ‘I can do bet-ter than that.’ Now, she’s one of the best in the county.”

The VELGA (Viera East Ladies Golf Association) 18-hole league played its an-nual 2-week Championship game on April 5 and 12. The championship was the best gross score for the two days, along with low net. Competition also included low net scores by flights (A, B, C and D). An award cer-emony, presided over by Club President Rhonda Breault, was held at Concepts on Highland in Melbourne on April 14. Prizes were also given for the most chip-ins and the most birdies made during the year. Ringer awards were presented by

Bonnie Miller according to flights, with five awards per flight. Congratulations to the winners.

It had been their goal since they were denied winning the District 8 championship last season and this time, the Viera High lacrosse club team came through.

By beating Satellite 9-8 in the title game last month, the Hawks made all of their hard work pay off.

“Basically, we started last May working on this,” Coach Mark Lorusso said. “To get to that point and win the district title was one of the greatest days I’ve ever expe-rienced, and I know that’s the same for our kids and our other coaches.

VIEra VoICE PhotoViera Voice is proud to sponsor the Little League Pirates team. We enjoy watching these young athletes as they are learning valuable lessons in sportsmanship, teamwork and responsibility.

VIEra VoICE Carl KotalaViera High School lacrosse club co-captains Billy Bierlein (yellow gloves) and Connor Payne (front) work against each other during a practice drill.

It was fantastic. Big smiles all around.”

Viera’s attack unit: Michael Alvarez (3 goals, 2 assists), Kevin Rodier (2 goals, 1 as-sist) and Kevin Rego (2 goals, 4 assists) all came up big for the Hawks in the win. Viera played undefeated Boca Raton, ranked No. 2 in the state, the next day and lost in the regional playoffs.

Still, the Hawks went 15-2 on the season.

Rodier and Billy Bierlein will play at UCF next season, while Connor Payne will take his lacrosse game to the University of Florida.

Winning the district title can only do wonders for

Viera lacrosse wins district title

the Viera program. The fact that it came against another Brevard County team also says a lot about the strength of lacrosse in the area, even if the Hawks are playing at the club level right now.

“It sets the tone for what we need to do in the future,” Lorusso said. “It helps us set our goals for where we want to be. Now, it’s getting beyond regional games and getting into contention for state championships. With a new program, it takes time to get to that level, but I’d say we’re right on track to make some noise at a level beyond districts.” VV

Hundreds of families at-tended the Spring Festival at Centre at Suntree on Saturday, April 16, enjoy-ing free bounce house fun, pony rides and other entertainment.

“These festivals are great fun for the entire family,” said event coordinator Linda Angelo. The festival takes place each spring and fall. “It was truly a festive atmo-sphere with games, prizes,

music and more.”Fourteen tenants

at the strip mall took part. The fan favorite, Red Ginger Chinese Restaurant, gave out free food freshly prepared throughout the festival.

There were nearly 40 vendors and 30 nonproit organi-zations. The com-munity agencies take part to raise awareness for their organizations.

“This is always a great event,” said Pam Rogan, founder of Harmony Farms equestrian center for chil-dren with disabilities. She promoted her new program for disabled veterans that uses horses as therapy to help recover from trauma.

“It’s really important to have these types of op-portunities to get the word out at no cost to the people who need it, and to ind the people who can make these services happen with dona-tions,” Rogan said. VV

Spare change helps students change lives

BY LINDA WIGGINS Towering piles of change

covered a small table sur-rounded by irst- and sec-ond-graders in tiny chairs. Students in Carol Albright’s and Monica Slate’s tandem class at Suntree Elementary School learned that change in their parents’ pockets means change in children’s lives.

“They were really amazed that doing something so easy could add up to so much, that it’s easy, not hard, to help others,” Albright said of the total $273.59 raised.

It will be matched by Space Coast Credit Union for a total of $547.59 and donated to the America Red Cross for the Japan disaster.

“They know how easy it is to reach out and help, to change people’s lives - chil-dren like themselves across the globe who are hurting.”

The teachers used the lesson to teach math skills from tallying coins and social studies skills by examining other parts of the world.

“We learned they had an earthquake under the sea, which made the earth shift, causing the tsunami,” said Noah Villafane, 8.

Added Esther Francom, 8, “There was also ire. People’s houses burned down.”

“Money can be useful to help hurting people feel bet-ter,” 8-year-old Soia Belin concluded.

Albright and Slate expand-ed on the project to help . Closer to home, students will do a Service Learning project to help rising second grad-ers at Endeavour Elementary in Cocoa get ready over the summer by packing goody bags for students containing books, hands-on activities and learning games.

The student-named project, SHINE, stands for Students Helping and Initiating Never-ending Excellence, a long title any of the students can recite on

command. Materials will be paid for by a readiness grant devoted to getting students in the economically chal-lenged area surrounding Endeavour prepare to learn.

Suntree students will meet their buddies – with whom they are already practicing writing skills as pen pals – on a ield trip to the Cocoa school May 13.

“This will give them a head start,” said Evan Krassel, 8. For more information call 321-242-6840. VV

Why are Suntree and Viera schools A - schools?

BY KEN PREVITI & LINDA WIGGINS

What does it take to make an A school, something Viera, Suntree and south Rockledge have in abundance among Brevard County schools? It is something Brevard is proud to claim. The factor is a selling point to parents, Realtors, and businesses hoping for economic growth.

“The sole factor that impacts schools negatively is poverty. This factor is [universally] recognized,” said Christine Davis, director of communications for Brevard County Schools. “In Brevard, the factor can be seen and quantiied on our site in the regression charts displaying school percentages of stu-dents who are eligible for free or reduced lunch programs. The interesting part is to see how our schools generally per-form higher than other Florida schools in spite of this factor.”

The truth is, no one knows why our students do so well, but the answer is certainly not a simple one.

Davis said, “The quality of Brevard’s teachers is well known and appreciated. Our schools have a good record of attracting and retaining outstanding teachers.”

Ginger Blair is school district coordinator of PACE, which stands for Parental And Community Engagement. Parent, community and business involvement is high across Brevard and especially in the Viera/Suntree area, which it is critical to high performing students and schools.

“Parental support and involvement are priceless, with all the homework help and encouragement adding up over time. Parental involve-ment in our community has a unique village approach. Science scores, in particu-lar, excel on the Space Coast where many parents with science backgrounds share interests,” Blair added.

Robert Schwader of Viera is a safety engineer at Kennedy Space Center for Millennium Engineering and Integration Company. He shares his enthusiasm for science with his daughters on a regular basis.

“I look forward to working with my children in the near future in both math and sci-ence. I also hope to be more involved at their schools. It’s fun to build an experiment and see the outcomes,” he said.

Blair also credited the Conti nued on pg 21

involvement of large com-panies anchored in the Viera/Suntree area as assets toward creating A schools. She mentioned the Viera Foundation and Health First, which recently opened the Viera Hospital as examples.

Ginger Davis, a resource teacher for middle school science said, “We have strong community support for sci-ence, including generous inancial support, time, re-sources, and expertise. Just a few examples include compa-

nies such as Harris, Boeing, United Launch Alliance, and agencies such as NASA, Florida Solar Energy Center and the many individuals who volunteer at science fairs as judges, as mentors, and as scholarship sponsors. With representatives from Astronaut, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island, Rockledge and Viera high schools, 120 students competed in the JROTC pentathlon on Saturday, April 16, 2011.

VIERA takes top honors at JROTC pentathlonThey competed in 5 events: academic testing, a physical fitness challenge, a 1.5 mile cross-country rescue course, the construction and crossing of one-man rope bridges and the Humvee pull, when the cadets pulled a military grade

Humvee nearly a quarter of a mile, the last several yards of which we’re on an incline. The eight-man Viera team placed first in the overall for male teams, the Humvee pull for males, the one-man rope bridge for males and the cross country rescue for males.

What makes this accomplishment even more noteworthy is the fact that this is the first year for this team of high school students to compete on this level. VV

State and local budget

cuts keep the prospect of a middle school in Viera on indefinite hold, to the frus-tration of parents, students and those interested in community development.

“We have our great el-ementary schools and the beautiful Viera High School. We look forward to the day we have our middle school right in our own commu-nity,” said Deb Tomczak, a Realtor with Viera Realty. “It’s a downside to have to send our children out of the community for those years of their education.”

A. Duda & Sons donated the land for the high school and the planned adjacent middle school. A huge mound of dirt nicknamed “Mount Viera” was intend-ed for the middle school on completion of the high school, but budget cuts redirected construction re-sources elsewhere. Suntree and Viera students typi-cally go to Delaura Middle School in Satellite Beach, Kennedy Middle School in Rockledge or magnet schools of choice.

The angst suffered by parents and students re-garding the transporting and busing students to middle schools continues.

“We got redistricted each year and had to move our son from elemen-tary school to elementary school. In the end, we had to send him out of the area for middle school,” said

Viera Middle School remains on indefi nite

hold

VIERA VOICE Ken Previti Lack of a middle school in Viera led Jacob Palmer of Viera out of town to complete his K-12 educati on. He managed to excel, joining Project Pink roboti cs team and ROTC at McNair Middle School and choosing Rockledge High School to remain in the magnet school of choice’s Cambridge program.

As the school year progresses and decisions are made, parents and friends can go online to check a child’s school designati on. When address and grade levels are entered,

the assigned schools are shown.

Go to edulog.brevard.k12.fl .us/edulog/webquery/

Brian Hill of Viera, whose son Joshua now attends Kennedy Middle School.

Optimum use of present facilities and the reloca-tion of students to meet these budgetary mandates is complex and demanding on many levels – human and financial – according to school district officials.

In addition to breaks in the education continuum, the changes are hard on friendships.

“It was hard leaving Manatee [Elementary School]. We didn’t know about funding for buses or where bus stops would be, so we all chose different middle schools for differ-ent reasons,” said Jacob Palmer, a 9th grader. “The kids from Manatee could go to Kennedy or other places. My parents and I chose McNair [Middle School] to be in the Cambridge pro-gram. Some kids also got into a lottery for Cocoa Beach Jr./Sr. High. It was re-ally confusing.”

Rather than attend Viera High School, Jacob applied to and was accepted at Rockledge High School be-cause he wanted to contin-ue the Cambridge program. Friends from elementary and middle school followed their various choices. Jacob is presently part of the Project Pink robotics team and ROTC.

How do those kinds of choices and decisions affect social connections?

“Well, we have Facebook and other social network sites. That’s it,” he said. VV

Dartha Hilbert retired from the 45th Space Wing as a USAF civilian working at Patrick Air Force Base for most of her career. Volunteering became a priority once her new routine settled in. She has worked as a grant writer for the Brevard Rescue Mission, which helps women with children through its residential program in Melbourne. She serves as president of the Women’s Fellowship at Faith Viera Lutheran Church, where she is an oficer in the Lutheran Women’s Mission League. She has been a chaplain’s assistant at the Brevard County Jail and a board member for the Brevard County March of Dimes with Wuesthoff Hospice’s therapy dog program.

What makes you want to volunteer? I feel called to help those who cannot help themselves.

What causes are you most passionate about? Those that help the least, the suffering, the forgotten in our society. I appreciate the opportunity to share the love of Jesus in our community.

How did you get inspired to reach out to others? My father was active in politics and commu-nity service as a Realtor, so I guess I get the community service from him

What might be a way to make a difference in the community?I had many opportunities to observe inmates, and something struck me about female in-mates. It seemed to me that if they had better relationship skills, they might not make the poor choices that often resulted in the offens-es that sent them to jail and if they had better parenting skills, they could be an example for their children that might break the cycle for the next generation. The women who volun-teer to teach the Bible classes at the jail pro-vide excellent role models for these women as they seek to ind a better life and to rely on their faith for strength. This holds true for the men too and the Good News Jail & Prison Ministry at the Brevard County Jail does an excellent job working with both males and fe-males. Lives have been changed through this ministry. VV

Future Problem Solvers is an internationally-recognized organization that engages students in creative problem solv-ing. Founded by creativity pioneer and psychologist, Dr. E. Paul Torrance, FPS stimulates critical and creative thinking skills and encourages students to develop a vision for the future. Through active participation in this school-sponsored club, students develop skills of teamwork, communication, research, critical and creative thinking, analysis, synthesis and evaluation.

The FPS team from Viera High School has been invited to participate in the FPS international competition – a first for the school. They placed second at the state level, out of 100 schools competing.

The international competition is scheduled for June 9 through June 12 at University of Wisconsin, La Crosse.

The cost of the entire trip will be approximately $5,000, which will cover the entry fee to the competition, airfare, room and board as well as the meals for the four student participants and two teacher sponsors.

The team is turning to its community to help them solve the problem of financing the trip and bring home a world championship trophy.

Checks can be made out to Viera High School: Future Problem Solvers Club and mailed to Viera High School, Attn: Cathy Hinely, 6103 Stadium Pkwy. Viera, FL 32940-6601.

BY LINDA WIGGINS Small businesses are begin-

ning to open their doors or expand in growing numbers in the Viera Suntree area, said a local business develop-ment oficial, perhaps pro-viding tangible evidence of economic recovery.

“We are seeing folks who have been waiting on the sidelines now leasing vacant space and open-ing their doors or expand-ing,” said Janice Fox, of the Viera/Suntree ofice of the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida. The local ofice sup-

ports businesses in all man-ner of growth and offers resi-dents and travelers ideas on where to eat, stay and play through its visitor center and online site.

Brian and Cara Hill of Viera are among the latest to open a new business. Their Bagel Box & Creamery was a dream for years, but the high cost of lease space kept them dreaming. The deli is located at the northwest corner of Murrell Road and Viera Blvd., in space carved out of the former Home Center.

“We thought, ‘if not now, when’?’ said Brian Hill.

Hill is a ireighter para-medic for Brevard County Rescue’s Unit 62. He takes advantage of his schedule, which trades long daily shifts for extra days off per week. He spends those days mak-ing sandwiches and salads for the growing lunch crowd, serving up hand-dipped ice cream cones and toasting up gourmet bagels and mufins to serve with locally roasted coffee.

at Viera High School, getting the shop ready for the day, pre-dawn and then return-ing after her job. Wedged in between, is the primary care for the couple’s son, Joshua, who attends Kennedy Middle School.

“We knew that in order to build this business we were really going have to do much of the work ourselves,” Brian Hill said.

The Viera/Suntree Chamber ofice is itself a new Viera business, having opened its doors earlier this year.

“We really saw this as

an area that our members’ businesses are looking to grow in, so we felt we really needed to establish a physi-cal presence as well,” Fox said. “We believe Viera is an importance commerce area that will only get more vital in the coming months and years.” VV

David and Valentina Dashi expanded their Amici’s Ital-ian Restaurant in Viera to add a bakery and banquet facility, but it is not exactly a sign of economic rebound.

“I felt that since the econo-my was down, I needed to do something extra that would help new customers ind me,” said Dashi.

The risk paid off.“I get people coming from

all over because they hear about our specialty Italian bakery, with special cook-ies and everything else you can imagine from the region that is famous for food, plus anything you could want from a general bakery. They tell me, ‘Oh, I didn’t know there was

a restaurant back here.’ Then they come for lunch or dinner,” Dashi said.

Amici’s is located in the Boardwalk center on the north side of Wickham Road on the border of Suntree and Viera, just east of Interlachen Road. Most of the businesses are deeply set behind Wickham and not visible from the busy road.

“Existing restaurant custom-ers made a ready market for the bakery,” Dashi said.

His secret weapon may have been a fellow import from Italy, Marie Rebaza, who grew up in the Bronx while Daishi was raised in Brooklyn, NY.

“I think New York is just as important as Italy in the importance it places on good

food made authentically,” said Rebaza, who has 30 years experience working in and managing bakeries.

Rounding out the culinary experience is David’s wife, Valentina, who was born in Croatia. The dishes from the region also known as Hungary are known for their savory appeal.

The three of them are alike in that they are focused on food as if it were a religious experience, often standing by, excited to see the reaction of a customer taking a irst bite, perhaps challenging a custom-er to guess a special ingredi-ent. Inshore - The Banana and Indian River lagoons will continue to be active for redfish and sea trout. Look for the snook bite to be hot in May. The best place to target the redfish and sea trout are in the flats or near the spoil islands using live mullet or shrimp. The snook like moving water and hanging around docks or bridges at night. Snook prefer live mullet, greenys, and light colored buck tail jigs.

Offshore - In the Atlantic ocean along the Brevard coast, look for mahi mahi to be running out in the Gulf Stream in about 70 to 90 feet of water. Best bait for mahi is a trolled Ballyhoo. On the beach side, watch the bait pods for tarpon and king-fish. Slow troll live bait for these fish in about 15 to 35 feet of water.

Fresh Water - The large mouth bass bite starts to increase in the St. Johns River. Use purple or pumpkin seed colored plastic worms to catch them. Look for blue and channel catfish in the deeper areas on the St. Johns River using dead shrimp as bait for the cats.

Surf - In May, anglers should see good catches of whiting, pompa-no, redfish, and black drum along Brevard County beaches. The top baits to use in the surf are sand

SCRAPBOOKING

As part of this goal, each grade level was tasked with inding a project that integrated real world experiences and academic skills. Second grade teachers were interested in a global per-spective for their project since second grade standards include learning about world geog-raphy and limited natural resources. The recent looding in Pakistan provided a current area of critical need.

The project began with a unit of study in ge-ography focusing on the continents and oceans. This was followed up with a ield trip to the Water Treatment Facility in Viera to learn about reclaimed water and the puriication process. Next, a representative from the City of Cocoa Utilities Department visited students at their schools to teach them about local water service and water conservation. Finally, students were ready to start working.

To support the home-and-school connection, second graders completed water-related chores at home for one month and helped their families practice ways to conserve water. They earned money for their chores and recorded their ac-complishments on their job charts each week.

The total amount of money earned for provid-ing clean water for Pakistan by Suntree second grade students was $350, which was donated to the American Red Cross to provide water treat-ment tablets for the people of Pakistan. VV

Association Living

Frank Kneiser

The Limpkin (Aramus guarauna)

The limpkin, an elusive water bird, lives in Florida’s freshwater wetlands. It survives almost exclusively on apple snails. Its curved bill has a gap which acts like tweezers and is uniquely suited to extract the mollusk from the curved shell. Worms, insects, and mussels com-plement the diet. The loud, distinctive wail of the limpkin is often heard early in the morning or at night. Therefore, it is sometimes nicknamed the wailing bird.

Limpkins generally produce three to eight chicks. They are precocial: At birth they are covered with down and able to move. They leave the nest about one day after hatching. Within three months, they fledge. VV

Do we need a management

company?By FrAnk kneiser

Deciding whether your Association needs a profes-sional management company boils down to two simple questions.

What does a management company do?

Generally, a manage-ment company administers the business affairs of the Association. This includes ar-ranging all meetings, taking minutes, creating and imple-menting budgets, account-ing, overseeing vendors and

Parting Shot by Charlie Corbeil

implementing rules and regulations. There are many details to each of these items and each Association may want to add or subtract from the list. The manage-ment company re-ports to the board of directors.

Why can’t we do these things ourselves? Associations certainly can and many do. Some Associations have residents who are willing to dedicate the time required. With more than one volunteer, you may be able to take advantage of

their special interests. For example, some volunteers are knowledgeable in land-

scaping and enjoy it. Someone else may enjoy ac-counting or record keeping. Smaller Associations may find it more cost effective to manage themselves.

Association board members

are volunteers. Their incen-tive to serve is the welfare of the Association. They have families, full time jobs or other interests and re-sponsibilities that may keep them from providing the time required. Many retirees quickly decide that retire-ment does not mean working for the Association it is not

unusual to find boards made up of Snowbirds. A profes-sional property management company alleviates these situations.

There must be well defined communications and report-ing procedures between the board and management. When this is accomplished and the management com-pany understands its param-eters, continuity and synergy are established for the Board. Florida requires property managers be licensed and keep abreast of the latest developments of their pro-fession by taking continuing education courses through-out the year. Therefore, boards can rely on manage-ment companies to provide a broad depth of resources that may not be readily avail-

able to the Association.Hiring an outside com-

pany relieves your board of the burdens and rigors of property management. This means peace of mind for the board and residents alike. Choosing the right manage-ment company allows you to enjoy your home and main-tain the property values of your Association.

It’s important to point out that Mr. Kneiser is not an at-torney and legal questions should be referred to your attorney. However, a re-quirement of his Community Association Manager’s license is to stay abreast of the Florida Association laws. Contact him with any ques-tions at [email protected]. VV

Special to Viera Voice

As a part of the King Center’s continued efforts to enrich the lives of theatre and drama stu-dents at Brevard Community College and various high schools in the county, a chat back with the cast members of Mamma Mia was held after the opening night performance on April 4. More than 50 students from BCC and Viera High School attended as 3 members from the cast returned to the theatre to speak with them about the show and their lives as performers.

Cast members told “behind the scenes” stories of what it is like to be on tour with a Broadway production and talked about other roles they’ve had throughout their careers. The students asked questions ranging from preparing for audition to the im-portance of finishing their education and getting their degrees.

The King Center has expressed its committed to inspiring the next generation’s love of the theatre by continuing to offer more “chat back” opportunities in the future to allow drama students the chance to interact with others who have once been in their shoes that are now living their dreams. VV
