Preface
This brochure contains the descriptions of 50 videos selected for presenta-tion at the SIBGRAPI’98 Video Festival, which took place in October 20-23,1998, in Rio de Janeiro.
SIBGRAPI is the most prestigious Brazilian series of meetings in ComputerGraphics and related areas, and it is being realized since 1987. In 1998,SIBGRAPI entered on its first international version. The SIBGRAPI VideoFestival is traditionally presented during the Symposium. Its purpose is toshow visual explanations of computer graphics techniques, algorithm ani-mations and software demonstrations, as well as computer generated filmsand cartoons produced by TV companies.
This year the Video Committee received 61 submissions for the Festival, from the main Brazilian production houses and also from other countries.Due to the great number of high-quality submitted videos and also to timeconstraints, the Video Committee decided to organize two events to pre-sent the 50 accepted videos: main and secondary presentations. The mainevent, which occurred in one special session at night, exhibited 30 videos. The secondary presentations were realized during the four days of theSymposium, and exhibited 20 videos. The contents of this brochure arealso available at the website of the Video Committee (http://www.visgraf.impa.br/video98). A videotape of the Festival was also pro-duced, and included all accepted videos.
The Video Committee would like to thank the authors of all submittedvideos, who believed and contributed to improve the quality of the Festival;the members of the Program and Organizing Committees, for their timeand comprehension; the sponsors and supporters of the Festival (3DGraphics, Officer, IMPA, VISGRAF, LSI, Tecgraf, Altromondo), for thefinancial and structural support; the animation team at LSI/USP, for theopening animation of the Festival; Mônica Costa, for the excellent anduseful guidelines prepared for the 97 edition of the Festival; and JonasGomes, Luiz Velho, Paulo Cezar, Luiz H. de Figueiredo, Luiz Nery, MarcosRayol, Ruben Zonenschein and Margareth Prevot, for their valuable com-ments and help.

Authors: Konrad Polthier

Affiliation: Technische Universitaet Berlin.(Germany)
Description of Content: The video "Geodesics and Waves" introducestopics of recent work on numerical methods on arbitrary surfaces, theirdiscretization and visualization. Geodesic curves are a fundamentalconcept in mathematics to generalize the idea of a "straight line" tocurves on arbitrary surfaces and in general manifolds. This makes thema suitable tool also for numerical methods. The video gives a glimpse oftheir properties and uses them as an application in the study of pointwaves. The particles of the wave front move along geodesic curves aslong as no branch point appears. The singularities of the wave are inclose connection with the singularities of the differential of the exponen-tial map in differential geometry and are studied in detail. Discreteversions of geodesics are introduced on piecewise linear surfaces andthey show similar phenomena as their smooth counterparts. The visual-ization of waves on arbitrary surfaces uses a special texture mappingtechnique. Different segments of a wave overlap and the occurringinterference requires different texel layers for each point on the surface. Here the number of layers varies over the surface.

Description of Content: In a parametric world, little opportunities areavailable for texturing implicit objects. This animation presents theadventure of a soft (blobby) object to "dress" a 2D texture. Using atechnique developed by the authors, our hero solves his problemcreating a particle system associated to the gradient vector field of hisimplicit function. humanoid character are designed and exclusively drawn by hand andthe refinement and coloring are accomplished using Adobe Photoshop. The textures of trees, leaves, clump of flowers, foot path, lamp-postsand paling fence are scanned in from photographs taken by the authors.Fine details are carefully painted onto these scanned textures usingAdobe Photoshop. The serpentine locomotion for the snake chasing thehumanoid character and the sidewinding progression before hitting theloin of the humanoid character are generated using our phisically-basedsnake animation system. To produce the sequence, we have to specifythe desired type of snake progression and define the targeted path ofsnake using control points. the basic reference flight sequence of thehumanoid character is generated based on aerodynamics.

Description of Content: This video demonstrates the results of a paperwith the same name presented in the Computer Animation 98 confer-ence. It shows a technique to control the movement of an agent in thepresence of multiple obstacles and targets using three different non-linear dynamical systems. One dynamical system controls the headingangle of the agent while another controls the forward speed. The lastone selects which objects in the environment should be taken inaccount. An important noise term is introduced to avoid unstable fixedpoints. This technique works in real time and support both movingobjects and limited knowledge of the environment.
