A brief of these nine years should be mentioned. “We were initially known as the Mercantile Athletic Association. However, due to various factors amongst which were no accounts, no AGMs and no meets, the association was suspended. Subsequently, it was revived with a name change as the Mercantile Athletic Federation. Here again, due to various problems similar to what took place earlier, it was to be sus- pended for the second time, when I was elected President in the year 2000 I was determined to forge ahead despite all these obstacles. I was also a Vice President of the AAA at that time and appealed to the then President of the AAA, Sunil Gunawardhana, to withhold the sus- pension and give are six months to transform the MAF into a powerful body to be reckoned with. I am thank- ful to him for acceding to my request inspite of opposition from other Ex- Co Members. Audited Accounts revealed that we were saddled without funds and a long list of debtors. The next step was to summon a Annual General meet- ing and this opportunity was seized to chase out the destructive spiders and break the cobwebs. At this juncture, I must mention the names of three gen- tlemen who during my nine years at the Mercantile Athletic Federation, stood by me right along. They are Ranjith Weerasena, Vice President, Sachithanandan, Secretary, Gamini Weerasingha, Athletic Secretary. The next step was to organise a meet and obtain a sponsor for this purpose. I personally visited some of the leading mercantile firms and met the people who matter regarding sponsorship who in most instances were known to me. “The bottom line of almost All dis- cussions were “We will see next year” “I understood this attitude, know- ing the past reputation of the Mercantile Athletic Association. We were now running short of time and the situation was desperate. Ultimately, on a friendly level I per- suaded four small timers to help us out, which they willingly did, with the balance coming out of our pock- ets. Having the meet at the Sugathadasa Stadium was out of the question due to financial constraints, resulting in the meet being held at the Race course. The meet was a tremen- dous success! So much so that, some events were conducted in semi dark- ness, due to the unpresidented num- ber of entries. I am most thankful to the print media for all the publicity and highlighting of all our difficul- ties. From 2001, it was no problem. Sponsors were available, press confer- ences were held prior to the meets. The reputation we had gained was really reflected by the fact that on two occasions the meet was sponsored by a mercantile firm who had no partici- pants. In 2006 and 2008, when I was heavily involved in international events which were held in Sri Lanka, the meets wee successfully held with- out sponsors. The Executive Committee of the Mercantile Athletic Federation was carefully selected since 2001 and this also contributed to our success. I am certain that the newly elected president and commit- tee will continue the good work and avoid pitfalls which would result in our reaching the pre-2000 era.” MAF unanimously elects first Hon.
