The actor says he has faced a lot a rejection and the failures have made him what he is. "Success doesn't teach you anything. Failures, rejections, they make you the man that you are. In my life, I've mostly seen rejections and failures and flops. I am a living example of an actor making a career out of flops," Bajpayee told PTI. "You can count my hit films on your fingertips. But if you count the number of flops that I am proud of, they are several in numbers," he adds. The actor, best known for featuring in critically acclaimed films like "Satya", "Shool" and "Gangs of Wasseypur", says movies which do not work at the box office, are often the ones which have longer shelf life. "I am here because of those 'so called' flop films as they were appreciated the most. They take me all around the world. 'Aligarh' and 'Budhia Singh' are still running in some pockets of the world." The actor, meanwhile, is relieved that his latest "Naam Shabana" is a success and says the team is extremely happy as it was an important film. The action-thriller features Taapsee Pannu in the lead role. "For a film like this, the public appreciation matters a lot. It is very important for people to go to a theatre and watch the film. A girl is leading the film so it becomes exciting if people appreciate cinema like this. "It sets an amazing precedent for all the films where women will be playing a pivotal role in the future. The actress also said that she did the forthcoming period drama "Begum Jaan" as she wanted to find a way to vent her anger. She spoke about the film and her relationship with Siddharth during a chat show "Yaar Mera Superstar Season 2" along with filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. The episode went on air on Zoom on Saturday, read a statement from the channel. When the show's host asked Vidya about the kind of anger she shows in the film, Vidya said: "I wanted to unleash that part of me and all it took was a conversation with Bhatt saab on a flight. We were promot- ing 'Hamari Adhuri Kahani' so, I told him that I wanted to give an expression to my anger, I have a lot of anger." The actress added: "The long and short of it is that he came to me with 'Begum Jaan'…But to actually give vent to that kind of anger, aggression, wasn't easy. "But it was fun, once you break the limits, it was a lot of fun. It's so freeing. Siddharth believes that I do have a violent streak." Begum Jaan is a Hindi adaptation of National Award-winner Srijit Mukherji's critically acclaimed Bengali outing "Rajkahini". The film sees Vidya play a brothel owner in a story of survival set against the backdrop of the country's partition in 1947. The film, produced by Mahesh and Mukesh Bhatt's Vishesh Films, is set to release on April 14. HYDERABAD, (PTI) Academy Award-winning composer AR Rahman never realised that he was born for music and it was his mother who predicted that he would be a music composer. The music director said his mother made a choice and motivated him to make a career in music. "I never knew that I was born for music. My mom made the choice and she kind of predicted that I will be a music composer. The day I realized that music would be my passion and future was when I went to my studio that had no equipment. "It was just a shell; just a sound proof room with an AC that smelled new. I felt one day I will have all types of equipment all over this place that I can't afford now." Rahman, who participated in a panel discus- sion here on "Creativity in Innovation," alongside fellow Oscar winner Resul Pookutty, said his only aim was to practice and learn music. "Around 1986, I stopped playing for other composers. I felt practicing or learning about music was my investment. I didn't care about op- portunities. "If you are good enough, people will come to you. You have to raise your standards and prove that you are passionate. Then you don't have to go behind people. I felt it's a jinx to go behind people." Resul said sound mixing as a craft was not known in India until he won the Academy Award for Slumdog Millionaire. "Sound mixing as a craft was not known until I won an Oscar for 'Slumdog Millionaire.' It took 81 years for an Asian to win an Oscar in sound. For me, it took four- teen years. "In the very beginning of my career, I felt the whole study that I have done was not important. I learned that I have to create something new in the industry. Hard to survive in showbiz if you are honest: Raveena Tandon MUMBAI, (IANS) National Award-winning actress Raveena Tandon says she faced many difficulties in her professional life for speaking the truth and that it is hard to survive in the entertainment industry if a person is transparent and honest. Apart from her craft, Raveena is known for her outspoken nature. Asked if she had to pay a price for it, she told IANS here: "Yes, I think at times it is challenging and hard to survive in the entertainment industry if you are honest. I faced a lot of trouble for that, where I have been thrown out of films. I have been called a liar and I have been treated badly. "However, I stuck to being honest and treated people with respect… something that I have learnt from my upbringing. All I knew is that time will unveil the reality. Today, I live with a clear heart and sleep in the night with a clear conscience. So I have no regrets." After making her Bollywood debut with "Patthar Ke Phool" in 1991, Raveena went on to act in films like "Dilwale", "Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi", "Aks", "Satta" and won a National Award for Kalpana Lajmi's "Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence". The actress, who will soon be seen in "Maatr", believes that all women have a loving and caring nature that the world celebrates, but forgets about the inner strength that they possess. According to her, perhaps that is why the outer world thinks women are weaker - which is untrue. Since childhood, Raveena has been caring for wounded crows, stray dogs and cats. HYDERABAD (PTI) Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner says if Yuvraj Singh continues his rampaging form in the tournament they have every chance of defending their Indian Premier League title. Warner was all praise for Yuvraj, who played a swashbuck- ling 62-run knock to help Sunrisers beat Royal Challengers Ban- galore by 35 runs in the IPL 2017 opener in Hyderabad. "That's the Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) that I am used to watching on TV. It was superb stroke and clean hitting play from him, he backed himself. That's the way that we know he can play and that's the way that we want him to keep playing," Warner said at the post match press conference. "If he can do that another five or six times in the tournament we will easily make the final and can also win," he added. Warner hailed the entire Sunrisers team for putting up a fantastic performance in the first game. "A great start. We take lot of confidence from the win. Before the game we had some pressure because we are defending champi- ons. But the way we came out and played it was fantastic. Our middle-order and top-order were fantastic. 200 on this wicket was a good score. "While defending there were a few nerves in the middle but we needed just one wicket. It was Fantastic a all- round effort," he said. Warner was also happy to see Shikhar Dhawan scoring some runs on the board at the top.

More than midway into theturbulent take on thedestiny of star-crossed

lovers on the run, the UttarPradesh ki Juliet aka Julie, whohas been raped by her sexed-upfiance, is told by her father-likeelder brother to calm down. "Ishouldn't be saying this. But mysister, you are so pretty. Any manwould get carried away," gigglesbig brother Priyanshu Chatterjeeanxiously, unwilling to break analliance that means huge politi-cal gains for him and his family. This is normal procedure in a sec-tion of the Cow Belt. Make thedaughter a sacrificial cow for yourpersonal gains. And when sheshows more spirit than that bottleon the table, k i l l her. Fami lyhonour, you know. This is one ofthe more disturbing moments infilm that's plotted like a wildlycascading stream toppling andtumbling across a craggy pathbefore crashing to a halt in a stateof exhausted exaltation."Mirza Juuliet" is a love saga on

constant heat. Its protagonists arenot afraid to discuss sex. And it'srefreshing to see the heroine (PiaBajpai), a sexed-up version ofPar ineet i Chopra in HabibFaisal 's " Ishaqzaade", bluntlyasking her renegadeRomeo(Darshan Kumaar, gentleyet persuasive) if he has ever hadsex. It's also refreshing to see aHindu-Muslim love story wherethe lovers' religious identity isnever really an issue. Their so-cial status is. The sexual blunt-ness of the film is a major asset. It gives to the otherwise-modestnarration a voluptuous fulsomelook."Mirza Juuliet" is l ike a LandRover ploughing through a muddybumpy road in pursuit of a dragonthat needs to be slain before itturns around to devour the film'senergetic over tures indicatingminds that want to leap higherthan conventional love stories, butare not always able to negotiatethat chasm that separates willfrom target. Director Rajesh Ram

Singh has done an original, some-times vigorous, otherwise limpand sagging, take on the Romeo-Juliet/Mirza-Sahibaan sagas. Hemixes and matches the two lovelegends with wild creative aspi-rations.Sometimes, the blend of the fa-miliar and the unexplored is glar-ing in its mismatch. The film'sever-horny villain-clown playedwith over-the-top gusto byChandan Roy Sanyal , neverknows when to be the jester andwhen the rapist. Darshan, memo-rable as Mary Kom's compas-sionate husband and the honour-killer brother in "NH10", brings aquiet strength to the role of thetroubled Muslim youth who istired of being used as a politicalpawn. Pia Bajpai is all over theplace. She is brash and bawdy. Not the kind of girl you would wantto invite to your daughter's wed-ding.The l ine between bacchanaliaand crime are blissfully blurredin the Indian hear tland. Goons go

on a shooting rampage laughingtheir heads off and blowing eachother 's brains off as thoughQuentin Tarantino and AnuragKashyap had just signed a dealto promote tourism during timesof hear tland crime. One of theheroine's brothers gets his fingerblown off at the star t. That acci-dent remains an ongoing joke forall the characters. They don'twatch much of Ekta Kapoor's se-rials for enter tainment. The menplot and plan political perversityas ladies, in newly-purchasedcotton saris in gaudy shades, hover around looking like man-nequins in the flea market.Nonetheless, the fi lm is well-crafted. And it builds up to athoughtful and thundering climaxwhere Mirza and Juliet get theircomeuppance. "Mirza Juuliet" isfun while it lasts. It has a certaincelerity in its narration and thecocky confidence of the kind thatKapil Sharma displays when hespeaks English although he is notfluent in the language.

'MUKTI BHAWAN': POWERFULAND MESMERISING

Touching upon the subject ofsalvation and faith, "MuktiBhawan" is a promising tale oflife and relationships narratedthrough the eyes of a devotedson. Just like one celebratesbir th where a woman goes tothe hospital to deliver, thisfilm celebrates death, wherean old man goes to MuktiBhavan, a hospice on thebanks of the river Ganges inVaranasi, in the hope ofattaining salvation whileawaiting his final call. The 77-year-old Daya (LalitBehl) who is fondly addressedas Babuji, gets a premonitionthat his days are numbered. And, like a true Hindu, heexpresses his desire to spendhis last few days on the banks

of the holy river. His son Rajiv(Adil Hussain) reluctantlyaccompanies him, more out ofduty than love. And just like ina delivery, the audience too issubjected to the labour painswhich at the end of theviewing, though sad, bringtears of joy and fulfilment.Though there is nothingmorbid about the film, thenarrative is shrouded inmelancholy making it atragicomedy. Humour sur-faces through the subtle,down-to-ear th one linerswhich also double up asstrong messages that ques-tions practicality and tradi-tions. This is Writer-DirectorShubhashish Bhutiani'smaiden feature film which

with moderate productionbudget, is astutely handled. The writing is intenselymature and understated andthe film is mounted withflourish. Each frame bycinematographers DavidHuwiler and MichaelMcSweeney, is ar tisticallycrafted, especially the indoorshots. The characters arewell-etched so much so thatyou are drawn to themnaturally. And it is the stimu-lating and realistic per for-mances that make this film atreat to watch. Adil Hussainas Rajeev - the obedient andever-obliging son, who isfrequently on his mobilephone, torn between his fatherand work, is impressive.

'Blue Mountains': Uninspiring and insipidThe title in the film "Blue Mountains" is used as a metaphorto drive away the blues in one's life. It iscrafted with good intentions to help children understand theimpor tance of par ticipation over winning.Set in a small hilly town in Nor th India, writer-directorSuman Ganguli's "Blue Mountains" is the story of a youngboy Som Sharma, who stands-in for his best friend Akks(Vaibhav Hanshu) during the audition of a reality showcalled "Ragarocks" and gets sucked into the vor tex ofpopularity. But his quest to attain stardom is shor t-lived.Som returns home only to sink into the abyss of low self-esteem. Yathar th Ratnum as Som, Simran Sharma as Oshin,Vaaibhav Hanshu as Akks and Rishabh Sharma as Humpty.Among the older actors, Ranvir Shorey as Som's father is ahuge disappointment. He sleepwalks through his characterwith a frown pasted on his visage. Gracy Singh in anunderdog act as Som's mother Vani Sharma, once a celeb-rity singer and Rajpal Yadav as the milkman 'Forecast' areper functorily effective. Arif Zakaria as Som's Principal is acaricature and Mahesh Thakur as Oshin's father is wastedin an insignificant role. The plot is hackneyed, laden with simple, yet carelessoversights that make the messages of the film seem forcedand shallow. The exposition is verbose and the dialoguesare cliched, worn-out and unexciting. On the technical front, with moderate production values, the film manages toexude a fairly appealing look. The background score in afew scenes creates an impact, barring which, the musicand songs are average. Overall, the film is poorly presentedand uninspiring.
