With HD video now firmly adopted as the video content norm, a new wave of video tech is taking the world by storm. You may have heard the hype surrounding 4K, Ultra-HD and Apple’s Retina displays - all screen technologies which are quickly gaining traction with consumers as a superior replacement for regular HD video content.

Online TV streaming giant Netflix has been testing ultra high definition content in the UK. The service requires an average internet speed of at least 16 mbps in order to sustain video quality however, much higher speeds are recommended for smooth playback.

Where is the UHD content?

Despite many UK broadband providers offering high speed connections, this service is still unavailable in the vast majority of places - especially outside of large cities. With multiple sources offering conflicting data on the UK’s average broadband speed, the only conclusion which can be drawn is that many fall below the speed required to handle Ultra-HD.
